    The Dead Covers Project

What a wonderful month it's been, sharing our love of the Grateful Dead through song and video! We applaud all the hard work and effort that you, the fans, put into the DEAD COVERS PROJECT, and we hope you'll continue to watch and support all the amazing participant videos on YouTube until we fire up the DEAD COVERS PROJECT again next February.

Throughout the month of April, we'll be shining our lovelight on a handful of artists that really made the grade. You'll get to know each of these five artists and find out just what made them connect with the Dead in our exclusive DEAD COVERS PROJECT profiles, but for now we'd simply like to congratulate the following participants (in no particular order)...

    Now Playing In The Band...

My versions of Let It Grow and Saint of Circumstance...
Hi All - glad to see the DCP lives on!!! Here are a couple of vids I recorded (inspired to put these up after last night - Mickey Hart was sitting in my row at the Zakir Hussain concert in Berkeley and I got to say hello to my #1 hero! And: I also got to see Billy & 7 Walkers perform the night before that!):

These vids are different from my Looks Like Rain vid that was featured on this page in February (thanks again to the DCP folks for that unbelievable opportunity!). Less polished and the improv on piano is zanier (especially the last half of Let It Grow) - I modeled these covers after my favorite live recordings from the early 80's soon after Brent came on board (~7 years before my first Dead shows) - I tried to sound like a coked-up freight train that's perpetually on the verge of derailment.... Having a blast browsing all these DCP vids! Any feedback / input on my stuff is greatly appreciated! -Live Long and Prosper, Satish

    ziph's picks - otherones90210 doing "brown-eyed women"
wow, Just came by to drop off another deserving entry and discover that the thread weavers have indeed been busy with comments, leads, suggestions, and even strokes from BroknArrow, leafcuttermultimedia, PAPPYPGH, new potato 15, and Harp-Unstrung; all of which I shall have to return for, digest, and undoubtably opine about but, not to be distracted just yet I am becoming increasingly amazed at the sheer volume of completely original approaches to the project and this entry is no exception. It is a clever, funny, thought provoking video with another hardcore mega talented musician/singer at its core (all I know is his YouTube name, otherones90210: well done! I'll be back ziph

I know they already appear above, that's how I found them, but after viewing the video I'm compelled to encourage everyone: DON'T PASS THIS ONE UP beautiful video, awesome voice, the exact right tune to use a sampled vocal chorus on good job tulips! ziphler's department of redundancy department

Sometimes going thru these videos you hit one that makes you forget to look at the video in context and you become part of the music. It stands up on its own right. The quintiscensial dead band is gonna do what the dead did, not just what they played. If there isn't a jam that takes you somewhere (unexpected) then there wasn't jerry, so they're going to have to jam and these guys can. Every tune they've submitted (that I 've seen anyway) passes that "I forget I was here to evaluate them" rule, and this southpaw on lead rocks. they are an elephant in this deadcoversproject room so I'm keepin an eye on the beast as long as it's putting out ziph

....probably the coolest moment in my musical career!!!We come out of China Cat Sunflower into my original song, "Never Alone" (we throw a little China > Rider jam in the middle of Never Alone, as well) and the great Steve Kimock just takes off... He never heard the song before this performance.

I know the thing is over, but I do look everyday to check out new videos in the "Top 10" and have been enjoying a bunch of them! I tune in this morning to find a slew of our stuff from our recent show with the great STEVE KIMOCK! A word to the wise, the sound quality is filled with audience chatter, but you can still hear everything. We will be putting out the Soundboard audio onto Archive.org REALLY soon! I'll post the link once it's up for those interested. Peace!

Just got back from Ashland Oregon where I got to play with Front Porch Revival at Green Springs Inn. One of the guests happened to be an old bluesman by the name of Robert Fraiser who played the harp and trumpet. These guys tore it up with amazing educational banter on the history o da blues between tunes - then four days buried in my day job and I'm back - oh and not a moment too soon I see cause ol' PAPPYPGH's a runnin the board. The really momentous development however is that the deadline ceiling has been crashed and talent is once again rearing its head. That's our call to arms all you clever and hungary souls, the flood gates are open and the deadcoversproject is once again open for business - and this time no stinkin watches! So get busy!! Ziph must be entertained!! Ha Ha but 1st I must sleep. I will return with more treasures currently hidden deep within the deadcoversproject For now however, it just took a minutre to find this this priceless entry: ziph

don't be sorry PAPPYPGH, rejoice. This whole business (and these days the whole world) is about hook or crook. I never paid much attention to Kimock but you guys put on a good show and Kimock has an interesting and unique way of whipping up the jams; he really sneaks up on you and I love your pair of of queens on vocals. They've been cycling the top ten board for a few weeks now. The video I submitted for Front Porch Revival cycled all the way to number 1 in just a few days then fell off the top. The boys got all excited. Thanks deadcoversproject or its mysterious leader! Giving everyone some exposure is the kind approach - think about dropping the likes bit though - I see you're tracking all the outgoing clicks now anyway and are clearly not paying any attention to like counts anyway, thank Jerry, so why continue the ruse? I just checked out mightrinwood's entry from url provided in the post right below this one and was seriously touched so I figured I'd help him out by embedding the video here to get him a little more traffic from those who only click - it's short and sweet and if I'm understanding correctly qualifies cause was written by Hunter

I wonder when they are going to "shine" that Lovelight on the top 5 submissions. First they said it was going to be in March, now it was changed to April and now its almost the end of April and...nothing.

Maybe it's time to start highlighting some of the bands and renditions that didn't get as much attention. So many submissions, and yet it seems the same bands keep getting reposted. What about some of the less popular/lesser "known" bands that offered some interesting takes on Dead tunes? Do they not get their day in the sun now that the official contest is over? I mean, since you're still posting vids, it would be nice to see a more diverse offering. Sure, we could search ourselves, but it's nice to see them up here where they are "highlighted." Some of those small bands could probably use the exposure and appreciation.

Ha Ha, - surprising annieroses waybackin WOW it's a june explosion. I haven't even been able to get off the ten list tonight the RED PLANET trio pretty amazing sounding acoustics 60 years ago the foundling bluegrass was eclipsed by the electric guitar - of a sudden there is finally presence parody in sound reinforcement and bluegrass has grown up e.g. check out the infamous string dusters these guys are jumping into mainstream America with all the sensibilities of the dead and then some, they bring the technology, drip with talent, and exude nothing but love, I'm glad I lived to see it

Many deadcoversproject entries have scored 1000's of hits by virtue of having been posted on YouTube for years before the start of the project. Others like posts from Kimock7 and TheBadAssets have paid for slots at the top of YouTube searches. This entry has earned all its 2307 hits since the inception of the project and I can certainly see why. Rosemary Stephanie Lallouz Everyone, let me know of others with lots of plain, old-fashioned honest hits since December 2011. gotta post the other Red Planet Trio entry: A common holdback of musicians is attempts to play with people of their own caliber or less when from a selfish point of view one should strive to surround oneself with players that are just plain better. I get the sense that these two guitar players have both always done just that. not that they're selfish ha ha. OK, I'll shut up. ziphler

Peter Bach - Black Throated Wind great voice There's been a bunch of these one man multitrack productions and I gotta say they tend to be a bit one dimensional but the vocal duet in Matt Raum's Jack Straw stands out. The singers are Travis Stinson and Annie Neeley , lead player is Grant Gordy
