to whoever reads this, please reply. it seems to me that all the shows i had gone to are celebrations of living. today when i have an anniversary of a date of a show; ka-boom! i love them all that much more. today is 7-20-09 and the first 7-20 since my dear mom helen passed in january. she went with me to deer creek today and i am certain she is getting applause from jerry right now. she is probably hitting him for playing "peggy-o." what would your mama think ... i celebrate all my anniversaries of the dates of the shows that i enjoy even today! peace, shack

but I also think there are those among us who are so innocent that they believe this place is a straight shot to the decision-makers, and it just ain't that way. So my concern is with managing expectations and the inevitable sense of exuberant entitlement that seems to come with the territory of expressing one's views online. The undercurrent of being OWED full shows in pristine release that bursts forth every time a Road Trips is announced is downright weird to me. I cannot say whether the views expressed will wind up having any influence at all; all I can do is tell TPTB the topic exists. Which, in a minute or two, it will.

one would be hard pressed, if not actually delusional, to define the Grateful Dead as a democracy, at least if one included the Deadheads. But sometimes the whole show...
... is NOT in the vault. As I remember it, the guy who did most of the taping was Kidd Candelario, a long -time roadie with the band. If he had other, more important issues, for example helping Billy with a loose drum mount, or something else to do, then the taping took a back seat. Not sure when the band made taping the WHOLE show a priority, but I think it was sometime in the late 80's or the early 90's. That's the way it's been in town...

    Whole shows vs compilations referendum
Marye: How about a forum on this. Once again the debate is raging about whole shows vs compilations. In the latest Rhino era (since this revamped site was launched). I make the score so far this Total 9 Whole shows: RT2.2 (2/14/68); 3 From the Vault (2/19/71); Winterland Box Set (11/9/73/11/10/73;11/11/73); Cow Palace (12/31/76); To Terrapin (5/28/77); Road Trips Whole Show Download (11/5/79); Road Trips Whole Show Download (11/6/79) Total 7 Compilations: RT1.1 (Fall’79); RT1.2 (Oct 77); RT1.3 (Summer 71); RT1.4 (Oct 78); RT2.1 (Sept 90); RT2.3 (June 74); Rockin’ the Cradle (Sept 78) So its a more or less even balance now, with whole shows slightly favoured (mainly because of the 73 set) So how about a referendum on future policy. Please post your preference from the following list A. Whole shows only B. Mostly whole shows with a few compilations C. About even balance of compilations and whole shows D. Mostly compilations with a few whole shows E. Compilations only If we post our choices A,B,C,D or E in the subject box, then it will be easy to monitor the results. Then we can rant as much as we like in the comment box.

And yes, topic creation is turned off for the moment at least because we're trying to get things working properly on a relatively finite number of topics. If there's one you want started (like, say, TC and Donna Jean), send a message to izzie or me and we'll get on it. Thanks.

how about a Grateful Life section? by this, I mean stuff which is connected to the grateful philosophy of life, all things grateful, and experiences we have had which may not have been at shows or totally band/music related. another, meeting heads in odd places, or experiences with heads in places other than shows/on tour. that could be called 'Strangers Stopping Strangers' like when I met a middle aged Indian gentleman in the gardens of the Taj Mahal and he went off on a tirade about why did the dead play in Egypt but never in India... another, 'Parking Lot' pretty much anything goes there. finally, a 'Soapbox' where peole could feel free to rant (in a nice way) about just about anything... food for thought. peace. after I wrote this and shut off the 'puter before, it hit me, why not make these topics into Sections, and then allow topic creation in these new areas? 'you can please all of the people all of the time' or create one new section with these headings (and any others people want) and allow topic creation? it would seem like a common sense solution. if it is a software issue, that it is either all or none, OK. but if the software of the board would allow topic creation in one or two sub-headings, why not?? no hurry, just chewing the fat here. (Naturally, I mean after you get all of the bugs out of the system and all that other stuff that you folks have to deal with) kind of like a compromise between festival seating and requiring people to sit in their assigned seats. people can move anywhere they want to on the floor, but if you are in the mezzanine, you should sit in your reserved seat. didn't Hampton do that in 87 or 88? just an idea. Compromise is one of the 'C's in C C Joe peace. Cheerfully Compromising Joe "The highway is for gamblers, you'd better use your sense Take what you have gathered from coincidence"

How about a topic for all of our dearly departed friends? I don't know about you all, but I know way too many Heads who are dead... There were some very special people that many of us in the community knew who died on the bus. This seems like a great place to honor our memories of them.

Its the achilles heel of this forum. Look at the URLs. It looks like if people were allowed to create new posts, and a duplicate topic is posted, it would mess things up because posts aren't arranged with numbers. I certainly hope things will change but I don't see how without ripping this thing down and adding a whole new forum. Can a MOD comment on this? _______________ insert obligatory signature here

For the moment, it's primarily a chaos-management issue because a lot of things still aren't working quite right. But as mindbender points out, there are also meta-issues about the way the software handles things, and it's not exactly what we're used to either. We're kinda bumping down this road together, to say nothing of up the learning curve. And we're also trying to figure out how things might be structured a bit more intuitively and making incremental experiments with what tools we've got. I'm not kidding, the sections we have are the result of brainstorming last week about uh, what categories do we really need within the parameters of keeping it fairly simple during the shakedown? Not unlike a certain band, we're kinda figuring this out as we go along. So be patient with us, and keep the thoughts coming. Apropos of which, CC, we're trying to figure out some underlying structure issues, but at least a couple of them should be up today. And Lazy, yours is a little easier to implement, so I'll be back in a few with the link.

Hey! What about a "This Day in GD History" Topic? On the "old" board, I posted links (about everyday) to places where you could listen to shows (streaming and on the legal!). I'd love to do one on a daily basis where I'd put up a link to and about a GD show played that day in history. I just love posting links to music, especially the GD!!! I'm just a, well...porpoise.

It would be nice if there was a location (folder, discussion) JUST for casual conversation. Maybe that could be the area where subscribers are able to post new topics. But first I think "we" need to clarify whether all discussions are designed to last forever, or if some discussions will "roll over" if volume is too high (for instance, a 10,000 message limit, after which the discussion archives and begins again with a new message #1) Or perhaps a time factor - if a discussion has NO messages in a given time (30 days, 3 months, a year) it archives, or disappears completely. I know that people really want to be able to post new topics, but it shouldn't result in what we called "ensuction" over in DNC - when the site became so unwieldy partly because of the huge volume of messages, and huge chunks of the site just started disappearing.

Folks, really. I don't make this stuff up. There is nothing in the current software that will allow us to create some areas with open topic-creation, and some areas with moderated topic creation. There is no function within the software that will set limits, like X number of topics per day/week/lifetime. And there isn't an automatic roll-over or nukage function. MaryE and I will keep talking about it with the rest of the admin team.

My sugguestion is you need more threads per forum. For instance, in the "I'm Looking For..." forum, if you are not going to allow people to start threads, then at least start a few yourself.. one for "Looking for old Tour Friends, another for looking for a show, looking for misc.. ect. Thank you :) "The bus came by and I got on, that's when it all began.."

And be grateful for MaryE's discretion, else there would have been a topic called simply, Pee Songs.

...shall we go, you and I while we can... So I read all these really critical posts about no forum topics in the new site. It reminded me that there are essentially two kinds of "Deadheads". First, you got your folks who'll wait in line for three days to get a ticket or get into a general admission venue. Then, you got your folks who crash the gates or elbow thier way to the front of the crowd during the show. The difference is PATIENCE and TOLERANCE! Leave if you want to, but here's a thought...try letting these folks work out some of these issues before you bail...it might be worth your while!

I've been opening up the charity topics when the charities themselves have requested it (most of them also have links on the Family pages), and I would be more than delighted to start topics for these folks as well, if they wanted it. My concern is opening one up that the actual folks never visit, so I wait for them to ask. I'd also be happy to pursue it with them if you've got a contact at Seva I should talk to. Or, for that matter, Furthur, Planet Drum, etc. I do know a guy at Unborken Chain and I'm talking to him. Thanks!

being in this environment for 20 plus years i think you need to have an "in dedication" page. we have many sick extended brothers and sisters of this community that need prayers and positive support headed their way. the output of positive energy is tremendous within this community - every bit helps. we've all been witness to it in some form. perhaps some others have already asked for this. i make a motion to start it. the reason is i have a dear friend of mine for several years now - she's 41, and has been on life-support since last wednesday. nobody knows why. the doctors can't do tests because she keeps going into seizures when they stabilize her body. i ask this community to pray for her. take care - chris

What happened to the politics discussion thread? And Dicks Picks/Vault Releases, for that matter? Also, is Live/Dead now out of print? I didn't see it in the store.

The short answer is that all the stuff from old dead.net forums is gone. We are trying to get it restored as a read-only archive. If you want to talk about politics, start here: http://www.dead.net/forum/i-turn-channel-six-president-comes-news Releases We'd Like to See http://www.dead.net/forum/top-my-request-list If you want to talk about existing Vault releases, no problem, we'll start a topic! As for Live/Dead being out of print, nope. The Store is very sparsely stocked at the moment and all kinds of stuff isn't there yet. And, while I'm thinking of it, as someone mentioned elsewhere, there are at present no downloads in the Store, but there are plenty at iTunes, if you can use that format.

Marye, I love the "favorite versions" thread, but I think a good topic would be "essential shows" or "favorite shows" or something along those lines. After all, the Grateful Dead were about the long journey through the nebulous of the entire show, not just one song. The reason I suggest this, is that, even though I've been a Deadhead for almost 20 years, I am only really familiar with historic shows, DP's, and '89-through '95. There are so many knowledgeable heads here who could point the younger heads and newbies toward, say, that killer show from '79 or 81 etc. (Ha ha! isn't weird that after all these years, I still feel like a "touch-head" newbie!?). Perhaps a logical way to break it down would be along decades or eras (the Pigpen era, the Kieth era, the Brent era, etc.) Anyway, thanks for the awesome new site. You guys are truly doing yeoman's work! Yo Soy Boricua!
