    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

Benefit of the doubt for Rhino...
Hal-I understand your sentiment, and as one of the disgruntled posters, i feel the need to respond. The main issue I posted about was the absolute rudeness I experienced by customer service when calling about defective discs in a set I paid $450 for. Yes, people make mistakes. i can live with that. To me, it's all in how a person handles the mistakes once they are brought to awareness. There is no excuse for the way the customer service person treated me, and I make no apologies for my post.

Just to let you know, kirkmc, simonrob and others: I received the box this morning in the south of the Netherlands and it's indeed beautiful. No damage (except for a slight dent in # 10 (Hamburg)). Checking out and turning the music loud!

They told me the same thing a dozen times now .. no problem, it's all straightened out, then the a week later I call them and they say "What's your shipping address again"? This back and forth has been going on for a couple of weeks now. Does anyone, anyone, know how to do their job???? Seriously... "I won't take your life won't even take a limb just unload my shotgun and take a little skin"

Or so the blurb says... And my count, now that it's all ripped, is that with 578 "songs" we have a total of 70 hours, 53 minutes, 39 seconds running time. So. I'm off on my three-day weekend! (Kidding -- that's no way to digest this behemoth, of course. But I am gonna binge on it...)

Mine arrived today also. I live near Rotterdam so that would seem to make the score Holland 2-0 Rest of Europe. I guess it could take a day or so longer to get to France and other Euro-destinations if they did indeed all ship together via Amsterdam. When it came to shipping options, I opted for USPS, but it was in fact delivered by UPS (to my neighbour as I was at work - but he didn't know what it was luckily!). Looks beautiful but I have not investigated it in depth yet.

Make that 3-0. Somebody in the eastern part of the Netherlands tracked me down and informed me that he had his box delivered this morning as well (personalized, no less!).

I received an email September 8, warning me that it had shipped September 7. I assume now they meant it shipped from Amsterdam at that date, or they did some serious speed shipping as it arrived at 10 o'clock, September 9... Hang in there!

You'd think the band would have stretched out a few of those jams just a bit further so we could have gotten an "even" 72 hours of music. I mean, really, what were they thinking?

Got an email yesterday and they wrote that they shipped my order. A question to you deadheads outthere, to be 100% sure that I ordered the the right stuff, does Europe '72: The Complete Recordings indicate that this the box with books, maps and so on?

Ordinarily wahlgrenwilson, you would be expecting the E72 box, however, based on my experience and what I have read here recently, you will most likely end up with Rhino's splendid Ray Charles set from a few years back, and a Skeletons from the Closet CD (in the deleted long box, yes!!). Today I got another email from customer service, saying to call them to straighten all this out, I guess just like I did on Aug 20 and Aug 31.

Yesterday 9-8-11 My Account Was Finally Charged. I Guess This Finishes My Odessey From January 2011 To Now Of The Ever Famous Europe '72 Box Set. I Can't Wait For Another Half-Assed Project Like This. Yeah-It's ALL About The Music...

Contacted dead.net customer service yesterday for an update, and received an email today saying it had shipped, with a tracking link (which didn't work). Anyhow, I've just received an official email a few minutes ago, saying it had shipped today, and to allow 12 days for delivery.

Well, here in the U.K. I've just received an e-mail from fulfillment stating that my order has just been shipped with a hang time of 12 days. No charge on my current account as yet either. Maybe looking at a delivery date of Monday/Tuesday given the way the first few European deliveries have taken shape. I'll say an upfront thanks to all involved in this monumental project and I look forward to many more (hopefully). Will report back when the case arrives. Ian.

So i got the shipping notice yesterday - I'm in France, for those who haven't seen the previous episodes. Since it didn't make sense - it said the package was shipped via USPS International, whereas a previous e-mail said it would be sent to Amsterdam then sent by a courier - I e-mail customer service asking about it. They replied with an e-mail with a link and a real tracking number for GLS Parcel (never heard of them). In any case, it shows that my box was shipped yesterday from Amsterdam, then got to France this afternoon. Looks like I'll be getting it tomorrow or Monday. All that to say that the last few people who posted about getting the 12-day notice should expect their packages in the next couple of days. What a seriously long strange adventure this has been!

I was amazed reading that Blair just got his box set delievered!! He says so in an off topic comment in his latest Golden Road blog chapter. One report and quote from an issue of The Golden Road fanzine comes to mind. It was Garcia who was told at a someone elses concert in the Bay Area, to put out his fag. Then one person was quoted to have said that he thought Garcia had some sort of license to smoke fags in public, being who he was. I was likewise surprised to find out Blair didn't recieve his box set before anybody else. I thought he had a "license" to be about the first people in line. ;-) Micke

On September 7th, 2011 kevjones said: I love reading the posts whenever a new release comes out. Deadheads are really funny these days. I see a lovely combination of frantic--"where is mine"--posts, to complaints about one missing Casey Jones (they must have played it a 3/4 of the Europe shows), to the obligatory--"I can't believe I didn't get a number". I for one am a little bummed out that I cancelled my personalized copy, but I was pretty relieved when I found a seller selling the individual shows for a fair price on eBay a few days ago. The 2 shows that I really wanted (5/11 and 5/26) I was able to purchase for $30.00 a piece (plus $3.00 combined shipping on all three discs), and I also purchased 5/24, for $30.00 based on the recommendation from the David Lemieux interview. I have been having my own little Europe 72 party with all of the previous releases. I also intend to nab Europe 72 volume 2, and that is more than enough to tide me over. Just enjoy the music ================================== You're welcome ;) I tried to put the shows up at a reasonable but not "gougey" price. I did make pretty good money off them, but I was taking an awful risk breaking it up. I had read so many people on these threads wondering if the individual shows were gonna be released that I had a moment of inspiration. I had 2 boxsets and decided to give it a shot at breaking one up. I guess I figured that there had to be a lot of people out there who couldn't afford the whole but would be interested in the parts. Guess I was right. I actually received a few emails from eBay buyers thanking me for offering the shows individually. And of course an email or two expressing horror. After I patiently explained that not everyone can afford $450 but could afford $35-$70 for a couple of shows - or in your case a couple more ;) - it diffused the "you're not a real deadhead" crap. Enjoy your shows! I have no doubt that they will easily maintain their value. I'm going to put the trunk up very soon and let the market determine the value. I can imagine someone who buys the music only edition for $450 having the ability to suddenly have a complete boxset with personalization at a reasonable price. Of course, I'll have to wade through a few nasty emails again... ================================== When all else fails, success is all that's left.

Sorry to bust your balls, gr8, but with all the people who haven't gotten theirs yet, all those who can't afford them, and all the issues facing the world, does the shuffled timeline of notices really supplant that it's all about the music.....with that beautiful box of 73 discs of some of the finest music the GD ever recorded sitting right in front of you? But, hey, as long as we're laughing, something's still right with the world..... Maybe you were jibing in jestful hyperbole, anyway...... Receiving the box without notice felt like magic to me ~ and I still believe it was. I love that the shipping notice was delayed, it made for such a wonderful surprise. Even if someone or some computer screwed up, I'm going with the idea there was larger Hypnocracy at work.....

Hi everyone. I have sent a few e-mails to customer service (no reply) and have tried to call 5-6 times but the line is always busy, no matter how long I hold, and when I try to leave a message the phone cuts out every time. They have not taken the money from my account and I have not received an e-mail in many months. Anyone got any news on this? I am in Australia.

They used to have a "Complete DP" option for awhile, buy all the releases at once, I think the price was like $695. Anybody remember if that's right? My count is 112 discs total for the 36 DP. I hope they do get reissued along with several of the other GD releases. "Rare Cuts and Oddities" for one. Got an email about a credit card issue (that was never defined for me) on 8/29, talked to dude about it on 8/30, pre-auth charge showed up on 9/6 (a bit more than the "within 72 hours" dude had mentioned) and the charge disappeared today. So that means...hell, I don't know what it means LOL. Supposed to be a personalized edition but at this point I'm not confident about what I'll get. I'd better hush before my negativity gets another thread nerfed. The "Holy Sh*t" thread disappeared today, all 280ish pages of it LMAO. Cheers!

Antonjo I hear you loud and clear. 1st let's do the math. 3600 box sets promised by the end of Sept. which is 1/3 over. I've seen maybe a couple of dozen complainers about what are in reality minor things (my e-mail came after I got it, it's not here and it's 5 days into the month). That is less than 1%. Not to shabby. And and truely the most important thing a few people need to get their priorities strait. The US has an effective un(der)employment rate of 16%, people are losing their homes. Europe there are numerous countries on the verge of bankrupcy. Because there has been a small amout of confusion about a CD set pales to insignifigence. Now if as someone wants to accuse me (as has already happened) from pontifiating on high so be it. Finally one more time I thank the people at Rhino ( and the Dead) for a great job with a fantastic product. I have done business with you for decades (The Fugs Electric Steamboat, The Rascals box, The double disc Butterfield Live even The Monkees). For a collector you have been and will continue as source of great enjoyment. P.S. I'm waiting for the rest of the vinyl the box was great. Oh yeah you gotta call someone an MF go to the Zappa site it's populated by children

A happy update to my post a few days back telling how my box set was woefully delivered to the wrong address (a US address instead of my current European one), despite my having updated the address with "always complying" customer service several weeks back. Using technology seemingly unknown (or, simply, ignored) by Rhino, UPS, and USPS, my friend Earthman got me the first Wembley show in a matter of seconds, with others to follow. What is so pleasurable about listening to the show is seeing my daughter dance to China Cat Sunflower, as I've seen her do many times before. :-) :-) :-)

Has exploded!!! I was working my way into show 5 and made the mistake of looking back up the list in itunes and there was Europe 72-04-11 Townhall, New Castle - Show3, Disc3. Starting with Truckin' going into Drums and into The Other One. Thought, "I need to hear that again." I am. At this rate I'll never make it to show 12 let alone 22. Oh well, as someone said earlier on, "all good things in their time." As a great man once said, "chuba, chuba", .......and that's hard to argue with

After a bit of reflection, I was quite happy to only get the All Music edition. Sure, the book would be nice, but where was I going to put a big box in my New York apartment? Then last night I got an email from Dead.net saying I was being upgraded to the box! No regrets now! They say they'll charge the card next week, so I should get it soon... or even last week

I just read the post about the DP full sets. Yes, I do remember when they were offering it, the price sounds right too. I'm glad that some folks are getting a box instead of the All Music Version, what a nice surprise. I'm really digging mine, the music is really awesome. In 2009, I pre-ordered The Allman Brother's Beacon Box, it was $ 535.00, just 14 shows I think, it was worth it, all the shows were remastered. So, I'm really feeling like I got a great deal on this box. I saw where the Grateful Dead Movie is coming out in Blu-Ray, that will be suh-weet, more to follow I'm sure. I'm a Neil Young fan too, the Archives Vol.1 Blu-Ray sound is really amazing, I can only imagine what some acoustic Dead would sound like in that format. Coconut Phil, living Free.

Neil keeps upgrading/releasing etc in so many formats it's hard to keep up. Dylan does it too LOL. I'll probably wait until the Ultimate Compleat Neil and MegaDylan sets are released in a thimble sized memory cube that fits directly into a brain-mounted cyber socket sometime after 2020. Then I'll have to get a brain upgrade, I'm sure, since this one will be worn out. It is cool that some people are getting upgraded (I wonder about the record keeping of who'd be next in line for a box though). I also feel sorry for the people who apparently weren't able to complete the deal for their box set, if that's what these newly available sets are.

I know I had placed my order for the All Music Edition within a few days after the boxes were sold out, so the proximity does seem reasonable in my case. Also, I've seen a few postings on other forums by people who were being shipped more box sets than they intended to order (remember the confusion over the validity of some of the early orders). There's a hilarious thread on archive.org about the Europe '72 Distribution Center, for example! Hopefully this kind of thing accounts for most of the extra sets available, and everything is Kosher. Of course I haven't actually received it yet, so...

Dylan doesn't "upgrade" any of his stuff. He releases new "Bootleg Series" recordings, but that's about it. There was one exception with a very overpriced limited edition of one of the Bootleg Series releases, which came with an additional CD. My one regret is that he doesn't release many live recordings, but his catalog is pretty stable. (I have all his recordings, bought from iTunes in the "Complete Dylan" set, then all subsequent releases.)

They reissued a bunch of the early Dylan albums in SACD several years ago, and they're releasing 'em in new fancy vinyl now. Also "The Original Mono Recordings" set of the first eight albums. I've got 'em all too, just not the SACD and Mono releases ;) . He sneaks out a live release every once in awhile, and I expect he'll continue to do so. Loves me some Live at the Gaslight, at Carnegie Hall and at Brandeis

Yes, but they're not new versions with bonus tracks or anything at least. He's always released the "bonus" stuff on the bootleg series.

I've heard good things about Neil Y's Archive Blu Rays too. I'm waiting for Vol 2 though. David Glasser said the Dead are keeping hold of 24 bit masters of the Europe 72 shows too, just in case. I would have gone for that if they'd been offered first time around, but I can't justify buying the whole tour twice! All you lucky Heads who already have the box seem pretty happy with the sound anyway.

"All you lucky Heads who already have the box seem pretty happy with the sound anyway." All except for me and one other guy who posted about the sound. I'm still feeling a little burned by it. I blame the analog-to-digital transfer, because Norman and Glasser are known quantities. I would love to know what went wrong and whether those two engineers were frustrated by it, or if they just accepted it. If you don't know what I'm talking about, try playing the previously-released mixes of songs from 4/7 and 4/8 against this new release. It's night and day to me.

One Man, your comment about the sound intrigued me. So I compared the sound on "Steppin' Out" to the Box Set Wembley recordings. Listening on a pair of Audio Technica studio monitor headphones, both recordings sound excellent. It's very tough for me to discern if one mix is superior over another. I will say that comparing the bonus tracks from Europe '72 of Good Lovin- Caution from Tivoli on the Beyond Description Box Set, the Box Set seems a touch superior mix to me. It's just my opinion, everyone's ears are different.

If this wasn't clear, what I tried to say was I think the Good Lovin-Caution from Tivoli sounds superior on the newly released Europe '72 Box than from the Beyond Description Box Set. Sorry if that was unclear. There's a little ditty in the hardcover book how the Truckin>Sing Me Back Home is dynamite. And WOW, are they right about that!!!

For those who got the music only version. You aren't missing anything. There is virtually nothing in the box, and it is awkward to handle. Since someone at Rhino decided not to include all the swag that they had originally suggested, I wish they would have scraped the box idea, started over, and redesigned it to be smaller and more user friendly. I would have preferred a box that is more utilitarian and with less dead space inside. A simple box with just room enough to stand the CDs upright and side-by-side would have been preferable, with the book redesigned to fit the new shape of the Box. It may be buyer's remorse, but I am considering selling mine after I rip it to my HD. I just can't justify having that much money tied up in a do-dad. ". . . like the do-dah man.
