Grateful Dead Original Members To Perform Together Again One Last Time

Grateful Dead Original Members Reunite to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

“Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead" at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2015

Marks the Grateful Dead Members' Final Performance Together

    Event information available at Dead50.net

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Grateful Dead, the four original members — Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir — will reunite at Chicago's Soldier Field, nearly 20 years to the day of the last Grateful Dead concert, which took place at the same venue. “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead" will occur over three nights on July 3, 4, and 5, 2015, marking the original members' last-ever performance together. The band will be joined by Trey Anastasio (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards), and Bruce Hornsby (piano). The group will perform two sets of music each night.

Jerry Garcia's daughter Trixie Garcia announced the shows in an exclusive interview. You can check out her announcement here.

Joining the original members of Grateful Dead are three musicians who have embodied the band’s spirit of musical innovation throughout their eclectic careers. Guitarist Trey Anastasio is best known for his work as the principal songwriter and lead guitarist for touring juggernaut Phish, but he has also found time to score and arrange music for orchestras and Broadway productions such as “Best Musical” TONY nominee ‘Hands on a Hardbody.’ Pianist Bruce Hornsby had already won the first of his three Grammy Awards when he first guested with Grateful Dead in 1988. Following the death of the band’s keyboard player Brent Mydland in 1990, Hornsby toured with the group into 1992, and he has maintained a collaborative relationship with its members ever since. Bay Area native and jazz keyboardist Jeff Chimenti joined Bob Weir’s Rat Dog in 1997, and has since worked on projects such as Phil Lesh & Friends, The Other Ones, The Dead, and Furthur.

In the tradition of the original Grateful Dead Ticketing Mail Order, tickets will first be made available via a first-come, first-served mail order system. All additional ticketing information is available at Dead50.net.

Randoom News and maybe true- maybe not ???
The picture is starting to get a bit clearer on the Grateful Dead's plans for the Summer ...and perhaps beyond. Fare Thee Well? One More Saturday Night! Word now is that in response to the unprecedented demand for the Dead's "Fare Thee Well" shows in Chicago, the same lineup, featuring all four surviving members of the Dead plus frequent collaborator Bruce Hornsby and Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, will also appear in the Bay Area for two shows at Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium in late June, we believe the 27th and 28th. The Santa Clara shows will be the only additional shows to feature this lineup or at which all four of the surviving Dead members will play together (though we do expect at least two if not all four to appear as part of the Grateful Dead Tribute Night at San Francisco's AT&T Park on August 13th, where the band will join together to sing the National Anthem before the Giants game). As previously mentioned, however, there will be more "Grateful Dead" shows this year that feature some of the members playing together with different guest artists, all of them playing with separate bands, or both. Some of these shows will take place at iconic venues like New York's Madison Square Garden arena, Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and probably a San Francisco-area venue to be determined, in addition to, perhaps, the Hollywood Bowl. Weir Still Here First, we expect a series of shows, perhaps a tour, featuring a nearly-Dead ("Almost Grateful"?) lineup set to include three of the "core" four surviving members - singer-guitarist Bob Weir and dual drummers BIll Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. On guitar, these shows will feature special guest and Dead fan John Mayer, as well as Steve Kimock, a Bay Area native regarded as a specialist in Jerry Garcia's style, while Phish's Mike Gordon will stand in for still-kicking bass player Phil Lesh, and frequent Dead collaborator Jeff Chimenti, also part of the stadium band, will handle keyboard duties. We expect these shows to take place either in June, right before the Bay Area gigs, or perhaps in late Summer and early Fall, and to begin or end with a multi-night stand at Red Rocks (where Kreutzmann and Hart appear with third-generation jam band the Disco Biscuits next month). Members of this band may also join Weir at the Dear Jerry tribute concert at Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion in May, at which all four members will appear separately. We note both that that event will take just days before David Letterman's final appearance on air, and that Weir was a musical guest during Mayer's recent stint guest-hosting CBS' The Late Late Show. In the Spirit of Woodstock Second, a number of festivals will see Dead-themed shows featuring one or more band members. We believe that the nearly-Dead lineup, or one close to it (perhaps substituting Widespread Panic's David Schools for Phish's Gordon) may play the as-yet-unannounced Saturday night "Superjam" at this June's Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee before performing at the Live Earth event outside NYC a few days later. We also would not be surprised to see a different Dead band, featuring Weir, Kreutzmann and Hart along with fellow sixties and seventies San Francisco star Carlos Santana on guitar, perform at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park, the site of many sixties Grateful Dead concerts, on August 9th, the anniversary of Garcia's death (we will have more to say about that festival's lineup soon). That would occur just a week before Weir and Kreutzmann collaborate with several young jamband musicians at the annual Allman Brothers-themed Peach Music Festival in Pennsylvania, whose bill also includes Santana and several notable Dead collaborators including Hornsby and latter-day Allman brother Warren Haynes (as well as Gregg Allman himself), and where Weir will separately collaborate with New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band. We would not be surprised if additional such collaborations are announced for Connecticut's Dead-themed Gathering of the Vibes festival, at which Kreutzmann will perform on Garcia's birthday, August 1st, or the Phases of the Moon festival in Arkansas in October. Lockn' In While Bonnaroo and Outside Lands are the biggest-name festivals to feature potential Dead collaborations this year, the only festival that will host all four members of the band is the Lockn' Festival in central Virginia in mid-September. The four members will appear mostly separately, but we expect subsets of them to take part in at least two of the collaborations that are the festival's organizing principle. One will be an encore of the Weir-Kreutzmann collaboration set for the Peach. Another will likely involve an appearance by "Dead Feat," featuring Little Feat members Fred Tackett and Paul Barrere (the band itself appears separately) along with Kreutzmann and New Orleans guitar/vocalists and big Dead fans Anders Osborne and Billy Iuso. And we would not be surprised if a third pairs Santana with Hart and perhaps Lesh, already announced as leading his own band of unspecified "Friends," who we expect to include Haynes and Osborne on guitar. Volunteers In addition to the Dead and perhaps Santana, Lockn' will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of a third group of San Francisco scenesters, the Jefferson Airplane. Original members Jorma Kaukonen (who will take part in the Dear Jerry concert) and Jack Casady will participate in a special Jefferson Airplane set featuring many special guests led by Saturday Night Live musical director G.E. Smith and husband and wife duo Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams of the Levon Helm Band (and he of Bob Dylan's band, among others, as well). While Grace Slick is now retired from performing, her parts will be handled by Lake Street Dive's big-voiced Rachael Price, and we would not be surprised if original Airplane singer Marty Balin is added to the lineup at a later date, nor if the Dead's Kreutzmann participates on drums. Kaukonen and Casady will also perform as their duo formed in the early '70s, Hot Tuna, and we expect Kaukonen to take part in one of the Dead-themed collaborations at the festival as well. Dear Jerry Finally, there is the possibility of additional Dear Jerry-style tribute concerts on one or both coasts, perhaps circa Garcia's birthday, but more likely in the Fall. We would expect any event in California, especially if it takes place in the Los Angeles area, to feature members of Dead friends Los Lobos (also appearing at the Maryland event), who we note have have broken with tradition this year and moved their annual Cinco de Mayo festival at LA's Greek Theatre to the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston's Hermann Park. In New York, we would not be surprised to see one or more concerts, whether a single all-star tribute or a series of shows, perhaps around Thanksgiving, and featuring members of Jefferson Airplane, Phish, and even Dead-set indie-rockers The National, among others including Garcia-minded guitarists Kimock and John Kadlecik, who played Jerry in Weir and Lesh's Furthur band, as well as potential special guests Hornsby and Dead collaborator Branford Marsalis. While Lesh, arguably the leading musical force in the band these days, will not appear at festivals other than Lockn', he may participate in these additional tribute events with his own band of friends, perhaps including San Francisco-based Garcia-stylist Stu Allen on guitar. Lesh and/or another member or two is also likely to participate in Haynes' annual Christmas Jam in Asheville, NC in December. Expect an announcement of the Levi's Stadium shows as early as this week, and stay tuned for "furthur" updates...

TALKIN' ABOUT "FARE THEE WELL: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF GRATEFUL DEAD"

“I have a feeling this will come out just right. Can’t wait to find out…HERE WE GO!” - Mickey Hart

"The Grateful Dead lived an incredible musical story and now we get to write a whole new chapter. By celebrating our 50th, we get to cheer our past, but this isn't just about history. The Grateful Dead always played improvisational music that was born in the moment and we plan on doing the same this round." - Bill Kreutzmann

“It is with respect and gratitude that we reconvene the Dead one last time to celebrate - not merely the band's legacy, but also the community that we’ve been playing to, and with, for fifty years,” - Phil Lesh "Wave that flag, wave it wide and high…"

"Lookin' forward to this one, oh boy, you bet. Let's see just how much fun we can have this 4th of July." - Bob Weir<

biggest clusterfuck ever, biggest ripoff ever, biggest let down ever, biggest failure ever, biggest shaft ever put up fans asses. Boycott the ripoff dead. Do not buy scalper tickets, let them eat every one of them, these are the same people that ruined out scene years ago, and now they are doing it again, with the bands permission, Jesus, what has the world come to.

too many cry babies whining about the ticket situation. if you can come to chicago for that weekend and not see the shows ,still enjoy the scene on the lakefront and probably a simulcast at grant park and or northerly island. if you're going to keep crying stay away, don't need the negativity.

It took me a while to get to the point where unkle sam is, but I'm there. I'm not going to beat the whatever horse, but if anyone related to the band is reading these comments, I just want to say that you alienated a tried and true fan. Well done and knock yourself out in Chicago. Some people there might be able to sing along with Touch of Grey and the chorus of Casey Jones so it should be a grand time.

Music of, by, and for the people is hard to come by these days. What a shame that people (scalpers) are willing to charge $6000 for a $200 ticket (see Stubhub). $200 is already TOO much to ensure anything close to democratic access to a decent seat. Remember when rock shows cost $6 a ticket? Or even $15 a ticket? That was the hourly wage of a working/middle-class worker in the 80s. Consider the inflation rate-- who makes $200/hr now? Those of us in the middle/bottom wage rungs MIGHT be able to come up with this kind of money, but only by sacrificing in HUGE ways. I have literally taken on second jobs/gigs to take my 5yr old to see some of the remaining Music Greats (Stones etc.) The primary ticket market's inflation hurts music and democracy. Reluctantly and with some guilt, I participate in the primary market (as I just did with my MO and with TM). BUT the secondary ticket market's grossly over-inflated prices are shamefully unethical. It doesn't just hurt equitable access to music, it stomps it dead. Imo,none of us who are able to come up with that kind of secondary market money should reward scalpers. I understand the temptation if you're a rich deadhead with $6000 to spend on a $200 seat.... But for the sake of democracy and music, don't do it! Anyway, for those of you on this Board who've indicated they'll sell their extra tix to others on this Board, consider us in that offer. At a minimum, my 5yr old and I would love to go (hoping his dad can too but he's willing to pass). My 5yr old enjoys concerts and behaves beautifully- a ticket won't be wasted on him. He was two when he first heard "The Wheel"-- he doesn't usually stop and talk about the music playing, but he did that day. After that, my usual non-dancing type, would always grab my hand and ask me to dance when I played the Dead. The Dead's been a part of my family for over 40yrs (had a parakeet named Casey Jones in 1974 when I was 9yrs old :-)) See you in Chicago. We'll be there with or without tix, singing US Blues on the 4th of July in honor of all of us who didn't make it in....

Wonder if it's glitched or still chugging through requests? I'm not going to close it out yet, but I'm curious about any others . . . Thanks and Peace!

I'm with ya. Got popped once outside of MSG at an 80s show for selling my brother's (a no show) ticket for face value. Had to take a day off of work about two months later to drive back to NYC, go to court, and pay the fine. Now, it's not only legal, but accepted practice, to gouge the ^%&% out of people. The times, they are still a-changin'. Good luck to ya in Chicago, I hope the vibe is waiting there.

Laugh out loud, you know what would be really prankster like, if all us ticketless deadheads showed up, 5 million of us, blocking the streets, hanging out of vw vans, fouling up the system, just being there to... you know, be part of the whole thing. I wonder if the powers that be ever thought something like that would happen. What am I saying, of course they have, and they are ready for us. Better yet, just don't go, ignore it and the whole fake money grubbing ripoff that is this last show. Sorry if this sounds like whining, and maybe it is, but we are hurt, deeply, and when I get stabbed in the back, it hurts, especially when it is from a supposed loved one. "price wasn't anything but a knife in the back, and more of the same..."

The ticket process is a big hustle. The only people getting tickets are the ticket brokers, with their roooms full of computers, and the filthy rich!! Not too many people can afford $500 a ticket, for No View, and who would want to!? The Grateful Dead use to be a community of regular folks, having a good time, mostly on pennies!! Now, if you'd like to relive the magic, one more Saturday night, you'll have to sell your soul, or at least your car!! Thanks, but no thanks!! The memories I have are just fine! We really miss you, Jerry!!!!!

Sadly we had to wait until yesterday to find out that our mail order was rejected... :( and we got shut out of both yesterday and today's ordering systems. First time I've ever had the money to buy tickets like this and the one time we do, (tax return), we can't get them! Went onto a ticket seller site that finds tickets on lots of different searches at about twenty after 9 and the cheapest ticket was $700... one of the tickets was priced at over $13,000!!!!... took a screen shot because I didn't believe it myself. Seriously... I would have loved to be there, but I don't see us getting tickets from anywhere at this point. So happy for those lucky folks that are making it in! Love to all you people that didn't get as lucky.

Do NOT buy from brokers or you are part of the problem that is destructive to the community! Make them EAT all of them. Every. Last. One. Just look at the thousands on sale on StealHub. The online sales were an open door to brokers. They gobbled them up.

The Boy's should have known this would happen to the faithful. This should have been a mail order only event just like the old REX Foundation events in Berkeley to stop the scalpers from grabbing all the tickets & charging high prices. They stole all the tickets & the Jerry Kid's just got kicked to the curb. This event should have been at a camp site location so it would feel more like a gathering of the tribes than a hustle & bustle of a big city. It should have been at LOCKN or Watkins Glen in my opinion. I saw one ticket on stub hub for over a million & the parking for the event is in the thousands. I wonder how many grilled cheese you have to sell in the lot to attend this one. I had my Fare Thee Well in Seattle when I saw Jerry play for the last time, I could not make it to Chicago then & looks like I will not make it this time either.

I saved up for a while to buy some 50th anniversary tickets. Well finally here is Feb. 28 at 10:00 am cst time and i can't buy any tickets. In my experience i was on time, had my money barely, and ticket master's system overloaded with people . To the point that only certain people could obtain tickets for whatever reason. It would make me wait to look at tickets than would say there were none. I can't believe the internet system is so broken to make so many people go without even a chance. This is not in the spirit of The Dead and Jerry would not approve. #bummed

Such a sad turn of events today for so many unlucky fans.. I was one of the hopefuls in the mail order running, right up until Wednesday when I got my return, the very last day before CID release.. Tried the CID yesterday.. No luck.. This morning I was shut out of ticketbastard completely.. Watched that wheel spin round for multiple times.. Had so much hope that I was going to be able to attend these shows.. Just hard to believe how limited these online tickets seemed to be.. I'm gonna hold onto my hotel room at the Congress Plaza for the time being, just to see how things develope.. I'm not going to give up.. Got cash for all three nights for 2 if there is a kind head out there to let go thier extras.. pCe.. wurm

I remember the tongue-in-cheek When Push Comes to Shove tour as if it were yesterday! Your post title reminds me of the last tweet from Leonard Nimoy: "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory." I was hoping to make some new memories in July, but they aren't going to be Dead-related. Methinks the old memories will suffice, and fortunately my present thoughts won't alter the memories. I may pass on the next round of personalized license plates renewals though.

I see only one solution to this debacle & that is cancel the event & find another venue in the woods where we all can campout. Refund all the money & let the brokers eat their tickets except the mail order Heads, they can use their tickets for the new venue. Start a new mail order only for this event at the new venue in the woods so we can have a real down to earth Fare Thee Well with all our Dead Head Brothers & Sisters.

I'm still in the TicketMonster room, 5.5 hours later, spinning wheel with the damned message from the Monster saying, "Your wait time is less than 10 minutes." Smile smile smiling at that. And GDTS was a fail. I'd love to join my touring friends of past thirty years who all are reuniting from all over the USA for these shows. If any kind Head has two extra for each or any night for me and my lady friend, we'd be eternally grateful. We can offer your cost for tickets, good food and drink, and great vibes with friendly people at two day/night rooftop party in West Loop. There will be families with teens and all friendly folks. We can perhaps arrange a drive to or/and from the airport to your hotel for you, as well, if traveling from out of town and arrival/departure times work. Please message me if interested. Cheers and good luck to all.

Wow... What a total letdown. After years of supporting the Dead... Going to the shows, buying the albums, books, absorbing everything I could about a band that I love, I feel like I am entitled to some temporary bitterness. I didn't want to be a hog. I requested 1 ticket for Friday and 1 for Saturday via Mail order, which was submitted the first day. I would have been ecstatic if I'd gotten one. But nothing. Then I was subjected to this Ticketmaster bullshit which was nothing more than a scalper's wet dream. I am genuinely happy for real fans who got their tickets, but I am feeling less than satisfied. The bitterness will pass...hopefully. Just really disappointed.

Wondering if anyone did actually get through today and get tickets from Ticketmaster?I have yet to hear of anyone actually getting any tickets today!(we had 5 computers at 4 locations and never got past the 12 minute "wheel") I can tell you however, that SkyBox holders at Soldier Field were able to purchase tickets this week...Up to 6 tickets for each night.Pretty good bet most of them bought what they could and we are now seeing those on StubHub for $$$$$. My husband used to make and sell TieDye shirts to finance his Dead Show trips...look for us in the parking lot!!

I got two x 3 day, no view package for $400 - to watch TV in a horrible stadium. This was with 10 devices and 3 kids helping me for 2 hours starting at the stroke of 10 AM CST. That was the only thing that came up on all devices, the rest bombed out repeatedly or sat in a queue with the BS clock. From the get go, only no view or side obstructed views were available as 3 day packages. Apparently the ticket fees are greater if you buy them day by day. I really feel for you long time heads who traveled on tours and supported the band. You ensured sellouts for the band well before the Touch-head era. I only started listening in 2010 because of Furthur. This is the thanks you get??? What went down this week is pure greed and the fault of Peter Shapiro dangling his rich Daddy's money at Phil Lesh two years ago, breaking up Furthur. Best wishes to everyone finding tickets. Ticket sales were not cool, a mail in lottery would have been the way to go, all three nights only and a fixed price. All three shows should be streamed for free, this will be for the fans and hopefully burn the scalpers. I was willing to pay a high face value price (200 bucks) per ticket, per show. But the after market prices are past crazy! I will hope for streaming or at least all three nights simulcast to the local IMAX theater for a affordable price (50 bucks). One article said $15,000 for three nights in GA,,,,really! Also, say what you want but the Dead have historically blown the big ones, right? Can you imagine shelling out even 200 bucks a show to hear Might as Well (again!). Wish I had made the Mexican trip, would have been the same money (more or less), but hell you have a nice beach vacation. This would have been Chicago! Chicago!! Oh well, Lockn will be the place this summer.

I have two (2) hotel rooms reserved at the Travelodge Hotel Downtown Chicago, which is a short walk to Soldier's Field. Address is 65 East Harrison Wabash St and Harrison St Chicago, IL 60605 I have the rooms reserved for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights but that can be altered to fit your needs. I reserved them the day FARE THEE WELL was announced. I was denied mail order tix and I was shut out of Ticketmaster. I am looking to arrange a ticket-for-hotel room trade. Please Email me if you're interested jp1331@gmail.com

I actually have no real ax with scalpers. We all have a choice... don't buy the tix. I DO have a problem with the band : they said for years they fed off the audience as much as vice versa. Well...then why did they agree to contracts that only allowed so few tickets to go to GDTSTOO? That forum has the best chance for long time fans to score tix. The other outlets were a complete joke.Maybe its best GDTSTOO didn't more tickets....they showed they couldn't handle it anyway. Yes I'm frustrated I'm shut out after 40 yes of fandom and concerts and albums and CDs and tee shirts and all that...but I'm even more frustrated with the cluster this process has been. Yes definitely GDTRFB.o

I'm with you! This whole fiasco was really poorly handled with obvious disregard for those of us that have been following the band for over 35 years. $10,000 for tix with no view, you've got to be F-----g kidding!!

Well, I too was disappointed that I didn't get tickets today. However, I'm reading that one half million people tried to buy tickets today on Ticketmaster. So the demand is there. I'm hoping that the band decides to do a pay per view access to these shows so that we can all watch the show and maybe it will have the extra benefit of driving down the prices of the tickets in the aftermarket. After all it's not the same as being there but I would pay to watch the shows on T.V. at home and save the one thousand mile trip each way to Chicago. I'm hoping that they do something like that.

But after this weekend I'm thinking it will $200 to watch it on TV. Really disenchanted.

For sure. This is a question I have to respectfully ask you long time DH's. Never saw Jerry but did 40 Furthur shows starting in 2010 and fell in love with the music at 48. Furthur played venues as large as MSG and small as the Cap and rarely an issue getting a reasonably priced ticket. They were good if not great IMO. They bring back the 2 drummers, slap a "last ever" tag on it in a huge stadium and suddenly 1/2 million people need to be there? What am I missing? Was Drums & Space that good?

I am kind of glad I did not get tickets for this event now that I came down from my Bad Trip this morning on Ticket Master. Here is my prediction for the Chaos to come & a reason for me not to travel there to find a miracle. Tickets are being sold by people that should not have gotten one for anywhere from $500.00 to over 1 million dollars on stub hub. Parking places closest to the venue are going for $200.00 to the thousands of dollars on stub hub so there will be no place to park. The Police are going to be as thick as the thieves that are going to be breaking into the cars just like if every one remembers that was there when they came out of the projects at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium to sell phony drugs, robbed people & broke into their cars. I hope I am wrong & that everyone has a good time but I feel this Fare Thee Well show is going to be worse than the Brown Acid at Woodstock. I think it would have been a lot more memorable event that Jerry would be proud of if this was a free show at the biggest National Forest & Campground that the Boy's could have found. I am sure a lot of you remember the Ventura County Fairground shows, now that would be memorable if we went that route.

I too never got to see Jerry, but I think this will be the last time all of the ones who are left will be together. I was lucky enough to see TOO with both drummers a couple times, and it definitely gave it a different feeling than just Further. Between Bobby's health and all of them the better part of 70 years old, this is the last chance to try and capture what's left of the magic that was the Dead, in my opinion. I'm not saying id pay that much to go, plus $1k for a hotel room, but I don't begrudge anyone for wanting to be there. That being said, I would definitely wait a while for prices to go down, because they will. I am still holding out slim hope that they typed my email wrong and money order tix are coming.
