My First Show Should Have Been 5-13-73!!
Like many others, I was introduced to the Dead at college--a smaller state school in the midwest. When we heard they were playing at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines--on a Sunday--screw Monday's classes!! We scored tickets and started making plans.
That included letting my girlfriend back home know, so she could get off work and come with. She was not familiar with the Dead at the time and all she could think of was traveling in my Fiat 850 Spyder. Not how small it was, nor the rough ride. She knew how often it broke down. She was absolutely right.
So, I SOLD MY TICKETS!! I felt that if she wasn't gonna go, I shouldn't either. I still have trouble even thinking about that (I know--gotta let go!! I did make up for it later--but!).
My buddies DID go--so, at least I heard stories!! Wow. Wall 'o Sound. Beautiful outdoor setting--ok--some storms came in. But even that made for a great story. The versions I got are a bit fuzzy thanks to my roommate's lab partner who had a connection for some simply wonderful windowpane. But it seems as the sky darkened and it started looking sketchy, Bobby pulls out "Looks Like Rain" and right on cue, (remember--they're altered) the storm starts to break up just as Jerry celebrates with "Here Comes Sunshine"!!
And this is just one of the numerous stories they shared with me of that magical weekend I missed. I am glad I heard the stories, tho. I made sure I went with them (without my girlfriend) to St. Louis later that year!!
A few days later, the guys I sold my tickets to came to our door. I opened it and they both simply lit up with huge smiles and went on and on about how happy they were that they had gone to the show! Silver lining for me, at least.
Another silver lining is before they left, they opened this paper bag they had with them. In it was a home-made pipe. It was some kind of plastic and rubber face mask like a WWII fighter pilot might wear. It was fastened to a length of rubber tubing with a hose clamp holding a piece of plumbing that, with the help of a piece of screening, was the bowl. Very ominous looking.
One of them looked at me as he gave it to me as a 'thank you' for the tickets and said "It's name is 'Killer'. Be careful how you use it!" Truer words have never been spoken to me!!
I made sure I went to Des Moines the next spring!!
