Wow, no post's here in jerryland.I guess I'll have to pop the cherry... I have a question. But first a little background. While I listening to gd 1977/05/03 - Tuesday with a smokin might as well as my backdrop Im astounished on how Jerry's Travis Bean guitar sounds, it's pretty good!! This got me thinking, about, IMHO, jerry best guitar, Wolf! Wolf replaced Jerry's Travis Bean in Sept '77 The fall of '77 was the dead's best of the year with wolf sounding like no other. What a difference in tone and style!!! Travis B sounds really nice in 05-03 (as I have Sugaree ripping in the background) but 11-04 is on another planet. Same year, very different shows as it relates to Jerry's guitars(s) Wolf was the diamond in the rough. After it's 2nd commeth and it's new Dimarzio pick ups there was no stopping her, hence a solid year 1978!! My personal fav year. It's a Wonder why Jerry retired her early?? Another thing I like about wolf was the color and the pattern of the wood. Dried purpleheart makes for amazing and unique characteristics with a touch of elegance. Anybody else have a favourite Jerry guitar?? I guess it's some food for thoughts. Let's here 'em folks Lossless

My favs from a sound perspective are the Travis Bean and the Wolf, today at least :)The notes just oozed, slinked and slid on those guitars, specially the Bean during 76/77. Nirvana of guitar sound IMHO. And the sound from the Wolf in the GD Movie and recordings is stellar. However Rosebud was an absolutely gorgeous guitar. The Cripe Bolt guitar was cool, but like Blair Jackson said, the way Garcia had the sound structured was more of an acoustic/pickin' angle and never really did it for me during the super mega Garica solos and the fanning and jammin that worked so well on the other guitars. Tiger is up there too for sur'. Definately have the most good memories of this guitar since it was the main axe during my years. And at JGB shows. And then there is the starburst Strat, the Alligator strat from Graham Nash. While I wasnt around when Garcia played the SG, I always associated that guitar with Angus Young so I get a chuckle out of those old pics. The sound rocked. “The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”

When I think of Jerry cherry poppin' I cain't help but to think of the command he had with those Strats from the Fall of '71 on through '72 (he used the Strat for a while in '73 but altered his approach). He was just strokin' harmonics at will - those notes that make your pupils just dilate! I guess a lot of it had to do with through what he was playin', and the rooms, but jeez - but, for me, Lossless Head, it just doesn't get much better ... gracias a dios! "From day to day, just lettin' it ride, You get so far away from how it feels inside, You can't let go, 'cause you're afraid to fall, But the day may come when you can't feel at all."

Of time at Dozin. I had started putting together my own 'Jerry-rig' based on the 90's rig. It's what I've been using when ever I play electric. Groove tubes Trio and Macintosh 2300. The custom or Alembic guitar will be far in the future, can't afford it these days. But, on the topic of Jerrys guitars, I also liked the Fender sound with the Strat's bell tone all over Europe 72'. I must say my favorite Guitar sound is Tiger, that's "THE" sound. THE Jerry tone. The sound I try to mimic when I play a riff like Althea. Sliding up to a B minor with a deep throaty tone. If I could have any guitar in the world, I would have the Tiger. Even though, I know I could never make it sound like the man could.

Tiger is my fav for its looks, color and inlay but it was Heavy. I dont know how he wore it night after night, I could never do it. I am way too weak. That being said I also think Wolf is stunning looking. And I got to echo the Strat is not what I think of with Jerry in mind. Strats are for SRV and Jimi, right. But i love the tone and playability Jerry brought with a strat in his hands. Europe 72 says it all.

Didn't Jerry say something like he switched to electric to "hear the sounds longer"...or something to that effect...pretty cool. Great subject.I cut my ears on the Travis Bean. I always thought it was "Beam"... Oh well...listen and learn. I guess I was sort of looking forward to the strat 'cuz that was what I mostly liked from the Europoe '72 songs. I quickly adapted to the sound of the "Bean" and still very much like the "high-tension-rubber-wire-sounds" 'specially on those Dancin' jams. Resistance to change is natural. As Wolfy appeared I was a little sad. What happened to that hot white guitar. ( did it have an aluminum neck or something like that??) Then, the new dimensions became clearer and again, the sounds became longer and fuller and furthur and furthur. "I knew without asking she was into the blues"

I was 16 years old when i saw a tag on a Travis Bean guitar w/ a picture of Jerry on it saying "Travis Bean The best damn production guitar made today" In Roosevelt Feild Mall on Long island!! Two week's later i saw him playing one @ The Calderone Concert Hall In Hempstead NY and the opening Sugaree Blew me away and I've been loving that sound ever since !! But i think it was jerry's approach to the different guitars that has made him my favorite guitarist of all time! Oh how i wish i had bought that Travis Bean back in the day!!Rogue

I think "soundwise" for the most part "Tiger" had the sweetest sound. It had that signiture "bell tone" that was just beautiful. The later Tiger spin-offs like Rosebud and Lightning Bolt were not as pure tone wise, even when the midi effects were not being used. I think he was using the Graham Nash Strat (Alligator) during my favorite shows of 71', but I'm not sure. There were a few other guitars he used in 71' as well. But whatever it was he was using during the Fillmore East shows really allowed Jerry to reach the stratosphere (no pun intended) in those jams.

The dude who bought Jerry's assorted household effects -- the same guy who auctioned off the toilet last year -- is now auctioning off everything else, including the kitchen sink. And before you say anything snarky, because lord knows I did, keep in mind that the proceeds benefit a fine charity here in Oakland, one for which my own dogsitter also throws fundraisers! So, while I am not in the market for Jerry's sink, here's the info.

Listening to the Crossroads Festival, I couldn't help but think where Jerry would be now. At 65 he could have still been rocking. Hell, BB King looked and sounded pretty good and he's 81. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but damn if the GD are still not my favorite band ever. I listen to a bunch of others and there is nobody, NOBODY that did what the Grateful Dead did. The lyrics, the sound, the full spectrum of music they produced is still unique. I love popping on a Jerry Garcia Band concert or a Dead Show from way back when and telling my kids "I was there!". They (10 & 6) can pick Jerry out without me even telling them who is playing. Tonight, I'll suck down a cold one and dust off those rusty strings and play some Jerry Tunes. Happy Birthday! Sorry we fans made your life so insane but that was in the cards. Diamond Jim

Hey Everyone! Just thought I would share this video clip I found on YouTube. I have looked here before and this seems like a new one. You have to wait it out a bit as they do not let the Jer man in for some play time until towards the end of the song, but it is so great to see him totally boppin and groovin with this hot latino band! Jerry's latino roots are surely shining through in this clip! Jerry Garcia and Ruben Blades Latino Session http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWfYew3s_Nw Enjoy! Brother A

I do miss Jerry a lot ... and also The Grateful Dead as a band ... the band that still should have been around today ... playing the music ... bringing joy to the world ... It's a sad feeling Jerry is no longer among the living ... but on the other hand he lives on through the music ... for that I'm eternal Grateful ... :-) Micke in Sweden, deadhead since nov 1978 (Garcia-fan since Spring 1976)

Happy Birthday Jerry- You changed the course and purpose of my life , through the places your guitar tool me to, and the raw emotion of your imperfect but yet heartfelt vocals.
