    Sirius Radio Channel 32
Jerry week is something special and I think it is easy to overlook the importance of this time of year for those of us who still have the hope that there will be something to fill the void that started after summer tour of '95. I know the P.C. way to portray it is that we are lucky to have all the various acts that have sprung from the Grateful Dead family, but every August I am reminded of the amazing 30 years of the Grateful Dead with the Birthday of Jerome John Garcia on the 1st. And then on the 9th I am taken back to the incredible loss that took place at Serenity Knolls in Marin County, CA. Truth be told, the Garcia/Grisman work from the 90's is the proof that there was a whole arsenal of material that was still left to be brought to life by the musical virtuoso who is celebrated on Sirius. In Wilmington. NC (not a stronghold of the Grateful Dead necessarily) one of the local radio stations dedicated August 1st to playing music by Jerry and for Jerry (songs that JGB, Garcia/Grisman and other side projects) covered. It was an unexpected tribute which made me realize even more that as amazing as the Grateful Dead are as a band, the magic that takes the music over the top is the presence of Jerry. It is his spirit and once-in-a-generational ability to transcend time and space that made the Grateful Dead community a family that continues strong well over a decade past his lifetime. Please do not get me wrong, Bobby, Phil, Pigpen, Mickey, Billy et all are Rock and Roll hall of famers who deserve (and require) the absolute highest respect affordable to amazing musicians/all-around-people - but Jerry is the ingredient that cannot be ignored. Even if it may seem trite to give 8 or 9 days to focus on an obvious aspect of the channel's library, I appreciate the effort greatly. Truth be told, every day is a part of the wake for Jerry Garcia. Some days it is the laughing, happy celebration of his accomplishments and remembrance of funny stories. Some days it is the denial that he is gone and nothings gonna bring him back. Some days it is peacefully reflecting on the easy times between tours when life is slow and wonderful and I discover a legion of mary show that I haven't listened to in 14 years. Other days it is a NEED to hear a Dark Star from 1970. What is important for me to point out is that, no matter what, even if it seems quite obvious, everything that is done to honestly remember what makes the Grateful Dead channel awesome, what makes the Grateful Dead community strong, is necessary to keep it going. Let us never forget Jerome John Garcia and his importance to each and every one of us. Thanks Sirius 32. All the best Drewstar

Given that it is a Grateful Dead channel, isn't every week Jerry week to a degree?

Yes, but Jerry Week has 9 days. Maybe it has something to do with the 7/29 merger of Sirus Radio and XM Radio? More days, more money!

I became a lifetime member of Sirius Satellite Radio 3 days before the Grateful Dead Channel went on the air. My receiver is set on channel 32 and very seldom do I change it. My suggestion is if are not a member of Sirius, join before the fall when the new pricing structures will go into effect.

Peace and love on this special day in history...maybe one day it could be a national holiday.

the phrase may have originated with Patti Smith, whose essay on the subject is a true don't-miss.

Since the Dead have flooded the market with new (and upcoming) 'official' releases, I wonder what gives with the much-heralded 'Jerry Vault'? Is there some kind of legal battle going on that is blocking potential Jerry releases? I know that the Jerry catalog isn't a part of dead.net or GDP, but what's the deal? What happened with 'Pure Jerry'? It was great while it lasted. Anyone know anything about this?

Yeah, more Jerry! The "Pure Jerry" series is great, but "The Jerry Garcia Collection" seems to have petered out with Volume One - The Legion of Mary, three years ago. I thought that the "collection" was going to be an ongoing series. What's up with that?

very gentle.i have seen a report about jerry's legacy, and his widow said that the ice-cream,together with the ties are making millions, while the royalties for his music are more like peanuts..i could not believe that, but.!!!!!anyway there has to be enough Jerry-music amongst the people,so that everybody can get his share of our favorite-musicans heavenly sounds.

I truly hope that the information that Frankly provided is not true, but it does have the ring of truth, doesn't it? What bothers me is the irony of it all: celebrating a musician's life and legacy without releasing any of his music. Sure, Sirius will be playing some of it for a few days, but fans especially like the CDs. After all it's been a few years now.

Sirius radio has revolutionized radio listening. I can listen to Dead concerts all the way on the three hour drive to visit my kids (and grandson). I love the way they are giving Jerry his due and especially a 9-day week. He deserves it! I would love to see more Garcia releases, it's too bad that it seems that money is the reason it's being held back. Until then...tune to channel 32. Happy birthday Jer!

I too have noticed that the Jerry tunes have come to a strange hault. Not sure if its because of some legal issue or not. Sirius XM merger is not supposed to make a subscription more expensive. They are saying that there are going to be several subscription options.
