At Salt Lake City in February, the band revives, brilliantly, Dylan?s ?Visions of Johanna,? one of the classic special moments. The spring tour is uneventful, and is followed smoothly by West Coast May shows. The summer tour begins in Highgate, Vermont, with many thousand ticketless people causing problems. Down the line, two Dead Heads are struck by lightning in Washington. At Deer Creek, not only do thousands break into the show but people inside assist them by vandalizing the fence. The band sees it all and is freaked. The next night?s show is cancelled, the first such band decision in thirty years. After a good St. Louis show, fans at a campground crowd onto a porch to avoid a massive downpour; the roof caves in and more than 100 go to the hospital, although only one is seriously hurt. It is now officially the ?Tour from Hell.? The tour ends in Chicago without incident, but a month later, having checked into a drug treatment center, Jerry Garcia dies in his sleep of a heart attack. In November the remaining band members meet and agree that ?Grateful Dead? will never again apply to a performing band. The Grateful Dead?s long strange trip is done.
