These two shows would make an excellent box set along with another show on the tour with a good source.

But the idea of flipping in the middle of a song (3X no less) is totally hack, though I do understand the limitations.

Dicks Picks Vol 3 and 4 on VINYL from original tapes March 19th
Hey Gang,We are releasing Dicks Picks vol 3 and 4 on vinyl March 19th. You can pre order now at www.BrookvaleRecords.com These are from the original tapes and mastered for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman. See below for his comments. Thanks for your time. FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES! Mr Norman talks about mastering vol 3 and 4. “I was excited to get the chance to remaster the early Dick’s Picks’ releases for vinyl…they were originally mastered for CD in 1995-96, and I was looking forward to hearing the 1/4″ source tapes once again, 17 years later. What I didn’t expect was the dramatic improvement the new mastering gives to these classic releases. The original CD resolution is 44.1KHz/16bit (as is any released CD), while the mastering I am now doing for the vinyl releases is 96KHz/24bit. I’m now using a state-of-the-art analog to digital converter (Pacific Microsonics Model 2)….and I’ve probably gotten better at doing this over the years! I used the original CDs as a guide for the new mastering, but when listening to the CDs I feel like I’m listening in black and white, while the new mastering feels like I’m listening in color. It’s very exciting! A few observations: the mixes for Dick’s Picks Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 couldn’t be more different. The Pembroke Pine show (Vol.3) is quite bass strong and powerful. The Fillmore East show (2/13-14/12) on the other hand is very bright and a little bass shy. Both represent the ears and interpretations of the mixers at the time (Betty Cantor Jackson at Pembroke Pines, and Bear at the Fillmore East), and both capture the quality and excitement of these shows. I did some equalization on both shows to enhance the presentation but kept true to what the original mixers intended. As typical of all Grateful Dead shows, both these two shows are very dynamic….there’s a wide range of volume from quiet to very loud. I tried to keep the dynamics intact, with very little limiting, using limiting mainly as protection against digital overs. In choosing the songs for each side of vinyl, the goal was to be true to the flow of the show and keep the fidelity as high as possible. There is a physical limitation to the length of a vinyl side….if it gets too long there is a loss of bass and level. Ideally the sides would be no longer than 20 minutes, and for the most part that was accomplished. However there are a few sides that are longer than ideal, but because of the way the music lays out there was no way around a few longer lengths. Also because of those side length constraints, there are some songs that had to be split in two (i.e. Vol.4 Dark Star, The Other One, and Lovelight)…sorry, you’re going to have to flip the record to get the entire “good stuff”. Considering that these tapes are 40 years old (in the case of Vol. 4, Fillmore East), they sound phenomenal! There are some issues on the original recording that can’t be fixed (i.e.. L/R movement side to side in Vol. 3 Eyes of the World), but that in no way takes away from this great music.”

now that i've digested this beast. I love it, the music is top notch and now that you exquisitely marketed the hell out of it and got your $200 bucks a pop it's time to release the rest of the shows from each stand at the going rate. Everyone here knows there wasn't a bad show that spring, by the Summer Tour they were about to self combust (RIP Brent). The last night of the stand mentality was okay but, let's have the rest of the best... I've been seeing the band since 2/4/78 and continue to see FURTHUR as well as spend my hard earned coin on the products, so Europe put me into having to work overtime hours to afford it and though it was great and the setlists were somewhat static I love it! I'd love to be able to purchase entire runs from Uptown Theater,Chicago or Spectrum, Philly. Red Rocks, Greek, Frost etc hell It would be nice to have to the option to buy any show from 1989 and where are the videos man? You guys gotta have at least a couple of spot on 92-95 shows to share!? The cover bands in that AVMT night out at the movies were fantastic, release that Alpine show with the covers project bonus disc...Let's keep talkin' about August 1972 will that movie ever get released? What the hell happened to the JERRY GARCIA BAND SHOWS??? How can you guys not want to collect all of this bread man... take my money please. Give some of that church/warfield 90-95 jGB. RANT MODE OFF NOW. Thanks for the extremely expensive offerings that I will continue to buy. Gerry

Please--No More Box Sets of Multiple Shows!
If my vote counts for anything, then please, please, please limit the size of releases to one show or a two or three disc compilation of an era. One of the things that always separated the Grateful Dead from other bands was the egalitarian way they treated all of their fans. By coming out with these multi-disc releases that retail for hundreds of dollars, they are creating two classes of Deadheads--those that can afford the music and those that can't--and that is not what the Grateful Dead was, or is, about. The music should be there for as many people as possible. I bought the Europe '72 box (even though I really could not afford it). And even though I felt personally burned when they finally released them as individual shows, I was encouraged by what appeared to be a return to the good old Grateful Dead egalitarianism of yester-year. For something that supplied so much spiritual juice for so many of us for so many years, it is saddening to see the music become the property of only those who have hundreds of surplus dollars laying around. I believe that the model that began with the much beloved Dick's Picks series is the one that should take precedence. The vast majority of Heads can afford a release that's $20 to $30, and we're damn glad to have them. While there is a lot in the new 1990 box set that I'd love to hear, I just can't justify dropping $200 for it all; whereas if these shows were released individually over a period of time, there is a chance I might get them all. I also have a lot of trouble with the idea of limited releases. If this is something the Dead and its affiliates have to do for economic reasons, I can accept that. But again, it seems it is creating two sets of Deadheads--those with, and those without. I think I can speak for the great majority of us here when I say that the music the Grateful Dead created transcends mere entertainment. In many respects, experiencing the Grateful Dead held certain spiritual dimensions. To deprive a fair amount of the Deadhead community our musical mana just does not seem right to me. And I'm not one of those "music should be free" fools that were so well captured in the "Festival Express" movie--I am more than willing to pay for my proverbial ticket so I can take the ride. I just feel that there is a Middle Way here that the Dead did a great job of holding to for many, many years (and should be commended for it). All I am asking is that they should stay true to the principles that guided them so well for so many years. I've bought a great deal of amazing music from the Dead organization for many years (going back to the early 90s), and I hope to continue to do so. But there may come a time when I can't afford to, depending on how things go with the releases. Please Grateful Dead family, "let there be songs to fill the air!"

These are two kick-ass shows from a very unrepresented year. These two complete shows would fit on six discs. They don't need a bunch of useless crap with them -- just digi-trays, an essay about each show and high quality CDs in a nice slip case without cowboys and indians artwork. Make everybody happy and sell it for 39.99. Please? You're killing me with deluxe, souped-up $200 editions!

Any of the Las Vegas runs from the 1990's AND buy the rights from the opening acts to include them in there too! (Santana, Steve Miller, Sting, Traffic, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND!) That would be cool! I would love to see a box seet come out from a whole run like that! All the sets from all 3 shows! How about a box set of the Shoreline run from August 1991. A real winner! Egypt 1978 Box Set with lots of photos and the best of the music! I would buy it! How about a DVD of that too! The Return of the Warlocks Box set from Hampton 1989. Would also make a great DVD set too! A new Years Eve Box Set! All of the New Years shows the band played - EVER! Could also do different themed box sets! 4th of July!, April Fools Day, etc..... Well, thems some idears. (^_^)

I agree with above.... Santana/Dead or SMB/GD would be a great box set. I would also suggest the 10/89 Run in Hampton, the Shoreline run from Aug 91 or perhaps a Cal Expo box set with various shows from there or say a Shoreline box set etc... Perhaps a MSG box set or LA Forum..you get the idea...Eric

I was one of those who pre-ordered before the pre-order page was officially "live". It was a sad moment when I read the email explaining the snafu. Although I have high quality recordings of the November 73 Winterland shows, I'd happily plunk down some cash for an even higher quality, nicely boxed, official release! Hey, if it was pretty much in the can already, why not go ahead and let it rip? Thanks!

I would love to hear box sets of a full run at a given venue For example 1. Winterland 11/9 - 11/11 '73 2. Boston 6/9 - 6/12 '76 3. Anchorage 6/19 - 6/21 '80 4. Boston 12/29 - 12/31 '69 5. Chicago 12/03 - 12/05 '79 6. Boston 9/20 - 9/26 '91 7. New York 9/14 - 9/20 '90

Talking with my friend about how this should be put out and the traditional "Box Set" would be too much. The first thing that comes to mind is making it available to download. I think a lot of folks are donwloading more music and jewel cases are becoming things of the past. Now to make these available to the folks that don't download, how about just a spool like the spools of blank CD's you buy. No need for any crazy box with all sorts of graphics. Just a spool of CD's with the infromantion printed right on them. Check Out My Orignal Music at myspace.com/salaversano

With the spaceship on the cover....At least 86-89 ( tons of gems like Box, Roadrunner (not a breakout per se but a damn good version; the great Terrapin from 3.24.87, The 88 breakouts and slamming 3/27/88 show. Oh and those "Formally The Warlocks" shows. They were kinda decent. “The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”

I'm also into box sets that cover entire runs at the same venue. I'd like to see a box with the 6 Orpheum 76 shows in their entirety: 7/12-7/14 and 7/16-7/18. It would be beyond incredible to have EVERYTHING available from Europe 72 released. Perhaps that could be released by week in boxes and/or available as individual releases. It would definitely be cool to see an audio/video release of 8/27/72 (with both cds and dvds) too. I'll post more as I think of things... :-)

I would love a box set of a full 1970 show! The ones from mid 1970 with:Acoustic Dead NRPS with Jerry on steel guitar set 1 of Electric Dead set 2 of Electric Dead 1970 is my favorite year in the GD history, just for the sheer magnitude of how long the shows were and how good they were! Sadly, I know that few of these full shows were recorded... even by the audience. But there MUST be a couple of FULL shows from this historic period in the vault... please... there just has to be...

How 'bout a Crate Set from 10/19/71 to 12/31/72? That'd be Vol.1. Vol.2 would be from 2/09/73 to 10/20/74. That'd pretty much do it. I agree 100% with Sunshine-daydre and Estim8ed. How about rereleasing this marvelous run. I too put my order in after it sold out of the numbered editions. It would also put a crimp into it being sold on Ebay for upwards of $400.00 a shot. This run is too important to only be enjoyed by a select few who actually got them.

Since it's out of print: this thing is fair game to being copied and spread around. Who wants a copy??? The fact that they haven't put this up for download on the offical site just goes to show how stupid Rhino is when it comes to making money from the vault. Or maybe that is their plan to sit on the vault for 7 years and release next to nothing. Oh I forgot about the cool puzzles and shirts they are selling. Good ROI on that stuff, what a bunch of financial wizards these Rhino guys are proving to be. It's almost November and not a peep about what they are planning on offering for the Christmas season. That was always fun looking forward to the new DVD or Dick's Pick and montly downloads. Man those were the days. Now I just spend my money on other stuff. Keep up the good work Rhino.

Hey Bought all the dicks picks! would continue to buy.... But alas snip its and partials are uninteresting to me and most every head I know... Shows and tours and runs have a flow. We were heads because of the personal interaction between us the heads and them the band. Sometimes the divide, in reality, was large as they lived there own lives and were separate from us but at the show we were part of the Geshtault ( sorry spelling) .... Part of the band.... Not having the end to end experience really kills it for me and many many others... This is all said with the utmost respect and love. Your vault sounds better than everything that circs and if it get released it will sell and the circ sources will fall away... I'm not saying that it has to be Dicks Picks... I'm sure Dave knows what we want... How about the whole tour of Europe '72... The Acadamy Run.... Classic Winterland Runs... Spotlight on MSG... Go to University (great 70's university Gym shows.. Ala every time they played Cornell), May '77, Spotlight on the wall of sound., comparison boxes of 73 vs 74 set lists and playing styles ( take shows or runs form the consecutive years at the same venue release all the shows and write white papers on the development of the music and playing. Include comments form great tape traders and tapers). We love to read that stuff the book alone is worth the price of admission. If you involve us the community in your plans and releases and we will beat a path to the store! We don't care if they circ in SBD form or not... They will sell non the less we all always want the best quality and we know its in the vault.... Non circ sources are always a treat but don't let it stop you form creating master classes in the bands development over time... How about High res 24bit show releases! The packaging for the stuff I talked about above is not critical. They can come in a CD sleeve or sleeve pages...with printed out notes for a binder. You can sell the binder as well (3ring). And everyone populates the binders as the shows and releases come out with the notes. It would create a whole library to reference. Less cost in packaging and art work... You can sell accessories to it like the little things people put on there crocks alla tabs for organization. A data base plug in to track the collection. Download capability for shows controlled by the plug in to verify and guarantee copy write. Through the plug in have community connection through chat so everyone who has the interface and shows can swap ideas all through your interface... That is marketing control. That is building community. Thats the way to maximize sales and loyalty... You would be creating and controlling the 'Digital Parking Lot of tour'... Have weekly listening parties that all heads and vault people can chat over INCLUDE US! Sell Inserts for art on the site for people to buy and slide in to customize there collecting experience... I could go on and on... You have such a great opportunity. If you track the sites out there today you have a lot of bridges to re build but you will and can as in the end WE LOVE YOU! Any way... I love the band have supported you for years and will continue to This is not a rant and was written with love so take it that way Love IMINCHARGE

I am listening to the Grateful Dead Channel on Sirius and David Lemieux's This Day In Grateful Dead History. DL has been playing cuts from Winterland '73 on this past Friday, Saturday and today's installments. In his introduction, he has been making a point of saying what a great release this run of shows would be! In fact he has been exhorting the listeners to lobby the powers that be for this 9 disc release along the lines of the Fillmore West 1969 box.So, in that spirit~ PLEASE RELEASE A BOX SET OF THE 1973 WINTERLAND SHOWS!!!!! :^)

had a few more thoughts for the ideal pigpen anthology. this would include a DVD biography with lots of interviews with the pig himself as well as others, rare behind the scenes images and film footage and some choice concert material of mr. pig at his best. also included would be a book with more bio stuff and pictures. and of couse several CDs of pigger's best performances. the dillon gym show from 70 would have to be included. this show had the "good lovin'" with the "buck & a quarter" rap as well as the "lovelight" where our friend plays matchmaker and pairs up guys and girls from the audience. also need would be the carousel show in 69 with him and janis. hope someone is interested in putting this together!
