Call it what you will, the sun was beating down hard and bright on that fateful day in Veneta, Oregon when the Grateful Dead heeded Ken Kesey's call to help save the family Creamery. The 100-degree and rising temperatures did not deter the band who were still riding high from their adventures across the pond. It did not discourage filmmakers John Norris, Phil DeGuere, and Sam Field who gained entry into the Dead's tight-knit world with their promise to capture the culture and integrity of the scene. And it certainly didn't inhibit the estimated 20,000 Dead Heads who could not believe their, well, pot...luck.

In fact, this blistering day turned out to be a near-perfect little piece of the Grateful Dead experience and it is with great pleasure, that 41 years later we can present Sunshine Daydream to you the way it was meant to be seen and heard. As Prankster Ken Babbs puts it in the liner notes, this previously unreleased concert film "is a time capsule, a vessel full of exuberant free spirit as exhibited by the enraptured, edified, and satisfied concertgoers, a spirit that can still resound, that can still fill our hearts with joy, with compassion, with that sense and knowledge of our oneness, our open sharing and caring and the belief that the goodness inherent in all of us will continue to shine just as it did in Veneta, Oregon, in 1972. And will prevail." And prevail it does, with its pristine sound and beautiful visuals, the band transporting the audience to other-worldly planes with definitive versions of their beloved songs like "Bertha," "China>Rider," "Playing In The Band,""Greatest Story Ever Told,""Dark Star," and "Sing Me Back Home" and the Dead Heads in their wild and, quite literally, naked glory.

Prediction

A vaccine for C-19 will not be available until January 2022. Dead and Company will try to make up for lost time with both a spring 2022 tour and a summer 2022 tour. That will work out just exactly perfect for a two day gig on August 27 and 28 in Veneta, Oregon. The 27th will of course celebrate 50 years since the Creamery Picnic and the 28th will celebrate 40 years since the last time the Dead played on that hallowed ground.
This is complete conjecture not based in reality. But one can dream.
And I was there in 72 and 82.

I was at Fair last year too…

I was at Fair last year too for the 50th anniversary and got to see Phil with the Terrapin Fam Band. Obviously undescribable. Actually got to see Babbs at a Holloween party for Fair in October shortly after. And of course it's nice to see Zane, Ken Keseys son, every year with the second bus. But NOW, because of Covid, for the first time in 50 years (not including the Old Renaissance) there will not be a Oregon Country Fair. Mind you this is a non-profit, educational organization that also uses that space year round for community events. On top of that they had been put under pressure because of zoning laws and pretty much getting grandfathered into what they were doing, and by not being able to have an event could potentially cause them to lose they're agreements with the county. But they got that figured out, still scary. None the less not having Fair this year is a hard hit for everyone. And if you haven't heard they are preparing not to have Fair next year. Because you have to prepare to the worst case scenario. Look at the festival scene right now and tell me it's not scary. They could make it two years though and still come back. With no help. But don't let this conversation go by without input. Fair has always been there for us. And I'm prepared to do whatever to be there for Fair. I was stoked to see this, esspecially after they took down the video from YouTube. This has always made me feel "At Home", at home. This isn't the fucking Eagles or Michael Jackson. They wouldn't have lasted through this. I'm 26. I've been listening for less than a decade, soon we will be closer to a 100 year anniversary. I think we're all still trying to figure out "what it all means". Why does it keep going? Where, when will it end? Who knows. Who cares. But I know something was starting here! Only love. From Oregon. Until things we've never seen seem familiar. All good things in all good time.

Wish I could of been thereabout I was 7 years old, pigpen was gravely ill then, sad but true,Bird song,Playing in the Band and the most Excellent version of Dark star are stand out in my mind, some folks hype 1977,they were blowing minds before that year,1972 was indeed a heavy hitter year, wish they would put out a pigpen documentary it would do major justice for those to young to get a full flavor of what he was all about, great songs that were sung by a real person who ate ,slept and lived it, wish he was still here with us.

Yahhh-booooo!!! Blu-ray only on Deadnet. Bummer. It wouldn't bother me a bit paying the extra bucks (euros in my case) but ordering from here in Italy you get caned by customs duty. So I guess it's Amazon and DVD for me. But I'm gonna groove all the same. And by the way, I love Rhino. And I don't work for them either. Ciao from Italia.

The dead.net exclusive editions - both Blu-ray and DVD varieties can be ordered from a couple of European on-line retailers. The Blu-ray version can be purchased from Spin CDs in England for 70.50 Euros (more than from dead.net because they also have to pay import duties etc.). To Blu Ray or not to Blu Ray...

It's only an extra $5 for the Blu Ray. I thought it was $20 for some reason. It has to be better quality somewhat right?

order status

Today, my order status went from "in process" to "backordered". Hope it's just the typical problems GDM has showing real order status (I received the Europe 72 box before it had been billed to my credit card and Fillmore 1969 box while it was still listed as "in process"). You'd think with the power of Rhino they could invest in a system that actually tells you where your order is -- especially when the release date is tomorrow. Having said that, I'm grateful for every release.

If you have a blu-ray players,id DEFINITLY go with BLu-Ray. The audio AND video will be much better

Actually, the audio on blu is only better if it has either DTS Master Audio or Dolby Tru HD. Dolby Digital 5.1 is the same on DVD or Blu. Can someone with the blu confirm the audio specs? It would be much appreciated.

The audio from the BLu-ray is Dolby True HD. I was a bit surprised to see the video in a 4:3 format instead of widescreen(16:9) I know its old,but so is The Grateful Dead Movie,which I believe is from 74' or 75'

HDCD??

I not technically savvy, but I was under the impression an HDCD has a higher Bitrate and sample rate(24 bit and 88.200) than a normal CD (16 bit and 44.1000Khz) Garcia live,descibed as HDCD has the rates of 24 bit,88.2000khz) so why are the Sunshine Daydream CD's,descibed as HDCD, only 16 bit, 44.1000khz?) What am i missing here???

Hey drbaz - HDCD essentially takes a 20 bit/44.1 khz audio track and transforms that using a proprietary algorithm to 16 bit/44.1 khz, which ends up on the CD. A normal CD player can play the transformed track without a problem. If you have a CD player or AV Receiver that has HDCD decoding built in, then it will be uncompressed to 20 bit for playback. The Garcia Live series at 24 bit/88.2 khz is NOT on a CD. Those are lossless downloads.

Thanks for the info on the Dolby Tru HD audio on the blu. Dolby Tru HD is a true lossless format the has 192khz/24 bit audio for six channel sound. Dolby digital is very compressed, and the difference is easily perceptible. Frankly, the audio upgrade on blu, with lossless sound if a bigger upgrade than the picture for me. As to the aspect ratio, if the movie was shot on 16mm (as opposed to super 16) the native aspect ratio would not be widescreen. Turing into a widescreen film woul cut off information on the top and bottom, and would harm the quality of the picture. We don't want widescreen necessarily, just the origional aspect ratio.

My copy arrived today, really nice box. I'm still pissed about not getting the poster free. If I had gone to my local record store and paid less for this, I would get the poster free. Pre-order from Dead.net and pay $15.00 if you want one. I'll get over it and let the music play.

Bonus Doct

Where is the Bonus Documentary Grateful Days? On the DVD DISC? Still waiting for it to arrive. Is it only on the Disc from Dead.net?

Blu audio

Well a helpful music lover said the audio on the Blu is Dolby Tru HD, but I received a response from customer service saying it is Dolby Digital 5.1. Could a happy Blu owner confirm the audio specs?

A poster, yes.. But...

...I didn't feel too put out by that... ...but now it is reported that the "Bonus" documentary -- supposedly included *only* on the dead.net version of the release -- actually IS included in the much cheaper retail version too?! (I haven't bought the retail, but my understanding is that in the disc authoring process TPTB simply altered the retail DVD menu to eliminate the link to the "Grateful Days" doc. But they left the doc still on the disc, findable using your computer to browse or rip the disc contents -- just not playable directly on most DVD players/softwares; but rip it and there it is. OR SO I AM TOLD... Another, albeit somewhat hidden, bonus for the retail customer. And one less "bonus" for the dead.net early buyers.) Oh dead.net! I am usually a pretty staunch defender, but it is beginning to seem that you really did hose us a little on this release -- didn't you?

most definitely IS TrueHD format audio. Customer service, as always, don't know shit.

UNKNOWN DISC

The Blu-Ray will not play on my OPPO BDP-83. Unkown Disc keeps appearing even after rebooting and the player has the latest software version. Dead.net said they are sending me a return shipping label generated by email that will take 24 to 72 hours. Once they receive the product back then they will ship out a replacement. By the time all this happens I'm sure a month will go by. Very disappointing.

Sunshine Daydream - BluRay audio problem

Anyone else having a problem getting the disc to play with 5.1 sound? I select it from the menu, but when I play the movie, it changes back to regular stereo. Just can't get it to stay. Other blu-rays ok though. Frustrating. :(

Blu Ray Fail.

I pre-ordered this release for $60+ and waited several weeks to get it in the mail only to find out that the Blu Ray disc won't play in my BD player. I didn't get a Sunshine Daydream, I got a Disc Error. Disappointment would be an understatement. What the hell did you guys do to this disc? And what am I supposed to do now, contact customer service and wait several more weeks for another disc that may or may not play? Pretty packaging is all well and good, but it doesn't mean shit if the content won't play! Dean.net fail.

Anomalator, Not having the blu-ray myself I cannot say for sure, but you may check and see if there are any firmware updates for your blu-ray player. These things seem to get updated with some regularity and I have had issues before playing discs that require an update. Or, it could be some other ghost in the machine. Either way, sorry to hear of your bad luck!

BluRay audio

Well, I went to Airshow Mastering's 30th Birthday party today and David Glasser told me that he was very happy to find that the BluRay audio exactly matched what he heard in his mastering lab (24/96) and how surprised he was to find out how much better it sounded than the DVD Dolby version. Buyer's remorse here, I think I'm going to have to get a BluRay version and a BluRay player. Or just pester him to listen to it in his studio! OK, I gotta find a Red Rocks ticket for tomorrow.

NO PROBLEM PLAYING BLU RAY EDITION

I have a Oppo BDP-103 and had no problems playing the movie or bonus. Sorry to hear that others are having problems.

Everything works fine for me!

Got the Blu-ray version on Friday and I was able to play the movie fine. It was on a PS3, so I don't know if that makes any difference. I actually don't buy a lot of Dead releases (I use Spotify/Archive.org for all my Dead listening) and I'm blown away by the quality of the HDCD of this show. My father doesn't like the Dead and I was 12 when Jerry passed away so it's releases like this that get me as close as possible to the experience of a Grateful Dead show.

No subwoofer channel in TrueHD mix on Blu-ray?

I've not yet seen anyone with his problem -- my receiver (a more than serviceable Sony) shows that the output from the BR disc is TrueHD, but nothing comes out of the subwoofer channel. The other five channels are fine. I ripped the disc to MKV, which converts TrueHD to DD 5.1, and I do get something then out of the subwoofer channel, but not a lot. (Note that the sub does work fine for other 5.1 discs/media, etc.) Can anyone confirm for me that they're getting something from their subwoofer channel? BTW, in case any one cares, I have a Sony STR-DH520 7.1 receiver and a Samsung BD-F5900 BR player.

Baffled & Bummed...

Sounds like the discs are great! Seems like everybody loves the movie too. Awesome. I wouldn't know 'cause my copy is still a no show. How is it that folks half-way around the planet earth have received their copys and a guy a couple of states away is still listening to the one old crappy copy he's been straining to hear over the last 20 yrs.? Bummed & Baffled....

UPC vs. sku # vs. Item #

So i just received my 4 copies of SSDD, 2 of the BluRay & 2 of the regular DVD from Dead.net. Nice looking boxes, but without any outside notes to determine which is which! I bought all 4 as gifts and can't figure out which ones to send to who. There are UPC stickers on the outside shrink wrap but they don't match up to the sku # on the website, nor do they match up with the Item # on my receipt. I called the 1-800 Customer Help and they actually told me that there is no way of knowing without opening them! I asked if someone higher up, warehouse supervisor etc might be able to help, but to no avail. I was told there is no other way to confirm which is which! Giving an opened box hardly makes for a proper gift giving methinks. Can anyone confirm the UPC codes from their boxes? The two i have are 081227965006 & 081227964993. I would be so grateful, and so would the old heads waitin' on these.

Sunshine Daydream

Just got mine in the mail today and I must say that I'm impressed with the packaging, It all looks very well done to me the 40 paged booklet provided nice insight to the making of the film and to the events surrounding the concert 41 years ago going to watch the film to night. I would love to thank everyone involved in the project (David Lemieux, Dead.Net, Rhino, The Film Crew and of course the Grateful Dead and whoever else is involved) on a job well done.

Blu-Ray Problems and Customer Service

Is anyone else having Blu-Ray playability problems and issues with customer service?

My Blu-Ray isn't working

So i got this a little over a month ago for my birthday and have listened to the disc set EXTENSIVELY. I finally got around to putting in the Blu-Ray disk and it says it's loading than than says play on the Blu-Ray player and than it just sits on 00:00. How do I get a copy of this that actually works without having to purchase a new one?

What has happened to Dead.net Customer Service?

Their customer service is not that great

I have the blu ray edition and have not attempted to play the video because I saw in theaters. I hope it works. Last time I called to place an order I told them their cust. service went down from the past and as I was telling the agent that I could hear other call center agents having a conversation in the background. It was not my agents fault, but the others around were very unprofessional. I work in a call center and the majority of the people I work with could not give two craps when a client calls in. And for holiday season most business have to rush around and hire people they normally would not due to the increase in business. That's a big problem because their is an increase in business, with a possibility of new customer service agents taking calls and they have no clue what to do. That can turn a lot of people off from future business.

Was sent the DVD not the Bluray

Check your Bluray and if it says DVD then they sent you the wrong set like they did me.

The continuing failure of customer service.

I just read over some of the problems folks are having with customer service. It's tragic that it has come to this. I have had my share of problems with them also. They are clueless when you call in with a concern. I have been told bad information many times. If you really have trouble send a PM to Marye the moderator, she has helped me. Hope things get better. Back in the day

Yes I was there, wet behind the ears and living on the kind streets of Portland.I remember sitting outside in the morning watching this guys bamboo bongs he had for sale when all of a sudden one of the guys I went to high school came up and said hi. What was funny was the last time I saw him he was a straight arrow small town dude but now he had turned on to the hip scene. I thought to my self yea I was right all along LOL. Oh and the heat, it was hot but the the tie-dye shade umbrellas were so cool. Memory fades but I remember seeing Kesey on stage with the band wearing red suspenders. I was also at the 82 party and couple of the other concerts like The New Riders of the Purple Sage. Then it switched to the U of O stadium. The Best shows were in Venita, Good times and not forgotten.

I am surprised that this limited edition has not sold out yet. It officially released on 17 September 2013, just over a year ago. Hmmm ...

Gotta echo the previous entry. I bought this for the Surround Blu-ray and love it! I played some for my kids the other day to demonstrate what it was like in the 70's. The cds sound really nice and the booklet is incredible. Some would say there is too much 70's Dead released, but this is one to own.

But they got that figured out, still scary. None the less not having Fair this year is a hard hit for everyone. And if you haven't heard they are preparing not to have Fair next year. Because you have to prepare to the worst case scenario. Look at the festival scene right now and tell me it's not scary. They could make it two years though and still come back. With no help. But don't let this conversation go by without input. Fair has always been there for us. And I'm prepared to do whatever to be there for Fair. I was stoked to see this, esspecially after they took down the video from YouTube. This has always made me feel "At Home", at home. This isn't the fucking Eagles or Michael Jackson. They wouldn't have lasted through this. I'm 26. I've been listening for less than a decade, soon we will be closer to a 100 year anniversary. I think we're all still trying to figure out "what it all means". Why does it keep going? Where, when will it end? Who knows. Who cares. But I know something was starting here! Only love. Prediction

A vaccine for C-19 will not be available until January 2022. Dead and Company will try to make up for lost time with both a spring 2022 tour and a summer 2022 tour. That will work out just exactly perfect for a two day gig on August 27 and 28 in Veneta, Oregon. The 27th will of course celebrate 50 years since the Creamery Picnic and the 28th will celebrate 40 years since the last time the Dead played on that hallowed ground.
This is complete conjecture not based in reality. But one can dream.
