"The Grateful Dead picked up their instruments and hit the first note with perfection. They never missed a note for the next three and one-half hours. People followed the flow of the tunes. Down on the floor in front of the stage was a sea of heads keeping time with the music. No one sat still. No one, except the youngsters behind us sat still. They were still and stunned." - The Power County Press

And what a stunner it was, that show at the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, ID on September 2, 1983. Dave's Picks Volume 27 contains every stitch of music from this mid-80s show (our first in this series), one that's as good as any other in Grateful Dead history. When the Dead were on, they were ON! Straight out the gate with a definitive take on the old standard "Wang Dang Doodle," the band swiftly switches back to a setlist of yore, firing off 70s staples like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" and wrapping things up with a terrific trio of "Big Railroad Blues"/"Looks Like Rain"/"Deal" (don't you let that epic guitar solo go down without you). Primed for the second set, they tackle the complexities of "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's" with heart and ease. It's clear there will be no stopping their flow - Bobby and Brent hanging in for a fantastic pre-Drums "Jam" and Jerry and Bobby in the zone on a not-to-be-missed melodic "Space." Not a skipper in the whole lot!

Dave's Picks Volume 27 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and it is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

One of the few times I was rendered utterly speechless by a musical performance (other than the Dead, of course!). 20 years ago, watching the 1998 Grammy show, Pavarotti was due to sing "Nessun Dorma," but he was ill and cancelled - after the show had already started! The producer scrambled to Aretha's dressing room to see if she could fill in that time slot with one of her songs, but she said she'd do the planned piece since the orchestra and choir had already rehearsed everything. Here's that amazing presentation: Chills!! R.I.P., Queen Aretha

when GD Veneta 92 got cancelled, I was bummed.when GD Tacoma and Portland 85 got cancelled, I was livid. when NY cancelled Tacoma 83, I was disappointed. when Iggy Pop no-showed as opener for the Pretenders (87? 88?), I was annoyed. Cancellations suck

....no matter what band was playing. Lots of work went into it. For naught. I only caught one Phish festival. Festival 8 in Indio, California. Whether you were a phan or not, one had to appreciate all the work they put into them. So much to do. So much to investigate if one was glassy-eyed. I had a blast. I swear they even had air fresheners in the port-a-lets. So many bummed people. I feel for them. Can you imagine getting the news while on a plane en-route? You wanna talk about WTF's? Walking off that plane with all your camping gear in tow with not campsite to stake. And that's just the peeps flying in. How about driving from hundreds of miles away, only to turn around in Columbus looking for a motel and feeling the seven steps of emotion hit you full force. Life's a bitch sometimes.

well it sounds like 83 to me, but seriously i found it very entertaining for a few listens and i'll be going back to it for sure, its second set is actually very similar to my second show hampton 83 with its helpslipfrank, throwin stones, GDTRFB and black peter although my favorite eras are during the single drummer years i have been enjoying a lot of later stuff recently, i did not get boxilla, but my coworker started getting 30 trips shows on ebay, at first he planned on stopping at 1975 but guess what he got them all, i have had chance to make mp3s of all of them more or less in chronological order, except 87 and 88 and they're forthcoming, i really enjoyed the brent shows, cincinatti 85 is the only 30 trips show i attended, and i have been kinda blown away by the vince (and bruce) shows, previously i had spent very little time listening to vince shows, they have some very different jams than i am used to, and vince played more piano sounds than i expected after bruce left, of course all this latter day lsitening will make the PNW shows all the more awesome im sure

Not a Phish fanatic, but I can't imagine the "WTF" of the cancellation. Imagine going to Watkins Glen in 73, being totally "psyched" and "ready" (wink wink), and then being told "never mind". ouch. a major event in Phish pholklore, I'm sure. sorry, y'all Phishers. I sympathize. there _are_ worse fates. I just got done reading a book about the American Revolution. Being part of that would have been a triple bummer. or even a whole new category of "bummer." when Veneta 92 got cancelled in 92, I recall that people showed anyway and had a party. well, onward. here's to everyone having a glorious day today, and weekend.

Hey Dogon, I had also seen about this (from SpinCDs). This is great news. I have the original LP from 1969 and also the Sundazed CD reissue from 1999 that has 10 extra tracks (5 from the Sony Music Special Products CD reissue from 1991 and 5 new to this Sundazed release). Now additionally we will get almost two hours of previously unheard music from the man. Indeed potentially the reissue of the year. Release date: September 28. I will polish my fire axe in anticipation!

NO it will never end! (brahahahahaha (or however you spell an evil laugh)) I have the original Nimoy album (on the Dot label) from way back when. Never knew there was a video. I laughed at one point. (ok many) But Shatner did a book once about how star trek started everything and there was Nimoy spinning a cd on his finger!!! In 68, OMG, the Enterprise really could go back in time. Thanks for a good chuckle. BTW - Nimoy's album wasn't that bad, I'll still play it about once a year :-)

I've never actually heard Oar!!, although I have been aware of its reputation for years. Maybe now is the time to check it out. I noticed you mentioned Sun Ra in a recent post, though. I have just got back from London having seen the Sun Ra Arkestra as directed by Marshall Allen-apparently now 94 years old. The concert took place in a beautiful old church, and the music was exceptional, including many Arkestra themes as well as free jazz and full blown swing. From the future to the past and back again. I picked up a few cds, too, including the digitally remastered "My Brother The Wind" from 1969 which, as you probably know features Sun Ra's early experiments with the mini moog. This version also features some extra tracks, including the 17 minute synthesizer solo known as "Space Probe" from 1970. Very far out!

I'm not holding much hope for the Credence tape though.. Perhaps if they had used bear acid in that video we wouldn't have had to suffer through Kenny Rogers the country pop star for the last 45 years, but I digress.

This was a part of a collection called "Grateful Dead Records Collection" issued for Record Store Day 2017. The box was a 7500 unit run of 180g vinyl. Included were the albums: Mars Hotel, Wake Of The Flood, & Blues For Allah. I've always parodied the Steal Your Face album title as * Steal Your Money; * Steal Your Underwear. * Steal Your Jams; * Steal Your Car. SYF is not one of my favorites.

I actually like some of Steal Your Face, especially the version of Mississippi. I always thought that one, and the Promised Land, sounded great. Those were some of the first versions of those songs I ever heard. Legend has it that Lester Bangs wrote the "steal your money" comment in his review, but many Deadheads have called it Steal Your Money since back in the day when it was a new release! Just a reminder that it's not unusual for some of us to be unhappy with the quality of an official release. And it's funny: If you listen to SYF back to back with this latest Dave's Pick, you'll note a surprising lack of blown lyrics or off-key notes on SYF. Yes, they certainly did things differently in the old days. Skip Spence was also a member of Jefferson Airplane and Buffalo Springfield. If you just can't get enough of the Oar tunes, check out the very weird tribute album, which features everyone from Robert Plant and Tom Waits to Jay Farrar, Beck, and Robyn Hitchcock: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_Oar:_A_Tribute_to_the_Skip_Spence_Al…

You know of course that kenny Rogers had a brother, Leyland Rogers who owned the International Artists record label in Texas, home of the 13 Floor Elevators, Red Crayola, Golden Dawn, Bupple Puppy et al.Since the Elevators and Rocky Eriksson played the SF ballrooms, is it idle to speculate that mr K Rogers might indeed have been aware of Bear and his products?

SYF is a guilty pleasure for me. I'm fully aware of how bad the recording is, yet I can't turn away. Sort of like "Monkey Bone" when it's on TV. Can't. Turn. Away.
