Days Of Dead

"Comes A Time"
Hint:
A song that first appeared in 1971 and came and went from the repertoire. It was rare enough that it was always a newsworthy song when the Dead played it right up to its final performance in 1994

Cleveland, OH, Cleveland Public Auditorium
"Comes A Time" appeared in 1971, was played in 1972, and then disappeared until 1976. It showed up occasionally for the next decade, but from 1987 to 1994, it was played only seven times.

Welcome all newcomers! But no, please don’t post your guess in the Comments section! First off, this will not enter you in the contest. And 2nd, it’s just not done old chap!

The fun of this wild treasure hunt is to sleuth out your best guess. Sometimes Commenters give some pretty fun & clever & veiled hints as to what the answer might be. And that’s part of the fun! But we never post our guesses here in the Comments.

The ONLY way you can enter your guess is to find the drop down menu for "Show," and the drop down menu for "Show Date." AND be sure to click on Submit My Entry after you make your choices. I will admit it was a bit glitchy for me to find the spot to enter today, but once on the the main 30 DoD page—the one with the artwork on top—it should show the song title for that day, e.g., “Comes A Time.” I think I had to scroll down below the Comments to find the entry option. I can’t say for sure cuz once you make your entry, that info disappears and it says “THANKS FOR ENTERING TODAY!”
Just poke around & you’ll find it!! Have fun!

….And btw, re today’s selection, note that those show/venue options do sometimes throw you a curve ball!!

Are we going to get this 192kbps file upped to 320kbps? Don't mean to sniff at the offered dinner, but come on, now.

This is fun. I definitely honed in on a particular year, but as we know they melt into a dream. I often listen to shows on my thumbdrive and channel 23 guessing years without seeing the show. When Im off by more than a year, I shamelessly figure out where I went wrong. The most difficult years are 82-84. Probably because those years arent on the top of my list. Good luck everyone! Thanks DL for coordinating.

My Brothers and Sisters, I want you to know that I am just guessing. At this point, I am not sure what day today is, let alone something from the past. I am just here to keep my set of these going. Gods, I love this.

Exactly.......DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN THIS COMMENTS SECTION!! It ain't that hard to figure out how to submit your answer. Basically, stay on the pipe while determining your guess, and if you want to give small, cryptical hints, that's cool too. Just stay off the pipe before commenting. Personally, I prefer no hints. Also, you're not going to get a complete jam or performance. You will get the song for that day with hopefully a way to figure out what lead up to or out of that tune to narrow your search. The hunt is the fun part because you get the chance to explore lots of options.

Aiko Aiko, to the Usual Suspects, to the friends up front with eyeballs bulging, to the friends in the halls twirling, and to those checking your UV meters with your pen lights during the unexpected break out tune. The VW Microbus reeks of patchouli, pretty bracelets and grilled cheese in the lot, buddy got his Miracle ticket, and Sweet Jane's found her sparkle again. The lights are going down as the band is about to take the stage, with great excitement and anticipation, what are they gonna play next?

Tricky! I had this show on tape, but not of good quality. This should have been my 1st show, but we showed up at the wrong venue and my friend wasn’t willing to trek 25 more miles into the city. I ended up seeing my 1st show, 6 1/2 months later in the same “structure.” I LOVE 30 Days Of The Dead and my coworkers can’t believe it’s November already. The month I turn them onto many versions of 30(or so) Grateful Dead songs.

I am not seeing a place other than "add a new comment" where one could submit a guess which I see other people have done but is not wanted. I wanted to submit my guess too but others have already answered my guess. I am using Chrome on a Macbook.

The submit button and associated venue and date drop down menus are below the comments. Once you submit, they disappear and are replaced by the message "Thanks for entering today!"

I started going to shows in the 70s, but for some reason I never saw them play this. Then in 1985 I saw them do it twice in the space of a couple of months in Ventura and Chula Vista.

The sound of Jerry's voice and the keyboards give me the year, and I can hear hints of the song to follow toward the end. Not saying more than that. Except that this is a lovely, lovely version. Thank you Dead!

At least I hope this helps! The pages on this site can be confusing.

To submit a guess/an entry, I think you need to be on the main 30DoD page. I’m not allowed to type that info here, but it’s the main GD site for 30 DoD. It will have the artwork on top, then the song, then “Post Comments Here”, then comments, THEN below comments should be where you can enter.

If you were on that main page and clicked on the highlighted song name, it takes you to a different page that does not have option to submit entry. This page does not have artwork on top. It just has the name of the song at the top and then down below comments it only gives you the option to “Add New Comments.”

I danced with Mom to this song for my wedding. Seems spiritual to me like you are about to give up and something divine happens and you find love. Made me think of all the conversations I had with my Mom. The solo is ethereal and transcendent. This is a wonderful version.

I have a good guess, and submitted it. Won't say here.

Do they confirm the venue and date the next day, or so? Maybe when they post the next day's song?

Yes you are correct in that if everything is working xactly purfect, then tomorrow when you check-in, you'll see today's correct answer and the lucky Head who picked correctly and was randomly picked out of any/all of those who entered the correct answer for today.

Hope that provides some clarity. And good luck!

yes, it's dangerous to post answers, especially when they are wrong. i've done this for years, and even won once, and usually get between 28 to 30 right, and the wrong ones are usually from two categories: ones from rehearsals, and ones from answers i get in the comments...as others have said here better than I, the fun is the hunt...

In all these years, this is only the second time I've gotten it on the first guess, (except for a few medleys that only had a couple of possibilities). I really love this version. Now I'll check out the whole show.

As others have mentioned in earlier post be kind and don’t give away the date. Clues that are not obvious are welcomed. Here is how I go about researching. First, download and listen. Chat with good friend about what era we think the song is from. Break out Deadbase for every time played and set list. Deadlist for set list and if I can identify song before or after Deadlist provides easy way to query song pairings. Then use archive to compare versions . What is your process? Happy hunting brothers and sisters!

So glad to be back playin again.
Gotta make it somehow.
