Please cite the source or post the link to the Chicago Tribune article you reference that says “the cops are going to be descending on the area like an iron hammer”. The only thing I can find is one where the Soldier Field spokesperson says “We’ll be upping security numbers with Chicago Police and Fire (Department) from a traffic management standpoint”, which I think is great and expected. Thanks......

I haven't seen any Trib article saying that. But Chicago IS a police state. The cops are brutal and with long history of things like torturing false confessions for death row convictions. They have "black sites" where they take and hold people for hours, sometimes days, without any rights. They're basically disappeared. (Black site revelations have been in the local and national media for past two weeks.) Just sayin'.

For the most part, cops in Chicago are pretty cool, and I seriously doubt they are looking to bust people for minor drug offenses. Be stupid, and guess what, you deserve to go to jail. Be mellow, party in the lot, don't act like a clown, and they will leave you alone. I've been to every single Dead show in Chicago since 1979, that includes every Uptown show, UIC, and all the Soldier Field shows. Heck, even the Rosemont cops were cool to heads and I saw every show there too, including the 81 show. Again, act like a dick, and get what you deserve, but if anyone remembers the last few years, Soldier Field was a HUGE party, there was even a nitrous lot, and cops really didn't care. I doubt if the Dead would pick Chicago if they thought it was just going to be a trap for drug arrests. As for hotel rooms, if everything downtown or River North is sold out, try Evanston. It is a great town, with two trains going near the shows. Plus great beaches, good mom and pop restaurants, and extremely liberal. Let's start thinking about POSITIVE things. Negative energy ain't gonna bring you tickets or a good time. Chicago welcomes Lollapalooza every single year, and the cops are totally cool. They deal with concert goers on a weekly bases, you think a bunch of hippies is going to phase them?

I'm from Chicago as well, been to all the Soldier Field shows, etc. and echo your thoughts. The Chicago Police are cool to you as long as you are cool! You will not be busted for carrying very small amounts with you if that is all you are doing. Actually the CPD loves Dead shows - they have a good time with the crowd and just let us be because we're not hurting anyone. There will be dancin' in the streets of Chicago - come and have fun! After all, it's not a Democratic National Convention haha - those days are long gone. And at all times - Be Kind

Actual quote from the Tribune article... "As it was, we had a larger than normal allocation for the fan base based on the history of the band with the venue. I can’t go into details, but it was more than the usual 10 percent allotment for the fan base (requesting via mail order). Significantly more.” But hey, certain whiners going to whine and haters are going to hate no matter what the final allotment, etc. Regardless, an extremely small percentage of tickets are available on the aftermarket. No one was cheated by Ticketmaster, Bears fans, etc. It was just a huge demand for one of the greatest bands in American rock history. For those complaining about a tour or more shows, they don't owe any of us anything. Period. Stop acting like entitled brats. It's moronic to say that "everyone" is going to end up in jail. There will be an insanely small percentage of people who get arrested. Even though laws regarding ganja are extremely more relaxed than 20 years ago, there will still some people that make mistakes. Sure, it hurts we all didn't get tickets, but there is still hope. It's going to be an awesome weekend in Chicago. Party time. whoop whoop

I agree...Long Shot. The whole thing is just very disappointing. The Dead started all this nonsense with the big COUNTDOWN last year...Then just 3 shows. I never understood it even before all the problems. How will 3 SHOWS fill the demand? I have been very negative on the thread but 3 SHOWS? I have been going since 77, seen all the variations of the bands and at 300 plus shows I just wanted to go 1 more time and then put it away....in my opinion they tarnished their legacy...After 50 years of working in the music industry they knew/know exactly what they are doing.

Look, Lollapalooza is a three day event that brings tens of thousands more concert goers than Soldier Field could fit, and guess what, the cops are pretty cool, and drug arrests are scarce. Thanks for echoing my sentiments "TheDoctor" because all this negative stuff about Chicago is just crazy.Yes, there is some crazy crap that goes on here, I won't deny that, but no one is going to bring deadheads, especially out of town heads, into the torture rooms. Are you coming in from Iraq? No, you are just drinking beer, smoking weed, sucking balloons, swallowing tabs (are they still even around?) doing X or eating 'shrooms. IF YOU AREN'T KILLING ANYONE YOU'LL BE OK. My pick for July Fourth Set I One More Saturday Night Jack straw Walking Blues Good Morning Little School Girl (Buddy Guy on vocals) Spoonful Passenger Althea Cassady Birdsong China Cat>Rider Set II Shakedown Street Uncle John's Band Dark Star Verse one Playing In The Band D/S Dark Star Second Verse The Other One So Many Roads Throwing Stones NFA Encore Cosmic Charlie

In what dimension does significantly more than the usual 10% equal 66.67%? Neither you nor I know how many tickets went where, so trying to pass it off as a fact is reckless at best.

I agree Frontrow Joe. It's going to be just fine. I've been to Lolla in Chicago several times and Pitchfork. No cop hassles whatsoever. Sure there will be some busts, but I'm not going so I can buy or sell drugs. I'll come equipped with whatever I need. I like the setlist. However, I think Jackstraw will open Friday, or Touch. I have lived in Chicago 50+ years and been to hundreds of concerts here including several Dead shows, Pink Floyd at Soldier field and Grant park Lollapalooza, To name a few. I see so much bitchin about police here and gotta say CHILL OUT! I guarantee your going to see cops and in big numbers, I can also guarantee that if you walk by a cop smoking a fatty and smile your going to get a smile back. This is not 1968 and its not a police state by any means. We have real good public transpo ,L trains and busses, Metra from the burbs. we have thousands of bike rentals called Divy and you will see that Chicago at night has one of the most beautiful skylines in the world! This being the 4th of July we have our fireworks display that night, and that averages about a Million people each year so be ready for a very crowded lakefront that weekend, Our mayor Rahm Emanuel is a fan of the Dead and probably will try to open up the south parking lot to camping. I would not be surprised if they open up Grant park with viewing screens. Anyway Hope everyone enjoys our great city, and these epic shows and in a way we should all be proud of this big ass mess we have created and knowing we are still out there in big numbers. and of course may the four winds blow you safely home! I'm still waiting on my mailorder no email no letter no MO cashed totally in limbo Friday opening tune. side one, cut one, Golden road of course

Hey old lifer-I'm an old lifer too! and saw a number of shows on the Spring 77 tour including the infamous Cornell show. Couldn't agree more about your last comments "hope you all get what you want, but remember, the scene only survived as long as it did because we put more into it than money. For this run to work well, the same holds true, because ‘without love in a dream it will never come true.’ Peace To All."Though there were times in the mid to late 80's and 90's where it seemed like the money might have been gaining the upper hand. There were also many who thought Bill Graham was more about the money than true deadhead ideals. I am not in that camp and I am also not in the bash Shappy camp ( I am very happy with the experience he is providing at the CAP and think he will come through with something first class for all the heads without tix same as Bill Graham always did). Though this seems to be a real money shit show at times (Bears fans getting tix over the heads?) it is how we live now. The concert scene was long ago bought and sold. I lived in the oregon during the 70's hippie era and I would give anything to have that vibe back but it's mostly gone, worn down by the relentless commercialization of everything. Although it has been more disorganized than I had hoped-I am extremely grateful for the GDTS TOO option. our group of heads mostly struck out but we were lucky and did get a handful of tix through mail order. Some of us will be in and some out but we will all be there with our family and I know the love will be strong. I do have to disagree with your comment about the music. Of course the band with Jerry (some would say Pigpen) was the real deal and it is pointless to argue differently, but the music continues at a high level. I have seen every incarnation since, the Other Ones, the Dead, Further, Phil's many friends, Ratdog, Mickey's Bands, Seven Walkers, DSO even most recently JRAD and the music and the spirit is still strong and it will be reaching another peak in Chicago. Saw Trey with Phil and Joan several times and I know he will bring it big time. I am in for the last two nights and wouldn't miss it for the world. Hope you can find a way to join in.

Yes, it finally happened!!I got people talking about set lists instead of stupid TicketBastard, or how GDTS TOO handled the process! Here are a few rare songs I'd love to hear. China Doll (Yeah, I know it's slow, somewhat whiney Jerry, but I love it) Dire Wolf (First set country slot followed by Big River) Cumberland (Everybody gets a verse) Maggie's Farm (Saw this at Pine Knob with Bruce, excellent) The Eleven ( I know this song is hard for anyone to play, but man, I never saw one) Cosmic Charlie>Mister Charlie(I know it's a stretch) Chinatown Shuffle (Gimme some Pig!!) Two Souls In Communion(See above) World To Give(Great lyrics, not great song...but still) Lazy Lightning>Supplication(Why Bobby gave this KILLER combo up is beyond me) Lost Sailor>Saint(Speaking of killer Bobby combos) Easy Wind(Can't get enough of Pig) Maybe You Know(I have no idea who would sing this, but man, they need to tip their hat to Brent somehow) Might As Well( Great song, sure a bit repetitive towards the end, but a rocker none-the-less) Unbroken Chain(I saw every time they played it live. Who says '95 sucked?) Cryptical(With the Other One of course) Feel free to add. See isn't this more fun than bitching about tickets?

Here is the Trib article on recent police responses to the shows. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-grateful-dead-soldier-f… The article also references the petition drive by Heads asking the city to allow for overnight venue parking. Here's the link to the petition. It's a good idea and the city has allowed it in the past, so maybe they can be convinced to change the current plan. https://www.change.org/p/soldier-field-parking-standard-parking-please-…

Frontrow Joe,I've seen every live Unbroken Chain as well. It was a big tour, but we have probably crossed paths even if we don't know it. 1995 was not the best, but I wouldn't give it up for anything. Yeah, you have some rarities on that list. It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do with these three shows. Phil is currently playing set lists of years past (started with 1965) at Crossroads. Are they going to pull out some really old tricks and mix things up, or will they go with a pretty standard late dead set list? Hard to say. Will there be guests like Donna, Branford, or Dylan? Not sure. Will they do some type of video tribute to Jerry before, during, or after a show? So many questions. I kind of hope they just play what I'd call "Standard Greatest Hits Setlist." In other words, they may play some songs rarely played in the later years like Ripple and St. Stephen, but keep to a standard set list format. As far as guests, I really don't care as long as it doesn't interrupt the flow of a standard show. I've seen Dylan a lot, and a more than of those times he's sucked. Hopefully, they give us a little bit of a heads up as to their intentions without giving away a few surprises.

This is probably nit-picking but the lyric from Brokedown Palace is not "Fare thee well." It is "Fare you well." I'll go out on a limb and predict Brokedown Palace for the encore for the final night.

So now that camping is off the table - come on you guys, I have an amazing king suite booked in downtown Chicago from 7/2 thru 7/4 in exchange for 2 tickets for 7/3. We all need some place to crash, right? I just need two tickets, and I refuse to go "outside" this site to score tickets. Feel free to email me directly at anita@verbatimdata.com. We'll be in Chicago despite being ticketless (at the moment at least). Love and live by the music and the boys. Love the people and this community so much more. We can all attend the spinoff shows down the road and we can listen to this amazing music forever more, but we'll all never be together again, like it used to be. What a lovely ride it's been.

Joe, I think a lot of your picks are automatic, except maybe the Pigpen tunes. Phil has been killing Unbroken Chain during every Friends stand. Cryptical, Lazy Lightning, The Eleven, definitely. I too would like to hear Sailor/Saint. I just missed the Dead playing it (first show in '86). Saw Furthur play it at Northerly Island but couldn't hear it due to the sorority girls behind me screaming in my ear the whole damn show. It'll be fun to see how many of the oldies Furthur and Phil broke out will be included--Born Cross-eyed, Mason's Children, Mountains of the Moon, etc. Mission in the Rain would be nice. How about a couple of Jerry solo tunes--Reuben & Cherise, or Run for the Roses? Depends how much energy they want to put into it. I wouldn't bet on a lot of surprises--too much practice time required to play stuff that Bob and Phil don't already have down. Final encore should be We Bid You Good Night > Box of Rain. Or vice-versa. Have you ever heard Phil talk about calling for Box of Rain following the original encore (Black Muddy River) on 7/9/95? He talked wanting to end that god-awful tour on a positive note, and wondering whether it would ever happen again. So, there you go. Unfortunately, I almost certainly won't be "seeing" any of it (still in limbo), but I'll be somewhere in Chicago in front of a video screen. After spending the day walking around with my finger in the air, that is.

I'm resigned to not going. REALLY disappointed the #s didn't work for me; somewhere between irritated and pissed with the lack of preparation and communication from GDTSTOO; the scalpers don't really bother me; please don't chastise the band for "no tour"...they may not have the energy or health to do it anymore on that scale; I'm not going to predict what Jerry would do, think, react to all this, should he be aware of all this. The last any of us have heard from JG was 20 years ago!!! I have changed a few cognitions and opinions in the 20 years, and suspect he may have too.I personally only caught GD 18 or 20 times 76 thru 95 but caught a decent sampling of all "eras" during that time. Dead, furthur, ratdog another 10 or 15 times...and was looking for the exclamation point at the end of the story. Hopefully the simulcast idea will come to fruition. I wish all the best for you have tix. Anyway...they HAVE to play "The Music Never Stopped"...right?! I would open with that, night 1...I know it is not a traditional opener but maybe this trio of shows will shake things up? Do they dare "Stella"? it would be bittersweet. one of my fondest memories...the rain set in Pittsburgh 6/30/95. The show overall was average; JG was struggling; but the timing with the rain starting just as set 2 started, or vice versa, was really cool. Were they really that in sync with the WEATHER? Another one...my wife and I moved to L.A. area in 1980. our first night in L.A. we caught the Dead at Pauley Pavillion...perfect way to start my California era. Really fine show, too. Saddest memory is from Riverport 7/6/95...I distinctly recall thinking I could never see them again...did not predict anyone's death...it's just the low energy from the band, coupled with the song selection seemed to create a voice in my head saying "This Will be the Last Time", "He's (they're) Gone". only unbroken chain I ever heard live...which was cool for me. I have very vivid memories of most shows even the few where i got myself severely over-served; I've got some killer concert DVDs and tons of downloads; and the $5 to $6k I would have dropped getting to the shows. Guess things could be worse. Still have the beautiful wife who went to California with me, too. SCHA- WING!!!

Yes that's right you can be in the pit for only 1250 when the face is 99.50 (12x increase) We all know they are pit GA the only 99.50 price level (some real lucky deadheads got these) These tix with ridiculous prices are selling folks. Hey Now jbhiker! Thanks for your kind words. As to the 'new' band iterations, I'm afraid they are just not clicking with me. I keep trying, but to no avail. Different frequency, I guess. After decades of chasing tickets, I've decided that this time, the tickets have to chase me. If some 'miracles' fall out of the sky, I'll go. If not, the Mrs. and me will be tucked away on a (hopefully) sunny bay aboard our little cabin cruiser, either watching the pay-per-view I anticipate will be coming or listening to the '77 run blasting out the deck speakers. So, maybe we will see you at the show! If not, we will be there in spirit.

For what it's worth I got Mail Order Filled a while back and I only requested 2 reserved for all 3 nights @ $95.50. The Ga pit was originally priced at $115.50, and Premium Reserved @ $215.50 (Fortunately I printed out the original Pricing as I know it's been all over the map since it was first posted). Then there were,..again originally($59.50, $76.50, $119.50, and $199.50) price levels to be available at "Other Outlets" after Mail Order was done. I don't know how that guy on E-Bay got $99.50 GA PIT, however my question is where might I be sitting with my $95.50 Reserved seats,....I did include extra money orders for each ticket to take me to the GA Pit price level of $115.50, because The GDTS instructions said to include all price level money orders to insure a better chance of getting tickets and that's all the money I had to spare. I couldn't shoot for the $215.50 price range, so I didn't. So To Reiterate,...being that they merely confirm your order will be filled, Where the heck am I going to be sitting??? Any Ideas? Thanks for any and all help you can lend in the matter.

Hey Slam4, why stop at 65 - I personally know several heads who will be there who are well past 65, not to mention band members. I myself will turn 65 on July 4th. I hope there are three or four generations represented because the music and love needs to continue way after most of us are gone and the only way that's going to happen is through younger heads. I think it will be delightful to see such a mixed crowd - I can't wait.

Sorry for the delay, I am working on my house and checking forum when possible. Not sure where the $95.50 reserved tix may land us. I was hoping for some insight from some kind soul with a bit more info than myself on this site, It seems (for the most part) to be filled with genuinely helpful, positive minded people, so maybe someone out there has an answer for us. I plan to check my Money orders later to see what was cashed, because as I stated before, I also included extra MO's for price difference for GA PIT, but I really need a seat due to a severe back injury I sustained 25 years ago which landed me in pain management now that I'm an old man (45)Lol. If all of my MO's were cashed I can safely assume I will be in the GA Pit area, however if I did indeed get the $95.50 tix I am at a loss for any "Furthur" information. Sorry I can't answer your question with any degree of certainty. If you find out anything, can you PM me or post it for everyone's benefit. I will do the same. Thanks. Maybe we can grab a beer in Chicago.

After we have beaten this ticket thing like a dead horse mangled over and over and over, it is VERY encouraging to the see the spirit of the Deadheads rise again to celebrate what it truly is about - THE MUSIC. Love the commentary on what the scene was like decades ago. Hearing old stories from older Deadheads is one of the best things about being a deadhead (I was only able to catch the 90s Dead, bring in High School at the time.) Setlist Talk!!!! Love that. Encouraging peaceful ways in the lot and in the city - So great to see people articulating the spirit of the Deadheads, and how peace and love really are at the center of our universe. I listened to the first Soldier Field show of GD yesterday from 1992, with Hornsby on keys, and during the Wang Dang Doodle I was like, "WOW - Never heard it like that before" (one of the countless, never-ending ways the Dead seem to amaze us over and over). I never really payed much attention to the tune. But somebody on here mentioned that Buddy Guy coming out for that would be cool. Hey, great idea. Hornsby killed a version of it in 1992. Keep knocking that beach ball around folks! Cause the audience is as much a part of the band as anyone...

ATTN! Grateful Dead Scalpers -Soldier Field!!!!Hi. It's us.... AGAIN. Yep. You're still at it, trying to sell tickets you don't have yet to a show you have no interest in. You guys think you've hit the jackpot. Nope. Instead, you've kicked a hornet's nest!!! Well, here's what you don't know. Much like Anonymous, we are everywhere. And we are legion. Who are we? We're former presidents, international heads of state, current US senators, political pundits, doctors, lawyers and Ph. D's. So, we're smart. We're willing to listen to 15 minute drum duets and talk endlessly about the tiny nuances in 30 minute Dark Stars. So, we're patient. We're a group that, in a lot of cases, followed a band around the country, selling delicious burritos, lovingly made grilled cheeses, handmade clothes, all searching for fleeting cosmic connections with a band night after night. So, we're both industrious and persistent. And, above all, by far and wide, we consider each other family. We look out for each other. Which means when you try to screw us, we'll get the word out. And remember, we're everywhere. That post I made yesterday...it went viral. It went to places I'd never heard of, posted by people that I've never met, commented on by people that don't know me from Adam. All of them saying the same thing: We like this guy's style. We're going to do what this guy's doing. And that brings me back to you, Mr. Scalper. We're smarter than you. We're more patient than you. We're more persistent than you, too. We will flag every post that you make where you ask for sums of money that could pay for a used Mercedes Benz. We will flag every post where you tell us that lowball offers (meaning, face value) aren't accepted. We will flag every broker, every season ticket holder who had dollar signs in their eyes instead of kindness in their hearts and everyone that just wanted to make a quick buck off of the most passionate and loyal fan base on the planet. But we're not stopping at Craigslist anymore. People have gotten wise to the fact that you can't sell tickets without holding physical product on eBay. So all of those auctions are getting flagged. And we'll figure out a way to stop you on StubHub too. If you think you're going to shut us out, think again. We'll throw parties at our houses and pop for the pay per view. We'll hang around outside of soldier field (where the sound is actually pretty good) and hang with family instead of corporate VP's trying to catch a part of history while half mumbling the lyrics they remember to Truckin'. We'll let you eat those tickets that you thought you were going to make 1000% profit on. Sure, there are a few deadheads that have done well in life that can afford four figures for tickets, and they'll pay for GA Pit tickets. But after a few days of low hanging fruit, the vast majority of you are going to be left holding on to tickets that you were planning on selling for 10 or 20x face value. And you'll keep holding onto them. And keep holding onto to them. Until you realize that 90% of us won't pay a dime more than face. As I've said before, the price on the ticket is that price for a reason, and it's not negotiable. You clearly weren't banking on a united front. But that's what you've got. You can be smart and sell your tickets for a reasonable price (meaning, face value, or a little more for your time if you must), or you can keep thinking you hit the jackpot. But, as we've already discussed, that's not the case. We're going to keep flagging you until we break you. So, you keep telling me about Forbes articles, offers commensurate with current Stub Hub prices and how it's worth $7500 to make sure I don't miss out on the "concert of the century." I'll keep flagging away. WE'LL keep flagging away. Because we're Deadheads, and we're everywhere. And don't you forget it.

Wave That Flag dude! Nice post and soooo true. And I'm glad I'm part of this tribe too. Keep this going - WE rock and at 58 I'm still proud to have DeadHead stickers, SYF's and lightning bolts on my car groovin' to Channel 23. Peace...
