A Night with a Band Beyond Description.....As EPIC as a modern day Grateful Dead show got IMHO. Set I - Song selections and versions all outstanding Set II - well....kinda speaks for itself...and its really the Attics that puts it over the top. Along with the version of Playin>UJB>Playin and that old weird song called Dark Star?? Heard it was played alot in 69-74 Or something like that.... Cheers! JG “The Omnipotent Grateful Dead!”

...was at this show with my buddy, George "Ludeman" Moehler!!!This stands out as the finest of all that I ever attended especially Dark Star (the crowd roar during the opening notes was deafening), DDHNM, MR. F, Hey Jude and an Attics encore!!!!!!!!! I still have a photo floating around somewhere of the marquee stating "formerly billed as 'The Warlocks!'. I'll try to dig it up and post it. I contacted Dick when Dick's Picks first came out to recommend this show but... ...clams unleashed!

Biggest group hug in the world on the second level. All I could say for about a week was "They played Dark Star, They Played Dark Star...".

well....one of my favorite shows and I think the only one that I was completely straight. What makes it even more perfect was that I had an extra ticket that night and walked around the whole scene pre show trying to give the thing away and could find no takers.....everyone had tickets and i couldn't even give the ticket away for free!!! Everyone got in that night who wanted to. Pretty awesome night with a lot of happy people afterwards.

another show while in the United States Navy, so needless to say, not in the same "experience", never the less outfuckingstanding. Brent was freaking on, i remember it seemed like Bobby, Jerry, and Brent were competing on topping each other vocaly. truely wonderful show. stumbled on tickets just days before show, not widley advertised, and listed as "Warlocks" it was fate that got me there.

....shows of the last 5 years. I was at the Greek in 84' for the Dark Star there but still it was spine tingling from the first notes. The Death Don't was ridiculous. Jerry just shreds it. Attics was one of my all time big bustouts. So much fun. Dougles

Found extra ticket, tried to give ticket away, everyone had ticket. Finally found youngster who took the ticket...we told them it was going to be special night. It was. Came out of show, everyone very quiet. Very Quiet....friend of mine threw his arms up like ref at football game signaling a touch down and yelled "WE WON", everyone cheered!!!!! Then it was quiet again....mind blowing night!!!! Special. Years later, at shoreline, in parking lot before a JGB show, had this tape playing in car and someone came up and said "thats hampton, warlocks...right?" Right, Special.Lake

....and there was NOTHING on the east coast quite like a Hampton concert. Just a wonderful, general admission venue. I still get chills when I put on the tape and hear that crowd roar go up at the first notes of Dark Star. As good as it sounds on the old tape, in person it was just amazing.

I think the other posts really capture the magic of the night and I will add some of my memories too! You could tell something was a stirring from the "Stranger" when Brent starts singing, "Gonna be a long long crazy crazy tour!" The "crazy nights" lyrics were really being emphasized and that set the tone for the whole powerfully played 1st set. In Set 2, the Playin > UJ > Playin was so thick and psychedelic it was like I was listening to the Dead from another era. The sound and vibe had changed and you simply felt something was coming - it was in the air, and it sure did! DARK STAR sent everyone into a frenzy! I was dancing in the hallways at the end of the Playin Reprise when the Dark Star notes came. The crow cheered so loud and the energy exploded so hugely, I saw people experience every emotion imaginable. People jumping up and down, screaming, hugging, crying, falling down in a frenzy to get to their seats (or inside the arena) and lots of food workers and security scared to death because they did not know what the hell was happening. They just felt that explosion of energy and saw everyone freak out. It was absolutely incredible and during the spaciness of the Dark Star I think it was the loudest I've ever heard the Dead play. They were just getting weird and loud! The "Death Don't" was simply sacred and the "Attics" was the most special moment of live music I've ever had, anywhere, ever! All I could see everywhere I looked was people arms in arms singing and crying. My highlight was when the lights came up. There was about a few seconds of stupor and then the crowd gave the loudest and longest most spine tingling cheer I've ever heard (even louder than the Dark Star itself) as a recognition of the amazing and historic event we had just experienced! We had friends in Hampton who heard about the show and got tickets without telling us. We got the call for The Warlocks, and knew it was going to be a very special night! I still wonder what made them pick that night and that venue. Hampton shows really were always pretty special for me!

The vibe was amazing. Tickets were everywhere and everyone was ready for a treat. We all knew it was going to be special. I was on Phil's side on the floor with many friends. We (the crowd) ebbed and flowed together.Became one. The band was tight. After the show everyone was running around screaming and hugging. No other show comes close to this overall experience for me.

The Feel Like A stranger was hot, with Brent singing "gonna be a long, long, crazy, crazy TOUR." I have a pic I have to find- we were in the front row, basically, and I snapped a pic of Jerry during the opening notes of Dark Star, with the lights low and these multiple narrow spotlights coming down on him from above. I still get chills through my spine when I hear this Dark Star. The band was in really fine form for these shows. When I saw Jerry come out with the Wolf guitar the first night, combined with the fact that they were playing as The Warlocks, I just KNEW these were going to be insane shows, and they really were! I miss the wolf!

what was the best part is we didn't think they were doing hampton that year and a week before the show bam....tickets went on sale and what a groovy thing, and for the sake of accuracy the DID NOT play as the Warlocks, the ticket sid"formerly the Warlocks"

Got some inside news about the Warlocks show and some unbelievable doses! Could not believe I got Dark Start and Attics in the same show. Yet Another Magical Moment !

My friend gave me a Warlocks ticket for this date, and I asked what band is this? He informed me that the Dead were playing as the Warlocks, and we both knew it would be something special. The breakout of Dark Star was electrifying, I literally felt an energy zap throughout the audience and my body when those first four notes of Dark Star played, it was amazing. People were screaming and cheering, hugging and dancing, so happy! Later on, we got to hear Death Don't Have No Mercy and Attics of My Life, two more jewels during this night. It was a great experience, everyone was in a really good mood for the rest of the night....happy times indeed. -------------- Oh, what I want to know is are you kind?

These shows just fell into our lap with tix only going on sale two weeks before the shows. And they still hold strong as the best ever! Even the first night is overlooked because of the second night list...but it is awesome as well.

Just a few years into the band,my bro Tony and friends from jersey went in my moms car. Sorry Sal that you couldn't make it, but it was a night that I wont forget. The vibes in and out that night were amazing. This was the show that blessed many people locals and heads alike and that is what I am GR8FUL for ! Thank you for a real time! Be blessed

I downloaded this show from archive.org a few years ago. One of the most tight and the best mix of trippy and big jam tunes of my collection. I can't imagine how amazing it would have been to experence it live.

Besides the incredible breakouts, what I remember most about the show was after the lights came on at the end, everyone just exploded in a thunderous applause. The energy in the colisseum was palpable. This night was truly a magical experience.

So the first night was just a warm up really. It was my 1st Help->Slip->Franklin's. But if you told me that I would have a Dark, Death Dont Have No Mercy, Attics of My Life, & Help->Slip->Franklin's I would have checked your pulse. The lot was buzzing after the first show, except for me. I had the rug pulled out from under my feet the night before, when I discovered my ex was with my good friend. I didn't sleep at all after making the discovery. She was kind enough to hook me with tickets, but my ticket was painful to look at. I tried to enjoy the lot, good friends & kind nugz. My heart just wasn't in it. It was nearing show time when I saw her with her new boyfriend. It killed me. I left the lot and miracled my ticket. I didn't think twice about it, I just gave it to a person in a hotel parking lot. I was basically inconsiulable. I meet a friend, we started smokin' & I told him my sob story. When I got to the point where I miracled my ticket, his jaw dropped. He told straight up that I totally lost my mind. We parted, & I headed back into the lot. I made some new friends, started drinking some wine with them. When I told them I miracles my ticket, they too looked at me with horror. Everyone was talking about the Dark Star that was going to happen. It was the 'buzz'. It was almost show time, the new friends I had met were packing up to head in. There was an arguement for a minute or two, then this guy came to me as I was leaving. He told me he didn't want to do this, but I seemed like a nice person. In his hand was a ticket. He gave it to me!! I don't know his name, hell, I can't even remember what he looks like. I think he wanted to sell it but his girlfriend wanted him to give it to me. That's what I think the arguement was over. About an hour & a half later, my ears heard the first notes of a song I never thought I would have heard. It was like being on a mountain, exposed, at night. It was the the first sight of light on the horizon. My first Dark Star... After that second set, I was back on my feet and ready for the rest of the tour. Ce Ya Jenifer.

I recall soundcheck included a couple of run throughs of A Little Light and Attics. This was my favorite show of the 110 I attended, supplanting the beautiful 11-1-85. I didn't think they still had it in them, but this show was awe-inspiring.

I really wish i was at this one...What a second set. I just heard an excelent recording of this show and all i can say is ......Why didn't i go?????????

We were so used to waiting in line - very often overnight - for tickets, that when we drove to the coliseum to buy these and saw NO line at the box office, we were most skeptical, to say the least. Even after walking away with handfuls of those pink and green passes to paradise, we were giggling nervously to each other, unsure whether to believe our fortune or not. Lo and behold, they worked, got us into the shows, and it really was the Dead, not a cover band as our worst fears let us believe. AND... it was 2 nights of unsurpassed joy! The Boys were on fire, and we soaked in every burning note. Leaving, I remember how everyone was smiling at each other in disbelief and gratitude. We all got a miracle.

Not a bad version, even if it is more of a slightly coherent version of Space than a classic Dark Star. The fans went a little too nuts, but it was great. Gotta say, never been an Attics fan.

I was glad that the Grateful Dead were able to pull off these shows under their previous name, the Warlocks. I found out about the shows and a friend of mine that was connected in the music scene knew a woman in Hampton. He contacted her and her father who did not even know us stood in line and purchased our tickets. Somehow or another the local newspaper found out we were going and considering the Grateful Dead were going to play in our home town of Charlotte, NC they asked if they could go up with us to Hampton to see what it was all about. We went to the shows and had a blast. During this show we went to the backstage area before the show and wound up right in the first row in front of Phil. It was a great experience and it was great to see them play dark star and attics of my life. The rest of the shows were well played too. After we got back home my neighbor came by and gave me a laminated page of the Charlotte Observer that chronicled my trip up there with my friend. It was awesome. It was nearly 20 years after that when I heard that they were releasing the shows as a box set. I was not too sure about purchasing it since I had killer cd's and even really good video of the shows. Then out of the blue a woman in NY contacted me through Facebook and said she saw the newspaper article about my trip up there with my friend Mitch. I asked her where she saw it and she said it was in the box set. I flipped out. Needless to say I had to buy it. When It arrived it had the whole Charlotte Observer article about the trip in it. It still flips me out. The photo of me and my friend at the show is during the first few notes of Help On The Way from the night before. I feel privileged that everything came together so that I could be at that show and that it was included in the box set for the event.

I recognize all these comments are from 2007 but decided to re-listen to this show at work today and couldn't resist commenting. Tickets were in the air that night, no doubt. I was a freshman at ODU in Norfolk and remember a smoking hot hippie chick miracled me almost as soon as my finger went in the air. I still have that "Warlocks" ticket stub now framed with a pick of the Fat Man noodling in his home studio. I didn't know how special this 10.9.89 was that night but today relish in full appreciation of its magic almost 30 years later. Bravo boys, bravo!

I had attended '84 & '86 through '88 but chose the latter part of this tour and missed these shows. I have no regrets. I've listened to this show hundreds of times and can tell it was a magical night. It was a magnificent tour. I was fortunate enough to see Dark Star in Miami at the end of the tour which was also an exceptional show but not like 10/9/89.

This one will definitely one every Dead Head should have
