Rockpalast tv show
This show was broadcast live on TV and Radio in England and was the first time i had seen the Dead since 1972 at the Lyceum.
I had gotten into other types of music and thought they had gone the same way as the other SF bands of the 60's
The show would be a good one to bring out on DVD

Saw that one too. I have been listening to them since about `72, but that was the show that "did it" for me. Check these sites:

It is not out yet, but it is just a matter of time (i hope!)

hey bob.good mrning i just read your comment on the essen show 81.in fact i allways had the feeling that they were organising this shows only to have a good argument to persuade the GD to come and play.because this gig was the climax.afterwords it just dried out."hey guys come to essen,u will b playing in front of 4O million people.."clever,clever..:-)(-:
Flying Karamazov Brothers
Returned from a small trip, no tickets available any more, so I had to watch the show on TV. I think we heard the best Sugaree guitar solo ever played by Jerry. And the performance really got smoking with Estimated Prophet, gathering breath with He's gone, followed with a mind blowing Other One. The Dead met the FKB on their visit to Essen and invited them for a show, and so they did, juggling while Bill and Mickey played on their drums. Then Pete Townshend joined the Dead when they found their way out with a fiery Not fade away. Wow, seems like yesterday. theo
first contact
Way back in the 80's in Germany rock music had made its appearance in television via shows like the Rockpalast concerts. That was a series of shows during the late 70' s and all through the 80's. When you was a young kid and could not get into the shows you had a chance to listen to great live music on television. The usual scene then was a bunch of like minded friends got together in someones parents livingroom and had a nice little party and a very good time with music being played live at the Rockpalast shows. I was 16 years old when this show was put on. I knew the Who and liked them a lot (I still do) but none of my friends wanted to listen to them so I decided to watch the show alone. Of the other act on this evening I had never heard anything so that would be a nice surprise eventually. I managed to organize a little something and having the living room for myself cause my parents had gone out on this evening I made myself comfortable, had a smoke and got excited over the Who. After a break the next band came onstage. Being unfamiliar to the laid back style of the Dead then I still remember thinking: What kind of band is this that they need such a long time for tuning their instruments? But then the music started and with growing amazement I listened to this kind of strange overwhelming music. I had never heard anything like that before. The magic worked its way towards me even through those shitty little television loudspeakers. Unbelievable. I've been a fan ever since. Love and peace
What a long strange night it was
chinacat1954I taped this show from Danish Radio FM transmission. The Who was first and the at 1 oclock the Grateful Dead took the stage. At the same time Europe switched to daylight saving so you can saythey started at 2 oclok. I have just relistened that old tape. At 547 am (!) the radio speaker notes that Swedish Television has stopped the transmission. Then Jerry lights another cigarette and the Encore One More Saturday Night takes off. So they finishes after 4 hours at about 6 in the morning. I nodded of once in a while but got the entire night incl. The Who at tape. Later I was happy to provide copies to close friends that I did not know shared my alomost secret interest in the Grateful Dead.
The radio speaker signs off at 559 am saying that though the guys are old, they are still good. Man they had still 15 years of music to give!
it was the beginning

Shakedown
Middle of the first set nice treat after Mexicali. Great Venue saw the Dead there 9 years later. For that show about 1 hour before the doors opened a whole bunch of guys rode up from the local Motorcycle club and was the gate security outside before you could get to the doors inside.
Saw Phil playing drums with his son when we walked in.
