Buckeye 1991
this has gotta be the biggest show i ever attended. Way fun but just many, many people. If I recall the violent femmes opened and possibly 10,000 maniacs?? I remeber Natalie Merchant at one or two of the shows I attended.
Openers for these shows
Openers for these shows included Bruce Hornsby, Violent Femmes, Sting, Steve Winwood and perhaps...Steve Miller...
One in particular was plagued by all day rain which became worse and worse as the concert went on.....everyone was holding their tarps together.
Next to Alpine Valley, Buckeye Lake was the best outdoor venue I ever attended.....We always hoped they would do a run of shows there, but it did not happen....
Buckeye Lake
It was Steve Miller at that show my friends. I'm sad to say that was my first and last show. Yes it was a great place for a show!
who has a copy of this show
who has a copy of this show that i could get. i was there and it has always been one of my faves. Violent Femmes opener?! come on!!! need this show1
A long, long, crazy, crazy night
This was my first show. After that night I was hooked...spent the next seven years planning everything else around touring as much as I could. It was a HOT day and the place was jammed! When the show was over, at first I refused to believe that it had ended. LOL We spent the night in the vast fields learning what it was all about and feeling the vibes. Words can barely do justice to that show and that entire night. Bruce played with the band for Sugaree and I can't remember if any other songs had him. And Jerry said "we don't let just anybody sit in..." I was so close to the stage that I didn't need to go any further up. Imagine hundreds of acres of Shakedown Street after a show...

Was this one of the shows where they flew in on a helicopter...I think it was. When the music finally started, it only took a few seconds to realize why everyone was dancing continuously.
At Buckeye Lake there were no paved parking areas, it was all fields. For the entire night after the show we walked around and kept running into people we knew. The hissing sounds of tanks filled the air, but (believe it or not) at that time, we really weren't sure what the deal was with the tanks. People in the distance were yelling out things like "Doses!" and "Ice Cold Nitrous...MEDICAL" Eventually we caught on to the madness.
Imagine hundreds of acres of Shakedown Street after a show...practically no security....now leave the rest to your imagination.
Having the show in my collection has been a pleasure ever since.
Was this show at a racetrack?
I can't remember if I was at this show or not. I'm trying to figure out what shows I was at. Those days are a little hazy. I remember seeing a show in the midwest where the Violent Femmes opened. I thought it was at a race track. I remember during the show an ultralight plane flew over and Bobby told the crowd that Jerry said it looked like a Texas dragonfly. Is this the same show?
My first dead show
This show was my first Dead show and also was the very first concert/show I had ever attended. What an experience to have your first concert ever be the Grateful Dead, and that the show was incredible as well. Steve Miller was adequate too, but the second Jerry hit the stage I had forgotten all about him. I remember the parking lot/field, 6 hours before the show, the party was awesome. The drums in the tree-line. The people from anywhere, and everywhere. Baba Oreily ending the show couldn't have been more poetic. Was that Bruce Hornsby on the keyboards? I seem to recall people around me saying it was. Does anyone know where I can get a recording/ bootleg of this show? 7/1/92.
You will not believe this but it is all so true
About a month maybe 6 weeks before the show at Buckeye Lake the Cleveland Plain Dealer had a story about The Grateful Dead playing and there was going to be another band opening up but it was not known who the band was. My friend John read the paper and he asked me if I knew who was opening (like I had inside info with Jerry,Bob and the band.) I thought for a minute and told him it was the Violent Femmes. That seemed highly unlikely to me, so I told him, he shut up about it and I had thought no more of it. Fast forward to the show. I was feeling pretty good concidering everything that went so wrong. We went in a friends van, and he just had to bring his dog. A bad ass German Shepard named Taco. Taco almost tore off my left index finger when I tried to slap him for scaring off a shirt vendor. On the way to the show I was holding my hand, dying for lack of water and a lady selling food hollered "killer tacos." I found a line to get fresh water I had no money by now and I was hot and thirsty and eaten like 7 things. I was up there. I got some water and found a spot on the hill and dropped. I told myself that I was not going to get up for anything. Then, from the stage I heard "Please Welcome The Violent Femmes." No way dude, someone is messing with my head. That ended up being the best show I ever attended, bar none! And thank you to the heads who helped Taco back in the van, you guys saved that crazy dog. And sorry to the head who my buddy literally threw off his couch after the show. My buddy with the van and the dog was not much of a peace and love kind of guy. But now almost 20 years later, Taco got killed by a bus. My buddy with the van and Taco died a few years ago of a cancer. And my buddy John who inspired this story, may he rest in peace as he has gone home a few months ago due to a massive heart attack. Remember to smile on cloudy days. Peace.
3 shows at Buckeye Lake
As I was reading some comments I realized that I saw the Grateful Dead 3 times at Buckeye Lake. The first time was in 88. Bruce Hornsby opened and it was very hot. Cleveland set it's all time record high temp of 104. In 91 it was the Violent Femmes who I just wrote about, and the other show I saw there Steve Miller opened. Something happened to the sound during the start of Fly Like An Eagle, and they restarted it right to the next note in the song, like they were just there lip-syncing. Call me crazy, some says I am some says I aint. Peace.
great story
re the Femmes. Clearly the universe was messing with you!
Buckeye Lake
'91 - Violent Femmes'92 - Steve Miller Band
'93 - Sting
'94 - Traffic
I have MANY great Buckeye lake memories. . . Violent Femmes was an incerdible choice for an opening band, Steve Miller and his harmonica player took the stage with The Dead for a few tunes, and Sting played "A Day In The Life". But, the best was the year Traffic openned. The night before my friend came from a Traffic show at another venue near Cleveland, and he said it was one of the best shows he had ever seen. He and i are HUGE Traffic fans, so I made up my mind to hitch a ride the next morning to Buckeye to see Traffic, as well as the Dead. I got Miracled in, and I got to hear my beloved Traffic live for the first and last time. Also, unbeknownst to me, this would be the last time I would see the Grateful Dead with Jerry. GREAT show. I may be getting the years confused, but i think that was the year it rained all day. Me and my friends got in and went to the tree line towards the end of the opening anct and started a fire in the would, by sacrificing my Captain Trips costume. Other heads would come up with dry scraps of paper and wood to burn and stand by the fire. We eventually ran into the show as The Dead openned with "Rain" by the Beatles, as we are all Beatle FANATICS. Just then the cpos busted up the fire. It looked like they might have even made a few arrests. I regret that anyone enjoying our fire might have gotten busted, but I am glad that we narrowly escaped due to the combination of Beatles and Grateful Dead!
buckeye 91
I dont member an ultralite, but i was shroomin n hungover hard. buckeye was not a racetrack, but a giant grassed field with a stage at the bottom of a hill "secured" by orange snowfence.
