Donna was so fucking prego!
My first dead show.... I remember the wall of sound getting it;s groove on a couple songs into the first set. Donna waddled on during a couple songs and I thought she was going to give birth any second. It was a great show ! Worthy of a Dick's picks for sure! I have never herd the tapes but it seems to be universaly loved.I was ...well it was the 70's and I was 15 in a state of nirvana! Fil B
the gallant Bob Weir
We had a ball sitting in a big group of friends. They were so good back then. I remember Bob jumping in front of Donna Jean to protect her when some fool jumped up on the stage and was approaching DJ. Too weird, but Bob didn't mess around, he was no nonsense, the man!!!!
Terry Haggerty (from the old
Terry Haggerty (from the old Sons of Champlin) plays heavenly----go listen if and whenever you get the chance.
My first Dead show
I was in San Diego for a year only and went to several concerts at the Sports Arena. When the Grateful Dead came, I was not a fan but went to the concert anyway. As soon as they started playing I became a fan for life. I was in a trance the whole time. I was blown away. It was the best show I have ever seen. I will always remember it. P.S. I could have sworn they played Morning Dew but I don't see it in the set list above. Is it possible that it's not on the set list but they played it anyway? Anybody else remember that? Or is my memory failing me? :)
wall of sound? not
my bad. wall of sound debuted in '74. Still, kudos to the sound guys for creating excellent sound in a basketball arena. the mix was perfect, even up in the nosebleed section. The only other sound guy who could even come close was Dinky Dawson, who the Dead met (and admired) when he worked with the Fleetwood Mac Blues Band.
Soundboard anyone?

His job is to shed light, not to master...
I just listened to this show
Last week and it is one of my favorites - the Other>Big River>Other>Eyes>Other>Wharf Rat is phenomenal, a total mind blower.. and yes it is a sbd.
"I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Dust off those rusty strings just one more time. Gonna make em shine."
Was there also
Right up front of stage for the night. As mentioned above, I too remember the guy getting on stage and heading towards Donna. When Bob jumped into action Jerry seemed to be just laughing - not missing a note.
sports arena
I remember that after the show, my buddy rick and I headed up towards the stage. a guy got in a scuffle with one of the roadies, and weir jumped off the stage and got into the scuffle, and the cops grabbed all of them. think it was this show... definitely at the sports arena....
scuffle memories
I remember clearly, Donna was pregnant, Weir looked he was protecting her from the goofball jumping up on the stage.
sports arena
and as I further recall, bob went to jail, and vowed never to play SD again.... and they didn't for five years.... returning to play at the civic theater, next to golden hall, for two nights... think the two shows labeled "golden hall" which everyone goes crazy over were actually across the courtyard at the civic theater, a venue set up for plays and music, as opposed to golden hall a typical multi-purpose exposition-type hall.
30 Trips
This is the 1973 selection on the 30 Trips Around the Sun boxset. This show is phenomenal, one of my all time favorites, right up there with the Dave's Picks 5 show which is the next show of this tour. Get yourself a copy of this one, it's well worth it. 1972 30T show is amazing too.
