What a wonderful gift. Your daughter sounds like a beautiful child in all her wonderment. Must be a special joy to see her be able to express herself. I'm sure you are as proud of her as we all are of you for what you have done. What a wonderful world, with people like you and your family making it shine.

    The "Talker"
Our little girl recently received a grant for a special speech device to help her communicate. It is a laptop sort of machine with touch icons that can be made into sentences that will speak in a childs voice. It is lightweight and drop-down-the-stairs durable but drop-your-jaw expensive coming in at close to 10k. We are so inspired and excited at the depth and range this machine offers. We appreciate the work everyone at the hospital and school have done to get this grant for Haley and the opportunity brings for her. We have a very cool network of people. We already had one other girl but wanted another child. We wanted a brother or sister and as '01 approached thought it would be cool to have a baby in 2001 like 2001 A Space Odyssey. Haley didn't show up until '02. That was alright cuz' she was well worth waiting for. When she came to us, we were thrilled and elated. Mama had come down with the Lyme disease mid-term. She got pretty sick and as you might imagine and we were very worried. Haley was born seemingly healthy and happy though and her eyes had beautiful sparkles. We thought she was just a quiet baby because she made very few sounds until well after 1 year. She would crawl over to the family photo albums and point at different pictures of people and activities. Her coordination was a bit off and she was a little bit different...she could hear an airplane, motorcycle or a train long before anyone noticed the sound. Sirens were out of the question. The catch all label of "delayed" was all they could come up with as the guru's at the top of the specialist chain said she was probably a 1 in 20 like her in the world. Just a special unique condition but a very amazing sweet smiling girl. Soon after that, our journey to speech began. They call it apraxia of speech. We have worked hard and so has Haley with her SLP's the last few years and we just had a great 6 year birthday party for her. We have met many wonderful Speech Language Pathologists, teachers, other parents of "delayed" and autistic children and have been working with sign, gestures, pictures and interpretation. The theory is that the wiring is just not quite connected but through ongoing therapy and different forms of communication including musical instrments, computers , books and the "Talker", we will get there and she will eventually speak. Haley was able to have the opportunity to use one of two "Talker's" sent to the big city Children's Hospital as loaner grants in lieu of obtaining funding from insurance. They felt that Haley has a good chance of learning how to use it and having it help her connect the wires so she will eventually speak. We will hopefully get a permanent "Talker" once our insurance company approves her case. It looks good...we have letters from Dr.'s, specialists, SLP's, teachers, all in for review and we are very hopeful. I wish I could tell you how it feels to hear her say "My name is Haley, I am six years old and I have two cats and a fish." "What is your name?" "Let's play!" even though it is a voice that comes out of a machine...it's coming tfrom her. It is amazing and she is smiling as she now starts to be able to tell her story. This little girl is the most amazing person I have ever met. She is full of life and amazing spirit that fills the room with creative wonder, expression and laughter. Now, her voice is coming through the "Talker" and we have a lot of thigs to talk about. I can hear her voice... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Walk into splintered sunlight Inch your way through dead dreams to another land" Robert Hunter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Ray, a drop of golden sun"

I'm not sure if I'm asking this in the right forum area, but I hope so...Both of my parents have been life-long Deadheads. They started going to shows together in the mid-70's, and the music didn't stop until their divorce. My dad was Tim Davie, not sure if his name will ring a bell for anyone. He had a lot of friends, met a lot of awesome people, and always loved to have a good time. He worked his @$$ off every single day of my life to support his family. He passed away suddenly on Saturday February 12- less than a week ago. He was only 54. My younger brother and I are making arrangements for his memorial service. We have decided to create a soundtrack for him- and also for us. We were able to find a couple of songs that remind us of him. But even though we both grew up dancing around barefoot to the Dead, we are both at a complete loss for GD songs for the soundtrack. Can anyone suggest any GD songs that would be a good addition to Dad's soundtrack? Thanks so much for any suggestions <3

Can I talk about the novel I just published?? Available on Amazon.com? Called "The Hallucinogenic Bible". Based on years following the Dead around the country, being harassed by cops, sleeping in rest areas, selling sodas and grilled cheese, arguing with friends about the religious implications of the Dead? Is this the kind of thing I can brag about?? I hope so..... "The Hallucinogenic Bible" by J.T. Gossard

After 33 years of working, I retired today: Look for me on the slopes at Mary Jane starting Monday March 7th and throughout the month of March. I'll have my fly rod too if I see some stream water flowing freely....

So sorry for your lost, life is a fragile gift that is lost easy. I would suggest He's Gone,And to lay me down. Fire on the mountain and Shakedown street. Do you know what your father's favorite songs were? I would try to include them. I hope that this helps you in your time of sorrow.

Gr8fulTed ........Now, this isn't as good, but could be funny. A few weeks ago, my 7 yr. old grandson got in trouble @ school for peeing on the grass @ the playground. (my son thinks he was showing off or something) Last week, he got an award for highest academic score in the 2nd grade.....go figure-one extreme to the other....OH, maybe he takes a bit after me....haha....:)))

Let's see...Mary Jane, that's Winter Park, no?I'm thinking about retiring so I can listen to the E72 Box. I'm going to Steamboat this summer - it's going to be odd with no snow. I'll be training there because three weeks later is the SF 1/2 marathon. I did it last year and it about killed me - guess I'm a glutton for punishment! (My oldest daughter will be with me and hopefully she'll get me through with a little less agony). Have to say I'm a bit envious. Enjoy!!! " Where does the time go? "

After a completetly catastrophic end to 2010 (4 deaths in 3 months), things are improving so dramatically that I can barely believe it. I keep pinching myself to make sure that it is true, and not some dream that I will wake up from right back in the same old nightmare. Also I am happy to say that my daughter is pulling out of her year of sickness and loss-depression, and is back to focusing on school and going foreward. We are going to have a Give Thanks for Life Improvement Fest on the Spring Solstice this year.********************************** I am not young enough to know everything. Oscar Wilde

As a novice fisherman, it should be comical to watch me tie flies and actually hook and land a rainbow or brown trout in some beautiful setting. Kevin, I will be in Steamboat later in March to ski; however, the Yampa River runs through downtown and may offer a wading opportunity.Tiger Lilly: I'm really glad for you and your daughters looking ahead to better times ahead: I'll google Life Improvement on the Solstice. It just might help all of us out! Thanks Mary and Gypsy Cowgirl for the well-wishes: you know I'll be in contact when I visit northern California.

Amicus Foundation (Matthew Kelly, Bob Weir) who help refugees in Thailand are auctioning a Jerry Garcia guitar, Lucky #13. Please visit our website 4 more infohttp://www.jerrygarciaguitar.com June 5th-12th on eBay we will auction of a Jerry Garcia guitar we nicknamed Lucky #13. Virtually all proceeds of this auction will go to benefit Amicus Foundation (Matthew Kelly, Bob Weir). Can you please help us spread the word? Maybe a news item on your website, or a mention in your Twitter accounts? Briefly; This is an authenticated Jerry Garcia guitar made by the guitar building masters at Alembic: serial number #72-13, custom made for Jerry Garcia in 1972, the thirteenth instrument made by Alembic., June 5th at 7PM PST we will start the auction for this guitar on eBay. Virtually all proceeds from this auction will go to benefit Amicus Foundation. Amicus is dedicated to helping children at risk, developing educational opportunities and working with impoverished communities in Thailand., The guitar is steeped in history. In the early days of the Grateful Dead, Alembic, under Stanley "Bear" Owsley's inspiration, was making instruments and PAs that pushed the envelope, experimented with new ideas and were built as road worthy as possible using military grade electronics. Things that had never been done before with a guitar or bass were accomplished by Alembic. This guitar embodies all those qualities, especially the electronics. For example, there is an inline analogue filter with resonance that can really provide a truly unique sound. Jerry Garcia gave this guitar to Matthew Kelly during a recording session of "A Wing and A Prayer". Matthew in turn has donated the guitar to Amicus for auction. , Lots of photos and all the info you need concerning the guitar, the auction and Matthew's relationship with the extended GD family can be viewed here:, http://www.jerrygarciaguitar.com

Since they won't come to Europe I am very excited to have tickets booked to see Furthur near Portland on 27/28/29 September. It all fitted in perfectly with a planned work related trip to the US and with a little persuasion from Hal R, I am all set. Looking forward to meeting some folks there, Mona and Johnman and others. Now I just have to wait.
