Johnny B. Goode, The Promised Land, Around And Around - all Chuck Berry songs (Rock & Roll)
Mama Tried, Sing Me Back Home - Merle Haggard songs (Bakersfield Country & Western)
Oh Babe, It Ain't No Lie - Elizabeth Cotten (North Carolina Country/Folk - performed by acoustic GD). She also wrote and recorded a song titled 'Shake Sugaree' that might have inspired the Garcia/Hunter song 'Sugaree'.
Tore Up Over You (3rd JG solo album) - Hank Ballard & The Midnighters (50s R & B). The song was written by Ballard. Ballard also just happened to write 'The Twist'...yeah 'The Twist'!
El Paso - Marty Robbins (Texas Country & Western). Written by Robbins who also wrote a song called 'Sugaree' that was covered by Hank Ballard and might have also inspired Garcia/Hunter's 'Sugaree'.
I think you can see their influences were many and varied...and don't forget about the Jazz influence of John Coltrane & Miles Davis...they would have their main influences on the 'Jams' & 'Space' portions of shows (imho). As another poster stated read, read, read!

Joined:Know the root, but don't know the GD songHopefully someone can help me with this, I know the root of the song, just don't know the name of the song GD played it as or what recordings I might find it on. It's a cover of Emerson, Lake, & Palmer's "Karn Evil 9 - 1st Impression: Part II" - Lyrics go "Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends. We're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside...." I'm positive they've covered the song and about 99% sure it featured Bob Weir on vocals. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've referred to his site many times over the years, and I get worried every time I look at the note at the bottom of the front page that reads "Last updated 12/13/1996". So, I archived all of his information from that website, and I'd like to get in touch with him regarding it, but the e-mail address listed for him isn't valid any more, and I can't seem to find him anywhere on the internet. Joined:historyHey , Rockwithyouboy,, Man there is so much history of the Dead it would take weeks to tell you everything .. soo many books out there also (probobley more books than i know abt.),, my best suggestion for you would be the public library..and lots of internet work, also,,..The Grateful Deads history go`s way back to the early 60`s. Jerry Garcia got into blugrass,folk type music and also some gospel music.. The Dead , was first named the Warlocks, then eventually changed the name to the GD ,, from my understanding the name Grateful Dead was derived from old scotich folklore..Meaning one who has passed with unfinished buissness, when the dead took care of the unfinished buissness then they (the dead people) where considered grateful,, and then they could pass on to the other side or whatever,.. Hope my info is correct,, and hope this helps you out ,.... good luck with your paper ,,..
