PITTSBURGH BLUES We had some very good tickets down on the floor in Phil's Zone, but the folding chairs were crammed really close together, so we took apart the rows of seats to allow us room to dance during the CSN set. Well, after the CSN, the security guards came around and made us set the seats back up, but we did not set them up the way they originally were, and then security came back around to check that everyone was in their proper seats, and ours did not exist, and my friend was told "FIND YOUR SEAT OR GO TO JAIL!!!" Brent did not sing any of his tunes at this show, it was the only show on the tour where that was the case- I think he was about to sing one during first set, but he seemed unhappy with his monitors, and batted the mic stand away in frustration. On the View From The Vault DVD you can see Brent messing with something under his towel, if you freeze-frame slowly through it you can get a quick glimpse of what he was doing!! High-energy show with a rare 2nd-set Wang Dang Doodle. ". . . Music is the best!" (fz)

So Pitt what was Brent doing? I used to have the VFTV but it was so crappy I gave it away though I do remember during Let It Grow Brent did knock his mic out of the way.

I got 3rd row tickets for this one for some friends and my mom and stepfather, who saw their first and only show here. My mom was wearing these cool pewter earrings that were lizards biting their own tails to form a hoop. I'm embarrased to say that I hooked up with a girl I liked from high school and was making out with her through several songs. I don't think it's necessarily right to make out with somebody in front of your mom. I was only 19, though. Oh well, nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile. Sheepishly. Phil saw us making out and gave me a smile sometime during the first set. During 'Estimated,' these big skeletons emerged from either side of the stage and started to dance around, which, unfortunately, you can't see on the DVD 'cause it's all tight shots of the band. Like most of '90, this was a great show with consistently solid musicianship.

Buty, despite a confirmation on a local radio station I picked up as I enetered town, teh two groups did not perform together.

This show started my summer tour for me, after a friend and travel partner bailed on me at the last minute, I had to let a couple of tickets go....This was a beautiful show...I really could just step into the music and did not stop dancing the entire time. I was with a relative stranger who was from pittsburgh and hooked up a couple of us by taking us to a hotel to stay and picking us up the next day to take us to the show!Great time, Great people.

Took friends Eric and Paul to this 1. The Skeletons were huge!!! The 2nd set jams were awesome as Eric stated don't they ever sing, and how long are there songs? I just had to laugh!!! Eric loved Bob's screamin at the end of Estimated!!!! Very hot day, and the music was hotter!!!!

Does anybody else remember the skeleton's leg falling off during "Miracle". I swear I saw it happen, but I was pretty ripped. And Bobby's echoing "yeah, yeah, yeahs" during "Estimated"....no wonder that's my favorite Bob tune. I don't think this is caught on the DVD, as it doesn't pick up the echo effects, plus the camera never leaves Jerry, so we miss Bob charging the front of the stage. Great day with CSN and the Dead. God, I miss these shows.

Great day for me and my buddy Mike. That morning we ran into Jerry at the indoor pool at the Vista. We rapped a bit and took a swim by his side. It was all good that day!

crosby,stills,and nash were a nice opener for this show.always wanted to see them and this was the place.when i got there i did not know they where playing.the stadium was not the best,but some good times for sure in the memory bank.

This was an amazing show, my 21st birthday and my first dose, how could have it been bad. I saw the skeleton too. The thing that I remember most is sitting so high up and wanting to slide down to the stage on top of people heads :) good memories.... Does any one remember that that was the first time that CSN had played Woodstock in 20 years.....

You're right SMB, that was the first time CSN had played the song "Woodstock" in a long time. Do you recall the hot air balloon floating over the stadium?

I was on the only full Dead tour I could make and we did not mail order for this show. I think we were thinking of skipping due to the driving up from Louisville then back south to Raleigh. But after the 2nd show of the tour we were like umm ok what were we thinking, LOL. I actually got a little nostalgic on the 4th but it was not until having some time yesterday that I finally signed up to be able to post. And as I feared getting a bit carried away with it all, lol. Perhaps that is why I waited so long to sign up??? We scored some upper deck tix on the off ramp from the highway and we did not care, great we are in before we even hit the lot :) We were able to move down a couple levels to an empty row that no one showed up for all nite. I read a couple comments about Brent doing something under his towel. This entire tour I noticed Brent looking a bit odd, leaving the stage frequently and often rubbing his nose upon returning. I saw Brent off stage before his last show, World Music Theatre - July 23, 1990, he did not look real good so I was not surprised to hear not much later that he had died. I took 3 pictures of him before the show and I don't think he wanted me to do so. The first 2 pix are not in focus and by the 3rd he had put his hand over his face. I think I'll have to watch the View From The Vault for this one tonight and do a little reliving and remembering/reminding.

I absolutely loved how Jerry sang knocking on heavens door. To me this was the highlight of the show. I have talked to many people about this show and they all agree this was one of the best shows of that tour.

... I was 17. It was indeed a scorcher, as Wolfman pointed out. I ended up with some serious sunburn on my face. I loved that they opened with "Touch" (I was, after all, a "Touch-head"), and I went nuts when I heard "Tom Thumb." I recall staring in wonder at the shirt of the guy in front of me: it had lyrics to "Eyes of the World" on it, and the boys were singing it onstage. Cosmic! (I think the drugs were kicking in then - ha!) The real revelation for me that night, though, was the scene, and all of the truly kind folks in the lot and in the stadium. A truly wonderful evening, really put me "on the bus" for good.

You can choose to piss it away on yourself or become the fullness of your person in HIm. He's God. You never will be. This is the real Enlightenment.

My first show as well. It was the summer I graduated and my friend and I dorve form Cleveland. We trade goods for tickets, and were more interested in CSN at the time. I even remember one of us saying, after CSN's set, "The Grateful Dead are really gonna have to pull something off to top that set." We had NO idea. Once the Dead took the stage, we knew what it was all about. And I've never been the same. And thank god for that!!!

I still have the VFTV; checked it out last night...snore. I have found watching the band play is not as good as just listening. blah blah. the bonus material on the VFTV is worth keeping the DVD.

CSN opened this show and I believe that they played for about 75 minutes. Oddly enough I saw CSN four times this summer. Pittsburgh, Richfield, Great Woods & Buffalo. The Richfield date had the band in a 23,000 seat arena and only about 1,500 people in attendance. There were some frat types who claimed to the top of the upper where there is plenty of room in the corners (think an oval arena in a rectangular building). Anyway these chaps couldn't make it to the rest room and just urinated on the wall. Later I saw someone added vomit. Nice. I'd expect this behavior at a Guns N' Roses concert... Not the beautiful sounds of CSN. At Great Woods people just urinated in the bushes... which is nothing new there. I've seen this at a James Taylor concert there. This was a great show. I'm surprised that there are no recordings on the Pittsburgh or Buffalo CSN sets. BTW, This was the first of the four "View From The Vault" series.

First Dead show, 19 years old. Too much to write. Green Blotter, if I remember right the show started around 4:30 and wasn’t over until around 11:30. Southern Cross & Knocking on Heavens Door I’ll never forget.

Hitchhiked from Virginia. So Glad I Made It. Pittsburgh show had a lot of energy. The band seemed really present. Felt good enough about the band to go on to Raleigh where the gate crasher crowd showed up and bummed me out.
