SWEET CHAOS

Hello David, David, thank you for all you do to share the music, the vibe, the culture of the Grateful Dead. I am old enough to have been on the "Bus" at an early age, but came later: much due to hearing the Grateful Dead Hour. I just reread Carolyn Brightman's insightful book "Sweet Chaos;" and though I sometimes perceive jacket blurbs as overblown, am in accord with your laudatory words. This is a serious book, which places the band in context; and does so in a scholarly and entertaining fashion. What I am wondering is if you interviewed Ms. Brightman for a Grateful Dead Hour show. If so, would love to hear that show. Again, David, thank you for all you do. David L jenkins

I have not. I haven't been sure what to make of it. I think the whole 'scholarly' thing has made me keep it at arm's length. I'm always afraid those folks will miss the point. But to be fair I haven't given it a chance. The 'context' you mentioned: What context are you referring to? (.... the one the book does such a good job of placing the band in).

Sweet Chaos

Carol Brightman was very active in radical politics in the '60s. The book tells her story and looks at the Grateful Dead from the perspective of a contemporary who was on a very different cultural path. Carol had access to the GD world through her sister, Candace, who was the Dead's lighting director. I'll add GD Hours 539 and 540 to the queue. Ridiculous and sublime

David-Thanks for this hoot of a show. I posted a comment on archive.org a while ago for this show. It teeters on the precipice of so many rock and roll performances...ridiculous and sublime. This one tends towards the ridiculous....its carefree, almost naieve youthful sillyness, though, is just sublime. Thanks. And, I must say, its so wonderful and nostalgic to hear so many of these shows that kept me (and everyone else in their presence) company on so many long drives to shows, back and forth to college, work, et cetera, before I gave them all away. I've always wanted to thank you for making low gen, high quality soundboard recordings of the Grateful Dead to budding Deadheads like me in the late 80's and early 90's. Thanks. Those battered XLIIS-90's really helped me connect even more deeply to the music than I could have ever done otherwise. Thanks so much!

Ridiculous and sublime
