Civic Center Wall Walkers
People without tickets scaled the upper structure of the Civic Center and went in through the uppper windows. We stood outside and watched ---- it looked like the circus, or a sci fi movie.
Walking In
Somehow we got lost IN the Civic Center LOL - and ended up underneath in some sort of catacomb. Very bizarre we were the only people around - almost like we ended up in the back hallways. (Think Spinal Tap trying to find the stage - only all white walls like in Cuckoos Nest). It was hilarious!
We only stopped when we hit a solid wall and could go no furthur. Bertha was shaking the foundation of the whole arena and it sounded like we were underneath the stage or close enough. After we decided to NOT follow the intrepid traveler that lead us astray - we quickly button hooked and found our seats before the end of the song. We were quick steppin' it too - Bertha takes on a new meaning and texture when stuck underneath an arena in an echo chamber.
Great cozy seating - right on top of the band - big friendly crowd and if I'm remembering correctly (big old full moon) - might explain the climbers.
Great fun show we had a blast!!!!

May you stay forever young...
wall walkers
Funny I remember that too. I was right next to a guy as we were going in the door and I remember him clearly not having a ticket and looking at that wall like that was the way. I turned around for a second and boom he was gone up the wall. I laughed so hard and then there were a whole bunch of people on the wall and it spread like an epidemic. What a funky buildiing to see a show. That room was kind of hollow which made the sound big. Interesting that they only played here a handful of times in the 70's and 80's . Weird Philly place. But the band always played well in Philly so you had to go!
last east coast show
This was my last EAST COAST show...was really strung out at this point...remember taking the train there...remember I Know you Rider didnt get sung that well, and everyone in the band joined in to sing....
wall walking
hey check this out. I was the guy that started scaling that wall. It was great. I have told that story on several occasion... no one ever believes me. Im glad some of you remember that show It was one of my first. I think I was 17 or 18 and climbing a wall did not seem out of the ordinary. As I recall the show was stellar. The night lasted for days... Oh to be young. Well at least I made it through.. Happy trails.. Kirk out...
ever believes me
My first show!
I was 13 and I lived 45 minutes away, in Wilmington DE. Luckily I got a ride from a school friend, but she decided to stay with her sister at U Penn that night, so I had no ride home. And I was just a kid. A kid who managed to smoke a pcp-laced joint that was passed my way. Other than the freak outs these events caused, it was a hell of a show. I was in the perfect spot, on the balcony Jerry-side, right above the stage, to start the second set. China Cat->Rider fulfilled all my dreams and expectations, and then we got a nice Terrapin too. I'll always remember this show, even thought I saw 80 more shows, many "better" (like Hampton 86 when they busted out Box of Rain, or the Alpine 89 shows, when we Git the first Bid You Goodnight since the closing of Winterland...). Anyway, great show, great memories.
