Yes. I suspect Pig was resting from his short reunion tour with the band in December '71 and fortifying his commitment to sobriety in what had to have been an unfathomably difficult lifestyle change (if not in terms of medical necessity, then certainly in practice).

"Ace" was recorded from January - March '72, but recall that Pig's alcohol-related health problems forced a touring hiatus in August '71 that culminated with hospitalization in September for bleeding ulcers, hepatitis, and spleen problems. He was only able to rejoin the Dead beginning early December in Boston, at which time I recall Phil describing Ron as shockingly frail in his book. Not surprisingly, Pig's contributions are limited, and while progressively more energetic throughout the month (at least to my ears), they are still anemic by historical standards; though by NYE he sounds beat.

In retrospect, it's a miracle that the Dead community (once and future) got Pig back in functional form for the brilliantly recorded European tour, especially given how quickly he dropped off radar for related health problems afterward.

EDIT: And yes, "sabbatical" serves as a neat and entirely appropriate bit of shorthand in conversation among those who know....

essentially it was a dead album with everyone on board contributing except for Micky who was on a sabbatical, (as i see it) and Pig, why wasnt Pig contributing? was he too sick at the time?

CC, your post invites a bit of confusion by suggesting that you saw both the Dead and TSOC on the same NYE bill at Winterland in '69; though 50 years is an understandably long time. It's hard to imagine, but the Dead were not playing on a West Coast home field that December 31st, and were rather in the midst of an odd eastbound triptik that took them to Dallas on 12/26, Hollywood (FL) on 12/28, and the Boston Tea Party on 12/29-30, while closing out at the Fillmore East on 1/2-3/70.

Indeed, the '69 NYE playbill on the poster you linked does not name the Dead. So TSOC and the GoGD were on opposite coasts at the decade's close. In any event, here's a link to a CM SBD for the Dead's '69 NYE show:
    https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1969/12/31?source=87994

Incidentally, I couldn't find a poster for Boston NYE, but here's one from the night before (it would appear the promo dept. missed the spirit of the "grateful" dead; you'd think an impossibly early incarnation of Maiden was playing that night!):
    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YQBsfGwVEeo/TUSkqEWWy3I/AAAAAAAARQs/qRvbGdWK_…

However, you are correct that the Dead played NYE '70 at Winterland, but, consistent with the playbill cited in Deadbase50, the following promo poster does not show TSOC on the same stage, but rather NRPS, "assorted friends" (apparently Hot Tuna), and Stoneground (note also, "lights by Little Princess 109").
    https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/8448089/il_570xN.542921874_q4nc.jpg

Checking Deadbase, here's a link to what seems the complete NYE '70 show; however, it appears to be mix of AUD and FM broadcast that provides poor sound quality through Cumberland (even so, the Truckin' opener is well worth a listen), but thankfully improves in time for the set's highlights at Cryptical and China>Rider through close at UJB.

Regardless of which show you attended, either would've been a great way to kick off your own personal attendance record! Got a story?/K

I can not find the 1st GD show I attended anywhere in GD archives. No GD archive lists the same bands that I saw that night, as confirmed by the Sons archive which has the poster from that night:

<<Wednesday, December 31, 1969: '1969 New Years Eve 1970', Winterland 2000 Post Street at Steiner Street, San Francisco, California
The band was billed only as 'The Sons' on the poster printed for this show. Also on the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna. Lights by Brotherhood of Light. This show, from 8:00pm to 8:00am, was promoted by Bill Graham Presents In San Francisco.>>

    limited releases logic explained

Could you please explain the logic of "limited releases" as it applies to an "alternative" business model, such as the grateful dead" The "limited release" model is a concept taken from the good old music biznezz, in order to promote sales, keep prices high, and maintain collector value of limited products.
I "missed" the window for daves pick's 30, a rare release from the year 1970, the first show that I recorded 1/3/70. I was disappointed, but managed to get one on a record/cd selling site. I paid double, but I still saved $$$, as I do not want to purchase a "subscription" to the daves picks yearly releases, as I am primarily interested in obtaining music from the 1966-1970 period, and not many releases are from these years. I guess I could always buy a subscription, and then sell off the unwanted items on another site for a profit, which is what this concept does, encourages a "black market". I do not consider this to be "progressive" in the least. I would rather purchase through GDCORP, as I have in the past, but if GDCORP wants to encourage this type of atmosphere, I am forced to participate in order to get what I want, and I am grateful to the sellers who have made it possible to get what I want. But it sure seems contrary to what Jerry's idea of business was.

Hey there! I work for a Farm Craft Brewery in Virginia and we recently got accepted to have taps at the Lockn Music Festival this year. I have created a piece of art that combines our logo and labeling with a Stealie and would love to get it made into shirts for our team and possibly release a small barrel batch of bear grateful dead themed. We of course need right to use the Stealie and want to do things right! Could you please point us in the right direction of making this happen?!

on the right hand side of the Shows and Lyrics page (http://www.dead.net/showsandlyrics) you can look at shows by year, venue, etc. Each show's page has a little clickbox that says Mark as Attended. Click that, and you'll be marked as having attended that show. My problem is that after about 1990 it's all a blur and i wish i'd kept better records!

I wasn't around when these decisions were made, and generally speaking I don't have a technical clue beyond basic html anyway, but I think for the moment Drupal is the hand we're dealt and the world in which we're operating. Though I will pass along your recommendation!

No big deal, I've been told that the vbulletin is easier than HTML, but still has hard corners with . Plus there is a vb language. I've been in the many different Subaru community forums for roughly 10 years plus. Never been an administrator or nothing tho. I have my own website, and I hate HTML! Sorry, only if alignments were easier I wouldn't complain! I use a WYSIWYG editor anyways so I keep it simple. Thanks for your hard work!!! Frankly asked that very question elsewhere a few days ago. On someone else's page you can send them a message or block messages from them. Basically it makes no sense to have a send private message to yourself link so there isn't one, but logically, blocking messages from yourself, which you CAN do, makes no more sense. So if we learn anything about that oddity we'll report back.

It's been a while since I last logged into the forum here but regularly check the sight for any new news. Seems now should be the time for the next CD or DVD release. Any news or are we stuck having to wait several months with nothing new offered up? Road Trips was nice but it took an eternity to be released. Without a doubt, there are many live multi-track tapes, matrix/board mixes and video footage of shows to be able to release them quarterly at the very least for many many years to come. Anything new?

I have a question....Was anyone at the 1st show at the JFK in Philly 76 with Yes,Peter Framton and Gary wright!! Do you remember the food fight?? One fifty thousand people throwing something at the same time. It was the biggest food fight ever!! My friend and I were on the field and hid under a blanket ( no help) I was hit with a frisbee in the head, then a whole water melon smashed right in front of us!! Holy shit, we peeked out from the blanket and saw sandwiches flying, coolers and beers in flight!! It would be cool to see a you tube of this!! It was insane!!!!!!!! Just wondering if anyone was there too!!

hi .no i was not at this show..but i was in 1977 at another show.it was in germany and the band was not GD but the jefferson starship.should have been the first gig on the european continent since 68.it could have been the greatest outdoor venue i ever went too.the party began the day before, went on allnite long and than everybody went to see Grace and the boys.the vibes where great, until the moment when bill thompson together with craig declared that the concert was over because gracie was drunk so she could not even move.in that moment pure hell broke loose, and believe me there were no frisbees and watermelons launched.there where fewer people (15000) but the stuff thrown was definitely heavier and harder.I really feared for my live...all the starships equipment was destroyed, burned or looted.so was the site.i think they never recovered from that blow:-((..and all because off a bottle at the wrong time in the wrong hands!!!still love this band anyway and everytime i listen to grace, chills go down my spine....peace fellas and stay sober

Not sure what the protocol is here. The Warfield 10/9/80 Vine seems to have died. It was sent to GratefulGooner on Feb 27 and nobody's seen or heard from him since. We have his address, but his phone is unlisted. I don't want to trash the guy, if he has a good excuse & is Planning on getting the vine back on track, but how long is too long? When do we tag him with the moniker Vinekiller?

Who knows what is up? Maybe illness etc., there have been some pretty good viners here that disappeared for a while and then come back. Vinekiller moniker may be premature Someone could restart the vine. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

No idea if this is the proper forum...i received Winterland and was so looking forward to listening to it on my laptop.but when i inserted it into the drive, it spinned a couple times and that's it. tried opening it with itunes, winamp, wmp, and EAC - all with the same results. it plays fine in my car and my work laptop. i thought it had to do with HDCD, but then i put in 'stepping out', also HDCD, and that played fine. i'm able to burn, rip, and liste to other cd's. any help would make feel loved. thanks

How come you guys don't have The Schwag listed on your site in the "other bands" section? They keep the vibe alive and turn on more people to your music than anyone. I thought the dead were gothic before I went to this little festival in the woods called "Schwagstock" and my life changed. I am not alone. Deadheads need to catch one of their shows/festivals. JGB with Melvin Seals play there occasionally.

I apologize if this is the wrong thread to ask this in, but does anybody know what's up with the official Jerry site? It seems to be pretty much abandoned these days. No new DVD or CD releases whatsoever. In fact, there's nothing new at all on that site. I think it shows an enormous amount of disrespect to Jerry to do nothing with that site and the huge catalog of his music that's sitting in the vault. Anybody have any ideas?
