Went w/ the 4/16 show myself, but it ain't easy, too many great shows.

I will go on record as saying that 5/11/72 is my choice for THE show of the tour. But THERE ARE SO MANY GREAT SHOWS IN THERE. 5/10 5/26 4/24 4/29 etc etc etc. this is a good idea, ptb. the perfect thing to do while I eat my lunch (besides listening to GD.)

this was fun! march madness for heads. just like 4/20 @ the movies, is is a great idea. how bout doin it every march with the greatest tours of all time, like spring 77, summer 89, spring 90, early 71, summer 80 to name a few

This was based on setlists and recollections of the shows. I don't think I'll revote, but I'll refresh my memories of the shows on the way to Cleveland in a few weeks. It should be some Road Trip!

...4-7, 4-24, 5-3, 5-11, 5-13, 5-26. This was fun - completely subjective, but fun. I agree with the idea of bracketing the best regarded tours every March!

Copenhagen 4/17for Dark Star/Sugar Mag/Caution/Johnny B Good as well as China Cat/Rider Truckin and Bobby McGee. But there are so many good shows. Close behind for me are Frankfurt, Lille, Luxembourg and all of the Lyceum shows.

1. Copenhagen 4/14/72 -- long one of my favorite shows of any era. amazing dark star jam, and rest of that jam/set is in a word -- spectacular 2. Paris, 5/3/72 -- wonderful energy and playing throughout the shoe, truckin other one bobby mcgee phil jam 3.4/26/72 "Hundred Year Hall" -- PITB, Lovelight, Caution another spectacular, high energy and virtually flawless jam Ok the rest is not quite up to that

The Southwest bracket is the most difficult bracket to chose. Ha. This is fun. I changed my winner about four times now. They were 5.10 then 4.17, 5.26 and finally 4.26. I guess i settled on HYH simply because of Pigpen. Here you have outstanding versions of Lovelight, Stranger, Lovin. Also one of my fav Truckin from the tour and a sweet Comes a time.

I always thought the ideal Dead "single" would be the Live Dead "Dark Star" b/w the Hundred Year Hall "Other One"... Issued on 33 1/3 in late 1972, it seems to me it woulda had the potential to transform some people's peceptions of the Dead, JMO.

I went for Hamburg. Something just different about that show that I can't put my finger on. A shorter show that was more to the point and a different playlist, perhaps.

Everyone always forgets Luxembourg. This is one of my all time favorite shows. It's to the point and some great jamming.

The Award for the Understatement of the Tour goes to the stage talk before Black Throated Wind on 4/26: Bob- "We're gonna be doing a lot of songs that you may not have heard for the first part of the show." Jerry- "That's all right, they're all pretty good."

that 5/10/72 show really surprised me when I heard it. It is a monster.

Not in a particular order but here I go..... 03May72 Paris The first Paris show is the one for me but both are pretty dangerous 08Apr72 Wembley Pool London Boy, I thought the show on the 7th rocked but this one is a freakin' barn-burner And last but not forgotten by me 13May72 Lille France The Free Concert This is the show ALOT of people are not mentioning but gets my vote for the Best Kick-Ass/Dark Horse/Long-Shot/Underdog Overlooked Favorite. The first 30 minutes or so are up-and-down but then the band "Locks in" like a early 1970's American muscle car in overdrive! The Truckin>Drums>Other One>He's Gone and the Sugar Mag>NFA>>GDTRFB> NFA is mind-boggling! The Lille Show has the VERY BEST One More Saturday Night I have ever heard.

Can anyone tell me which show on the Europe '72 Tour was the one that The Grateful Dead (except for Billy the K.) wore the Bozo masks for the entire performance?Thanks!

The "Bozo Masks" were worn on Apr 17 for a few numbers for TV. Which brings up the question of: Why does the cover of Apr 14 feature art w/ the bozo mask instead of Apr 17 when they were worn for that show? Just wondering...also, if you go to youtube you can see the entire TV from the Tivoli performance.....

It looks like Bobby's funny mask is on the cover art for the Lille show as well. That looks like Phil's (and Jerry's?) funny mask on the 4-17 show.

Sorry to pollute this thread, but since it is a Europe '72 promotion I thought maybe I'd get some help or attention. I had a lot of fun with the 30 days of the Dead promotion but they never sent my prize. I have e-mailed politely and have been completely ignored. It's really a matter of principle at this point, because it is just a Europe '72 t-shirt but I was excited to give it to a friend for Xmas who loves that era. I buy a lot here so please don't flame me for whining about a freebie. I'm just wondering if someone has a suggestion or encountered that problem as well. Thanks and peace.

How Does this game work, it is frustrating. My favorite shows were Olympia and Amsterdam. Looks like you are trying to go sell out all of your old live stuff.

4/14 vs 4/24 4/14 takes it! Everybody has their favorites but for some reason these two stand out for me. Both have crazy Dark Stars- but 4/14's disc three is unbelievable- between the Jamming on Dark Star and Pig's energy on Good Lovin and Caution I think it beats out 4/24 but not by much. I was surprised because I heard so much about Paris, but I just didn't think it had that something (I am sure I will find it with repeated listening!).

A fine problem to have, choosing between these two. 4/24's Dark Star takes it for me (maybe my very favorite), but then 4/14's Caution is hard to beat ~ I never thought 2/14/70 could be usurped from its throne, but 4/14 is a worthy contender, indeed. 4/24, with a long head start on my heart as Rockin' at the Rhein, still carries more sentimental value at this point.... But 4/14 has seen more play than any other show in my steamer (well, the one that's actually the property of Gentle Jack Jones), and it's been my taster's choice for several visiting friends....not to mention the DVD I've had for a few years.....so it may be gaining there, too. Sigh......I'll just have to listen to each of them again...... [well, and 4/17, which I'm obviously mixing up with the other Tivoli.....ok, I'll play them all THREE again....]

Tie: 4/8 , 5/25 ( another great underrated show,probably the best Brown Eyed Women i've heard!) 5. 5/18 .... next week maybe we can rate The Other One ?! Later folks......

May 26 Strand Lyceum London OK its in chrono order, but IMO these are the best shows and I am ready to defend! However, I do dig everyone's choices. We all have different frames of reference. Is there a better Dew than Barton on May 8 '77? Please help. I am putting together a collection of them for a compilation, kind of like grayfolded was for Star. Bless the Dead and the Heads!

I personally like the year 1973 for morning dew and think the barton hall is a little bit overrated. You can't go wrong with 2/28/73- DP 28, 11/30 and 12/1/73- DP14, 11/19/73 DP19, 8/1/73 Roosevelt Stadium, 9/21/72 DP 36, 12/31/76 Cow Palace, 9/7/77 Winterland.

You are all listening to these without the context...I was there for first night, Newcastle, Bickershaw and last 2 nights at Lyceum. I saw them in 1970 (Newcastle under Lyme...not the same Newcastle!), Winterland 1975 and London in the late 80's...all downhill after 72 I'm afraid.The Newcastle City Hall ( my hometown, so it was very special) was stella...we were a more "listening"audience then the Dead were used to , more like a jazz or classical audience...Bobby thought we were the coldest audience he had ever played to. I was there, I heard them (not on digital disc!)...they were great, but then setting is all! Hometown! By the way read the cd liner notes...I was one of the locals who helped pack the gear up after the gig...yes, "Geordies" do have a strong accent. We had talked to them before the gig in The City Tavern a pub nearby where they went for a meal. I reminded Jerry of this when I talked to him briefly at the Great American Music Hall in 1975 when I saw him with Merl, Kahn and Vitt...he said he remembered...yeah, I'm sure...a gentleman to the last! Where have the last 40 years gone? Gann canny bonny lads!
