..even a blind man knows when the sun is shinin'...you can feel it!..
It's made of solid bronze,
It's made of solid bronze, there were also some made in the mid 90's that were solid silver. Moon face buckles were made in solid silver in two separate sizes. I have the small silver moon face, and a bronze Steal-ee. Both of the buckles I purchased from AOS3's hand on different occasions after getting to know him through his then secretary/assistant who I met working the GreenPeace tables. AOS3 did NOT number the buckles after about '93, though I may be off by a year or two. There are two Steel-ee buckle castings, one has a small round bump under the face's jaw at the bottom of the buckle, the other is smooth. There is also a large, probably 11 inches in diameter, bronze Steel-ee door/wall plaque, way too spendy for this swinger. It has considerable weight (get it, "weight")?. There was one hanging on Merle Saunders' front door in SF. There are also two sculptures based on planetary concept, I believe Mercury and Pluto, though I may be wrong about Pluto. They are sculptures of the planets in human form. An un-numbered buckle does not mean a fake, in fact I've never heard of there ever being a fake, it would be pretty obvious from the signature and writing on the back which are engraved by hand and not cast into the mold. There is a copyright C followed by OS with a symbol underneath that and a uppercase T. AOS3's fingerprint is visible in the blackening on the bronze above the /GDP, (pretty hard to recreate) pressed into the soft mold. AOS3 learned metal sculpture while serving 2 years in federal prison for selling manufacturing and selling LSD. Go figure. He created the Steal-ee to mark the different sound equipment that he owned that traveled with the Dead. It was modeled after a round public transportation sign in the Bay Area that was a circle split diagonally by a white line, orange on top, blue on the bottom. AOS3 described what he wanted and a spray paint stencil was made and all amps, tool boxes etc were marked with a circle and a lightning bolt, the skull came just a little bit later. Recently a friend got in touch with AOS3 and inquired about a buckle, the response was that it would cost him $5000.00. That was straight from AOS3's mouth, so my guess is there aren't any more and he would have had to cast a new lot, (get it, "lot"?) or it was his way of saying NO. Whatever the case my buckles serve as an animate link to the days that molded me and made me who I am today, and AOS3 and his art and science were a huge part of that. Peace and Release, pate88
