This was a great show! I
This was a great show! I seem to remember Jerry playing the Close Encounters theme during space...
Magical evening
This truely so a great show and I think that the dead was the first show at this venue. I remember walking around and noticing that the parking lot was spotless. I couldn"t even find a cigarette butt on the ground. You are correct msirilla, Jerry did play a little Close Encounters here, and expanded on it at the next show at Alpine Valley.
I've always thought that
I've always thought that close encounters from this show marked the begining of the break out of old nuggets,we bid you goodnight, death don't, Help>slip> Attics Dark Star... I guess Jerry must have downloaded some info from the aliens this night.
Very very good
Very very good show...welcome to the corn fields of Indiana. Partied on the lawn with some locals who had no idea who the Dead were.
Gorgeous Night where my instincts were confirmed
Good not find vitamins coming in,. I trusted a woman I was getting to know who to this day remains one of my greatest friends. Alison will provide I told myself. Alison will provide and so she does. I got the sense halfway into the first set that I was untouchable. I had a force field that none could break. That force field would get me into the shed from the hill. During break my wife did not touch me and possibly break the force field. Second set I slid right by security. They could not touch me. That We Can Run really got me. The Stella was just awesome. Afterwards, a virgin who had come with us asked me the time. I looked at my watch and said "Eleven, but ten minutes ago, was it ten till eleven, I don't think so." That whole transcendence of time and space that was available at shows just shined. Got to the car and waiting for the crew, Alison, ever cheery says, "hey anybody want some Chocolate milk". Chocolate milk !! YES.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
quite possibly the best of all venues
the sweetest spot for so many reasons
clueless to Deaddom
I loved this first time in Deer Creek almost more than any other because the locals and the venue had no idea what the Dead were all about. So it was kind of like a holiday. You could relax and enjoy the day in the midwest without any hassles. It's too bad that the word got out in years to come culminating with the 95' gate crashing scene. I went here the first few years because it was super cool and chill. Plus the band always ripped it here. This was a diamond in the rough, and part of that was that it just got added on to the tour a week or two before it went down. So that made it interesting. I remember not having a ticket for this show because there was no mail order. So we got one in the local Indianapolis newspaper the day of the show. Went to this guys office to pick them up. Great seats right in front of the board. Deer Creek was definitely a great place to see the Dead.
The bus came by
This show was my first long distance trip to see any band. Traveled from Ct. to this and Alpine. Still so inexperienced i didnt even have a tent to sleep in. This show was amazing. Perfect combo of location and music with the added excitement of being so far from home. I remember during truckin when the "new york" line came up there was little crowd response (compared to the usual roar on the east coast). For me that was a magic moment. Close encounters also blew my mind. This could be a DVD release anytime. "Music is the best" - FZ
First trip to see the Dead
First trip to see the Dead in my "new" '67 Split window camper. Yes, Mine is the white one with the walk thru option.Drove overnight blowing a generator pulley but lucky me had a spare with. Got to the place on the map that said "Deer Creek" and there was an older Gentleman sitting in a rocker sayin "sorry boy's" "must of been a couple hundred of you by today" " need to go to Indy" Drive towards indy and it seemed like it was a traffic jam of bus's heading north. We kept waving to the other heads to turn around until I had a Indianapolis State boy on my tail. I will never forget the view from behind of the cop and Micro buses as far as I could see following me! But what a show!
Yeah, I remember the Close
Yeah, I remember the Close Encounters space and Candace Brightman's light show that made it seem like we were about to be sucked up into alien spacecraft.
My first "China Doll" and even though Jerry flubbed the best line, it was pretty sweet. Only flaw was some Indiana redneck security dude on my aisle who decided to punch out a kid who was dancing a little too far into the aisle.
This was 1989 and the Dead had come off a troublesome spring tour and there were lots of precautions. I remember seeing a full-size paddy wagon sitting outside the amphitheatre on the way, ominously empty. There wasn't supposed to be any vending but there was although not as full-blown as in other places. I just felt a weird vibe like the Indiana cops were just eager and ready to do some bustin' but it never happened. it was really a sweet scene all around and the Dead ended up coming back every year without incident until '95 when it all went wrong.
My Sister's First and Only
My oldest sister (10 years older than me) is the one that turned me onto the Dead. My next oldest (8 years older than me) sister never listened to them. So I took her to Deer Creek. She was so excited that she kept talking about Jerry Weir and Bob Garcia. Not out of ignorance, out of excitement. My sister's and I have always been close. This brought us even closer.
Didn't notice
My most vivid memory from this show was the how incredible the Bird Song jam was to end the first set. Checking the recording later confirmed my memory. Unfortunately the recording also revealed just how thoroughly they muffed Crazy Fingers, something I definitely DIDN'T notice at the time!
