The Worst Show I've Been To!
Louis S Herkaloit seemed liked the Dead did not want to be there! drove from NJ to Harrisburg. had to cross that long bridge on foot across the Susquhan. River to get to City Island. was a nice, small outdoor venue! there was problems with the Dead from the start! they had a lot of equipment problems. Bobby's strings kept breaking etc. the 1st set was cut REAL short! bob got on the micropphone & said they were going to take a short break. many thought they were going to get the problems fixed & finish the 1st set! after a long wait, the Dead reappeared, played a short 2nd set & left!! then we had to cross that long bridge again, people mooing, because you were like cattle being herded!
I'm new...
...to this site. I remember this concert well. The trip from Connecticut was more fun than the show itself. I agree with vern...but, the trip up to SPAC the next day to watch them in the rain was fun!
Was This The Mud Show?
At one of the City Island shows (I can't remember whether it was 83 or 84) my friend Mike and I were disgusted with the fact that there was no water available to the crowd except expensive bottled water... so we initiated a little guerrilla action and disconnected the hoses running to several of the concession stands. Before they got them hooked back up, we had gotten a lot of Dead Heads nice and wet, and turned the dusty field into a slippin' slidin' mud party, much improving the whole vibe. :)
Trip across the bridge.
It was a trip crossing that bridge ( like a herd of hippies)!!
striking setting
i cant disagree more with the negative comments. this setting was outstanding the stage with the background of the pennsylvania state capitol building, the rising moon and the swarming insect magnified by the stage lighting was breathtaking. yea there were some obstacles, but it was a venue that rare and different.
adc
my 2nd show
I DO remember being on Phils side, He was burning a FATTIE during near mid first set..That I recall, and the HASSLES of Harrisburg City Islands failure to accomodate the Dead Heads. Also people diving in & swimming out the river to get on City Island. Good times, Ok show.
home again
Not nearly as good as 83,the trick was to go on the island the day before and bury all the good shit, just dig it up the next day, always had cold beer;)
not all that great as in '83
This 1984 gig at City Island, Harrisburg, just wasn't as much fun as the 1983 show for me. The band just didn't seem all gung-ho about playing there, either.Just my two cents.
Worst Show, Were You High?!!
.. that effin show was 80's pinnacle for me.. they came off the Toronto Seva benefit show broadcast on national FM radio, roll into that state capitol hellhole island, everybody's wasted.. We hazed PA Governor Dick Thornburgh walking around the sidewalk outside the island. With his wife, yelled thru the car window ‘…'Dick Thornburg before he dicks you!!' we were totally hammered driving from Philly ...I was 20 years old, about 10 rows stage left, in front of the worlds best keyboard player and my personal inspiration! shining bright... oh sorry.. it was hot and humid.. Music into Don't Cheese Me was effin incredible to end 1st set ... Touch into Estimated was mind blowing .. GDRFB--> Saturday Night was effin' Grateful Dead 1980's to the hilt.. the antithesis of MTV shit... I relish that show man, if anyone has a copy, even cassette, glab19403@yahoo.com.. Thanks bro's
long trip
ok - I lost our tickets and we had another couple riding with us! We were starting from central ny, so it wasn't that far...but we couldn't leave without our tickets. Our friends got so pissed at us - they left - hitching 7 long story short when we finally got there - they had beat us! We were in another state of mind upon arrival into that freaky, dirty, nuke city..parked by a railroad yard, near a psych hospital...............very freaky night and some amazing music in our memories:)
great place very laid back
great place very laid back and trippy!!!
Warm-up for Toga.
Sorry 5-4-81spectrum, they were going through the motions on this night. Like they lost a bet or something and had to do it. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed myself and there were some interesting high lights. After Truckin, there was a Spoonful tease. At the end of Black Peter, Jerry kept repeating,"run and see, run and see". Then Bobby joined him for the last couple. Ive never heard that before. Nice touch. Now that I think about it, it was very laid back at Harrisburg. Maybe we were all resting up for the lunacy that was Saratoga the following night.
wicked space
thats what i remember from this show ,a really wild space drums ,and the folks that gave me a ride back to n.j after
Dixie
Either I was REALLY high or I could swear that in the first set, between which songs I cannot remember, that the band picked Dixie. I thought the show was okay and remember it well as I had to drive from Harrisburg back to Hamden, CT to graduate high school the next day and then on to Saratoga for the next show. We drank cans of Becks that my buddy Rob's dad had given us as a graduation gift. Lots of driving that week. Leo
First bad one....
This show has the dubious honor of my first "bad" show. It was probably my 15th show, and I was 16 years old. Up until then I had never really experienced an "off" night and this was one, for sure. The venue I was actually really cool, and if I remember properly Phil wore a lab coat, due to its proximity to 3 mile island. (I could be mistaken about that, but it's in my head as having happened...)
As I started to go to more and more shows, I obviously became more versed in good shows and not so good shows, and I began to tell when the band was happy and when they weren't. I was kind of blown away that I wasn't blown away.... I mean, look at the set list. The whole thing was just mailed in. Every easy song was played with absolutely no enthusiasm at all. HOWEVER:
30 years later I'm here to tell you that a "bad" Dead show sure beats most good days most other places. I miss those summer tours; and we all know what happened the following evening at SPAC... Magic, as always.
Those of use who were lucky enough to see shows before the wheels fell off all together, are very lucky. There were some really good shows between 83-88, even if the band wasn't in the best shape of their lives. I miss Jerry & Brent. They were remarkable talents taken too young by evil mechanisms that they implemented themselves. I wonder what would have happened had they lived?
The Dustbowl and Sleeping by the Susquehanna River!!
This was a really fun trip. Out of the 100 or so shows it was not great musically but there were a lot of various memories - the equipment problems; The dust was incredible - just covered head to toe in it dancing like crazy but had to leave that area to get out of the dust! Couldn't breathe! The walk across the bridge was fun and interesting and yes, I remember the mooing!! That night camped out by the river I kept reciting the Abbot and Costello routine about the Susquehanna Hat company. Fun crew down there laughing like crazy. The trip the next day to SPAC was great and a great show. Totally opposite - it rained incredibly!! "I don't think the hard stuff is gonna come down for a bit". Dancin in the rain to Satisfaction.
after Esau
IDK, seems like something happened after Esau and I just love the part of the show that follows! It got bright
