Hello, dear friends -
It's been insane summer and fall - a great musical year even though I played fewer gigs than usual. I had some really fine festival opportunities and I got to play with some amazing musicians. All bodes well for next year, for sure.
I spent some time in the studio in August with Tim Carbone producing and several of his wonderful compatriots playing on the sessions. We completed six songs to add to the four we did in January, and we feel these ten songs add up to a solid CD. Now comes the immense challenge of getting it to market. More on that as things develop.
As I mentioned in an earlier missive, I went to work for Sirius Satellite Radio's Grateful Dead Channel starting in mid-July, and that exciting project hit the geosynchronous airwaves on September 8. I've been responsible for five complete shows and an interview every week, plus contributing to the general tweaking of the playlist and other issues. Were all very happy with our progress and the channel seems to be pleasing the listeners, too. If you want to give Sirius a try (if you're not interested in the GD channel, they've got tons of other programming), you can get a green three-day online trial by visiting http://www.sirius.com/gratefuldead and clicking on the big red FREE 3 DAY TRIAL link.
In other non-musical news, I am having my very first photo exhibition ever! And even better, it's a joint show with my wife, Rita Hurault. We're calling it WATER TEXTURES, and it will be up for the entire month of January at the Nomad Cafe, 500 Shattuck Ave. (at 65th St.) in Oakland.
I perform there a couple of times a year, too - it's an award-winning zero-waste business and a fun place to hang out and to play music. http://www.nomadcafe.net/
Now, to the GIGS. There aren't a lot of 'em on the calendar for the rest of the year, but every one is something I look forward to with great excitement.
Tomorrow morning it's the Grand Lake Farmers' Market, right down the hill from our home. This was supposed to be a "Dead jam," but I lost a key player at the last minute, so we're hoping to reschedule that one for November 24. It'll be "solo electric" DG tomorrow, and I plan to ply my new song "The Bounty of the County" at least twice. The song, too, is a collaboration with Rita, the produce maven in the family; I wrote it for a September 15 appearance on West Coast Live, and it has been very well received by producer v=growers, sellers, and consumers all around the world!
Tuesday I fly east to play two shows with Ollabelle. The first, Friday 11/16, also involved Catherine Russell, Larry Campbell, Jim Lauderdale, and I'm not sure who else - we're collectively known as the American Beauty Project, and we're performing as part of the Unbroken Chain symposium at UMass Amherst. Details below.
Then on Saturday 11/17, I'll be opening a show at the Highline Ballroom in New York City for Ollabelle and Donna the Buffalo - two great American bands! And it's a benefit for the Rex Foundation.
After I return home, I get to open for Hot Buttered Rum at 19 Broadway in Fairfax CA on 11/24 and for the legendary Billy C Farlow at the Ashkenaz in Berkeley on 12/14!
As always, details and more links can be found on my site, http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html - and late additions to the calendar, too.
I hope to see you at one or more of these events, and I beg you to please SPREAD THE WORD!!!

we used to raid back yard plum trees, and neighbor next door had a pear tree, i would get on our garage roof and gorge, not that this has anything to do with David!.... unless he has such trees in his backyard?
We have two lemon trees that have ripe fruit every single day of the year. It's a wonderful thing! And a fig tree that yields a nice crop around late August.
My wife is the produce expert in the family, but it seems to me we're right in the heart of stone fruit season. peaches, apricots; nectarines and pluots and other cool hybrids.

The figs here are ripe august also, lemons are on trees most of the year, not many now as it is too hot, a local variety of pear just coming into season, plums in sesaon, mulbeeries
all growing wild in the countryside

My new CD, The Ones That Look the Weirdest Taste the Best, is finally here! I am working on the web site - for now you'll find cover art, audio samples, track info, etc. on my blog and on CDBaby.
Produced by Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth, mastered in HDCD by Joe Gastwirt.

Nice to read you did some work with Railroad Earth. Andy Goessling and I went to HS together, and he played at my wedding. He and Carbone have been cutting it up since the late-70s with The Blue Sparks from Hell. I was fortunate to catch RRE at the UpNorth Festival here in Maine this past summer. It was good to see Andy. Ratdog, the Wailers, and bunch of other notables were in attendance...
Anyway, nice to hear you're mixing it up with some old friends of mine - the world just got smaller.

Andy is the MVP of this project! Here's what he contributed to ten tracks: autoharp, banjo, acoustic guitar, ukulele, clarinet, bass clarinet, 12-string guitar, National steel guitar, baritone saxophone, background vocals
I love that guy!

Hello, friends -
This is a gigspam message with some extra stuff in it.
It's been a busy and musically rewarding summer despite the weird and somewhat depressing state of the music business. Although gasoline prices have come down from their alarming peaks of last summer, the cost-benefit analysis of doing club dates is not terribly encouraging, so I have largely stuck to the festival gigs rather than strings of one-nighters. I passed up an opportunity to play A Bear's Picnic for the third year in a row in order to spend my wife's birthday with her in one of her favorites places: Point Reyes National Seashore. I had a fine time at Grateful Fest (Nelson Ledges, Ohio) and Gathering of the Vibes (Bridgeport, Connecticut), and I've been playing a lot in the Bay Area in various solo and ensemble configurations. And Rubber Souldiers have had some swell times, too, in between the Rowan Brothers' and my own musical commitments. We are gearing up for more adventures with our "Beatles jam band," including a return to MagnoliaFest in October and (we hope) more touring in 2010.
In September I will play Schwagstock, my second appearance at Camp Zoe (Missouri) this year; October will see my much-anticipated (by me!) debut at Shakori Hills in Pittsboro, North Carolina - hosted by the wonderful band Donna the Buffalo. I'll tour in the east between Shakori Hills and Magnolia Fest; I am hoping to fill in the mid-October stretch with performances in several southeastern towns I've been missing for way too long; I've already got 10/20 confirmed in Cullman, Alabama, and I am working on other possibilities in the region. I'll post the gigs a http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html as they're confirmed.
Okay, now here's the "extra stuff." On June 21, my longtime friend and musical partner Alan Feldstein died at home from a heart attack. The news hit our old Berkeley crowd hard; to me, it feels like a major thread of my life's tapestry has been yanked out. Al and I had what you might call a tumultuous relationship over the years; his wife, Caryn, told me recently she called me "Al's other wife" - undoubtedly because we fought like a married couple a lot! But we made a lot of music together, and I have been laughing and crying through an extensive audio archive of our history since we got the news.
Our friendship and musical relationship began when I moved to Berkeley in 1973. We bonded over Grateful Dead music but shared a love for many styles, and we played each other's original music in various bands, most notably The Reptiles, off and on for more than thirty years. Many of the highest moments of my life had Al in 'em, and I'm having a hard time getting used to the idea that we won't have any more.
You can read about Al, hear some of the music we made together, and see some of his own words from online posts, on my blog - http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/archives/tag/al-feldstein - and I would especially like to direct your attention to the comments section of this post, http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/archives/2056 , where several dozen others who loved Al Feldstein have shared their thoughts and stories.
You might also enjoy looking at these photos from our mutual history: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dgans/sets/72157621957950690/ and, from Rich Burgdorf, http://www.flickr.com/photos/18362510@N03
We're getting the old band, and gang, together in Al's memory on Friday, September 4, at the Starry Plough in Berkeley. I've been performing two of Al's six Reptile originals for several years, and I am working up the other four because I can't imagine not playing them ever again. Anyone who attends the four solo shows I'm doing in the next week and a half (details below) will hear these works-in-progress.

can't wait to see ya at Schwagstock!!!!
"In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head.
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul."
Well, that was an unexpected turn of events!
Short version: On Thursday morning, August 27, I had what proved to be a "mild to moderate" heart attack in Lee Vining CA (out near Mono Lake) on my way out into the desert. I got myself to Carson City and lucked into a brand new hospital with a state-of-the-art cath lab. I had the best possible treatment at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, came home on Sunday, and I am resting comfortably at home under the loving care of my beautiful hippie bride, Rita Hurault.
Here's the full story: http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/archives/2544 - I've heard from lots of people that this tale has inspired them to pay more attention to their own habits and health status; if I have inspired anyone to take steps to protect their own future, then the whole thing will have been worth it. I hope you'll pass that URL along to others who may find it useful.
I am following my doctors' instructions, and taking it very easy for the next few days. But I am cleared to play the Al Feldstein memorial Reptiles reunion at the Starry Plough on Friday, and to resume my performing schedule and daily bike rides in the very near future.
Here's the schedule. I'm still filling dates for the southwest tour that begins at Shakori Hills and ends at Magfest, and the November dates out here with Boris Garcia are just now beginning to be firmed up. So please stay tuned to http://www.dgans.com/gigslhtml for the latest details.
I have received hundreds and hundreds of kind thoughts, well-wishes, prayers, stories, and bits of advice since the news hit of my cardiac calamity; I can't begin to tell you how much I have benefited from your warmth. I thank you from the bottom of my reconditioned heart.
(And I am hoping to reschedule my trip to the Mountain Time Zone. My itinerary included lots of time off to look at the rocks and get my awe on, and I can't wait to get back out there and finish the trip!)
The plan as it stands today:
Friday, September 4: Reptile reunion in memory of Al Feldstein. Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley CA

Great to see you live! It was a great Sunday night in Dolores. Really enjoyed the opportunity and was happy you were back for some live music @ our quaint little pub. Hope you enjoyed the Dolores hospitality.
.....And there were days I know when all we ever wanted was to learn and love and grow.
Let's begin with a very upbeat health update!
I rode my bike to my cardiologist yesterday. My blood pressure and heart rate are "excellent." Cutting my beta-blocker dose in half did the trick. My EKG is still abnormal, but in the expected way, and headed back toward normal. As Bob Dylan sang, "You can always go back, but you can't go back all the way" - and it may never return all the way to "normal." But I'm doing fine. I still have to carry nitroglycerin, but it seems highly unlikely I'll ever need to use it.
And as you can see, I'm ready, willing and able to make music, starting almost immediately!

I am about to release a new studio recording titled "Life Is a Jam." I was joined on this session by Mark Karan (Ratdog, Jemimah Puddleduck) on lead guitar; Mookie Siegel (David Nelson Band) on keyboards; Joe Kyle, Jr. (The Waybacks) on bass; Dave Brogan (ALO) on drums; and Zac Matthews (Hot Buttered Rum) and Bear Kittay on background vocals.
There are three takes of the song, each followed by a unique jam. It's being released as a download later in the month; right now I'm selling a limited edition CD to help recover the costs of getting it released. Please check out http://www.dgans.com/liaj for more info and to order a CD.

I'm about to get on a plane for North Carolina, where I'll play two festivals, four club dates, and my good pal Mark van Allen's wedding bash - can't wait!
In May, I go to the southwest for a short run of shows that ends Memorial Day weekend at the Desert Rocks Music Festival in Moab, Utah. And while I'm there, on Sunday, May 30, I will be participating in a guided bike tour of the Moab area sponsored by Rock the Earth (rocktheearth.org). Details haven't been posted yet; stay tuned.
I'm hoping to add a gig or two to my Ohio trip in early July. If you have an Ohio venue in mind, or if you're interested in hosting a house concert, please get in touch.
Anyway, here's a complete list of confirmed gigs as it stands today. Details, links, and more info at http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html - and new performances are being added to the schedule as they're confirmed.

Greetings! I'm in the final stages of preparing for a major East Coast tour. First stop is Gathering of the Vibe in Bridgeport, Connecticut - a wonderful family reunion of several generations of Deadheads and other kind folks.
I've added a couple of new items to the schedule - on this tour and later in the year - including a house concert in Maine next week, two more Rubber Souldiers shows, and more.
As always, I'm in the market for house concert opportunities. If you see an open spot on my schedule in your general vicinity, let's try to make something happen! And remember: word of mouth is pretty much all we have these days, so if you like my music, please spread the word about these gigs and these recordings - the free ones as well as the for-sale ones.
My performance schedule is posted at http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html
CDs are available at http://www.cdaby.com/all/dgans

Time for another update!
My new studio CD, The Ones That Look the Weirdest Taste the Best, is being played on radio stations all over the country. Our promotional campaign is just getting started - you can help with this effort by calling your local station and asking for it!
The web page, designed by my friend and sometime musical partner Eric Rawlins, is up and humming at dgans.com/weirdest - cover art, lyrics, reviews, ordering information, all that good stuff.
Rubber Souldiers - the "Beatles jam band" with Chris Rowan, Lorin Rowan, and me - will sing one song at the Rex Foundation benefit in San Francisco this Saturday. Big brother Peter Rowan is the headliner, and Chris and Lorin have graciously invited me to share their guest spot to show off our fun new band. The event takes place in the Grand Ballroom of the Regency Center in San Francisco. Lots more info at rexfoundation.org - see you there!
We've got a rudimentary web site up for the band - rubbersouldiers.com - and we're making plans to play lots of gigs in the new year.
And now, the GIG SPAM! More information, links to the venues, etc. always up to date at dgans.com/gigs.html
