Road Trips Volume 3 Number 1

    Oakland, 12/28/79

The latest installment in our Road Trips series, now entering its third big year (and ninth release overall) is bound to become a favorite. Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 1 is the complete show from December 28, 1979, part of the sparkling run that has already given us the excellent Dick’s Picks: Vol. 5 (from 12/26/79). You’ll recall that these year-end concerts, held at the Oakland Auditorium because Winterland had closed down for good the previous New Year’s Eve, were the first holiday shows featuring new keyboardist Brent Mydland, who joined the band in April 1979.

The new lineup had been gaining momentum with each passing tour since that spring, and by December was truly hitting its stride. It helped, too, that the band was in the midst of recording their Go To Heaven album, so they were really playing together a lot during this period. This 12/28/79 concert is a blast: a super high-energy rock and roll show that also has its share of spacey jams and exploratory passages. The first set includes standout versions of “Sugaree,” “High Time” (rare enough that it always felt like a treat!) and “The Music Never Stopped,” while the second set opens with the always potent pair of “Alabama Getaway” > “Greatest Story Ever Told,” turns deep and introspective with “Playing in the Band” and “Terrapin,” and then later turns into a non-stop party with “Uncle John’s Band,” “I Need A Miracle,” “Bertha” and Good Lovin’.” If you’re not wiped out after that, the double-encore will waste you—“Casey Jones” and “Saturday Night”!

The sound on both discs is spectacular (it’s hard to beat great reels as source tapes), and as always the CDs have been mastered to the exacting HDCD spec, because you would accept nothing less. The colorful accompanying booklet contains a number of excellent Jay Blakesberg photos from those Oakland Aud. shows, as well as a typically inspiring essay by the always poetic Dead scribe Steve Silberman.

So it’s a win-win. A slam-dunk. A no-brainer. For more info on all the goodness packed onto these discs, click here. And when you finally come to your senses and decide that you can longer live another day without Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 1, you can order it here.

    What's next?
Time to start the wondering 'bout the next release. I see some are already doing so. I've been wrong about nearly every guess I've made since the series has started, so I guess I'll just keep my guessing to myself. Nevertheless, I AM eager for a new release... For Pure Jerry? That awesome JGB Halloween '93 show from Brendan Byrne would be sweet. One of the finest versions of Shining Star in existence. Just wishful thinking.

    why release
The Old Renaissance Faire Grounds from August 27, 1972. ??Nobody would be able to buy it , at least not from Dead.net !! However it would be nice to be able to vine out copy`s that already do circulate as bootlegs..

Dont't fall for the free shipping line either!
One more thing: They offer free shipping when you order sets in combo (i.e. RT3.1 and Let it Rock), and then go ahead and charge you for the shipping anyway. It seems the whole scheme of this website is now to ripoff customers. It didn't use to be like that.

If I remember correctly there was a circus motif to the festivities during this New Year's run, but then again it was always like a circus... These are incredible shows and I think 12/30 has never quite received it's kudos - the Scarlet > Let it Grow has some amazing moments! Full Show, Great Run, Good Job!

Well, I decided to order this set, along with the new JGB release. Lookin forward to it. It is an under-represented time in my collection, as is the JGB release. Decided to pass on the Winterland release. Glad to get these instead. I hope I don't have any customer service nightmares. Never had before, I will stay away from the phone operators in Bombay or wherever they are from. I also added the Pure Jerry from 1991, love that late era stuff. Xmas came early for me.

Bundle these two together (RT 3.1 & Garcia) it says, but when you click on the "Bundle up" link, you go from one release to the other, then back again etc. etc. Do you have to order one, then the other separately to get both? Normally in this situation you have the choice to order one, or the other, or both together. Some clarity - or an explanation - would be helpful. Also I notice that if you bundle the two together you get free shipping - in the US. Last time it was free shipping in the US and cheaper to the rest of the planet (i.e. the normal shipping charge less the US shipping charge). Is that also the case this time around? Waiting for help, waiting to order.

I see now that you get free shipping if you order both at the same time, which amounts to the same time. Especially psyched for the '75 JGB stuff, since that's relatively uncharted waters for my live dead collection.

... but I made the order, but only for the Road Trips volume ... I couldn't help but notice that standard postage has gone up from about $7.25 to almost $12.00 ... is that because of the low value of the US-dollar or because Rhino want to get some of the money back, that they have spent on sending packages back and forth around the globe?? Has anyone raised the idea of subscriptions to the Road Trips series? Has the organization considered this option? It seems like RT is rolling out regularly..maybe also Pure Jerry subscription? Free shipping or special rates for subscription or bundled subscriptions?I would love to see this happen.

I just checked out the normal sites I like to buy my music from (amazon, wal-mart, itunes) and none of the "Road Trips" releases are available for downloading. That's how I like to buy my music, I'm tired of all the jewel cases cluttering up my apartment, and I listen to music on an ipod anyway. I'd like to see this as a download. I thought I had taken care of this when I ordered Winterland. I had to have the store reset my password since it would not allow me to log on with what I thought I had changed, and I find nowhere where I can change my password back. Just finished listening to this show, via a quality Matrix of the soundboard and an excellent audience recording. It is indeed a great show. I could hear all the terrific high end notes, Bobby's slide running up and down the windings on his strings, Phil's bass punching out holes, Jerry's frantic picking, Billy on the left Mickey on the right, the new guy getting settled into his duties on keys and laying out some sweet interplays with the rest of the band, and the crisp clear vocals with all their expression. Is getting a slight upgrade of this show worth the headaches that the "New and Un-Improved" dead.net store will cause me? Should I go through the hassel just to get free shipping on the Jerry release? Is Rhino ever going to figure out what customer service really means? In the meantime boys and girls, I want everyone who reads these words to have a genuine, very happy, and oh so Grateful, beautiful day. PEACE! Hi, all, i too am a new user! -> First of all, i want to thank MaryE for everything to solve my problems. I don't know if this is suppose to be correct, but i also have 2 passwords and 2 user id's which are different. One for the dead.net store, and a second one for this site. This was confirmed, when i had success in placing my Road Trips Oakland '79 and rec'd a confirmation email. The second set was used to post to this site. So it is confusing at times if you don't write down what is for what for. Hope this helps - Looking forward to the 2 new releases!

I was told that all older orders (history) was wiped out when the system was updated and that they still don't have the new system up and running so you can view current orders. It will be nice when they finally get this done as it has taken too long to get the software working and it gets frustrating. On the music, I have preordered and look forward to hearing this.

I've placed my order and am excited about both of these releases, but especially the JGB. I've recently been really digging the energy of 79-80 Dead and can't wait to see how this complements RT 1.1. Everybody here is doing a great job - Heads ask and you deliver! I still think Rhino tends toward shoddy workmanship after I had to return TWO copies of the Winterland '73 box, but what the hell. mato1949 said : "Is getting a slight upgrade of this show worth (it?)" mato, if this hdcd version is anything like the previous releases, it will be superior to what you have now, hands down. It all depends on the capabilities of your sound system which, since you felt compelled to pose the question to begin with, is suspect. msqsec74: "HEY Why No Downloads !??! I'm tired of all the jewel cases cluttering up my apartment, and I listen to music on an ipod anyway." mato, you are beyond hope. My main concern is that those of your ilk, i.e., the ipod clones, are so conditioned to inferior sound reproduction that you will end up ruining the future development of high definition sound for the rest of us. How anyone can decry the development and release of high definition Dead music is beyond comprehension.

Great choice, great show, Brent is the man. But, I miss the time when we all were glad to get the music. We all don't have 10,000$ stereos, we're deadheads. I think IMHO that the MUSIC should be put out there for ALL to hear and have, like it use to be with the tapers. I never heard of a taper charging for this music, we just wanted to get this wonderful music out there for all to hear. I have excelent versions of this show, also matrix and an audience tape, both sound great. I don't think being mean spirited about others requests is very proactive. You and yours have their way of getting the music, and others have another, do you really think that high def will be ruined because somebody downloads an MP3? There has always been options with recorded music ie MFSL's original master recordings on vinyl and cd, and now HDCD vs MP3. I think if you want the music and can't afford the best, ANYTHING is better than nothing. I, personally would like all dead music on HDCD, but I can't afford it. So, I will take my download, or my old tape, or my old vinyl, it's all I got and it sounds great, even on my old stereo. The rest of us?

Dead Ahead said: blah blah blah blah. Dude, ease up. I greatly appreciate the hard work the wizards working with original material from the vault do and the great results they produce rendering these shows into HDCD. Twenty bucks for this show or any other is a great value. Listening to all my other official released shows, Dick's 1 to 36, the three Vaults, the four View from the Vaults, full shows, box sets, the eight Road Trips so far, and other material on my home Phillips system with HDCD is a real treat. So are all the quality low gen Soundboards, Matrixes, and good quality audience recordings. All my music is on CD, either purchased or burned. I only download in flac or shn which are lossless formats so I don't suffer from the degraded mp3 problem. Nero lets me burn straight from flac or shn to disk. I also back up my music to digital in wav format, just in case something happens to the original disks. I have a dozen hard drives loaded with wav files labled and stored away. Currently backing up to 500 gig externals and my next drive will be a 1.0 or 2.0 TB drive. A great soundcard on my computer wired into my stereo lets me play anything in my collection from my computer. But I don't just sit at home listening to music. I do have an iPod that lets me take my collection anywhere. I'm 85% full on an iPod 160 gig classic and can pull up everything in my collection to play through my car audio or the noise cancelling headphones I use. My beef has never been with the music, the band, or the releases. I'm pissed at Rhino for taking a perfectly good method of releasing and distributing music, and fixing it until it broke. Options we use to have are gone, the transition from friendly customer service via US mail to this electronic mega media outlet has taken most of the spirit out of Greatful Dead Merchandising. I miss waiting for the old newsletter coming in the mail with news of the latest release and the little order form to mail back. But I also miss my slim waistline, color in my grey hair, knees that don't hurt, and that chick in the back of that 67 VW bus. Peace my friend ;-) "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead." - On the Bus since December 29, 1968

Mato, thanks for clarifying. I admit I got carried away in my post. But I do see a trend in the music market place toward inferior music formats which is a threat to the new high-def music formats. Just look at DVD-a and SACD discs disappearing. Did anyone buy the DVDa version of American Beauty and play it on a system capable of reproducing this uncompressed, truly multi-channel sound? The music is stunning. Well, you're not likely to see anymore releases like that, which is a shame. Unless HDCD is supported in the market place, it too could disappear. I say keep them coming! Again, I apologize for my previous post. I shouldn't rail against my friends, the Dead Freaks, when it is the general market-place trend described above that I lament. Peace, Jay

The concern show here by some posters about so-called inferior music formats is, to some extent justified. I know of a couple of (live) albums in the last year or so that are only available as MP3 downloads from iTunes. Whilst MP3's are not my format of choice, they are undoubtedly popular due to their portability. On this site, downloads are available in a variety of formats including lossless FLAC. If you choose for a FLAC download, then you can burn it to a CD as WAV files and you can also decode it to MP3 for listening on the move - you do not have to buy both versions. To digress slightly, there are also portable music players available which will play FLAC files directly, just as an iPod or the like will play MP3's. In my opinion, sales of a product offered only as a download will be reduced by only offering it in MP3 format and to me it doesn't make much sense - the show or whatever was surely not recorded to MP3, but to a higher quality format. That being the case, why not offer that as well? I can see the demise of physical CDs in the not too distant future - and I for one will miss them, but as long as a lossless format such as FLAC is available, the loss will not be too great. If only MP3's will be available in the future then it will be a serious loss and a retrograde step as technology improves. The only possible motive for such a move is, of course, the bottom line - savings can be made in the capacity of servers as regards storage (disc) space and also bandwidth. As usual, the consumer will be the one to lose out. Regarding higher resolution formats than FLAC / WAV, such as DVD-A and SACD, I personally saw no justifiable reason to buy yet more hardware and (re)purchase all my favourite music - again. I re-purchased most of my LPs once already, as CDs, and was not prepared to do so yet again. Time will tell how we are able to purchase music in the future, but from here the future does not look very bright.

Although I love the touch ups to the sound quality of the Road Trips shows, why not just make the bonus disc apart of the set? If you dont get the bonus disc now you will end up paying up to $100 for the set on eBay and the music from the bonus is take off the free streaming sites online! This music is lost forever to most folks! While I love the '79 Winter tour, there is a lot of other music from the late 60's and early 70's that needs to get out there as well. How about a '72 or '76 Road Trips? I wish they would slow down on the releases, this habit is getting too expensive for me. I wonder what Jerry would think about all this....

The bonus disc is a perplexing thing. The material on it seems two fall into one or other of two categories. The first is category is that it is more of the same as is on the basic two-disc set, in which case it should be released as a contiguous three-disc set. The second category is that it is something almost totally unrelated to to the basic two-disc set, except that it generally comes from a time reasonably close to that of the basic set. In this case it should be released as a separate item. In either case, it should be just as available as the set it comes with. There would seem to be two reasons for releasing it as a bonus disc in a separate sleeve: 1) The cheap 'n' nasty recycled toilet-paper-roll sleeves of the Road Trips series can only be made to accomodate two discs, and 2) It is a shoddy marketing gimmick to get people to part with their money a.s.a.p. in a desparate attempt to claw back the costs of the release as quickly as possible. Additionally, the more Road Trips that you purchase with the bonus disc, the more scared you become of missing out on one - we are all human, after all (aren't we?). In any event, it amounts to releasing 1/3 of the material as limited editions (albeit seemingly free of charge). I can see the reason for limited editions in some situations, i.e. those nice Mobile Fidelity Gold discs, but for bulk-standard CD's such as these I really cannot see any justifiable reason. We are all aware of how many people are utterly pissed off that the Fillmore 10CD box was so limited and in that case it seems obvious that they could have made a lot more money on that one by releasing it in unlimited quantities. Possibly it was all down to not knowing what the demand for it would be, and being terrified of having shelves full of unsold, expensive boxes. But don't worry folks - I am sure the people in charge here will reply and expain everything so that we are not left wondering what & why. Oh, sorry, I forgot - the people in charge here do not deem it necessary to explain anything, ever. Shame, really.

I truly feel sorry for all these Dead Heads in European Countries, they have to pay much more higher postage fees than residents of the USA. If I had the funds, I would buy several copies of each release and resell these at cost to them and I would pay the postage for me to mail privately to them or charge them much lower than what the fulfillment center charges. I would get the satisfaction of helping someone out, and they these few lucky ones, would save money and get nearly the same benefits of residents of the USA.I just don't have the time or the inclination or the money to do this. Could someone else try and do this? I am looking foward to these two releases, both are needed.
