December 10 at Thelma's
I was at the December 10 Dead concert at Thelma. There were two sit-down (and I do mean sit down -- there were no chairs) concerts that evening in a very intimate setting. I attended with two friends, one of whom, named Molly, had gone to school with Bill Kreutzmann in Palo Alto, and we were let in through a back door. After the first set, everyone was kicked out to make room for another group of customers, but a gentleman named Owsley Stanley (!!) ushered us into a space behind the speakers, offered us three tall glasses of water, and told us to hide out until the next group of concertgoers came in. About halfway through the second concert -- as best as I can recall since I was pretty high -- Stephen Stills sat in. At the end of the evening, Phil Lesh walked up to us, thrust out his guitar, and said something like "It's made out of wood and steel and makes music."
Re: Thelma. Rumor had it that the venue was set up by a wealthy woman (Thelma?) for her son to host rock concerts.
