Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music from 1974, 1978 and 1987, three distinct, and excellent, eras in the history of the Grateful Dead.
Our first stop this week is on 7/27/74 in Roanoke, VA, where the Dead were playing with their massive Wall Of Sound. The Dead would return to Roanoke in July, 1987, for a couple of excellent and well-received shows. From their debut performance in Roanoke, we have US Blues>Promised Land, Brokedown Palace, Not Fade Away>GDTRFB>Johnny B. Goode. The last song here fades out, which is part of our reference copy. The master in the vault is intact.
From Four years later on 6/4/78 at UCSB Stadium in Santa Barbara, CA, we have the end of the second set, featuring Not Fade Away>GDTRFB>Around and Around. We hope you don't mind two NFA>GDTRFB combinations this week.
Lastly this week, from nine years later and just down the road from Santa Barbara, we have music from 6/13/87 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, feayuring Shakedown Street ; Saint Of Circumstance > Ship Of Fools ; Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World. These shows would prove to be the Grateful Dead's final shows in Ventura, CA.
Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.
