Week of November 16-22, 2020
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we’ll hear music from a nine year span, covering three very different eras in Grateful Dead music.
Our first selection this week is from 5/29/71 at Winterland in San Francisco, where we have this classic 1971 sequence of Truckin'>The Other One>Wharf Rat. A month earlier at the Fillmore East the Dead recorded the definitive Other One>Wharf Rat that would appear later in the year on Skull & Roses.
Next is the end of the show from 5/13/78 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, PA, where we have Truckin' > Black Peter > Sugar Magnolia, One More Saturday Night. Worth noting is Phil singing on Truckin’. Phil didn’t sing at all 1976-1984, with a few exceptions, including these late 1970s Truckin’s, and the 1983 St. Stephens.
Lastly is the end of the second set from 5/29/80 in Des Moines, with a unique sequence of Lost Sailor> Saint Of Circumstance> Comes A Time> Around And Around> Johnny B. Goode. The last song is cut on the master cassette, hence its abrupt end.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
