Week of November 23-29, 2020

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1978, 1982, and 1984.

Our first selection this week is the excellent, high-energy first set from the Dead’s performance at UCSB Stadium in Santa Barbara, CA, featuring Bertha> Good Lovin'; Dire Wolf ; Me And My Uncle> Big River; Brown Eyed Women; Looks Like Rain; Tennessee Jed; Jack Straw.

Next is the end of the show from the Dead’s final performance in Glens Falls, NY, on 4/14/82, the fourth year in a row the Dead had played this small arena in upstate NY. From this show we have The Wheel> I Need A Miracle> Black Peter> Playing In The Band> Johnny B. Goode, US Blues.

Lastly this week, from two years to the day after our Glens Falls selection, we have the end of the show from 4/14/84 in Hampton, VA, featuring Morning Dew > Throwing Stones> One More Saturday Night, It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

Jerry's tone on the Wolf is so dialed-in during the Dew solo - just bubbling on the knife-edge of feeding-back....combine that with the digital delay on his voice channel and this is a dynamic version! Goosebump climax jam too!

These 84 Dew's are standouts...

Hey Man
I must concur with LS3 that some of the Dews of this period are fantastic. See and listen to Daves Picks Vol 35 Philly , within the same week as this Hampton sequence. Vocally, the band is tired, musically there are some fine passages of playing right up and through the Providence run 4/26-27. Garcia was exclusively playing the Tiger from Summer of 1979 -1990, with a few rare exceptions. The Wolf did , I believe, make a brief return for Garcia’s MIDI playing in 1989

Merci beaucoup Monsieur Lemieux
