Week of September 7-13, 2020
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from three distinct periods in the Grateful Dead’s history, 1969, 1973, and 1985.
Our first selection this week is classic Live/Dead era Dead, from 3/28/69 in Modesto, CA, where we have Dead’s week-long run there prior to traveling to London to start the Europe ’72 tour. From this fine show we have Dark Star> St. Stephen > The Eleven> Death Don't Have No Mercy> Turn On Your Love Light.
Next up is the big second set jam from 3/30/73 in Rochester, NY, where the Dead were playing the Community War Memorial for the first time. From this show, we have Truckin'>Eyes Of The World> Not Fade Away> Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad> One More Saturday Night.
Lastly this week is the excellent first set from 3/29/85 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, featuring Cold Rain And Snow ; Down In The Bottom > I Ain't Superstitious ; Friend Of The Devil ; Supplication > My Brother Esau ; Tennessee Jed ; New Minglewood Blues > Don't Ease Me In.
Thanks for joining us, and be sure to stop by next week for more music from the vault.
Outstanding selection: love the jazzy instrumental jam within the '73-'74 versions of Eyes of the World. Very nice segue into Not Fade Away. 9/20/74 had a similar setlist/sequence.
"3/28/69 in Modesto, CA, where we have Dead’s week-long run there prior to traveling to London to start the Europe ’72 tour". But first they jumped into the time machine? ;)
