    Boxed and Ready to Go!

Sound the imperial trumpets! Bang the drum! Pop that champagne! Another Grateful Dead box set is comin’ your way! Yes, in the grand tradition of the beloved Fillmore West 1969 and Winterland 1973 boxes, comes Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD box set that is sure to knock your tie-dyed socks off.

At this point, we probably don’t need to hype you on the glories of ’77 Dead. It was a magical time for the band, which was reinvigorated by a plethora of great new material—“Terrapin,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Passenger,” “Fire on the Mountain”—and really hitting its stride again following the October ’74 to June ’76 performing hiatus. The group spent much of the first three months of 1977 recording their Terrapin Station album with producer Keith Olsen, and Garcia also managed to find time to complete the much-anticipated Grateful Dead movie (which opened June 1, 1977). The third week of April, the band embarked on what most Dead Heads agree was one of the greatest tours ever: 26 concerts in the East and Midwest in a little over a month—an awesome stretch that produced so many great shows, a few of them already released in the Dick’s Picks series and subsequently (and more, no doubt, destined to come out down the road.)

So when the Dead returned to San Francisco’s Winterland for shows on June 7, 8, 9, they were pumped up and feeling good! They treated their hometown fans to three superb concerts that included excellent versions of much of their current repertoire, from the new combo of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain,” to a truly colossal, more than 30-minute “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower,” “Saint Stephen,” “Terrapin,” “Good Lovin’,” “Not Fade Away,” “The Other One”… too many favorites to mention (you can see the complete song lists here). Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings contains every note recorded from the three shows, more than nine hours of prime Dead, all taken from the master analog tapes, restored using the Plangent Processes, and mastered in HDCD by that inimitable sonic tweakster, Jeffrey Norman.

The nine discs are packaged in a beautifully designed box that includes artwork by Emek (you loved his crazy Winterland ’73 phantasmagoria); a 28-page booklet featuring a wonderful and illuminating new essay by Rolling Stone senior music editor David Fricke (who dubs this a “box of paradise and circus… six complete sets of inspired risk and collective explosion”); lots of great Winterland action shots by noted GD shutterbugs Ed Perlstein and Bruce Polonsky; and a couple of little pieces of period memorabilia we won’t reveal here.

clicking here. We know you’re gonna dig it! And rest assured, there’s plenty more where this came from: We know you love the box sets; well, we do, too!

    Hoping this returns...
I hope this set returns at some point, though I'm not counting on it. I'd love to get it as a mate for my Winterland 1973 box. It's surprisingly hard to find at a reasonable price on the secondary market. That's what I get for missing it years ago, I suppose.

    Sold out
I think it is sold out. This set re-appeared (BRIEFLY) last fall, and I jumped in and bought it in Nov. 2014. After a while, it disappeared again. (Maybe they just found a few extra sets kicking around the warehouse or something?) I was pleased -- and somewhat shocked -- when my box set arrived WITH THE BONUS DISK. Sorry it seems to be gone again. Seems like a set they might want to "resurrect"

    Still available?
The link to the store is broken (it 404s) and I can't find a download version of this in the store or any message that it is sold out or in fact any trace of it ever having existed. Which is kind of a shame - I'm streaming the show from archive.org, but I am broadly in favour of handing over some money instead.

Micke, Remember, it's not that customs is charging me that, it's that UPS is charging me most of that amount. The actual customs cost would be EUR 20, or about $13. The rest is UPS and their abusive charges.

Okey, but what I mean is if they mark the package with an amount over $112.00 and I get to pay a lot more taxes than I'm supposed to. In Sweden the merchandise taxes are 25% and together with the Post Office charges that means about $40.00 extra to pay for the Winterland box, if Rhino mark the package with the correct sum. That's a lot of money for "four albums", incl. the bonus album.--------------------------------------------------------- cosmicbadger: Nope, I'm a member of Vänsterpartiet, which is the largest lefties parties. My party is however for making downloading. An opinion which is shared by Piratpartiet. But me, myself, I'm against it - for copyright reasons. Some people mean all music och motion pictures should be free of charge and some of those people think so because they mean that to be a musician is not a proper daily occupation. I mean all writers and artist own their own work and decide themselves if it will be free or not, unless they have sold that right to decide to a record or movie company. And as long as recording equipment isn't free of charge for everyone who will make an recording, I have no right as a consumer to "steal" copyrighted work. I have yet to receive any order confirmation or actually received my box but it looks as though my card has been charged twice for this amount. I only ordered one box, and I'm not even sure about that since their is no way to check your online "Store Account" order history any more. I did receive my order confirmation on the day (9/14/09) I ordered but that has been it from Dead.net. Can you check my order number 9832222265CJA4J322 to ensure I actually have an order and that its only for one box, not two as it looks like I've been charged for!! If you can let me know the shipping status that would be great too as I live in the mountains and not easy to check PO Box all the time waiting on Dead. I didn't order two of these, damn it took all year to save for one!!! Thank You Thank You

It's strange that some people have managed to get their orders processed and even delivered, whereas others, me included, are rejected every time. What's the common factor?US vs. International? Phone vs. web? USPS vs. UPS? Pure luck? What? Please Mary, or anybody, confirm that you're making progress - I'm getting very jittery now that the official release date draws near.

Micke, The "invoice" was in a plastic thingy pasted on the envelope that contained the box, but was folded so I couldn't see much. I only saw the bottom-right part of it, which had the total that UPS wanted to charge me. So I can't tell what value they declared.

As we are all well aware there are multiple problems associated with ordering from the store and seemingly more so for customers outside the US. Worse still these problems have occurred in the past. Having read many of the posts here, I consider myself to have been relatively lucky - I have only had problems in the past with the Egypt set where my credit card and address details were screwed up and I had the well known "glue issue" with the CDs. Regarding the screwed up details, Marye (bless her) contacted customer service, they contacted me and the problem was resolved. This time around, judging from other posts, the problems are much more severe and wide ranging. The most obvious thing throughout all of this is that there has never (as far as I am aware) been any acknowledgement of any sort from Rhino and certainly no apologies. Is it unreasonable to expect to hear something, anything from Rhino about this? Could they not acknowledge that something is badly wrong with their system, give details of the problems and an outline of what they intend to do about it? Maybe because they have a monopoly on the vault they have become smug and feel that they do not have to react - after all, what they release is (at the time of release, at least) only available from them. With the current mess, it would seem that even what they alone release is not available to purchase from them for some of us. They are currently having to reorganize due to a lack of sales of CDs, yet when they release something, it cannot be purchased due to their own ineptitude, reducing their sales even further. Where I come from it is referred to as shooting oneself in the foot (or worse). Digressing slightly, when they became aware that some people actually had the nerve to download the MP3's that were being posted on the "Taper's section" they stopped it without so much as a word of explanation, thereby again upsetting many people. To sum up, customer relations is non-existent at Rhino and, worse still, they appear to have absolutely no idea that keeping one's customers happy may be in their best interests. What will it take to get Rhino to understand how to run a successful business? This board should be full of posts from happy Dead-heads looking forward to the getting latest upcoming release. Instead, such posts are in the minority, overshadowed by frustrated customers who are struggling to buy what they want - and through all this Rhino remain silent and invisible. No wonder they are having to reorganize, but being more open and customer friendly does not require a reorganization, just a bit of business sense. Long rant over, but will anyone who needs to be aware of this actually take note of it? I doubt it.

Simonrob, I totally agree with most of what you said. But what Rhino doesn't realize is that their monopoly is built on feet of clay: unhappy customers will stop buying, and will torrent the music instead. They'll sell less and less, in spite of their monopoly, mirroring what's happening in the music industry in general. Treat your customers poorly and they have other options. I wanted this set; I still do. But there's a limit to how many hoops I'm willing to jump through.

1. In the thinnest parts, the skin of a rhinoceros is 18-20 mm (3/4 inch) thick. In some parts, like the on the shoulders of the white rhinoceros, the skin will attain a thickness of a least 45 mm (2 inches) from sosrhino dot org 2. All 5 species of wild rhino (Black, White, Indian, Sumatran and Javan) are in danger of extinction and (imo) much more deserving of our help than the LA version. now you know why they called themselves that! 3. Kirkmc, Now you know why the bonus discs exist. It is not only a question of jumping through many hoops, it is also knowing that you will almost certainly have to do the same next time (but with different hoops) and the next time etc. Also try to imagine how much worse it could be and would be without Marye selflessly and tirelessly helping so many people. Unfortunately there is only some much she can do and changing the corporate attitude seems like an insurmountable challenge.

After reading lots of posts, following lots of links and thinking logically about the issue, I've come to the conclusion that none of this is Rhino's fault. The reason being that Rhino, the Rhino that negotiated with the remaining members and the Garcia estate for the rights to the Vault, no longer exists. Rhino has been turned into a in name only company with most of their staff being laid off. Customer service has been for the most part shipped over to India, the merchandise in stock has been moved to a different warehouse, the old method of payments have been thrown out and contracted to an outside vendor, and the suits at Warner Bros, holding couldn't care less what happens to you, your order, your CDs in the mail, or the music and video in the Vault. If it doesn't look like a good return, it ain't gonna happen. I expect that the future will have fewer releases of physical stuff and more of the Downloadable type of releases to keep in line with Rhino's new role within the Warner family of corporate slavery. Dead Net will turn into a shadow of its former self and more of us will rely instead on those fine show recording and trading folks that have provided the lions share of most of our collections to begin with. With the latest work in the art of the Matrix recording, some of the freely available stuff is as good as if not better than some commercial releases. Who knows what the future will bring? Is there some geeky freaky computer nerd programer out there working on a Garcia AI that will accurately recreate all of the shows ever played in full 48 bit surround sound splender with voice synth so accurate you will close your eyes and see Jerry standing before you, or better yet also produce holographic images of the band from any era! Well it's time for my medication. Everyone have a wonderfully orgasmic and Grateful day!!!\ Peace!!! "When I die bury me deep, put two speakers at my feet, pair of ear phones on my head, and always play The Grateful Dead."

If you want a good laugh, go here: (and follow the "Read more..." links) http://www.rhino.com/about/index.lasso mato1949, If you follow the link above, you can also read that "In the year 1998 Rhino became a part of the Warner Music Group". I may be wrong, but I think that is years before the vault deal (vaultgate?) occurred.

I've been trying for 2 weeks to order this to no avail. "customer service" was pretty much worthless as well when I emailed them. Think I'll just wait and pick it up off feEbay or Overstock for half the price like I did with the '73 set and say the heck with the bonus disc (is it even still available?).

Sure I'll buy it, but enough of the 1977 already, can we get back to something more intense, like 1970 (FE Sept 1970) or 1971 (Felt Forum Dec 1971)? LOL!

$100+ is a lot of money but when I saw this box set listed, I jumped at the opportunity to order it. I love 1977 and Donna & Keith era Dead the most and I rank 6/9/77 as the best show ever featuring the best-ever Help>Slip>Frank and the best-ever Terrapin. I have the 6/9/77 show soundboard on bootleg but I'll gladly pay for the re-mastered real thing and the band deserve the money for their music. I can't wait to hear this three-night run with that warm Winterland sound and I figured I'd better order it while I can.

Like I said, I'm kind of over it now, the initial excitement that had me convinced me to drop $100+ despite being unemployed is long gone. Hope you guys are able to get it straightened out though.

We all know the state that this sad site is in, but it is incomprehensible that nothing seems to have changed or been fixed since the current debacle began more than two weeks ago.It all seems symptomatic of an enterprise in terminal decline. I suspect that little or no good news will be forthcoming in the forseeable future. Sadly I'm resigned to the seemingly inevitable demise of dead.net, at least as we know it. One must hope that before it finally goes belly-up, they manage to sell the rights to the vault to someone who at least has some idea of how to run an on-line business.

Sound the imperial trumpets! Bang the drum! Send for I.T.!!!When I received the email announcing this release on 9-14, I jumped right on it ... only the store wouldn't recognize my log in. I called the 800 # and got a profoundly humorless and info-less person on the other end of the phone ... in India! He assured me that the problem would be fixed by the following Monday. It's now more than two weeks later. I tried again and this time, the only difference is that I kept getting disconnected by the 800# ... Spoke to no one! Whatever was done to this web site is ruining your business ... I want to order this set and I want the bonus disc. I'm also unemployed and before I come to my senses about why exactly I need to spend a c-note, I'm thinking you might want to fix the site ASAP ... and send an email out when it's ready. You're losing all of your impulse sales ... which is probably a good percentage of your numbers! Fix the site.

Every time I want to spend $250-500 on new product, there are problems. There were problems in ordering the digital downloads for the Dead shows too. Please get your act together. This can' take three weeks to fix. I have been ordering at full retail here for the extra disk, but I guess saving 30% at Amazon is the only way to go. Please stop taking so long to fix these simple programming and customer relations errors. I like what you are doing with the product lines but the customer relations in the last year have been very poor

TigerLilly & Kirkmc, It is The Grateful Dead Store's website (and the people maintaining it) that is screwed up. On that site one can not login or check order status etc. Also when people try to purchase from there, things go horribly wrong. It also seems that when things go wrong there, no one is capable (or willing?) to sort it out. As for customer service, which has now been outsourced to India, they are inexperienced. Maybe they are also inept, but I am not in a position to judge them having not tried to contact them. I feel some sympathy for them - they have really been thrown in at the deep end, having to try and sort out problems resulting from the broken store website. As regards this site (dead.net rather than deadnetstore.com) I have never seen a real problem or issue here. I have also never had problems with the Rhino Central site or the Rhino Handmade site. It is just deadnetstore.com that is screwed up and all the problems appear to stem from that. The most worrying aspect is that nothing there gets fixed even though it must be blindingly obvious by now that something is horribly wrong. Sales must be at an all time low simply due to the fact that so many people cannot order. This means that income from the store must also be at an all time low. Even though income must have plummeted, nobody seems willing or able to fix things or even comment on the situation. The whole situation is stranger than fiction.

I just received my copy. This box is great, it is set up and looks like the '73 box. I ordered this the day it was announced, and I choose ups rush delivery because it was cheaper it cost like $5, to ship overnight to Canada. When I started hearing all the stories of botched ordering and so on I called customer service b/c their was no ability to check order status online. I was worried so I called. It took a little waiting to get through but the agent I got was able confirm my order for me. After hearing all these horror stories I guess I figured I should make it known that some orders went along just fine. In fact this is the best ordering process I've had in the last 2-3 years. Shipping is usually more money and I usually don't get the product till 1 month after it's released. It is not even October 1 yet. Someone must be doing something right. Thank You. Can't wait to dive in, glad I have the day off.

I am glad to see that some orders went very well and that product is starting to be received, but this was the worst online ordering experience that I have had to date at dead.net. I know this is hindsight, but: 1) Dead.net should have know that it was a very big risk to changeover the online order system and the customer support for dead.net while simultaneously announcing the pre-order for a high-demand item such as the Winterland 1977 boxset. 2) When changing over the online order system, an email should have gone out to each customer with an account in their database to notify us of the change, request an attempt to login, and include instructions on how to proceed if logins were unsuccessful using the new system. Some future improvements that I hope to see at dead.net to ensure a better purchasing experience in the future include: 1) Give us the ability to log into our store accounts so that we can verify status of the product ordered. This is a key requirement, not an option, for an online ordering system. 2) The order confirmation emails state “you will receive an email confirmation as soon as your order leaves our warehouse”. This has never been the case and it was not the case with my recent order for the boxset. Please start sending shipping notifications when the product is sent. 3) I have witnessed cases were my credit card is being charged before the product is actually shipped, this in my opinion, is an unacceptable business practice. 4) The Grateful Dead have a very dedicated fan base which translates into a solid consumer base for the products offered by the dead.net store. Please do away with the cheap “bonus disc” marketing ploy and keep the music available - the “bonus disc” should be a permanent part of the set. If you feel the need to pump up initial sales then offer an intitial price for a limited time, then increase the price by $5 or $10, but still include the “bonus disc” as part of the package. Not everyone can afford to buy each of these releases out of the gate. This marketing ploy is very short sighted and I am guessing may be losing money for dead.net as consumers are forced to go elaswhere for copies of the "out-of-print" music (eBay, BitTorrent sites or friends). How about re-releasing the complete Fillmore West 1969 boxset as an "unlimited" release. Please contact Amazon for some tips if you are looking for a vendor that excels in online ordering. One other note, I have had nothing but excellent service whenever I have contacted the Rhino Central site for support. Mac Dunlop (a.k.a. Dr. Rhino) is very responsive and has resolved many issues for me. Just my two cents…

FYI - My box arrived today, delivered to the San Francisco Bay Area. I ordered on September 14 and received the confirmation email that day, but I did not get the "you will receive an email confirmation as soon as your order leaves our warehouse" email. So sit tight you guys, your orders should arrive any time now. Don't deluge the phone lines asking for your order status and don't waste your time looking online... at least not yet. By the way, the sound quality is superb; you will not be disappointed! I hope your systems are up to the task of playing this at near concert levels. You will be very pleased. Interesting tidbit: In my box are the expected concert discs, bonus disc and the "liner notes" booklet. Not expected in said box is a postcard announcing that the Grateful Dead Movie is scheduled to be shown at The Fox Skyline Theatre in San Bruno, CA and The Cinema of Walnut Creek Theatre in Walnut Creek, CA on Oct. 5 - 18. Additionally, there is a Grateful Dead Movie pin of 1.5 inches diameter (3.8 cm). I suspect that these GD Movie items are regionally specific and will not be in all boxes. One last item included is a color print on card stock identical to the liner note booklet cover. That's my report. Best regards, Jay

There is a message above from dancingbear.dk. He is also wondering why he is not getting his order through. Funny part is that dancingbear.dk is a danish webstore. If you go to their pages they are claiming to be an Official Grateful Dead Merchandise. They are selling this new Winterland box and price is 133,56€. That is 195,22$. Strange.

morokolli (and others who may be wondering) - www.dancingbear.dk caters to European deadheads who either don't have internationally recognized credit cards, or don't want the hassels of online ordering (and right now I fully understand them!), or just prefer to talk to a local instead of trying to make themselves understood by some Indian.I buy most of the merchandise right here, same as you, at the same prices, and resell it at a modest profit. Fortunately I don't have to make a living doing this, it's more like a hobby beside my regular job. If asking price looks a bit steep to you, try making the calculation yourself and make sure to include postage, customs duties, customs fee, and 25% Danish sales tax. You'll see that I'm not ripping anyone off. But it helps feed my habit, which happens to be live Grateful Dead music! And now you must excuse me - I have a rather large order still hanging by a thread here! Bjorn Lindstrom Dancing Bear, Denmark

Hi guys, received my box yesterday. I never got a confirmation email about the order and of course never got a shipping email. The only way I knew it was on the way was because of the transfer of funds from my bank to dead.net. I ordered my box on the 16th. It also includes the pin, post card announcing the GD movie at the Fox Skyline & Cinema of Walnut Creek, & the cover on card stock. Now if only the PJ Vol.1 which I ordered on the 9th of Sept. would arrive. I did get an order confirmation email on that order:>).... Take care, N4YKD

Hmm well I don't know what to think about Bjorn's business. Part of me says good luck if he can find buyers at those prices and can offer better service than the shambles of a store here. Incidentally spincds in the UK also sell GD releases with bonus disks. In their case the '77 Winterland Set with Bonus disk is being advertised at GBP109.99 or USD 176.00, quite a lot less than the Danish store. visit http://www.spincds.com/archives.asp?id=16065 On the other hand if these resellers buying in bulk are depriving individuals shopping at the store here of the chance to get the bonus discs then I would say that is out of order. So the question is: Does the store have a policy on bulk buys of 'exclusive to Deadnet' offers?

No offence Bjorn but you have to admit that it is funny when a reseller (like you) must be complaining here with regular consumers (like me) to get these products. We both have money and valid credit cards and we both have tried to get these products through web and by calling to customer service for three weeks now. I am not complaining about your prices. You can ask any price you want. I just normally get them lot cheaper from this store including toll and tax and shipping costs. I have actually bought some items from you that i couldnt get here. I would buy these products from you if the price was reasonable. Now it is not. On the other hand if you one day actually get these Winterland boxes let me know ;). I am not getting my order through and I have done everything I have been told to do. So there is not really any other way than try to get it from some place else.

I submitted this on a earlier Road Trips forum that it was strange the bonus disc's sold out very fast. I suspected people were buying these in bulk and reselling them with the bonus disc for a profit. I saw many of these offers on Ebay and Amazon. It was my opinion the Dead.net limit the amount that can be purchased by each customer in an attempt to cut down on the scalping. Or they could eliminate the bonus disc or have the bonus disc offered on pre-order only. If you order by a certain date you are assured of the bonus disc. Of course this fell on deaf ears, and now people are being deprived of the bonus disc by others who are scalping this product. I understand people might feel that they are performing some special service but in my opinion scalping is scalping and this is hurting customers who wish to receive the bonus disc. My opinion, for what it's worth.

From dictionary.com scalp –verb (used with object) to resell (tickets, merchandise, etc.) at higher than the official rates. Dead.net please find a way to put a stop to this practice.

Now, at last, we're getting somewhere! (marye, are you listening?) Customer service just informed me that the new shop imposes a limit of $500 per order. Now, wouldn't it have been nice if they (and the ordering system) had told us that from the beginning? So, the first 2 orders below that limit were accepted, but not the third. Another new limit? So be it. Good luck to the rest of you.

...so I've got it into my stupid head that I should order this, after convincing myself over the last three weeks that, regardless of how much I want it, I'm better off waiting due to the nonsense that other international customers have gone through. I guess I'm too weak to resist the bonus disc offer, despite already having the Playing>Drums>NFA>Comes A Time>Playing mp3 from the Taper's Section back in May 2007. I'll give it a go and buy three Estimated Prophets in the hope that I get a classic Help> Slipknot> Fraknlin's and a Morning Dew to write home about. In all fairness, I've only ever had one problem ordering from dead.net during the Rhino era and that was sorted very quickly (I received two disc ones and no disc two for Road Trips Vol. 1 No. 1). Still, the negativity - and don't get me wrong: it sounds like very warranted negativity - is a bit of a downer so I'm going to crap on about how good the Jerry Garcia Band / Bay Area 1978 release is. Get your hands on it. I guarantee Lonesome And A Long Way From Home is as good as ANYTHING you will find on this Winterland June 1977 boxset. I'll report back if my order is successful, if my credit card is charged 19 times, or if I am informed that I have the wrong star sign to order. Godspeed to you all. In the end, we've still got our favourite shows that we'll always be able to listen to and smile about, despite any silliness with official releases. PS. What's with the Wolfgang's Vault thing? 15 May 1970/late show is quite a release but, based on a lossy preview, I don't think it's mastered very spectacularly. As for the 150 odd GD shows supposedly due for release, I wonder what this means for dead.net...

OK well I'm still somewhat intoxicated and managed to submit an order (against my better judgment). I got an order confirmaiton immediately so I guess I'm committed now. I wonder if things have been fixed up or if I'm just lucky. Either way, the aforementioned Estimated Prophets (and a couple of Good Lovins) should be on their way shortly. Any Australians on here already submitted/received an order? If the system works for Australia, there's really no excuse for it not working anywhere else. It's a long way.

I live in South Florida. I just got my box set with bonus cd. I did not get email confirmation on shipping. Sounds great.
