I just love going first!

Woohoo! I get to post first...now...if I only had something to say...Just kidding! This topic is a great idea. Thanks so much for getting this up so quickly (and thanks to SPACEBROTHER for being the kind of person that makes things happen). Hey, I've got my own thing going called Fralex9 which can be heard by visiting http://www.myspace.com/fralex9 . OK, now here is the deal. I need musicians and I'd really love to meet up with some Dead Head musicians as my songs are written with parts specifically designed to be stretched out and jammed upon. I'm in the Seattle area and I'm looking for people who want to play once or twice a month, your material, my material, Material, whatever, just wanna jam with some new folks! I'm looking forward to hearing all about everyone's music, too. One of my favorite things about Dead shows was that there were always jams in the "lots" or wherever else surrounding the venue. Always quality, always positive.

Let's jam

My name's Ben; i've been in New York for eight years now, five of those as a bass. We had a band for three years that did (mostly) original rock and roll ("rockin' blues and country roll"). that fell apart, as these things do after our first and last tour up the east coast to Maine. Since then, every musician i know seems to be quitting their day jobs and playing jazz to make ends meet so I've been playing jazz for a year and a bit. Of course i want to play f**&%$n' rock and roll! I heard about a Grateful dead jam a little while ago but it turned out to be not much more than three guys in a bar with too much gear and not enough rehearsal time, so that was that. I have (as of now) one regular saturday night jazz gig, as well as the odd studio project on the burner, so let's get together. I still have a day job, which is teaching, which means i'm now on summer vacation, ready to whore myself out to anyone with a dollar to give me for playing! I sure hope you live on the east coast, cause otherwise this was a ot of rambling for nuthin!

Maybe I'll post this here; I put it in another forum and this one is probably more appropriate. Hi all, I can tell you about a few of my songs that I wrote about the Grateful dead. I've posted them on a myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/dcmuir I write quite a lot but these ones were written directly for/about the Dead. Some day I will post a couple of 'albums' of my stuff on a web page when it can be constructed. I'm not a very economically minded musician and would just like to share my inspiration as it comes to me. Right now I'm just posting versions of songs that I've recorded while playing all the parts myself. I do dream of having my music getting a life of its own and taking me along but in the meantime people may as well enjoy it who can!

Folk Rock for Groovin Families!

That's what I do.I've finished recording the 12 songs for the cd - most based on things our 5-year-old daughter says and does. Just doing some minor touch-ups then it's off to Black Dog Studios in Tampa to be mixed and mastered. Thanks Tony....that's right I didn't even realize I had changed my handle; I use this one on some other places-it refers to my job which is a stagehand in my town as opposed to the road crew I am the local crew. Thanks for the interest again, I may give the Tall Tale a slight remix just to remove some clutter etc.....or I may get sidetracked....who knows. I'll let you know when I get some 'albums' up of my material; it will probably be streaming audio or some such. Nice to see Chip pumping out the tunes too.....keep 'er coming Chip!

On the Spirit Trail

Hay now Guys, This is cool, a forum for musicians to meet.... My name is Woody, been a Deadhead and going to shows for many many years, so many show, I lost count. I've been working on a basement project CD, called, On the Spirit Trail, inspired by all the road trips taken over the years. It started about a year ago as a myspace project where I recorded a few Dead cover tunes and Dead inspired original songs and posted them on myspace. I've made a couple demo CDs in the past to give out to friends I meet along the road. Then I decided to enter a couple songs into a Relix jamoff contest to try to get onto their compilation CD. Did not win, but received runner up, which was more than I thought I'd get and It got me an add in the Relix June issue. That gave me the inspiration to try to put together a real CD. It turned out to be a bit more work than I originally thought it would be, had to get licenses in place for the Dead and other cover songs, CD art, CD mastering, and have learned lots of stuff along the way about how to make a real CD. The CD should be released around June 21st or so. It is at the replicators now. It is kind of a cross between the Grateful Dead and Yonder Mountain String Band. The Jack Fate Band

The Jack Fate Band is my current lineup of friends that stretch back almost thirty years and still going strong. Currently we are a quartet with two acoustic guitars, flute and percussion. We play primarily music of the 60's, but will try anything and if it works we embrace it. As we all have professional day jobs, this is more of a hobby, but I know we are having more fun than should be legal. You can usually find us in the garage on Saturday nights, but we are always willing to play benefits and parties. Just remember that there is nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.

new songs from my upcoming cd

First of all - Woody, checked out your myspace.com/woodyinthebasement page. Good stuff - like the mando in G minor.I put 4 new songs on myspace.com/chipwithrow last night. They are all on my upcoming CD titled Everyday Things. What you will hear on myspace and on my web site, chipwithrow.com, are the rough mixes. I'm sending them off to Black Dog Studios in Tampa to get mixed and mastered this week. The songs on myspace now are special because they feature the singing debut of my 5-year-old daughter Josie ("Gnu Gnu") and my wife Anna ("Everyday Things" - she does a whistling solo too). My friend Eric Jackson (myspace.com/ericjacksonmusic) plays melodica on "Gnu Gnu" and sings background on "Hello to the Rain." What I do is folk rock with a kids/family twist. My wife is my manager, and we're putting together a whole multi-media concept with activities, educational stuff, merchandise ... I'm a teacher, and a lot of the songs have (I like to think) learning value. My wife thinks Hello to the Rain sounds like a song Weir might sing. I've been told Gnu Gnu sounds like a Phish song - I know I've seen folks grooving to it at my gigs. The VW Project - Bucks County, PA

I am a founder and the bass player for The VW Project. The VWP is a 4 piece band that plays primarily JGB material, but alas we cannot ignore the GD material and as such, we do play some Dead tunes. We can be found on the web at www.thevwproject.com or www.myspace.com/thevwproject. Currently we are in rehearsals for the "Splintered Sunlight Family Campout" produced by Who Hill. This is an all day event in Consetoga, PA (Lancaster County) with (in order of appearence) Realitive Matter, The VW Project, Moses Livingston & The Raggamuffins and Splintered Sunlight. There is vending and camping with an acoustic jam around the campfire at the night's end. Music begins at noon on September 8th and addmission is $40 in advacne, $60 day of show. The bands are not getting paid a ton of money and the addmission is to help offset the costs of producing this show. This is the third year for this event and it's a ton of fun! Tombstone Bound

The Basements / new duo

I joined a four-piece band a few months ago as bassist, and we've performed "Truckin'" at our gigs. The guitarist and I are trying to work "Tennessee Jed" into the lineup. I had an acoustic guitar duo for a couple of years, but my partner moved to Colorado, where his girlfriend lives. We used to play a lot of Dead, including a whole set's worth on the 10th anniversary of the day Jerry died. A few weeks ago, I met a very talented guitarist named Patti Spadaro who has relocated to this area (near Pittsburgh) from California, where she wowed everyone with her chops. Patti heard me playing a few Dead tunes at an informal performance and introduced herself. We decided to pair up and plan to start playing shows next month. 60S2NZ

all about my band

Our band is called "Grooveyard" ( www.myspace.com/okgrooveyard ). We exist in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. It's a beautiful place to live, wine country, a couple of driving hours north of the Washington border. That said, there's precious few heads in the area. Our band's line up is: bass, drums, percussion, lead vocal, guitars X 2. The set list used to be all Dead tunes. Now it's expanding outward somewhat. (Stevie Wonder/Allman Bros./Original tunes...) Nate (Bob Weir Guy) sings and screams, and plays guitar like bob, but also sings Jerry Tunes and plays Jerry leads (he's done a national Jerry Garcia guitar licks DVD to prove his worthiness) Larry (Phil Lesh) sings Pig songs as well as dropping the Philbomb as needed....Steve- (Mickey and Billy stuff) is prolly the hardest working of all...besides playing all the drum parts...sings a lot of Jerry Tunes while not missing a beat playing the part of 2 drummers, adding all that up creates a sort of "fantasy grateful dead" experience, while on occasion having members of the extented GD family join in playing with them makes it that more special. Tangleweed / Magnetosphere

Hey all, I saw about 40 GD/related shows between '85-'95, and have kept up with the boys in the years since, as well. I play in two Chicago groups you may be interested in: Tangleweed is a bluegrass band with a huge bag of bluegrass and jazz traditionals, rock covers and a growing list of originals. Our first two cd's have been played in over 20 countries. We recently played Wakarusa Fest in Lawrence, KS (Widespread, Sam Bush, Claypool, Stringcheese, etc...). Blue Rose rocks NW WA

If some of you remember King Fish and gigs they did in the Bay Area, you probably remember Black Rose. They opened the show for Kingfish and Garcia Saunders and played at Chateau Librete' , Keystone Berkley and placed up near Sonora and all over North California. I was the bassist, vocalist, songwriter guy in the band. Other bands I'd been in- Awsome Light Band, Point La Hasche, George Haggerty Band, Sacred Ground and The Treatment. I live north of Seattle now and my band , Blue Rose, gigs around here. It's funny, this place fits a song I wrote along time ago - Wrinkled Sunshine. Fat Wednesday

Is the name of my current outfit.check us out @ www.myspace.com/fatwednesdayband we're a 60's through 90's cover band specializing in private parties, weddings, graduations, anniversaries, etc...but we do a few bar gigs for fun too! We camp pretty heavily on the 70's, and do abut half a dozen Dead covers. Been a musician professionally for 20 years, but it's grown into a side project for me since I now have a family to feed and mortage to pay! I've recorded and played live with Steve Kimock on a number of occasions and shared the stage with acts such as Dinosaurs, Robert Hunter, Kingfish, Zero, Phish, WSP, SCI, & Blues Traveller. That's it in a nutshell.

My first masters

Izzie, I checked out the Lindells. That is some good stuff!I just uploaded 3 songs to myspace.com/chipwithrow. They are the first three mixed and mastered versions of songs on my upcoming CD "Everyday Things." It's very much the kind of CD a Deadhead with kids might want to share with the family. Black Dog Studio in Tampa is doing the mixing and mastering, and they are staying very true to my earthy sound. Call Me A One Man Band

Mostly I do original poetry with some harmonica and percussion. I like to call the band SplitSilverIntrinsic,a color combination that I created. For instance, SplitSilverPurple would be a haze of purple over a haze of silver. I have also used a tamborine. I play a bit of keyboard and some classical guitar, but it's mostly something life a beatnic type deal. It's fun, and that's what counts the most. Don't look for me in stores anytime the century. Top Dead Center does Tucson

All about my band

My name' s Alessio, i'm 37 from cerveteri, near rome - italy; i play in a band, named "the crossroads", i play the bass (got a beautiful whole black fender aerodyne jazz) and sing the leads. We play cover from the stones, jimi, cream ("i'm so glad" is my favourite one), creedence clearwater revival and so on, just having fun with classic, beautiful rock!

The Grateful Dead to me

The Grateful Dead The Grateful Dead where an amazing experience. To this day I can feel what a show felt like. The sound of a train chugging along and feeling the power that just descended onto this far away city for a couple days. When I would visit Northern Cali just North of San Fran when I was twisting and turning on those dusty roads in the middle of nowhere on the way to visit friends, I would feel the power and the influence of the Grateful Dead. The positive vibes and the thought of a complex world and knowledge truly drew me in after the music had enlightened me. The Grateful Dead scene ended as we knew it in 1995, but this complex and influential world is carried on. Everyone on this site is evidence to this. It’s strange that I perceive the word "complex' as being a negative notion these days, but when I speak of complex in this comment it has more of a positive and discovering overtone to it. Anyway, this world was carried forward in my life after the Dead stopped touring until I could not hold on any longer. The bus stopped for me while I was back stage "Clinic" at my last Phish show in Mountain View Cali 2000, as I found myself disenchanted with my connection to Phish which extended beyond 175 + shows. It was not just Phish’s fault it was just the need for change and everyone who has followed similar foot steps can attest to this. The road is for gamblers and as good as we may at surviving the end has to come and you must turn the page. I my bones need some patching and books seemed the way to patch them and whenever I lifted my head from the books I jumped on an airplane to faraway places and then returned to the States and studied more. I have a compulsive personality so when I do something I get into it and there is no stopping me from finding the core. This too was influenced by the Dead because I always related the GD to intelligence and far away places and the Core. I remember reading Relex and there was a section called “We Are Everywhere,” and we are and there are reasons why we are everywhere. These days I listen to a lot of Dead and Jazz. As there is a good Jazz club in town and it is actually the oldest Jazz club in China so it has a lot of history to it as well. Gangsters and the Shanghai underworld back in the 20s and 30’s. I recall the first time I went to a Jazz club. The decision to go to this club, knowing that I was way underage and there was no way that I could have anything other than a cup of coffee, was based on the fact that I wanted to get closer to the music of the Grateful Dead. To this very day the Grateful Dead influence me and I hope that my children embrace this experience as much as I had. So far so good! Free Beer at Exit 80

Just about 7 years of playing in the band, unbelievable. We are from Roslyn WA (Northern Exposure's Cicely Alaska) and play an eclectic mix of covers and originals. At first we couldn't figure out what to call ourselves, so just before our first gig the bar manager says "so what are we going to call you, Free Beer?" and it stuck. We tried to change it many times for a number of reasons, especially trying to book gigs outside of Roslyn, not to many places want "Free Beer" printed outside their establishment. Exit 80 was our last attempt and it sort of stood the test of time. So really we have three names (1) Free Beer at Exit 80, (2) Free Beer, or (3) Exit 80, its a slight case of identity crisis. A couple of us are Heads and try to point us in that direction. I prefer the experimental aspect of playing music, what's life without a few risks. Sometimes we have our moments, and I guess that's what keeps me going. There are few feelings that can compare with meshing musically with people to the point when the "music plays the band." I want to jam on GD songs with those who know the material.

Hey now! I have been trying to get back on this site for a while. I attended the first 2 D&Co shows at the Forum, and the 3rd one in Phoenix - I was right in front of Oteil, and he saw my Fur Peace Ranch Alumni T-shirt and gave me a shout out after "Feels Like a Stranger" - big dual grin there. My wife and I went to all three of the final San Francisco shows in July. I would very much like to find some people to jam with who know and love this music. Not "fan" stuff - musician stuff, and playing it well and right. I am very much into putting on a professional show with the "right" chords, etc. I've played electric with Jorma Kaukonen, and he approved of my ability. 100 miles east of the Bay Area. I know how to "sound like the record", not just blast it out. Is there anybody out there? Help on the way? Anybody? Thanks!

Bay Area Americana Band Seeks female harmony singer

Vince Charming Band is gigging all over NorCal, but we need a harmony singer. We're influenced by the Americana side of the Dead and most certainly by the Hunter/Garcia songwriting team. We have tons of gigs, but our sound really need a female harmony singer. If that person could also play an instrument well, that would be a bonus, but skilled harmony singing would suffice. I'm in the Boulder/Denver…

I'm in the Boulder/Denver area.

I was playing in a band called Wrecking Trains (rock/blues) for about 8-10 years, but it's kind of broken up. We released a self produced album called Hot Rod Love. I also like to play with my wife as the Tracy Weiser Project, she's got an amazing voice. All this stuff is easy to find on Reverb Nation.

But I am looking to form more of a jam type of band, creative, original tunes. What I really need is a keyboard/piano player. I think adding those sounds to the songs I write could really evolve into something fun.
