“This is one of the most thrilling albums the Grateful Dead ever produced, mixing portions of live recordings from the first six months of Mickey's tenure with the band, along with studio experimentations that would hint at where the Dead would go when they started recording to 16-track tape the following year. The 1971 remix, produced in order to make the album more accessible to the newer fans who were brought on board with WORKINGMAN'S DEAD and AMERICAN BEAUTY, has been the most commonly heard version for the past 45+ years. However, having this side-by-side with the original 1968 mix demonstrates countless differences, with the original mix being more primal, psychedelic, and experimental. Add to this the first extant live recording featuring Mickey as a member of the Grateful Dead, and you have a very special release in every way.” - David Lemieux

We're continuing our 50th anniversary reissue series with ANTHEM OF THE SUN: 50th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION, due July 13th. Released 50 years after its anniversary date, this two-disc deluxe version features a double dose of the original album - one fully remastered from the original 1968 mix and the other remastered from the more well-known 1971 mix - as well as a bonus disc of a previously unreleased complete live show recorded on October 22, 1967 at Winterland in San Francisco, CA. Newly remastered by Jeffrey Norman, this is the first known recording of the Grateful Dead with Mickey Hart, who joined the band in September 1967. The first run will come with a special lenticular of the cover.

Problem with playing my FLAC of American Beauty 50th

I would LOVE to purchase the FLAC of Anthem's 50th, but why would I when I purchased the FLAC of American Beauty's 50th and can get no customer assistance for the problem I have had with it since day 1?
I have not been able to play the FLAC in any form besides one song at a time, which would drive anyone nuts--and which I did not pay for.
I have kindly requested help from gratefuldead@gnarlywoodstore.com and I am ignored.
I even got the automatic reply for a ticket having been created (March 12th, 10:09 A.M.), but have heard nothing but crickets.
I'm sure they are busy, but this is ridiculous.
Anyone else have any of these problems?
Is this kind behavior? Is this what we elderly people used to call "Dead Etiquette"? I don't think so...

Another Bear recording awesome so many years ago. Jerry sure did play fast and Phil was a locomotive! Cool recording to release. Vocals are a little low, heck I'm just grateful he recorded this rumbling early show.

I'm old. I've been listening to Anthem since it came out, I was just a kid. Wore out I don't know how many LPs. Anthem, IMHO, is one of the most amazing albums and still lights up the noggin' to this day. The 71 mix just sounds off to me. Bleached of the detail. I guess it's hard to hear with new ears as time marches on. I'm happy people enjoy the 71 mix. If it puts a smile on your face, it's good stuff.

I got my notification, too. I'll be out and about tomorrow, so I am hoping it will fit through the letter box alright, and be here waiting when I return from my travels. This has been a pretty good year for releases, so far, with a 1971 Daves, the record store day 1969 show on vinyl, Binghampton 1970 on vinyl and now this 1973-74 box set.

Not sure I am going to get this..if someone checks out the live disc let me know..the quality of that disc performance wise will make the difference. I have already bought the new box set and will be burning friend's Dave's Picks when that comes in early August. Lots of music.

I haven't read the small print, or compared it the previous version that came out, but the 1968 mix sounds incredible. Dripping with colour. I haven't listened to all of the 1971 mix yet, but "The Other One" sounded a bit louder than the 1968 mix, and the instruments seem more conventionally balanced. I haven't got to the live disc yet, either. The covers good, too. I guess I am lucky enough to have got what nappyrags referred to as a lenticular cover. Its a 3D slipcase-looks great!

Those wondering if Amazon was shipping the Lenticular Slip Case - the answer is Yes! Yes! Yes! Wow that looks amazing, imagine the fun we would have with these visuals on those extracuriculars. Talk about watching cinderblock walls breathing - Picture yourself on a boat on a river... Too busy workwise, so no first listen yet. Will rip to itunes while I shovel myself out of work.

The HDCD insignia is on the back cover, but I have not read the liner notes. One 1st world issue - the cool gold SYF 50th Anniversary sticker is upside down if you look at the cover properly. Was able to flip it without ripping but now sticker on back is upside down. Anyways nice packaging, if the music is as good as expected great job GDP and Rhino. Thanks Dave and Dr Rhino!

downloaded at work to listen to in car on the way home from work. The 68 mix seemed very flat, not a lot of bass, but the high end was very present and clean. The remix had tons more bass and the vocals were more up front, sounded like a little reverb gave them some space. At home - listening on computer with bose speakers, which is my main mode of listening at home, the original mix sounded great - nice bass, clean high end, a wide spectrum of sounds. The remix still had the extra base, the vocals more present, but overall, did not seem to have as many tones or colors as the original. Sounds like the remix was designed to sound better on crappy speakers and the original requires better equipment to sound good. At some point I'll listen with head phones to get a third point of view. Overall, not a significantly remixed release. The 68 mix sounds a lot like the album, but no pops and clicks and the high end separation and clarity is better than what I remember my vinyl to be like. I had been hoping the remix would fix some of the "flatness" of the vocals, like at the beginning of born cross eyed, bobby's vocal is a bit one dimensional. The live recording is certainly raw and rough, but charming in the energy and shear force of moving forward through some complicated songs. Refreshing to hear the snarl of the guitar after listening to so much 70's (which I like).

I listened to the remix last night, and it sounds as though it was mixed to sound more up to date, for 1971, to me. It sounds more like a "rock" album, with Bobs rhythm guitar much more prominent-especially on "Alligator" and "Caution". The 1968 version, as we have all been told countless times, was mixed for the hallucinations-and that's what it still sounds like-guitars, keyboards, unexpected instruments and electronic sound effects appear and disappear without warning or logic. A mesmeric album. I like both versions-but the 1968 mix is the one. The live recording sounds quite rough when it starts. But for me, every recording-literally-from this timespan-is essential. Mickey seemed to add weight to the proceedings immediately, so that even the break neck romps sound more substantial than they had earlier in the year. Either the sound gets better, or I get more attuned to it, as it goes on. The "Lovelight" here features less Pigpen than latterly, but is powered along convincingly by the two drummers and Jerry's quicksilver guitar licks. "The Other One" is great-its not just the words that are different, Jerry's soloing is stratospheric, and goes where no man had been before. I love everything about this release.

So back to the earlier question from Chad: "I am interested in comparing the 2 versions of AOTS, but am even more excited about the 10/22/67 release as the great sounding Charlie Miller treated recordings on archive have the Lovelight cut.... THE REAL QUESTION IS: DOES THE DEAD HAVE THE ORIGINAL MASTERS OF THIS SHOW IN THE VAULT?, AND IF SO .... DO THEY HAVE THE ENTIRE LOVELIGHT?" Is there help on the way for The Chad?

Listened last night to the 10-22-67 show with my buddy Steve-o at his cabin in the foothills northwest of Denver and it slayed us. The band is becoming a very capable unit and every song and its execution is so real, kinda raw but kinda sophisticated, especially the Anthem material. The sound quality varies subtly, sometimes vocals a wee bit distant, sometimes Pigpen is right there in the room. Great jamming. Pigpen's organ is all over the show and he and Garcia often lock in with each other; it's the most involved and musically adept organ playing by Pig I've heard. The bass is a bit boomy and imprecise (sound-wise), but not a detriment to the show and feel. Worth the price of the pkg, and why I bought it. A great show I'll revisit.

I am thinking that 9/2/68 would be the most logical live disc to include with the next release in this series. Or maybe Avalon 10/68? Depends on which master reel is in the best shape.

I have 'em all. But what a joy to be able to revisit the early studio stuff with a more mature perspective. Alligator pretty much foreshadows the Drums/Rhythm Devils portion of each live show to come for the next 50 years. (And counting! Just saw the ATL show.) But the live disc (10/22/67 Winterland) is the bomb. The Morning Dew opener surpasses the Morning Dew closer from Two From The Vault (08/23-24/68) by being less jarring and more Phil-centric.

Since I was 12 or 13 years old, live albums that had songs which faded out drove me insane. They still do, but I agree with stoltzfus, in this case, I gladly accept anything and everything I can get concerning Live Dead, especially from this era. When live songs fade, I just can't help wondering what greatness I'm missing. But I sometimes imagine that the tape ran out, and they're saving us from a cold, dead stop. This makes me feel better, for some stupid reason.

I am sure they didn't! Live it must have been great. I only experienced one Lovelight live-in London 1990 sung by Bob Weir. I don't rate Weir's versions very highly when I am listening at home-in fact its years since I've tried one-but live it was a different story-great fun. I can remember during the one I heard there seemed to be an unrelated telephone call coming out of one of the amplifiers. Very strange.

I'm wondering if the next re-issues will be multi-disc shows or compilations to keep the package at 2 discs or 1 disc for the re-issued album and 2 or 3 discs for a complete show? Any thoughts? Obviously we'd like complete shows but are people willing to pony up for a multi disc package?

Of course people are prepared to pay what is asked, no matter what is offered. We see this all the time here. We cannot help ourselves. If subsequent 50th anniversary reissues are accompanied by a full show from the same period as the album in question, then everyone will purchase irrespective of how many discs it comprises. I, and probably most others, would rather have more discs and a higher price tag to get a full show that to get a single disc best of a show. Bring 'em on!

Big thanks to David, Rhino, Mr. Norman, and everyone involved. The two album mixes are fun to have---another '67 concert in high quality a delight. The '68 mix has the bells and whispers and filagrees throughout; '71 mix takes much of them out, but improves bass and vocals, and smooths several studio-to-live transitions. As noted, the '71 mix has the big ending chord on Born Cross-Eyed (who thought not to include that in '68?). But '68 has a more extended Caution finish that in the right mood is quite ethereal--love the near-end finger cymbal hits. Just right. Don't hesitate to get it.

My reticulated, tentacled, synapse-tickling and last but not least, most lenticularly encapsulated copy arrived aujourd'hui (albeit 2 days late: shipping delay). I headed straight for Disc 1 Track 6 and the '71 remaster, then proceeded to disc 2 and made it to BIODTL on my virgin listen. As someone that did not purchase the anniversary edition of the first album, I am quite satisfied with this edition, as I figured I ought to be. Anthem is a classic album and they certainly did the album justice with this package. The sound is fantastic to my ears. Thanks Dead.net! Nice well done booklet as well. BTW, what is that logo on the last page with the blue and red? Not sure I've seen that on releases before...

An accompanying concert would be nice. Aoxomoxoa might be a 1 cd concert. Both with Live/Dead and Europe 72 accompanying concerts have already been released, so I wonder what they'll come up with. Skull and Roses could be more material from April 71

I'm old enough to remember when, after 2 years of our listening to the original lp, one of the deadhead college group played the 71 remix. No one liked the new mix over the original then, especially the chord ending BCE on side one. Listening to that mix now, many many years later, to my ears it sounds like something run through a 1970's Dolby noise reduction filter: the high end is seriously clipped and, while a few vocals and instruments are brought upfront, most everything else seems muddied. "Anthem" has always been one of my favorites, it had a crazy live jam aspect that in the early 70's was hard to find with good sound quality, other than Live Dead. Fortunately there have been lots of great live sets of the 68-70 material released over time. I do like the live material on disc 2, but parts are super-speed induced (Cold Rain and Snow), pretty much like the first album. Nice packaging and notes, everyone does a terrific job in providing the historical context for these releases.

So I expect a one-CD show from late '68, early '69 for Aoxamoxoa. Then it's on to Workingman's and American Beauty -- shows from those eras will be sweet, but two years off(?)...

Maybe they will release "Workingmans" one year and "American Beauty" the following year. As "Europe 72" was heavily overdubbed in the studio, making it something of a hybrid, maybe that could count as the studio album for the year after that. I shudder to think how old I will be by the time we get to "Built To Last".
