"We were in the Pacific Northwest...between somewhere in Washington and some other where in Oregon. The road took us to the lip on a ridge, from where we could see around us for many miles in all directions … It was breathtaking to behold, but as we watched, we had a firm realization that we were witnessing something even more beautiful than our eyes could ever take in … Life causes life. Heaven and Earth dance in this way endlessly, and their child is the forest. And so there we were, epiphanously watching that grandest and most glorious dance of life—of which we are just a tiny part—awed by a magnificence without beginning, without end..."

Bob Weir, “Sell Headwaters—Everyone Wins,” San Francisco Chronicle

The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS comes in an ornate box created by Canada’s preeminent First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers (more on this tremendous artist soon). To complement the music, the set also includes a 64-page book with an in-depth essay by Grateful Dead scholar Nicholas G. Meriwether and photos by Richie Pechner.

Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net. You'll want to grab a copy while you can and sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day. You can pre-order it now too.

    Get it while you can.

Is this box now sold out? They list it, but it seems like that is just some old data. Great set. I love it, but I don't have it physically. Not a huge deal, but it is very lovely.

I keep going back to this box - superb. Especially the 1974 shows. I went so far as to get 5/19/74 and the Playing in the Band from 5/21/74 on vinyl. There are a few problems with vocals on both, but this matters not a jot. The playing, as you say, from all band members, is absorbing. After 1970 they only needed Bill on drums.

I also agree with icecrmcnkd - a box of October 1974 with bells and whistles would make a great release.

Late to the party, but ...

... just wanted to share how delighted I am with the music in this set, and encourage anyone who’s not taken the plunge to just go ahead and get it already.

There’s been some chatter in another thread about how long it’s taking to sell out this box, and all I can say is that, as much as I love ’73 and ’74, I didn’t order mine till Rhino put it on sale. Maybe some people are settling for the 3-disc version, which is understandable, given the difference in price and given that they did manage to include some very high highlights (including the 45 minute PITB!) in that set.

Also causing some hesitation for me was the packaging. Don’t get me wrong: it’s beautiful! The art work is amazing. But speaking as someone who already has problems finding shelf space for my CDs, I wasn’t sure where I’d put this giant box. (In case anybody upstairs is listening: I thought the June 1976 box really hit the sweet spot between packaging that was elaborate enough to make the box feel special but also small enough to not cause problems.)

Anyway, the music. The MUSIC. For me, this era was flat out the best the band ever sounded, and it’s an incredible joy to hear them in such fine audio. There are a few “surprises,” the kind of vocal drop outs and oddities in the mix that would’ve rated a “caveat” back in the Dick’s days. Mostly, these are very temporary, and in all cases the sound is really really good once everybody settles in. As usual, Jerry’s louder than Bob, but you can hear them both very distinctly, and they constantly (constantly!) are playing their asses off. Phil’s on fire throughout. And BK? He makes a solid case here that the Dead never needed another drummer. Keith comes through nicely, and plays well. I suppose we could say that the vocals were erratic during this period, and I would admit that’s true here. But the singing is mostly good to great, and man oh man, the band sounds fantastic!

I’ve only listened to each show once so far—given the complaints about missing discs and whatnot, I felt like I should make a point of listening all the way through to make sure nothing was amiss—so I’m not really ready to call out a favorite show, or even favorite tunes. But I will say that the PITBs, the Bird Songs, the Eyes, the China-Riders are all, for me, as good as they get. Their playing was so spontaneous, so open, so powerful, so much soul, so imperfectly perfect.

Yes, I suppose there are other, equally worthy eras. But man, ’73 and ’74 were beautiful.

The hour or so of music from He's Gone through the end of Wharf Rat is one of the top 5 hours of music the dead ever played.

There, I said it. This box is worth every penny for that hour of music alone.

Testing with Lossless Audio Checker shows the June 1976 FLAC download in 24/192 format ( https://store.dead.net/music/digital/june-1976-flac-192-24-1.html ) and the Pacific Northwest '73-'74- The Complete Recordings FLAC download in 24/192 ( https://store.dead.net/music/boxed-sets/pacific-northwest-73-74-the-com… ) to be "Upsampled." I have notified Jeffrey Norman and Rhino. I sent Jeffrey the logs of the LAC test results showing 80% of the June 76 files being upsampled. While he was very nice in his response, he had no explanation for the finding. Rhino has not responded to any e-mails. It is important to note that the files on both test “Clean” after downsampling to 24/96, which, likely, means the files, were originally digitized at 24/96 or digitized at 24/192 and downsampled to 24/96 for mastering. Whatever the case Rhino needs to disclose this fact on their web site or change the files for sale to 24/96.

No worries, not trying to further stir the pot, but the first part of your post, the part referencing the guy's relationship with his family and insinuating some sort of abusive upbringing just seemed beyond the pale. The second part of your post seemed OK, but maybe follow some of your own advice. Being rude or cruel to someone you disagree with or that you feel is being obnoxious can be immensely gratifying in the short term, no doubt, but making references to another person's family members or a persons relationship with their family really seems to go to far except in extreme cases, like right before you punch someone in the face.

....nah. I'm not talking about anyone here, but a cool hardcore punk band from D.C. Check 'em out if you can handle them. I only listen to them in the car, because Mrs. Vguy yells at me when I play them at home. I love running errands.

There are definitely musical choices better left for when the wife is out of the house. Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd in particular seem to put my wife in a negative frame of mind. With the dead, it's all about the dose - if I don't play too much of it when she's around, then when I do play it she digs it, if I run it she lets me know she's heard enough.

For my tastes a pair of nice floorstanding speakers in a 2 channel stereo set up is it. I have a headphone aversion due to highly irresponsible Walkman use - I'd get really high before catching the school bus, or on it depending on who was around, and crank my Walkman up to ear damaging volumes for the lengthy ride to high school. Foolish youth.

Thanks for the recommendations. Dogon - Baba Zula sound very intriguing with the Turkish stringed instrument the Saz . The US version of XX is a single disc but the UK version is 2 disc. I think I'd give the UK the nod as far as purchasing. Charlie3 - I'll look into William Onyeabor, Melody Prochet, and Chris Joss. I have quite a few TYA CDs and would recommend 'Ssssh'; The purely lascivious 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl' rivals any version Pigpen ever did. I consider Clinton/Funkadelic the AfroDead for their tendency to heavily dose before shows...always a good time. ErikandJenn - Hell yes Lone Justice are Alt Country. In the early 80s a music journalist called their music as well as Rank & File, Violent Femmes and others 'Cowpunk'. I still LMAO when I think about it. A favorite Alt Country album is Whiskeytown's 'Stranger's Almanac'. If you take the plunge purchase the remastered 2 disc version. It's worth the extra $.

I have studied US History for 55 years love the Constitution and believe it to be the most perfect document written by man. Of course being written by man it was deeply flawed for which we paid a deep price in blood. 700,000 lives to be exact. Fantastic clip of Quicksilver Messenger Service. There's also a great film on youtube of them playing Who Do You Love at The Winterland in December 1973. I always thought they'd shot their bolt by then-but that is one of the best treatments of that Bo Diddley beat that I have ever heard. The pictures a bit grainy-but the music is incandescent.

But one thing is for sure, I don't know you, thank God for that, life is to short to have as*holes and bullies as acquaintances, they just....suck. I will say this about you, your moniker is correct, you are all fuc*ed up.

In the description above it states "Due September 7th, this release is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and available exclusively from dead.net." What does "Due September 7th" mean? Due to ship, due in the warehouse, due at your doorstep?????? I am hoping this ships early in order to listen to this on Labor Day weekend but I'm not banking on that.

Come on unkle sam, it is clear that you were talking to snafu in the earlier post that he responded to, at least own it - I mean you are constantly suggesting that snafu wouldn't dare say these things to your face, and now you are going to cop out with your passive-aggressive "how do you know I was talking about you" statement? Come on, if you are going to engage in a running feud with another poster and make us all read your hostility and your dubious political insights as if it provides some value, at least step up and own it. I don't really care what you post about, but at least own it, don't post attacks on someone and then try to pretend you are not. That is really some weak b.s. And yes, if you were here I would say this to your face, whether you are a physically intimidating behemoth or not. Edit: To clarify, the point of my last statement was that if an ass-kicking is the price of speaking my mind, sign me up, I'm willing to pay the price. Based on unkle sam's prior statements referencing saying things to his face, it seems he is implicitly threatening physical intimidation or violence towards those expressing viewpoints or arguments that he finds distasteful when in his presence. That is a dangerous proposition to accept without comment.

...there is my ever increasing sense of anticipation about this PNW box, both the music and the box it comes in. I have been on a lower level of GD listening lately, partly to kind of clear my palate for this box and partly because I picked up a few new discs that I am working my way through. I see that the next Real Gone Road Trips reissue is due to release on September 7th as well, the Big Rock Pow Wow '69 show which I had previously missed. So I see a glut of GD in September for me.

The only female band member of the Good Old Grateful Dead hit the big 71 today (8/22/1947) 71? Hmmm... as in 1971? many, many good to excellent GD shows in that year; a nice sampling of those shows have been officially released, so far; 1971 in Grateful Dead performing history is one fan's favorite year. Yet on the downside, Donna sometimes shreeked through the music. There were a few Playing In The Band that her "vocals" made a mess of, and a few other songs... Getting back to the upside, I for one wish her a happy birthday and continued good health.

This garbage has helped me finally address a problem I've been dancing with for about a year now.Do I have enough GD? The answer now is yes. I've got tons. If the powers that be are willing to let this place turn to shit like the rest of the world so be it. Like has been discussed here many times before I can get it for free elsewhere. When I get that itch that's what I'll do from here on out. I would rely on the dead.net e-mails for critical announcements, but that means I would probably miss out anyway as the e-mails come usually about the same time as something has sold out. Adios amigos...

And so too, will this odd skirmish that's been going on around here lately. I would suggest, no one any longer antagonize anyone publicly, and, like a child, not getting the attention they crave they will just fade away. It's definitely not cool to hijack and spam these boards. How about, we offer amnesty, and you stop deliberately trying to hi-jack the page and annoy everyone. There must be a reason you were here in the first place - an interest in the Grateful Dead. So you do have some redeeming value as a human being. Why not revisit that, and give us some more classic, rare Jer photos. Something of value. Take my advice, and all is forgiven. \m/

It looks like they did disable his account. And it looks like he opened a new one with a similar spelling. The current one has only been a member for 4 hours. This is laughable almost, because it's in line with dreading's info from customer support. Laughable because they are monitoring him lol. Now that he has their attention, I'm sure they have enough data after that most recent round of spamming to press charges if they want to. It wouldn't matter if he used a fake email address to register the new user name - at this point they know his IP address, which is associated with his ISP (internet service provider, like Comcast or Verizon), as well as his computer or cell phone's MAC address. The MAC address is the hardware serial number of his device, which is on file with whomever he bought the device from. So, there's a database of MAC addresses, and they're distributed in blocks to various hardware vendors. A competent System Administrator can make inquiries into which vendor a MAC address belongs to. Daednet now can most likely tell what kind of computer he's using and which of his ISP's routers his login originated from. So they're like a call or email away from reporting the abuse to his internet company. They'll shut his shit down if there is a significant amount of data to establish what he's doing. They take that shit seriously when there's business impact. This page isn't just a message board - it's the place people have to go to buy a box set that's not sold out. He's screwed. And while an ISP is under no obligation to turn over his personal info (they can't legally, it has to be subpoenaed), deadnet may already have it if he's ever bought anything here (even under a different username, like Terrapin Moon for example). Only thing they need to do is scan their logs for his MAC address and see if it's associated with a deadnet sales record. The funny thing is that he re-signed up after being disabled!

http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2013/03/pigpen-photo-album.html We'll talk and screech madly through the night in heated arguments about the Witch doctors of Africa as versus the Hindus of India and Voodoo men of the West Indies. We'll howl through eons whilst Charlie Mingus puts it down and Luigi's hot rod in his Persian-rugged attic roars like a drunken mouse with his head caught under the feet of Dali's stilted elephants. Why doesn't the middle class put up? because they've got their all holy standards warped! They must dig the life of calm quiet suburbia; until their tract-house orgies are bared. But, we'll howl, rant, scream kick and pick up on frothing sounds - loud cascading forth over Peyote rocks and crashing into ourselves, pierced with flats - sharps and that crazy sound: off minor. Read? - don't play it high society isn't so bad it's the tract-house and 20,000 - 60,000 class that's got middleclass values up to here and who picture themselves as clairvoyant white knights destined to save me, or us - they boil my blood. Dean Moriarty roars into the Opus One at 3:30 a.m.... "Ron! how you been? Crazy! Look Jack, we got a lookin' all so clean gig goin' over Hunter's Point so let's splee this one an' make that!" That cat Moriarty from the Doldrums is just about so crazy as a man can be. "Dean, I, Speedy, Linda, Sammi, Breeze, Yvette, Carlo and many unknowns hold wild atheistic meetings and we sit around and not pray and drink we do, swear, blaspheme - etc. because we have no god." This is what Jon Kreebson writes of himself. Now who knows what howling times we have in crazy grottos of the city while Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, and Kerouac sit in the spot; many crazy, unsuspecting poets know me in the place. They put the aforementioned in with Chaucer and his cohorts. Howl over pebbled craziness with cascading jive marrying Peyote in a wild explosion frescoed with intermingling and crazy peace of mind. Lateef wailing blue. --R.C. McKernan
