i work at a hotel and have a little bit of advice always call the hotel before booking online to check rates....constantly i deal with very irate guest who thought they where getting a deal on-line and who are paying $50 to $100 more than booking directly with us. one good place online is booking.com they usual are cheaper than the hotel. ..

Well, you'll be just a few minutes walk to the south of Little Osaka (a.k.a. Japantown) and maybe a 15 minute walk north of the City Hall and the Opera House. There are plenty of restaurants in Little Osaka, the best of which is a place called Bushi-Tei. This is a very cool French/Japanese fusion restaurant. You sit family style at long tables with other diners and you'll eat dishes that you honestly won't find anywhere else. Good wine list too! The Web site is:
http://bushi-tei.com/
I'd also save a few bucks for a visit to Indigo. This place is located near the Opera House at 687 McAllister Street. Good food, great wine selection and you'll be in one of the prettiest parts of the city. The Web site can be found here:

Is Eddy street pretty close to the venue? Within walking distance?

Golden Gate Park & the Ocean
The park starts in the Haight, I would use JFKennedy Drive thru the park as it passes so many places to stop and enjoy. Almost to the Polo Field where the Human Be In was held is a herd of buffalo that have been in the park for 60 yrs or more. I think they have over 20 acres but they feed near JFK drive and are good to see. You will pass the meadows where many concerts were held. When you get to the Pacific you will be close to where Playland and the Family Dog at the Beach was. It is all gone now, replaced by condos but you are at the base of a rise where the Cliff House is with its grand views of the Pacific. There is a nice park up there on the inland side of the street, Sutro Heights, again with good views. Just past the Cliff House and on the ocean side are the ruins of Sutro Baths from probably the 20's or before. It's fun to hike around the ruins. There is a large dirt parking lot above the Cliff House and paths from there leading down into the ruins. The viewpoints at each end of the Golden Gate Bridge are wonderful. On the SF side the cutoff may be called Fort Mason but I get mixed up. It is right before you start across the bridge so stay in the right hand lane so you don't miss the cutoff. From there you get a view from under the bridge. The viewpoint on the Sausalito or Marin Co. side is bridge height and you see the bay and the city. San Francisco is beautiful. Enjoy. I think anywhere you go you will be pleased. It is a city of hills, vista upon vista. Ride the cablecar for sure.
Docks/Richard....
The dirt parking lot (of our youth) was paved over within the last 5 or 10 years (unfortunately) The ruins of Sutro Baths are still there-nice to hike down to....I think JackStraw is referring to Bill Graham Civic Center, which is near city hall, probably within 10 blocks of Eddy st.when yall coming out again?
Thanks gypsy
Actually I see there are some hotels really close to the civic auditorium. I am working hard on trying to get back out there. Had such a fantastic time over new years plus it feels like I need to be there to celebrate with Phil.

as I recall
both the Mitchell Bros are now dead, one of them having been shot to death by his brother. But I could be misremembering this colorful bit of local history.
i too remember
hearing that in the news...but i dunno if the surviving brother is still alive
as I recall
he passed on a few years back.
The porn palace lives on, however.

After a 14 hours of work you make my day. Something else I should know? Still LMAO.

Question for the north Cali natives
Driving down Oregon, is it worth it to cut over to Hwy 101 and drive through the Redwoods down to San Fran or is it advisable to just stay on I-5? According to Google Maps it takes almost 3 extra hours to drive down 101 rather than I-5. It's been a good 20 years since I have been through the Redwoods and I'd like to check it out again but wont if it is a driving nightmare.
Thanks for any advice!

my feeling
Weather conditions permitting, come down one way and go back the other.
While you're in town this month
go to Macy's. Honest. It's MS Awareness month this month, and a whole bunch of the area's best rock photographers have donated incredible photos for sale to benefit the cause. Many of the pix are on display at Macy's Union Square.
If you've REALLY got money to burn, you can buy your own, too! But you can at least admire the images here.
among said photos
are some of the famous Herbie Greene pics of the boys. Also lots of Jim Marshall stuff. Etc.
and if you're coming out for the annual Jerry Day concert
in August, make a week of it and stay for the Jerrry Tribute at the Giants game, which is also a benefit for Rex!
very nice pics
Thanks Marye for the info..

Redwood drive
Wow, jackstraw, that sounds like a really cool ride, Drive thru the redwoods on the way to a furthur show. Man, that would be great. If ya go that way, can you get some pics? I haven't been thru there since the 60's, and I was just a kid then. Hey, is that one redwood you could drive thru still there? I seem to remember that they had to cut that one down. Anyway, have lotta fun.
Highway 101
Its a great drive for sure..one of the best anywhere..have done it a few times; it makes your arms tired but it's worth it. But the one time I hitch-hiked it I ended up trapped in the back of a car by two crazies with a gun and a bottle of Southern Comfort debating whether they were going to kill me or not. Maybe I'll tell the full story some time..needless to say I escaped.
Redwoods,riding with hoods....
Holy moly cosmicbadger,if you can connect that story with "Going to San Francisco"don't keep us in suspense.I thumbed through the redwoods on 101 many times. There are some scary ol' "redbillies" in them thar hills....
P.S. I'll look around the forums to see if there is a more appropriate topic to share our "times we were scared s**tless and thought we had seen our last show "stories....
It's a long road....
Willits is my particular" vortex of darkspirit ".I would hesitate to single out Humboldt County(in spite of it's reputation),I lived there in Fortuna and attended 'The College of the Redwoods'.It's a long road from Cabrillo to Crescent City, along that road you will encounter redneck hairbillies, green meanies, happy heads and snoopy feds, the full spectrum of college students and summer tourists....Yet above it all and in the matted roots of the groves the spirit of the Redwoods supercedes all,the Turtle abides....
If you're going to be in SF April 9
head over to the Great American for this one!

Canadian invasion
Hey Richard, GC, Mary, et al...
We're hopping on the "band" wagon too... My partner Brent & I are planning a trip to San Fran, hopefully for summer 2011. We're from Peterborough, Ontario, and have never had a chance to go further south than Vancouver. I'm so glad to find this thread and grateful for all the good advice. My partner is a prof/Dead scholar and we'll be looking at the city from an historic GDead lens. Is there still a GD productions office or has it all moved to Rhino?
Richard - j'espère que toi et Marjelaine passent de très bonnes vacances! Un peu de reportage ici après ton voyage sera beaucoup apprécié. Merci!
I don't think
there's an official presence up here, except maybe GDTSTOO which springs into life periodically, but I don't think you'll have any shortage of spots worth checking out and folks worth seeing...
