    Deer Creek, ah, the memories
In 1990 I had decided to step up my touring. Instead of just seeing shows that were with 5-6 hours, I went to everything I could, no matter how I had to get there. Deer Creek memories are always vivid because the place was so huge and there were so many people there. With my younger bro. and a bunch of his friends, I hit the Deer Creek shows only a couple of weeks after the show at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, KY. Right now my memory is fuzzy about what other venues I went to during the '90 summer tour...gotta get the stack of old stubs out to help spark an this old man's memory. LOL When they went from Victim to Foolish Heart, I knew this show would be a great tape to have. LOL Not long after the tour I had that tape. For me, it was great to hear TLEO, Althea, Foolish and Uncle John's Band. Who knew that we were seeing some the last few shows with Brent. I too enjoyed the Brent years most of all. At Deer Creek, I was always happy to be on the lawn because I didn't have to show my ticket stub every time I wanted to move around. We danced all night, and I had a fun time watching the spinners on the right side of the stage, just outside the pavilion. As always, the party just intensified after the show because you could get away with hanging out and partying for hours in those days (after the show). Everyone raged. When we finally had to leave, we took the party back to the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indy. They had an awesome breakfast in one of the greatest breakfasts buffets I'd ever seen. Everyone but me slept through the breakfast period, so to be kind, I took numerous plates of grub back to the suites for the others. Quite simply - another magical night with the Grateful Dead.

    a fine second set
but for me the real prize of this show was the Desolation Row > Row Jimmy. I was there and maybe that is why, but i was at the Alpine shows the previous summer and while that Desolation Row is wonderful... this one is absolutely magnificent. I remember the hairs on the back of my neck standing up during Garcia's soloing in Row Jimmy. The second set smoked for sure - we were all grinning as i recall but that 1st set pairing was like the first coke-high for me... i just couldnt get it back again:) If you think im just being a whimsical nostalgic acidhead, listen for yourself! :) Enjoy!!! http://www.archive.org/details/gd1990-07-19.sbd.miller.32354.sbeok.flac…

a rather weak first set gave way to a MONSTER second. Victim had finally come into its own as a set piece jam, Playin' jammed HARD into a transcendant China Doll, and Watchtower blew the doors off the place. I had to lie on the hillside for half an hour after the lights came up before I could refocus.

I was at this show. I agree about the first set. The China Doll actully brought tears to my eyes. And I always liked Not Fade at the end of a show. I hear they are getting rid of Deer Creek and building a housing development. I could be wrong, though. Do not adjust your mind, It is reality that is malfunctioning.

It was only a week or so later when tragedy struck. RIP Brent. I love you. These shows and the last 8 or so tours were awesome. I am so sad at how it had to change. For me, losing Brent was hard. It would never be the same. When I see videos of his shows and see Jerry smiling and Brent smiling back I am driven tot tears. Brent's years were the greatest years of the band. They were lucky to have him!

I remember being on the lawn and seeing fireworks in the distance off to the right during "strange fingers of light " of China Doll. It only lasted a minute or so, and it was pretty far away, and I remember thinking that the ppl closer to the stage couldn't even see it because of the trees or something.Anyone else see that? I'm pretty sure I wasn't hallucinating...

This show was magical. Looking over set lists from 20 years or so ago usually brings back vague memories. This a show which my strong memories of 1 moment sent me looking for the setlist. I remember the day as a beautiful July day. I started off at the Cincinnati Zoo studying colobus monkeys for an anthropology paper. They had me mesmerized and I had to force myself to leave to go to the show. On the way to the expressway, I kept hearing a ton of sirens. Figured something big happened. At an I-74 reststop, I heard the BASF plant in Cincy (about a mile and half from the zoo) had blown up. Guess that counts as something big. I remember being nice and relaxed at the show. Towards the end, the magic happened. They did Not Fade Away and walked of the stage. The crowd kept singing the chorus. Usually, these types of things become chaotic and die out. Not this time. The crowd got louder and louder and louder until the band came back for US Blues. Whenever I try to explain a Dead show to someone that's never been, I go back to the increasing strength and volume of the crowd singing "You know my love will not fade away". The next year at Deer Creek, my mind thankfully went right back to that.

2nd set was amazing! We sat w/ Jerry after the show in the bar @ Hilton. Everyone in the band was in the bar(except Brent) Talked w/ Jerry about art,music,theatre,etc...he was so present & cool. One of my favorite band expieriences.
