"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

While it's true that pretty much the top historically and popularly coveted shows are now released (5/8/77, 8/27/72, E'72, FW'69, 3/39/90, 2/13/70, 10/9/89, 10/16/89, 10/26/89, 9/10/91 just to name a few) have been released, there's so much more that are just as enjoyable to listen to. I think we need a good Greek Theater, Giants Stadium or Autzen Stadium release next. Did they have video screens at the '90 Autzen Stadium shows? DVDs would be really sweet. That magical Spring '90 tour mojo was still going strong on that West Coast late spring/early summer run.

Last night the Pups made their annual stop at one of the smallest clubs in Boston, The Brighton Music Hall. I had the pleasure of hanging with Curt, Chris and Elmo for about 30 minutes in the smoking area behind the venue. They seemed to like what I was smoking and were chatty as I kept lighting new ones.I got to ask them about a lot of stuff and requested Franklin's Tower, but Curt said he was the only one that would remember it. He did say that he still goes on GD binges for days at a time and his favorite stuff is the Pigpen years. They never played or even teased Franklin's but did a fine Whiskey in the Jar. Country Punk at it's finest. Here's one from the night before, the 11th, in Portland Me, though Ted the taper got the date wrong on the posting ;) https://archive.org/details/meatpuppets2017-05-12.ck61.nbox.sbd.flac/me…

I am really glad I bought this box, and luckily with no problems. The Buffalo show, while I can't say it's my favorite, is a real stand-out. A show that opens with Help Slipknot! Franklin's is just a sign of what's to come next. From that and a great Big River and Brown Eyed, throw in a Mississippi Half-Step -- travel on to a mind-melding Estimated Other One with perhaps the sweetest Comes a Time I've ever heard. And everything in between; but those are the highlights. My favorite version of Peggy-O is the New Haven one...I think that would be my go-to track to turn someone on to the Dead for the first time. It's so richly beautiful with crunchy and creamy layers of Deadness baked right inside. In the midst of finding the time to really listen to these four shows, I was directed by friend living on the Left Coast to 11/8/70 -- Lovely early acoustic versions of Dire Wolf, I know Your Rider (slow and melodic a real treat), and the last Operator. Event continues with NRPS on the stage, and then a Dead electric set. I'm glad for being able to continue to poke around some to find these amazing gems in the Dead archives. But nothing beats the sound of these newly mixed releases from the vault. I'll have my cake and eat it too!

"that's a great idea, but why don't we saw off both arms instead of just the one?" I got a chuckle out of that one. Not a LMAO or LOL; more of "heh, that Minas is funny". I'm enjoying some GSTL, although I had a handful of scratched/scuffed discs. Not all skipped, but several did. Replacements pending. Very nice combo of songs - most of the good ones are here. Too bad they didn't join Estimated Eyes for another week. I don't hear anything that sets these shows apart from the other May shows. I do get a little distracted by the echoey reverbish vocals; they sound most prominent on the Truckin' Up to Buffalo show. I was a tad bit hoping Jerry's guitar and vocals would be louder on Help / Slip / Franklin, but its still great. This triad is so rarely played that I dare not rank or compare it with others. Cornell, I think the Scarlet is solid, but I've heard better (5/21 & 5/13 come to mind). The transition into FOTM is special, like a magician sneaking your wallet out of your pocket (whoa the song changed, how did that happen??) The FOTM is incredible, top 5 for sure. Great guitar parts from Jerry, and perfectly mixed chorus vocals. Comes a Time is special, as is Mississippi Half-Step. Glad to see there's a Wheel in here. Buffalo Bertha is exceptional to me. There's a subtly slower but measured pace to it that grooves very nicely. Not crazy about Keith's organ sound on Estimated Prophet. He's using a Moog of some sort, and he's mixed really high up until around St Paul / Chicago. By late '77 / early '78, he's developed the sound a bit more, which is preferable to me. His sound is divine on Dick's Picks 18 (check out Estimated and The Wheel; you'll never hear a better Wheel!) That's about it for now.

I got together upon John's recommendation with Fent and Voigt and, with the help of Owsley, we learned 50 or so songs in one day and went out that night and got our choice of about three gigs in Hollywood. We played at the Sea Witch on Sunset Blvd. as the Crossing Guards. We were a power trio, and then John and Barbara joined back up with us and we changed our name to the PBC. The PBC was a name that Voigt came up with-- actually it was the Peanut Butter Controversy originally, but we changed it to Conspiracy right away. - Alan Brackett http://peanutbutterconspiracy.com

....to be able to listen to each show on their 40th anniversary date would definitely be preferable. DaP 20 and July '78 both arrived on the exact date. DaP 21 (swoon) arrived two days early. Neither was ordered expedited shipping, so I have hope. With the fiasco last Thursday, I would think dead.net/Rhino/Warner music would sheepishly admit a screw up occurred and would push these to the post office a few days early. If nothing else but to ease the stress. And yes, I was stressing out for six hours on the 16th....and if not, I'm sure Jim's mower can go back two days with only a mild salsa in the tank....fact. The population of my zip code is approx 35k. To think that they only made 15k of this box for the entire WORLD boggles my mind. If my zip code was the only group marketed to, only half of the households within a three mile radius of me would have one.....half.

Dark Star Today [the talk show] Today's Installment: January 17th, 1970 https://archive.org/details/gd70-01-17.sbd.cotsman.19283.sbeok.shnf/gd7… Again, found this gem during my deep dive into 1970 over the past weekend. It's only the second Dark Star of 1970, and it had been a few weeks since they played it last (the magnificent 1/2). It rolls along very nicely after hitting The Outer Limits following the first verse. Phil kinda of teases a Feeling Grooving in there, but it never fully develops. Then off into a solid and raunchy St. Stephen> Eleven> Lovelight...which is cut, unfortunately. Happy Trails Sixtus

Sugaree my fav. Samson & Delilah my fav. (Great God Almighty Talk! Woooo!) Terrapin Station top 3. The rest feels like not the best Spring 77. I am thinking there were better shows than this for a national / widely distributed release. Am I missing something? Doesn't have an Estimated / Eyes, Help / Slip / Franklin, or Scarlet / Fire, or Music Never Stopped, or Mississippi Half-Step. What am I missing in this release?

Sorry this took so long but last night was pretty hectic in the situation room. We kept getting reports that Anna Chapman (the hot Russian spy) was driving a John Deere down the D.C. Beltway. We thought that these were prank calls but then saw Jim's post that his Deere had been stolen. We dispatched a team to the Beltway but only found a trail of drops of a reddish-brown liquid that appears to be a mixture of lawn mower engine oil and Sriracha. We've sent samples to the lab and are awaiting the results.Another interesting thing was that there was a copy of a Charlie Miller 5-8-77 on the side of the road....

I agree; that was a puzzling choice for a featured stand alone release. I posted this last night on the Yang side (the AME gripe fest) but I think perhaps it is germane to this discussion as well: "I guess it doesn't really matter anyway; all the hubbub ... .... and 5-19-77 is still the best show from the tour! I'm certain of it, I just got done checking again." *according to the shopping cart test, they have 2.130 copies of this left in stock. It was released on 09 under Rhino's tenure. I wonder how many they printed. I bet it wasnt much more that 15,000 copies.

As to the reasoning for the release, I have no clue. I do enjoy it, but don't often listen to it. I think the Sugaree is epic, and possibly the GOAT, the closing Playing sequence is quite good, though I'm not sure it compares to the similar jam sequence that ends 5/17/77 from the first May 77 box. I looked this release up and checked the amazon result, and it had a blurb that said this was released because The Dead tour Spring 09 was hitting Hartford as well. My question to that would be, why not put out a small set of 3/31-4/1/91 Greensboro for the opening night of that same tour? A good release, historical in that it's the last of the fabled month of May, but for 20 bucks, it's a great deal.

I went back and listened to the whole Pirate's World tape at work today, and while not giving it my complete and undivided attention (as I need to ensure I am able to keep money in my account weekly so my box doesn't get canceled), I enjoyed it again, and the rest of the show was a firecracker, then the end of the show, it sounds like they're setting off firecrackers very close to the stage. A really good show. I followed that with 2/24/71 at the Capitol Theatre. I really hope they do a Capitol box with those reels back home. With no Dark Star or Other One, this was a very good show with less jamming, though Truckin gets an early workout, and Bird Song was sweet. Lovelight was down and dirty, and not too long.

The riding mower is back. I found fragments of a napkin from someplace called Mandalay B (its torn from there), a parking ticket from the DC Metro, an old coin.. possibly a ruble and a severed pinky toe with metallic green nail polish. Oh, in the drink holder I found the small end of a ticket stub, looks like it was from 03/24/1970 and a small roach. I decided to smoke the roach, in case the cops read these threads.. I don't want any evidence hanging around that could jeopardize my eminent run for Senate. Very strange.. Edit: On a separate note, the Senator appears to be missing.

In order from innermost to outermost, they are now officially Mickey, Billy, TC, Jerry, Phil, Bobby and Pigpen. The most impressive factor of this system, is that for 80 minutes of the "day", no matter what planet you decide to set foot on, you can see the other six in the sky at the same time. 80 minutes....hmmm. That's the length of a compact disc. Coincidence?.....and, of course, they all orbit a dwarf, somewhat, dark star....

I listened again to the Rolling Stones UK Between The Buttons album after reading a 1967 Jerry Garcia interview in which he praised the album. I remember the first time I listened to it I was on acid and really got off on how the song Something Happened To Me Yesterday was an apt description of discovering the LSD experience. Something happened to me yesterday Something I can't speak of right away Something happened to me Something oh so groovy Something happened to me yesterday He don't know if it's right or wrong Maybe he should tell someone He's not sure just what it was Or if it's against the law Something Something very strange I hear you say You're talking in a most peculiar way But something really threw me Something oh so groovy Something happened to me yesterday (Yesterday) He don't know just where it's gone He don't really care at all No one's sure just what it was Or the meaning and the cause Something (What kinda joint is this) (Take your partners) Me don't know if it's right or wrong Maybe he should tell someone He's not sure just what it was Or if it's against the law Something Someone says there's something more to pay For sins that you committed yesterday It's really rather drippy But something oh so trippy Something happened to me yesterday He don't know just where it's gone He don't really care at all No one's sure just what it was Or the meaning and the cause Something Someone's singing loud across the bay Sittin on a mat about to pray Isn't half as looney As something oh so groovy Something happened to me yesterday He don't know if it's right or wrong Maybe he should tell someone He's not sure just what it was Or if it's against the law Something [spoken] Well thank you very much and now I think it's time for us All to go. so from all of us to all of you not forgetting The boys in the band and our producer, Reg Thorpe, We'd like to say "God Bless". It's an audience recording, as I understand no SBD exists due to Bear being in the clink. Even so, this is a very good capture of the sound in that hall. Furthermore, one must actually SEE this sequence to understand what will be found when listening: Dark Star> Attics of My Life> Dark Star > Tighten Up Jam> Feeling Groovy jam > Sugar Magnolia> Dark Star> St. Stephen> Chinacat Sunflower> I Know You Rider And that's just one sequence (and this link is just for the late set - the entire show can be found via other links, inclusive of the New Riders set). The Not Fade Away is raunchy and energetic and melds like buttah beautifully right into an even raunchier Easy Wind. And who doesn't like a raucous Easy Wind??? Another notable mention is the Sugar Magnolia that appears in the middle of the sequence above; this is a super-proto version and you can tell. it's quite brief and I actually had to go back and listen to it again just to understand what was going on. It's a fun moment amidst a mind-blower Have at it! Sixtus P.S. glad to hear The Mower has been returned safely. It seems it's had some galactic and cosmic journeys just in the last 12 hours. Good call on finishing that roach too; I assume it was laced with stardust at that point.

sorry still simmering over the potential of Feds going after established businesses that were voted legal by certain states, all of which do not appear to have voted for the winner. Back to the music to sooth my soul...

...but the Dark Star from 2/24/74 is a treat.. and its 43 years old today. ..and boblopes, enjoy your time basking in the sun. I drifted away from most pro sports when the owners starting taking cities and municipalities hostage to pay for their stadiums.. but I passively notice what's going on. What I noticed this year is that the Patriots have garnered a disproportionate amount of bad will when you venture outside New England. Anyway.. it does feel good when the home team wins, no harm in enjoying it. My dad used to take us to Baltimore Colts games when I was a kid.. The Steelers were it back then much like New England is today. ah..the 70's. :D Have a good weekend all.. Now.. what to play today? I think in honor of the first day of summer here.. a killer Weather Report Suite > mayhem might work nicely.

Looking to get a new CD player and from what I have seen and read for my price range, around 150ish, Onkyo provides good quality product. I have also seen that name pop up frequently on these boards. The thing is whenever I look into reviews I see everything from 5 star, wow love it, to 1 star, broke within a month. Was wondering if anyone could share opinions on these products, specifically the Onkyo DXC390 6 Disc CD Changer and the Onkyo C-7030 Compact Disc Player. While I would obviously prefer a 6 CD player to a 1 CD player, it is also cheaper. The 1 CD player was ranked a little higher. Any insight or opinions would be very helpful. Thank you.

In my experience, single disc players have been better than changers, simply due to mechanics and the cheap plastic parts used in low end players. Both will likely sound the same but the single disc unit may likely be more reliable in the long run.

To Terrapin pleases me more than I expect it to just about every time I play it. As far as the WH comments re: recreational weed,I am curious how that will turn out. The medical mj industry in MT was effectively dismantled by the fed's during Obama's term, after the Ogden memo, but we are a low population state. I don't think that the fed's really have the resources to maintain prohibition without the states doing most of the enforcement at the state level based on state prohibition laws. Check out the book "Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition" by Daniel Okrent which provides a great description of how this played out at the end of alcohol prohibition.

I bought an Onkyo 6-disc changer in '97, played the crap out of it and it still works today. It's currently in my office, and I have a newer model in my living room that works great too. There's something to be said about loading all the discs of a show, hitting play, and kicking back while the whole show plays.

Spun it last night. It's a good recording of a well played show. It may not blow your socks off, but after a whole month of smoking shows, you got to figure that the band may have been a little worn out. I have no complaints that it was released unlimited, it's a great show for the casual fan who probably would not buy all the limited box sets.

Thanks for the insight, I like the idea of being able to play a full show without having to run to the player every 40-70 minutes. Also the fact that you have a newer model that works well is great, I know some companies have a history of great products and out of nowhere they succumb to lowering their own standards.

Mine has a minor quirk that sometimes when I press the open drawer/carousel button the drawer opens but then closes immediately. Sometimes when it is open and I press the close button it won't close (this can be resolved by gently tapping the open drawer and then it will close because it has a safety feature to automatically close if bumped).Don't know if I'm accidentally hitting the button twice or if the player is just quirky. Anyway, it plays CDs great. I recently got an Onkyo Bluray player and it was amazing how much better the audio on the FTW blurays sounded compared to the junky Samsung Bluray player I had. You get what you pay for.

I went against the good doctors orders today... I know totally wrong. But I skipped the Darkstar on DiP 22 and went straight for The Eleven. I know, "consult a physician." Anyhow, this Eleven, outside of the Other One, was totally what the doctor ordered. Jerry teases some awesome Jimi at the end. Is it just me? Check it out.

In my early years.. I often skipped the Dark Stars. Its not that I didn't like them, it was more a function of casual listening vs. deep, dark matter. Now, sometimes I rewind or start over if I get distracted...

I absolutely love The Eleven. Its probably the song that made me a Phil believer. To this day, if its general admission.. you will find me Phil side, even if Phil isn't playing. Its a habit. Speaking of Spicy Sauce.. the 1973 Jerry Garcia Band Betty Boards were rescued using one of our exiled North Korean operatives. Apparently he was compromised.. and it looks like he got a dose of tainted Kung Pao. A weird, wild story that will likely have repercussions in the geopolitical heat wave that is about to ensue. The Eleven.. its hard to pick a favorite.. it all just flows. Right now I am really like the one on Two From the Vault. Classic.

Apologies if this is old news - j of the week is from 5-14-70 Merramec College, Kirkwood, MO. Next night, very next night, was Fillmore E (R Trips 3.3). This slice of 5/14 is straight up 70 craziness. Amazing and excellent!! Do not miss it!!

Part of that 5/14 show appears on the Bonus Disc for Road Trips 3.3. By the time the Road Trip series honed in on the honey pot material.. the series was already doomed. But 3.3 is a gem beyond belief.. a truly great release and is the first show where I realized the brilliance of Jeffrey Norman. Edit: I wonder.. knowing what we know now.. if Road Trips was a vailed attempt to make the vault last and spread out the goodies that were in the vault over the years. Thank goodness for Zuck and his band of reel returning misfits.. Looks like David and I crossed paths at about the same time. When 1970 cooked.. its hard to find any better GD.
