And what a stunner it was, that show at the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, ID on September 2, 1983. Dave's Picks Volume 27 contains every stitch of music from this mid-80s show (our first in this series), one that's as good as any other in Grateful Dead history. When the Dead were on, they were ON! Straight out the gate with a definitive take on the old standard "Wang Dang Doodle," the band swiftly switches back to a setlist of yore, firing off 70s staples like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" and wrapping things up with a terrific trio of "Big Railroad Blues"/"Looks Like Rain"/"Deal" (don't you let that epic guitar solo go down without you). Primed for the second set, they tackle the complexities of "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's" with heart and ease. It's clear there will be no stopping their flow - Bobby and Brent hanging in for a fantastic pre-Drums "Jam" and Jerry and Bobby in the zone on a not-to-be-missed melodic "Space." Not a skipper in the whole lot!

Ain't Bettyboard quality sound, but there was more to the 30 Trips than the Betty period.Jerry ain't his 60s/70s self, but I prefer Brown-Eyed Women at this tempo rather than that slow 70s style. That was the first BEW I have put in my iTunes in many years! Micky hobbles Billy pretty much, but brings his special percussion sauce to some vital moments. If this was my first year of Dave's Picks and I couldn't afford to spend crazy money on the mostly "out of print" GD back-catalog, then this release would be an unhappy event for me. As someone who has pretty much every GDM release since the mid-90s, this DaP is what I want now. I have more great '70s GDM shows than I can actually listen to. I have nearly enough 60s GDM shows... But I don't have enough 80s/90s. (My CharlieMillers/etc cover all the gaps, but there are important things about the released-by-GDM status...) There certainly should continue to be Bettyboard releases for the soundquality-heads and peak period releases for the peakonly-heads, but there is room in the release schedule for telling "the rest of the story" for the GOGD-heads. Thanks again Dave for this DaP. Sorry it bothers some people, but I hope they can tolerate more 80s/90s releases down the road. They should remember when enjoying another 73/74/77 DaP, that Seth Hollander and others are "tolerating" it (except the included "The Other One"/"Dark Star"/"Slipknot!"/"ScarletFire" - I'm LOVING that part).

Got this Monday and put it on late that night. I liked the first disc enough to stay up way too late listening to the entire show. By the time Baby Blue came on I had a huge smile on my face.My sweet spot is the Godchaux era and that's mostly what I listen to but I enjoyed this show very much. The sound quality seems to vary throughout and it's not among my favorite releases but this is what the Grateful Dead was in 1983 and it's a fun listen. At this point I feel like not every release has to be a grand slam. I have so many big time shows in my collection that I welcome an occasional release like this. Kudos to whomever made the joke about Jerry's voice in Black Peter. MHammond maybe? That's some funny shit. Having said that, i really had a good time listening to disc 3. Now...how about Feline Field '73 to close out the year?

I for one welcome this pick. It’s a unique and different show and it fills in another gap in my collection. I enjoy all these 80’s releases and would even love something from the 90’s. Maybe 93 that would be sweet. But come on Dave we seriously need some 1979. I don’t care what show. Just something from 79.

I'm shocked at all of the negative feedback on this release. I'm an all eras lover and really just can't understand how a deadhead could listen to this show and say it sucks. I know everything is subjective but some of these comments are blowing my mind. For my money this is one of the best pre 89 80's release we've been treated to, with the obvious exception 10/12/84 and 11/30/80. I'll be playing this one for years to come.

Locked and loaded for the car ride to work. Nothing like unwrapping a new Dave's Pick. One song in and I love this Wang Dang Doodle. Embarrassed to admit it, but it's the first time I've heard it. I only have 80 minutes and I'm dying to hear disc 2..... what to do what to do.

Gave it another listen and I'm still really enjoying it, warts and all. Highlights for me: Wang Dang Doodle TLEO Big Railroad blues Deal Slipknot>Franklins (I'll admit Help is a mess) Eyes>Jam>Drums GDTRFB It's all over now baby blue I'd like to think I'm fairly picky and not overly enthusiastic about every release. there are certainly some releases I really can't listen to more than a couple times (Alpine Dicks Picks, Boulder Dave's Picks come to mind), but this is a real fun release to have for the summer. I'm happy I have it now because once September rolls around and we get that crazy boxset and go to 73-74 heaven, my guess is I won't listen to this again for a very long time. Enjoying it while I'm still in the mood...

So my car currently contains both Dap27 and 10/19/73. Been enjoying DaP27 - my first show was in this era so it's an era rooted in my DNA. I love Oct '83, and this one has some great moments despite many of the issues described already. Sound is good (for an '83...) - enjoying it thoroughly. Then I distractedly popped in 10/19/73 (probably my favorite show ever) just because it was the only other CD in my car. Ya know when people jump near-naked into a snowbank, then jump back into the hot tub? This was like jumping back into the hot tub, and the Swedish Bikini Team hands me a margarita. The contrast from DaP27 was night and day - I literally sat for a moment transfixed, drinking it in: the balanced mix, smooth pace, clear heartfelt vocals, the warm tone of Jerry's guitar, the round piano sound, and the bell-like ring of Billy's well-mic'd ride cymbal as if you can reach out and touch it. Holy crap that's an amazing recording - this is why they thankfully lean to the '70's releases: some of the recordings are absolutely stunning!!!! I know of no other band who has such crystalline sounding archive recordings (I'll let you know as I dig into Nickelback's vault - they've sold 50 mil albums so I'm sure there's some great stuff in there....). So thanks Dave & Co. for continuing to share all these recordings with us.

Had to break out DP 6 after being blown away by the new Dave's Pick. These shows are pretty different from each other so its kind of hard to compare, but they're both from 1983 so I'll give it a shot. 10/14/83 feels a lot more mellow to me and the beauty really shines in the mellow songs, coincidentally. Althea is a great example of that. Smoothly and slowly chugs along in a magical hypnotic way. Jerry's voice isn't 100% on 9/2 for sure, but I think its better than 10/14 and even works more for him on Black Peter. Compare it to Tennessee Jed from 10/14 where Jerry is really struggling to hit the high notes. 10/14 has the "great" and rare "Keep Your Day Job" ...which might only be interesting because it wasn't played much and was supposedly dropped from the rotation after public demand, but I still enjoy it a little bit. I'd probably enjoy it a little bit more if Jerry could get all the words right. And also, I don't believe there are any stellar recordings of this song? Its interesting to me that the highlights for both shows (IMO) are the set II openers. For Scarlet>Fire, again Jerry's voice is a tad on the rough side but the playing is phenomenal. The mellow intensity is quite different from the "controlled chaos" of the Slipknot from 9/2 but both display some very fine jamming and display the diversity of the greatest band of all time. Both shows have really good Estimated > Eyes but 9/2 has that incredible Bobby/Brent/Rhythm Devils jam out of Eyes that makes the show that much more unique. Both of these shows have great "Space's" 9/2 with the harmonious & melodic interplay and 10/14 with the very green "spinach" jam that goes just exactly perfect into "The Other One." (Side note: Another show with a really good Drums/Space is 3/16/90 -- which also goes "Drums>Space>TOO>Stella Blue>Sugar Magnolia" -- like 10/14/83 ...maybe this was done a lot? I don't know) Overall, I'd have to say I prefer 9/2/83. I would normally go for a show like 10/14/83 because I usually prefer the mellow spaciness of a Dead show but on 9/2 they brought the fire. They also played the slow ones very nicely; Looks Like Rain & Black Peter. All that mixed with the odd intensity of Slipknot and the very different jam out of eyes and the lovely space, makes for a really spectacular and dynamic show. I don't know...maybe I just like it more because I'm not as familiar with it yet, but I can't get enough. Very grateful for these releases. Keep em' coming!

Disc two does it for me. I’ve listened about three times through and despite the couple of vocal flubs and missed queues, the fast paced intensity bordering on chaos (that Slipknot!) is both different to my ears as well as inspiring. Not having more than the previously officially released offerings from ‘83, this is a welcome addition. Admittedly the oscillating consternation from some was expected as we all know that ‘eras’ can cause a rukus now and then. Hope All are well and happy. Sixtus

Guess I need to do some loyalty reassessment myself, because there are easily half-a-dozen versions of "Deal" that outrank this one for me. 11/17/73 immediately springs to mind. Or 12/31/76. Or 4/22/78. Or 6/9/77. Or 7/4/89. Though I first started seeing shows in '83, these pre-coma 80's gigs are a rough ride for my ears when I play them back. The boys just sound like a bad cover band of their own band. I'm not saying there aren't some solid moments in the early/mid-80s. There are. Here and there. Sometimes. We all tend to cut the band some slack because we love them, but I have to agree with Trainwrecked. No way they would have gained any traction outside of San Francisco sounding like this. Glad the show is getting some love though. And nice to see SpaceBro happy. Hope he holds onto that glow for awhile.

Trainwrecked, that was hilarious. And spot on. I hear both sides of this argument. This show is sub-standard for a Dave's Pick, but I personally have so many shows now that this fills a gap and it hipped me to the Pre-Fall '83 mini tour. I bought a buddy of mine a subscription to Dave's this year. He listened to a lot of Dead back in the day and is getting back into them more and more. I don't know what his reaction to this show will be, but I wont be surprised if he doesn't like it and doesn't want to throw down his $100 next year if he's going to get more of this type of show. If you were introducing someone to the band you would never play them this show. As a fan of all configurations and eras if the band I can personally dig it. But to say though that the playing is really good is baffling to me. Jerry is in really rough shape here. The vocals that aren't missed are not delivered well by Jerry, and most harmony vocals are missed, primarily by Bobby. Phil is here and gone in the mix. The drums are low and muffled and one could be forgiven for thinking the band is backed by a single three armed drummer who's playing from a closet onstage. For whoever said the Black Peter is great, maybe Spacebrother - probably Spacebrother, two better Black Peter's have been released in the last year in this series. Berkeley and Hill Auditorium. Seriously. Its not even close. This one will spin more than the Colorado '80 show, maybe more than a few of the '77 releases, but not in the top 20 Dave's. Thank goodness the West Coast box in on deck.

Is there anyone who has never seen the Dead in the 80s or 90s who loves this show? I think seeing the 80s lineup makes this tape more accessible. Grateful Dead Europe '72 and One From the Vault is a pristine representation of the band, so I think it's an easier listen to than something like Boise. But like one poster said, the people at the show that night had a much different experience. Trainwreck, I disagree with your evaluation to some extent, but I enjoyed the humor you injected. I can tell you love the Dead, but at the same time gave an honest write up. It felt more like a real time play by play. Cover up it's coming. I noticed that you compared it two July 7th 1989. You know that show was a multitrack recording right?

I like your dead head x ray, I think we all look like that on the inside. Trainwrecked, I nearly peed my pants it was so funny a review. Cover yourself! I listened to mine a third time today, this time on the treadmill with ear buds. The head phones do not bring it all together properly. It was such a big difference compared to my CD player and big speakers, which improve the sound greatly. On the earbuds it sounded noisy and every 60 seconds or so I would hear this noise from the bass drum I guess, that sounded like someone opening the door. I kept turning around to check which let me just tell you is a hazard on a treadmill!

One way of looking at this show that works for me is this- I don't think this show is bad, I just don't think it's good. My 1st show was six weeks later on 10-14-83 and I revisited it in prep for this release and for me there is no comparison. 10-14 leaves this show in the dust. If you think this Big RR is good, check out the one from 10-14.I'm sure I would have had a blast if I attended the Boise show, but for me it just doesn't work as a release. It's balls to the walls cocaine dead which worked sometimes, but in this show there is no sum of the parts, the boys aren't listening to each other or playing off of each other at all and to me that's what makes this band so special. I was psyched for this release, but this band made too much incredible music to waste my time ever listening to this again. I guess I'm just not a true deadhead. Absolutely can't wait for PNW box!!!!

Your problem is you saw the best show of the 80's as your 1st. That is of course a subjective statement but I've talked about it here several times over the years.A number of people here agree that it was superior. I saw at least 150 shows in that decade and the knock on the 80's is frequently true but not that night it was indeed special. You got spoiled lol

Honestly I'm just happy everybody is being respectful on both sides of the aisle. Lots of humor this time around. We all get it. Some of us like some of it. Some of us like all of it. The important thing is that we can sit here and offer reviews without getting nasty with each other. Happy birthday Jerry. It's like he's watching over us and instilling a good vibe and saying, 'come on guys do you have any idea how much snow was around in the 80s??? I'd like to see you guys do your jobs whacked out on coke. We never sounded better to us!' What do I think? No way I'm getting in the middle of this one! I don't want to be targeted for assassination. Oh yeah Train Wrecked, cover your nuts buddy, here it comes!

The best show I saw I the 80s was Alpine 7-17-89., which might be the best show I ever saw, except when I think of 3-24-90.....however I would trade all the shows I saw to see one from each of the years from 67 to 74. It took Buffalo 77 and a whole bunch of Pigpen to clean my palate after listening to the Boise show.

Thanks for leaving us with such a rich and wonderful musical legacy. Garcia - IMO, THE pre-eminent musician of the 20th century, hands down. Another by-product of the Dead's popularity and legacy that I love is when I "google" a date and the first entry that pops up is a Grateful Dead show for that date. Happens way more often than one would expect. How cool is that?!

Don't worry the 15th was damn good also. As for this show and the complainers whatever. True it isn't multitrack but it's as good or better as some of the best tapes we had in the 80's when quality tapes really started happening. I was lucky and had access to 1st gen top quality of a lot of shows at that time. To those who weren't around then we really liked listening to them. As a matter of fact I still listen to some of the top shows. To Dave, Pinkus, Rhino, WB etc thanks again for a great job and allowing me and others to enjoy these shows in the best quality possible. And the occasional 80's show will be welcome

I'm with you man. I like this one a lot, def more than the 81 show from Boulder. Great 1st set, Big River absolutely smokes. They hit this aggressively fast, tight groove that doesn't let up until Looks Like Rain. LLR is solid, and a peppy Deal kicker. H/S/F def sounds like they ripped some lines at the break. They hold it all together, impressively so. I think it was Mario Andretti who said "If you don't feel a little out of control you're not going fast enough." Listening to Eyes as I type. Love this jam more and more and more. Still crazy fast but still tight. I agree the sound is a little 'off', if I consciously focus on it. But its still a professionally produced commercial CD of the Grateful Dead. It doesn't sound 'bad' by any normal meaning of that word. I'm all for more 80s if they're up to this quality.

Last paragraph: "At the end of Eyes, Bobby and Brent stayed on for a spirited boogie with the drummers. During the drums I danced right up in front of the stage. In an unusual acrobatic feat, Mickey hit a beat, leapt into the air and spun around, landing in time to come in on the very next beat. One of the biggest highlights for me was the jam that Bobby and Jerry played after Drums; it was a beautiful duet and sounded much different than what was usual at the time. It even brought Phil out from the wings (sans guitar but with a Heineken in hand) just to watch. That show was a very special treat for everyone who made it there. Too bad they never invited us back." PS: In the archive, this show gets consistent four/five star ratings. In DeadBase it's listed 19th for 1983 "Favorite Tapes." That's not, btw, "Best Shows." Incidentally, 10/14/83 is ranked 23rd for 1983 and I definitely think 10/14 is the better show. Or maybe it's the more familiar show? Idk, need to give 9/2 another whirl. At any rate, I'm happy with this pick. Compare Dave's 22 with 26: VERY similar shows. These are on 22 and not on 26: Cold Rain and Snow, Brokedown Palace, Smokestack Lightning, China-Rider (bonus disc). All else are repeats. From a quick glance, everything on 26 is on 22. Much needed mid-80s variety with this selection. I still think a solid 84 needs release. That said, someone posted the Black Peter from DeKalb 10/29/77. There's apparently a Betty Board sitting in the vault...just waiting for release. That release will be awesome. Can't imagine much complaints from that one. But who knows!

As Pete Townshend put it in Naked Eye:You can cover up your guts But when you cover up your nuts You're admittin' that there must be something wrong And to Vguy, a couple pages back, I saw you mention watching Isle of Dogs with the family. Fantastic movie, watched it twice in the last week. The second time, I had watched all the featurettes and was more blown away by what it took to make. One of the artists put 297 freckles on 22 different heads for Tracy, and they put each stitch of hair in by hand. Great movie and a nice homage to Kurosawa.

That was some crazy shit out of Eyes. For a second I thought I was the one who ripped a couple lines during the break. I think it'd be cool still to have a stash of the old tapes. I never had any, but I'd keep some if I did. Maybe particularly famous ones, ones that got released later.
