Look for the the 7 Walkers, featuring Bill Kreutzmann, guitarist Papa Mali, multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard (Willie Nelson, Fastball), and legendary New Orleans bass man George Porter Jr. (The Meters, Funky Meters) in a city near you this Fall. Starting with three shows in New York, including a two-night stand at City Winery on September 2 & 3, the band will make its way to Colorado before swinging back through the South and wrapping up the tour at Durham, NC's Carolina Theatre on October 23. With George Porter Jr.
One of the truly pleasant surprises of 2010 has been the emergence of 7 Walkers, the eclectic quartet that features guitarist/singer/songwriter Papa Mali (a.k.a. Malcolm Welbourne), good ol’ Bill Kreutzmann on drums, Matt Hubbard on keys, harmonica and trombone, and N’awlins funk ’n’ rock legend George Porter Jr. on bass. The group has been getting people boppin’ and groovin’ at clubs and on the jam band festival circuit for much of the year, and now everyone can enjoy their fine, self-titled first album, which came out in early November on Response Records.

"No lie, “Evangeline” may be my favorite post Garcia-Hunter song to date."

I showed up at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco on April 9 to see Bill Kreutzmann’s new band—7 Walkers—with limited expectations. I had heard a snippet of one song on David Gans’ radio show, I believe, but somehow singer/guitarist Papa Mali (real name: Malcolm Welbourne) had eluded me though the years, and I didn’t really know much about him other than that he was from Louisiana originally. Photos depicted a large white guy with long dreadlocks and big sunglasses; sort of a cross between George Clinton and Dr. John! Throw in George Porter Jr.
