    The song…
WAKE OF THE FLOOD The song that gave Wake of the Flood its name has its roots in the great Vanport flood of 1948, an event witnessed by 6-year old Robert Burns, later known as Robert Hunter. It was an event so newsworthy that it prompted Woody Guthrie to write a ballad about it (from his home in Brooklyn), recently revived by Ben Hunter and Joe Seamon. There is much scholarship around the Vanport flood, including several documentaries, though Robert Hunter’s take is entirely personal. Thank you immensely to the Retro Photo Archive for sharing the wonderful interviews Jon Sievert conducted with Jerry Garcia and Doug Irwin in 1977 and 1978, and to David Gans for providing the interview with the late Dick Latvala. Our guests Bruce Hornsby, Scott Metzger, and Alex Bleeker probably all have shows soon. Taper’s Choice recently released The History of Taper’s Choice Vol. 1 (Taper’s Choice), with a title reference that many Dead freaks might recognize. Elvis Costello visited with us during our Europe ‘72 season, talking about his epic teenage experience seeing the Dead in the mud on our Bickershaw festival episode. Robert Hunter posted the original draft of the “Stella Blue” lyrics to his website. You can play with the isolated tracks from “Stella Blue” with the Playing In The Band applet. Grateful Dead Hour #265 featured a live performance of “Playing in the Band” by Bobby Hi-Test and the Octane Kids, featuring Bruce Hornsby, which you can listen to here. Guitarist Scott Metzger (of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, LaMP, Wolf!, and more) is probably gigging near you soon. The core of our “Row Jimmy” episode comes from a pair of 1977 and 1978 conversations with lyricist Robert Hunter, courtesy interviewer David Gans. Parts of both are collected in the essential volume Conversations With the Dead, available with his other books from David’s web store. Guitarist Scott Metzger is playing music tonight somewhere, probably, on tour with LaMP this fall. Thanks, as always, to Alex Allan’s Whitegum for lyric pointers, both notes on “Row Jimmy,” and the connection to the earlier lyric “Fair To Even Odds.” This week’s episode also includes a chronological supercut of “Row Jimmy,” containing a few seconds from performances that range from Jerry Garcia’s earliest demo in January 1973 to the Grateful Dead’s final performance of the song in May 1995. demo version, Sans Souci home studio, Stinson Beach, CA February 9, 1973 Maples Pavilion, Palo Alto, CAJune 10, 1973 RFK Stadium, Washington, DC August 7, 1973 Record Plant, Sausalito, CA June 28, 1974 Boston Garden, Boston, MA June 10, 1976 Boston Music Hall, Boston, MAJune 8, 1977 Winterland, San Francisco, CA January 22, 1978 McArthur Court, Eugene, OR December 28, 1979 Oakland Auditorium Arena, Oakland, CAMay 16, 1980 Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY May 11, 1981 New Haven Coliseum, New Haven, CT September 20, 1982 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY October 20, 1983 Worcester Centrum, Worcester, MA April 17, 1984 Niagara Falls Convention Center, Niagara Falls, NY June 25, 1985 Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY December 16, 1986 Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CAMarch 26, 1987 Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, CT July 2, 1988 Oxford Plains Motor Speedway, Oxford, ME July 4, 1989 Rich Stadium, Buffalo, NY March 26, 1990 Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY June 14, 1991 RFK Stadium, Washington, DC December 16, 1992 Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA September 20, 1993 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY March 23, 1994 Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY May 28, 1995 Portland Meadows, Portland, OR Guitarist Scott Metzger is playing music tonight somewhere, probably, on tour with LaMP this fall. I have a one off, 2 colour vinyl pressing of this album and am looking into its value. It was pressed in the late 70’s in Malton Ontario Canada at Capitol records. The audio quality is not the greatest, but I cannot find anywhere that it was pressed in 2 colours.
Anyone with interest please reply and I'll send a photo.

Sorry, but how can I post a story, Thanks

Does anyone recall the evening in the early to mid 70’s that the Hells Angels took over Bojangles bar Bay Ridge NY and Jerry Garcia, Bob Wier and Phil Lesh strummed their guitars and singing in the backroom sitting on chairs with angels standing around. It was a birthday party for Jerry. All the alcohol was on the bar with tubs of beer set about. I was not an invite but walked in thru the bar grabbing a beer as I moved to the back room to listen, after a half hour of me enjoying this moment, an Angel tapped me on the shoulder politely asked if I would finish my beer and leave, it took me about 15-20 min. to finish and reluctantly leave. Bojangles also had outstanding burgers on english muffins.

    Hi everyone!

I placed a few orders for Box sets on the dead.net site, one of them is now one month overdue (No shipping info for an item marked available)
Tried emailing dead@wmgcustomerservice.com three times in the last 2+ weeks, without any answer.
Does anyone have an idea what to do?

Thank you for the warm welcome to the updated Dead.net! It's great to hear that familiar aspects of the site are still intact, albeit with some minor changes in location. For newcomers, the invitation to explore and make oneself at home is much appreciated.
The mentioned possibilities, such as tape trading (both digital and otherwise), In Search Of for tickets, merchandise, and music, the Ride Board as a useful touring resource, and All About My Band for discussing one's own musical projects, offer exciting avenues for engagement.
If any navigational assistance is required, reaching out through a post or a private message to "marye" is encouraged, as the team is ready to provide support.

I got into the dead in 94. I started traveling in 95, and made it to one show at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh that year. After that we all went on Further, and checked out rainbow gatherings, a lot of other bands shows, and country fairs. I'm looking for old friends from everywhere, but for sure spent some time in Boulder, CO, Santa Cruz and San Francisco, CA,Timonium, MD, the Ozarks of Missouri, Oregon various places, and on and on. My name was usually Tarah but sometimes Cordy. I usually traveled with a girl named Fraggle most of the time. Chris Swain, Voichez Auguswinski, Paul Rush, especially Paul Rush, I'm not remembering any other names right now, but if you think you know me ...and Jarod...email or PM me. Love you all!!!
BTW, I posted this here because I couldn't figure out how to post it in " I'm looking for" Any advice on how to do that would be greatly appreciated!!
Anyone who knew Greasy Shawn, hit me up, he was the love of my life!

But the new site is alright with me.

It seems like its easier to get to some of the "other" sections, but not as quick to get to the latest release thread. Which is okay, it might spread out the traffic a little. Those threads could get unwieldy very quickly.

Since the issue I described seems to be unlikely to be affecting you: If you can see and tap/click/press/whatever your avatar up there on the upper right, it will reveal a menu that includes Logout. Also the ever-popular Recent Posts. Let me know if this works okay for you. Thanks!

My problems

1) Last night my password wouldn't work. to log in I had to request I new one (account info was remembered by the system).
To comment today I again had to request a new password after my new password wasn't recognized.

2) Wanted to post about this from IceCreamKid:
"After posting that last comment I was sent to page 6 of this message board.
Why wasn’t I sent to the most recent post of this page?
And another...
Those navigation numbers on the bottom of the page
First......1,2,3......Last
Put a copy of those on the top of the page too so that you don’t have to scroll to the bottom of the page just to move to another page."

That experience happened to me too (at first, thought my comment had not posted, then saw the page number) and his request is one I firmly second. If you have comments appearing newest first, scrolling to the bottom the page to change pages is annoying and there should be the same page list/links available above the comments as there is below.

Hope that my password problem goes away. Hope the vast fields of white do get filled in with something interesting but not distracting or obfuscatory.

The site did seem to need an overhaul. Hopefully, this overhaul will be beneficial. Thanks for trying, GDM crew.
(And when I posted this to the DaP page, I was bounced to page 6 again...)

Thanks Mary for all of your patience, help and therapy!!! I know websites must stay current with trends and technology. I like the general direction the new site seems to be heading in, but will wait for pats-on-the-back at this point. Here are some things I've noticed.

[Viewing Via Chrome (Version 69.0.3497.100) on MacBook Pro/High Sierra v. 10.13.6]

GENERAL
1. Dim the background or add cool, subtle background so the new site does not continue causing headaches and/or blindness.
2. Seems like every time you do anything, you have to re-take the reCaptcha exam. Is this necessary?

MESSAGES
1. The personal message board takes a very long time to download compared to other locations on the new site..
2. There is no “PM member” button with poster’s avatar/comment, or on their member info page, or anywhere else I can see.
3. Doesn't look like you can "Preview" messages created on .../private_messages/ before sending. I'm only seeing a "Save" button.
4. PM’s seem to get posted to the wrong “Subject” thread, even if you re-enter the intended subject in the subject field. (Maybe they go to the first thread between the participants… or maybe by alphabet?)

COMMENTS PAGES
1. Indicate newly posted comments with “NEW”. This was a very helpful feature in the website’s previous incarnation.
2. Allow more comments per page - previously you could select how many comments were displayed per page.

Thanks again for the therapy!

For the third day my password needed resetting to get me in.
The request email to reset password system works GREAT. Sends message instantly and the process is painless, but annoying. All in all, this is NOT a terrible problem for me and quite manageable.
Am logging in via a macBook, OS10.6.8 using FireFox 48.02. Did not have this problem before the site upgrade.

My avatar pic and account info all survived the upgrade fine and the password reset system leads me straight to my account. It is just the log in password recognition that has gone hinky.
My password choices are registered as "weak" by the evaluation system, but the "changes (are) recorded".

I've been poking around...in the show archive section, if you key in a year, the screen returns with shows from that year. but if you try to page forward in the event the show you're looking for is not on the first page, the screen reverts back to 1965 shows. It didn't happen each time, but something like 4 out of 5 times this happened.
Searching by venue didn't seem to work at all.

EDIT: seems to be corrected now...thanks

also...your GOTCHA is incredibly aggressive

They are all here: https://www.dead.net/forum/72336 There's actually a lot of good thought behind this, because it was often the case that something would sell out or otherwise become unavailable, but wait, there's this huge conversation attached, we can't just remove it... This way, we avoid causing further distress to people trying to order something that's been out of stock since 2011, and the conversations are in a nice safe place where folks can go right on conversing. So please do!

I'm with those that say the new site sucks! I definitely don't like the white background, and in my opinion the text is too small. Or are you throwing us older Heads in the trash?

This is definitely not a one-size-fits-all issue, but I (being old) find it helpful to use the Zoom In or equivalent in the browser's View menu, which makes things bigger. And also reduces whitespace. fwiw.

Every time I try and login it doesn't work. I have to reset my password every time. I have to go into the link in my email. Why won't it remember my password? I've tried on my phone and computer. It does the same thing on both.

Hi Marye...

Where do you find a Dave's pick where you can go to that particular pick and see Dave's chat, Music samples, and peoples comments. Then you click on it in the store and it just says sold out.

The discussion threads from the product pages moved here: http://www.dead.net/forum/72336 The reasoning behind this was finding a way to keep the discussions available and live even after the product was sold out. I'll see what I can find out about the Dave clips etc.

The search function does not work and you have to go page by page through all the years beginning with the first show to get to the one you're looking for. Is this still being worked on?

Please bring 'Shows by Year' back! And on another note, please up the number of comments viewable per page. 9-12 comments at a time just does not cut it when some threads are populated with hundreds of comments.
