Week of January 20-26, 2020
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead tunes from 1973, 1981, and 1987.
Our first selection is from the first leg of the Dead’s Fall Tour of 1973, during which much of the material from Wake Of The Flood (released October 15, 1973) was on display, along with some guest horn work by Joe Ellis and Martin Fierro. From 9/24/73 at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, we have this fine batch of second set music, featuring China Doll; Truckin'> Nobody's Fault But Mine> Jam > Eyes Of The World> Weather Report Suite; Sugar Magnolia.
Next up is music from the first night of a short three night East Coast tour just before the Dead headed to Europe for the Europe ’81 tour, with music from 9/25/81 at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. From this fine show we have Bird Song> Beat It On Down The Line ; Cumberland Blues; Passenger ; Althea; The Music Never Stopped.
Lastly this week is the first set from 9/16/87 at Madison Square Garden, the second night of a five night run at the Garden. The second song this night really caught us all off guard, not what we’d expected: Touch Of Grey> Scarlet Begonias ; Little Red Rooster; Dire Wolf; My Brother Esau; High Time; Let It Grow> Don't Ease Me In.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
