I get the feeling they might not be willing to go the extra mile on some of these cassette masters, like they are not sponge worthy or something.

..but I could be wrong.

I went 6/14 and 6/15, they were both cool shows. I enjoyed 6/14 more, I went with a good looking babe from work and we drank a whole bunch of wine outside before the show. I would like to see them release a West Coast box set, best of the Frost , Greek , and Ventura. Hopefully they wouldn't leave out any cool shows.

Thanks for all of the 85 show recommendations! I always listen to the sage advice from everyone on here in the comments sections. I have heard that Hershey show once befire so I need to give that, and all of the others that were recommended, a good listen.

My impression of 85 is that there may not be the long exploratory jams so to speak , but the energy is top notch. I know the energy might have been enhanced, but that was the way I guess. From the few shows I have heard from 85, that energy is contageous and it definitely gets me moving. Great stuff. I am looking forward to going down the 85 rabbit hole.

Serendipitous. Most nights, my 12 year old wonders down to watch parts of a movie before he crashes.. tonight we were watching part II of back to the future. Just as I read the post below, they were setting the Delorian to 1985, Back to the Future.

I love 85.. 82 and 85 are my early 80's go to for a host of reasons. I wrote a post years ago that showed the number of songs played each year and 85 was a big increase from prior years, a shocking increase. I need to dig up some data on this unless someone beats me to it.. but 85 was a burst of fresh, creative energy.

More on this when I am not so sleepy and buzzed. (shame on me). 85 was a very good year, until Jerry got busted in November.. the precursor to 1986.. but I digress #GlassHalfFull

Funny that you mention that Jim. I have a neighbor that just had a garage built this year. What is newly parked there? A DeLorean :-) We now have a DeLorean in the neighborhood. Our status as a neighborhood just went up a couple notches, tehe. :-)

P.S. I had a really low-gen tape of 6-22-85 that was so crisp, it became a favorite to listen to. Good sound and very good show. Pre-midi and yet plenty of weirdness to go around. Great Drumz! :-)

This a sweet show, this gets a lot of play at my house. Just wish it is 5.1. I also really like the bonus tracks from 1987, but I am a sucker for a solid Hey Pocket Way and My Brother Esau.

@JiminMD- That is so funny because I was going to type something about "firing up the flux capacitor if I wasn't heard from in week" at the end of my post. Then I thought I am letting too much of my sci-fi geeknees seep in. Of course this crew is all good with that so I should have gone with it.

Deadvikes etc., if your gear has it try Auro 2D for fake surround. Sometimes it works way better than Dolby for enhancing stereo mixes to surround; sounds more natural, and it will utilize your rear channels if you have them, Dolby often won’t..,
EDIT: as in rears, not sides or surrounds, those should be doing something with either codec.

Wow, digging the 17th. I only really remember any show specifics from the 16th, mostly because of the unusual set list. Of course I’ve watched the video numerous times so I’m sure that plays into it...both great shows, actually the 16th lost just a touch of its status for me this time? Not quite as razor sharp as I recall, but that’s nit picking compared to spring tour? Fun set list though, and the China Cat starts to really soar, then they sort a miss a gear on the Segway, but it’s subtle. We Can Run was ruff, but after that the rest is good, and of course the whole Terrapin through the weird fest is awesome, that’s the shizzle this boy is looking for. Yeah, some good 90s electronic mind eraser! Nice ease back to reality and scoop up your fragile ego off the lawn with China Doll, and dance her home with the Mags. Always dig a sweet Baby Blue.
Definitely picked a good time to come outta electric “retirement”!
17th is pretty solid all around, Brent slips a tad during Far From Me but they pull it out ok, Picasso Moon is the only thing I recall sounding like it wasn’t happening, and I was looking forward to more jam/weirdness, especially when they broke out the PITB where they did. That’s often a good launch pad for deep space 9, but not much of a jam comparatively, and then into an Eyes of all things? Good weirdness outta D/S, with the rest sorta status quo for the times.
All in all perhaps best trip ever. 85 was more nuts, stay up for days and rage etc, this trip I was like 28, with new 20 year old “Loose Lucy” “GF” , doing electric things not done in years, first time to SF/promised land, Oh and 2 awesome Warfield JGB shows in the middle of the six Dead shows to boot! Of course I got stuck paying for it for a while, long story, but it was totally worth it all. So summer 85 was a gas, but June 90 was a dream, a summer loving in the spring, fall, and winter, in the ocean, camping at half moon bay, hotels, pools, camping at Santa Cruz, and perhaps best of all, at dawn still feeling it as the sun came up and we were camped out in a Red Wood Forest State Park of some kind up by La Honda, whoa, that was some cool shit. Like having to drive AROUND huge trees where the road was literally built to go around rather than cut them down, so cool. So, we get there in the middle of the night, and you can tell the trees are there, but man at dawn when you could start to see to the tops.......still blows me away, THAT, I’ll always remember!
Perhaps best sunrise ever! So yeah, let’s just say we didn’t just get some,...well, let’s just say old Pig woulda been proud!
Ok, 2 quick related stories then I promise I’ll not pontificate on these ever again.
So back to, think last night of Cal Ex, as we’re sharing a room with like 4 or 5 other dudes, the happy rolling couple is feeling like folks often do under the conditions, but not possessing the modesty or lack of decorum to just get animal in the crowded, shared room, so eventually after much rolling and tumblin’ on the bed Etc, and after already getting kicked outta the pool several times over the 3 days, the bathroom seems like it’s going to have to work, remember, “the situation is the boss”, so that’s what happens...so we’re having a grand ole time and being relatively stealth....I think?, and everything’s all hunky dory until the sink counter that she’s perched on comes off the wall and crashes to the floor!!....Oooppss!
Well so much for stealth and now everyone’s freaked out about the damage so of course I do what anyone who’s ever been involved with R&R on the road, especially if ever for a living, and I get up and get all cleaned up and make sure I get to the office early while all the upstanding folks and traveling families are checking out etc, and so I proceed to complain in a loud enough voice to draw interest, but not loud enough to raise concern (object is to use the natives for benefit, power in numbers etc, not to scare, never want to scare the natives, unless on purpose of course), so your boy proceeds to ask for the manager and register a complaint about “what kind of unsafe place is this? etc, with both he and I realizing that all the guests in the looby are now totally listening, so I proceed to politely but firmly replay how just as I was leaning over to shave that one little tuff spot, and while leaning on said counter to do so, it suddenly, and terrifyingly jumps from the wall, but how luckily, tragedy was narrowly averted, only by my quick cat like reflexes, and how I only ended up with this little abrasion on my neck! (which of course conveniently for the situation happened during the previous evenings extra curricular frolicking in question.)
Yes sir HST and Cassidy both woulda been proud, especially when the manager apologized profusely and gave us a nice discount off the tab! Of course you could tell he was kinda wondering and started to mumble something about how could that actually happen etc, but we didn’t stick around for all that, I immediately turned, found the cutest little tyke and proceeded to lay on the “boy you folks sure must be proud“, and “what a well behaved cute little guy” etc as we’re literally backing out the door.....give me three steps mister for sure! Tru dat, all of it, I don’t care if you believe me or not as:
1) I was there, and
2) I have several witnesses!
I believe the statue of limitations on hotel rooms is up after 30 years?
The other story is that last early morning red wood sunshine daydream. So as we’re in the woods and thinking we’re all alone, so in other words we’re back at it again...hey, sun dresses and Guatemalan shorts come off pretty easy, so just as the suns coming up and we’re still riding the last electric waves, and the trees are magnificent, and the birds are starting to chirp, and the river is signing, and we’re actually living a real life sun shine daydream........along comes a park ranger up from the river pumping station! Oooopppss, hee-hee, well the poor gal seemed more embarrassed by it then we were, and of course as we’re literally rolling down the hill like a couple of squirrels in heat as I look over and wave and give er the biggest morning greeting and smile and act like absolutely nothing is wrong, LOL. Well she couldn’t get outta there fast enough, and hell, it’s California in a big state park, so I’m guessing it wasn’t the first or last time she saw some tweaked out hippies getting weird and naked! 😎
Ok, I’ve rambled on enough, but GOGD did ask for it, or at least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Lol

SPRING 85: used to know more but haven’t gone there in forever...know 4/7/85, my favorite Easter Sunday ever, is well worth a listen. Prime 85, yes Jer has a “tour cold” by then, but so what, sometimes I thing it adds to the affect. Dirty but dangerous!
Wilfred: yes the weirdness! It didn’t start up in 85, but they did bring it back in a big way..

This is a solid show Oroborous! Might be better than 6/16/90?? Well maybe not, but damn good. Highlights for me Shakedown Street, Birdsong, Eyes and Stella Blue are really good. Your favorite finish, Throwing Stones, Lovelight. Great encore with the Weight.

I had to palate cleanse. Listened to four Phil shows from 07 & 08 while refinishing my 100 year old wooden front door. Made what was a very unpleasant but much needed task almost enjoyable. Lots of aged and neglected delicate details to sand around. Phil didn't sing in too many of these (no need to comment on his vocal range). It was super rewarding. One of the shows started with a Cumberland, reminiscent of a recent feature Dave's Picks 16. Some ripping moments. Jackie Greene, Larry Campbell, Barry Sless, Warren Haynes, it was a multi-instrumentalist buffet and man.. to hear some well played pedal steel mixed in with fiddles, steel guitars, fenders and gibsons oh my, then the custom thing-a-magigies. Goodness, a guitar fest.

Visiting my parents tomorrow for the first time post covid, my did is in my mid 80's and had surgery yesterday. Outside only exercising caution and much distance.. both parents are old and have a serious list of chronic conditions. These are strange times we live in.. but the point, I doubt if I will get through a pick of the day tomorrow either. Did I say the best of the best Maryland crab cakes and cold beer?

Anyway.. great vibes here and some terrific picks. Hats off to the team effort and great tunes. What's in store today?

OROBOROUS I took your advice and I started with 6/14 @ the Greek Theatre. What a great show! I didn't look at the setlist, I just hit play. I was really suprised and happy with the Keep on Growing cover. Lots of great stuff in this show: The Let it Grow > Deal set 1 closer rocked. Then a Morning Dew to open the 2nd set? I didn't think they did that kind of thing in 80s. I even thoroughly enjoyed Bobby rocking the Smokestack Lightning. Plus the Comes a Time was sweet and according to the fan reaction on the tape and Deadbase- it hadn't been played in 5 years. So good....

Food for thought for the Pick of the Day: I am sticking with my 1985 time travel experiment, but I came across a post on FB talking about the Scarlet > Fire from 6/18/83. I sampled it, sounds good. This show might slip into the rotation for me, but not yet.

I thought that shit was hilarious, but maybe you had to be there?
I figured the likes of Casey Janes and Hendrixfreak would find humor?

6/18/83: my friends told me all about how cool the place was and what a great show, and especially about that S/F.
I’m still kicking myself for not going: had a ride, tix were easy etc, Doooaaahhh! We more than made up for it the next year!

10/9/76: awesome! Only heard this first show sorta once and haven’t made it to the second night yet as I just picked DP 33 from real gone a couple months ago. So glad to dig in and wow, really dug the second set especially. Prolly my favorite thing about 76 is how well they segwayed in and out of the songs, especially with the bigger band. Usually the bigger the band, the clunkier and harder to turn on a dime like that. Smells like rehearsal to me? 7/18/76 possibly being the best example of this?
It’s funny as 10/9 still got some of the laid back 76 air to it, but as with other shows as the year progressed, the transition to a more 77 urgency is noticeable. Of course I’m betting a little R&R good natured rivalry and a giant stadium full of SF nuts might of had something to do with it also? Definitely need to get more familiar with this Dick (sorry, couldn’t help it 😏). In fact I need to get right with this one or the ole senator from the great state of Vegas will subpoena me and bring me in front of the Dead ethics board.

You were definitely touring in way more style then we did.. but the majority of my touring was during my broke ass teenage years. I shoulda stayed on the road, but the call of the wild made me venture off in a different direction and once I made it back, things in the scene just weren't the same and honestly neither was I.

Glad you were able to talk yourself out of the broken sink and pat the darling little kid on the head with a wink.

Your too kind. I didn’t mean you. Your always thoughtful and inclusive. It’s just that certain folks tell stories and everyone goes nuts. I spend valuable time trying for fun and interesting reads and often get little or no reply...nothing, crickets...a shut the F up would at least be something....so I’ll take that as a sign to shut up and just regurgitate the usual line of cheerleader BS that is the status quo here. It’s cool, I just thought folks liked to hear/learn about something besides the same 30 or 40 shows over and over every year? Back in the day our 2nd favorite pass time besides going to shows, was to debate shows. Not to argue or “be right” etc, but just back and forth banter cause it was fun. Like some working shmucks at the bar arguing about the Yankees or what not.
Sorry, not meant as a rant, just an awakening of sorts. All is well as Kevin Bacon says at the end of Animal House!

Oh, and that was only the second time we ever flew to shows and we camped as much or more than we hoteled. When we did, there were usually too many people in the room, ya know, normal tour style! Lol
So though we did “style it” comparatively, it was a vacation and one time thing and as I say I got stuck paying for not just my end but a bunch of free loaders too. Funny because I had just got my first CC for this trip and ended up taking quite awhile to unfuck it! But it was totally worth it!

Went to both Dead/Who shows, took tons of pictures as I was pretty close to the stage and even managed to sneak "sorta" backstage for a spell. Somewhere in my bottomless pit of boxed-up possessions, I have a picture of Garcia dancing with his shirt off during The Who's set - my hand to God.

The Who played great, but both shows were identical, almost note for note it seemed. I think they had an extended encore the second day, but the rest was the same, IIRC. GD knocked it out of the park, of course. And the stage looked awesome, thanks to Bill Graham and company.

I read somewhere soon after the shows that an amazed Townshend quizzed Garcia about how in the world could they play 2 completely different shows on consecutive days, and said The Who had been playing the same show for months, even years, maybe.

Anyway, there were definitely separate camps of Who/Dead fans with little crossover that I could notice. But the weather was perfect and everyone had a blast.

Interesting side note: I was living in Berkeley at the time, and the summer before (1975), Pete Townshend and family resided in Walnut Creek, a town about 15 minutes from Berkeley. Can't remember why they were there, though.

Haven't read all the posts, I have literally spent every waking hour the last two days refinishing my 116 year old original gothic style (I think) front door. Big, heavy, way too much detail and relief work in the wood and probably neglected for at least 20 to 25 years. It's the only thing that I haven't redone in the front of the house.

We are not entertaining indoors for all the river rats this year, so the front porch has a welcomed haven and keeps the river rat traffic from entering the home.. But the door has been bothering me for a year or two. This social distancing stuff sucks, but it's better than the alternative. Outdoors and safely apart.. so I bit the bullet and fixed the one thing that was bothering me. ..and man, it was a beast. Two full days just to get it sanded, the wood treated and a stained. Whew, I did f'up the stain, the hard part is over.

So anyway.. catching up on posts. The day on the green.. wow. To have been there! Second.. Oroboros, you should worry not.. you are one of the most entertaining, kindest people that writes shit here. This whole thread has been a good vibe haven.

Now.. I after leaning over a fixed space using electric sanders, Dremel's, hand sanding until my fingers are raw, dropping and spilling shit, I could go on... Werewolves of Friendsville. So I am filling up a very strong drink and

Funny, I was just reading about Pete Townsend and that he was living there at the time.

I guess his daughter wrote about it in her autobiography and mentioned being an "American Suburb Child" with the likes of Justin Kreutzmann.

Yes, always a winner for me. And I agree Oroborous, you can hear the band moving quite a bit different than they were in June 76. Love the Scarlets from this era. New Minglewood rocks. The whole second set rocks. Man, what a run it was. Looking forward to 10/10/76 tomorrow.........

Dude, are you kidding me? You and your evil twin (where’s The Other One been?) have some of the best stories around these parts. Would be a shame to keep those to yourself. I think most would agree that it’s better than reading copied set lists and plagiarized liner notes?

Anyways, Mrs Casey and I had a similar experience in the bathroom at her friends lake house in the Ozarks circa summer 2004, except the victim was towel rods, and thankfully not the sink 😂. We still joke about that....had our 15th anniversary yesterday, so I must have done something right !!! 😉

I admire your quick thinking with the hotel manager. I do feel bad for the kid though...I mean without a sink to wash your hands...I’ll bet his hair stood straight up all day...There’s Something About Mary Comes To Mind!!!

It's hard to imagine fans not digging what the Dead were laying down.
I wonder if The Who performances are recorded and around anywhere?

BOLO24 - they mention the following - "The stage was in center field, and so of course the outfield bleachers were restricted to those people backstage who wanted to see the performances. The story goes that Garcia was out there late in the afternoon, dancing to The Who without his shirt on. No photographic evidence survives, to my knowledge."

I am with VGuy on this (as I have found I am on most things...) Dick's 33 is HIGH on my list, and is my favorite 76 release. I personally prefer 10/9, but 10/10 has some truly great moments - I really love the TOO>Stella Blue on this.

I also agree wholeheartedly with Casey J and the others here - Oroborous, your stories are great, keep em' coming.

I'm not always able to remember names, dates, details.

Sometimes I'll look at a set list and think damn that looks cool and then I'll put it on and be like.. I know this show! I love this show, this show is awesome, why haven't I been listening to this show everyday and how could I forget that I love this show?!?!?!

Now, you might say.. well you should see the doctor. But I'm not really talking about that.

What I'm talking about is how the music jars the memory.. and it's not even memory, it's almost like FEELING.
The music jars the FEELING you had when you heard it before and you remember that FEELING, cuz it's a wonderful FEELING.

Yesterday I had that when I was listening to St. Stephen > NFA > St. Stephen.
I know that piece of music. All it's intricacies. It's sweet licks. I've listened to it over and over countless times forgotten. And when I hear it again I remember the FEELING and am taken right back.

Anyhow.. all that to say. Fuckin' LOVE 10/9/76 and am so glad to remember that I do.

That Set 2 is blazed into my brain.
The FEELING I got is I KNOW this tape! (of course it's not a tape.. but you get what I'm talking about).

I believe I had this as a youngster, but I couldn't find any info about when this show started circulating. Not sure if it was broadcast on FM in the area? Looks like it played on GDHour in 1995, but I FEEL like I had it before then. Memory is so weird, but my memory is that this was one of my go to tapes in the day. Some shows, I know I had early on, 10/9/82 for example, but some FEEL like I had them early on, this being one, and it was formative. Or I could just be tripping.

What a GREAT show and that 2nd Set is epic!

As for today's wonderful trip, I cheated a little yesterday, I was under the impression initially that we were trying to listen to both yesterday, but then OB cleared that up, but I really wanted to hear PITB on my bike ride and it was sunny and epic and shit man.. there's no rules. So hot damn, I'm glad I did that, it was the perfect music and it took me to perfect places and now as I'm hearing it again this Morning, I love the Goddamn Grateful Dead!

No matter how many or how few Grateful Dead concerts any of us attended or even if some of the participants who share their stories here never saw the band with Jerry, does the music make you feel good or reflect the blues so many of us are feeling these days, then the music heals. If some kid was only 12 years old and saw the the band only once in 1995 , very good fortune indeed. If some young person went and saw Dead and Company only once last year , good fortune. If someone of ANY age never saw any of the offshoot bands let alone the real Grateful Dead yet the music speaks to them, good medicine, good fortune indeed.We need all the help we can get, and share.

What is it about might as well? This song seems to get better with age to me. Another high energy performance. Love the FOTD and I first set Wharf Rat, unique.
And like 10/9, the second set is so good. Both of these shows are a treat.

Speaking of Might as Well, might have to put on the 6/17/91 Blu-ray later tonight.

Hard to imagine when we can get back to the movie theaters at full strength. Had a blast last year at the MUATM.

10/10/76 yesterday and 10/3/87 today.
Another great 76 that was put in perspective from that interesting post about DOG and specifically The Who/Dead shows. (Thanks for that GOGD) But now we REALLY need Bolos pics!
Personally these shows, and this release, just rose in status. Not only cause it’s sum good sheet mon, but because they BROUGHT it even though it sounds like they were dealing with three main things R&R bands hate:
- getting up and playing early
- an empty venue
- opening for another bands fans who aren’t interested etc

Dead Workingmen indeed! Not only that, they stick around and party, with JG dancin topless. Many bands would have been whiney beeatches, played short and shity, and took there toys and went home. No these boys were true professionals. Sure they probably were compensated well, and helps the ole BGP relationship, and they might even have asked to play first, considering Monterey. I’m sure there were plenty of heads there, and it was a nearby home show, but still, the level of playing and energy on these fine shows are only enhanced by the fact that they did so in spite of the situation. Cudos to all on a fine release. Can’t believe it took me so long to grab this one...Man I dig 76 more and more!
10/10 was another fine show, and I dug the space. That’s a couple times now I’ve been pleasantly surprised by a 76 space! Love the 1st set Dancin>>Wharf Rat>>Dancin, had to check, thought it was into the second set and I missed something, lol. Overall though, I think I prefer 10/9 just because I’m a sucker for those awesome, tight, segways ala 7/18/76. If I didn’t have such a good CD FM? original source? copy of 7/18/76 that I got on amazon?, anyway, if I didn’t have such a good copy I’d be lobbying non stop, as that show has been a WTF since way back when. It was one of my first tapes back in 77, and being a relatively low gen FM, it was probably one of my early tapes that really sounded good. Yeah that ones a beast, but I digress.
So, onto 10/3/87 today from the wonderful month of rocktober. I believe theres YouTube video of it so maybe I’ll wait and watch it tonight on the big screen? If not, that matrix vguy dialed up looks good. Hell maybe I’ll end up doing both ; )
