    Pig - endings

It's late on a Sunday and that means bed soon, but since my quick reply to TD's inquiry below, I've been further thinking about the tragedy of Pig - and I certainly think of it that way despite the manifest personal responsibility for the consequences of near incessant alcohol abuse from a young age. It's a spiraling decline that seems particularly pathos-laden given the picture of a gentle, genial man that emerges from all the familiar documentary sources.

I take notes or attempt to catalogue page references by subject from my little library of the Dead, but realize I've done a poor job on this particular subject - and certainly during the general time frame implied by TD's question. So, I wanted to share a couple relevant - and heartbreakingly poignant - passages from Jackson's "Garcia/American Life" that I've revisited since:

First, McIntire speaking: "I remember one day Garcia coming into my office and saying, 'Look, I'm really worried about Pig. I think his life is in danger, and I want to do whatever we can. The band'll pay for everything. Let's find out if there's anything we can do.' So I researched it and I found out the most famous place in the world for liver problems was Sheila Sherlock's clinic in London. But my doctor, Sandor Bernstein, said there was a guy at UCSF [University of California and San Francisco] who was as good. So we slotted Pig with him. And Pig jumped in and did, too. He stopped drinking and he learned all the things about nutrition that he could. He really tried, but it was too late."

And second: "[On the tour] he rode on the hard bus, this Danish bus, which was sort of like the crew bus," Annette Flowers said. "It was the quieter of the two buses usually. Pigpen lived on the back bench of that bus. ... I think that trip sort of sunk it for him; put him over. It was really grueling in a lot of ways." "He got knocked off that bench five or six times," Rock Scully recalled. "He rolled off that bench and a couple of times he really hurt himself I could see it; he really hurt his kidneys and bruised himself. I'd have to help him off the bus."

"He really tried, but it was too late." A short, simple statement, but one that can put fault lines in even a strong foundation. I recall reading that Pig sent Veronica away as his condition became increasingly acute, which, in light of other information, clearly underscores what a lonely and frankly terrifying period those final 12-18 months must have been for that kindhearted soul./K

    Tape Trade Policy

I posted this in the taper forum, but thought this may be the better spot (also, patience is not a virtue of mine). I am sure this exists in written form somewhere, I just can't seem to find it.

What is the official band policy for trading in shows that have been officially released? Specifically, I am wondering about the ones that were released officially but are out of print. Seems to me that if they are not for sale currently, we would not be costing the band money by trading those shows. In fact, the only folks it would cost are those selling the out of print releases at a profit on the secondary market. Just curious what the official policy is on this considering the volume of official releases these days.

Yes. I suspect Pig was resting from his short reunion tour with the band in December '71 and fortifying his commitment to sobriety in what had to have been an unfathomably difficult lifestyle change (if not in terms of medical necessity, then certainly in practice).

"Ace" was recorded from January - March '72, but recall that Pig's alcohol-related health problems forced a touring hiatus in August '71 that culminated with hospitalization in September for bleeding ulcers, hepatitis, and spleen problems. He was only able to rejoin the Dead beginning early December in Boston, at which time I recall Phil describing Ron as shockingly frail in his book. Not surprisingly, Pig's contributions are limited, and while progressively more energetic throughout the month (at least to my ears), they are still anemic by historical standards; though by NYE he sounds beat.

In retrospect, it's a miracle that the Dead community (once and future) got Pig back in functional form for the brilliantly recorded European tour, especially given how quickly he dropped off radar for related health problems afterward.

EDIT: And yes, "sabbatical" serves as a neat and entirely appropriate bit of shorthand in conversation among those who know....

essentially it was a dead album with everyone on board contributing except for Micky who was on a sabbatical, (as i see it) and Pig, why wasnt Pig contributing? was he too sick at the time?

I live in the UK and recently ordered daves picks 4 and other items from the store. I received no communication regarding dispatch and after sending several emails to customer service who always told me they had passed them onto the relevant dept for action, but I never got a reply. In the meantime I received an email informing an item on my order was cancelled but with no excplanation. I telephoned in the end and was told by someone called Zoe that the reason my order was cancelled was because international orders are not accepted. When asked why I could place a confirmed order and be quoted international postage she could not answer. Can someone please explain is this true and why is this allowed to occur. It is strange to encourage international business then not accept it. peter

Is more oriented toward sales than community. I hope sincerely that they are working out the kinks raher than moving to this as a permanent format. It was useful to know who was on line. The old search engine functioned better than the new one. One good thing about this format is that the spammers seem to be pretty much banished. I hope dead.net can get the best of both worlds together when they bring the Chat Room out ofBeta and get the whole catalog once again on line. It is beyong me that this whole project was taken up at Christmas time when most retailers are doing more than 40% of their year-long business. Ah well, I have long ago stropped trying to fathom the mysertium tremendous powers behind Rhino on Grateful Dead issues.... So, my questions is: Does Rhino plan to go back to the old format once the bugs are worked out?

whether the chat room, the search tool, and the who's online features are on the to-do list, yes. In the meantime, you can get a list of who's online by going to the chat link above; the list is on the right of the chatroom page. It is, as noted earlier, a list of who's online, not who's in the chatroom at this juncture. As to community, well, it's not like it can be artificially generated, whatever tech snake oil guys say. The members make it happen, we just have a venue and try to manage it as well as we can within the constraints we've got.

I simply want to change my shipping address for my Dave's Picks 2013 subscription. Unlike virtually every other online retailer, I am unable to manage my account and order information in the Dead.net store. I had hoped by now that the store would have transitioned into a user-friendly arena. I phoned the customer service hotline and was told that I could make no changes to my order! The first volume of the 2013 Dave's Picks subscription is still roughly two months away from actual shipping, but no changes can be made. Ridiculous. I have already been billed and paid for an entire year worth of music that I need to have shipped to a new address and am having difficulty being told that this is not possible. I know that is indeed possible but wish that I didn't have to traverse so many hoops to get it done. What needs to be done? Who can help?

How do I find a particular show in the Taper's section, specifically from 10/18/80 and 10/19/80? Cosmicbadger had created a list of vines ( where is it now?) and I think there is a similar document for the Taper's section.

Hey folks! I'm new here and I had a quick question. I work for Brookvale Records; we are the independent record label out of Long Island, NY releasing the Dick's Picks Series on vinyl. I'd like to start sharing info on here about our latest releases. But of course I wish to do so in an appropriate manner. Before I started posting about Dick's Picks Vol. 3 & 4 on sale and info on the upcoming Vol. 5 release, I thought I'd check in here. I'm certainly aware of community guidelines around forums like this acting as a fan, but I'm curious what the guidelines are for me as a "business." Am I permitted to post photos or links to our Store page, etc. within reason? If so, what specific forums would be appropriate for that? Don't want to be shunned for spamming!

Hi, I'm the forum moderator. Excellent questions all. Couple of possibilities here; you could post in the Your Own Storefront thread, which some shops and craftspeople do, or we could start a thread specifically for the DP on Vinyl series. Lemme know what you'd prefer.

Hello, hope this is the right place to ask a question-this site is hard to figure out.About 8 years ago my friend gave me a show on a cd that had a year and Gay Parees written on it,assuming this meant Paris and I cant remember the year but it sounded like mid seventies-cant find the cd.It had a killer Friend with a long, beautiful keyboard solo in it.I used to play this for my young daughter, she loved this particular version. How can I find this show? The archive has a F.O.T.D. listed in Paris on 9-20-74 but its not the same version that was from my show. Can anyone help me find this show as my daughter who recently went away to college specifically asked me to find this song for her.Maybe there is hope to turn her on to the dead yet, as I have been trying for 18 years!Any help would be greatly appreciated.

which is not infallible, reveals no Paris shows between 1974 and 1990. The latter would sound quite a bit different from the '70s.

Hi guys and gals,I am collecting up stories from a particular show in Portland on June 12, 1980. During the second song in the second set, Mt. St Helens blew 54.5 million cubic yards of ash into the air which drifted over the Portland area as the show was getting over with. The after show parties are legendary and I wanted to see if any of the folks who remember that night would be willing to share any details. Please let me know. This was an extremely interesting confluence of thought and some significant ideas were born that night. It would be great to see where any of it went. Thanks.

Hi, Just curious what happened to the Taper's section --- no new entries after the Oct 14-20 entry? That's as much a question as it is a statement: I haven't seen a new entry in over a week, which is very odd, so perhaps I am doing something wrong? BTW, your all doing a great job. I look forward to each week's offerings with great anticipation! Thank you!

Is there any plans to publish the 4th Volume of 30 Days of Dead? Matching the show and date with the download was something I looked forward to during November, it is kind of like a month long holiday celebration.

Just wondering why Heads north of the U.S can't play the 30 DOD contest. It seems wrong to me. Hell I'd pay for the shipping if that was an issue. That pretty much goes for ANY contest that Deadnet puts on. Lots of us up here.

The issue is that legal requirements for contests vary from country to country, and crafting a contest that's legally compliant inside and outside the US is prohibitively complex. We're sorry about this, as it is certainly a bummer for non-US folks.

I would like to obtain a soundboard-quality copy of the Dead concert in Vancouver 40 years ago so that I can surprise an old friend who attended the show with me, for his 60th birthday. I would gladly pay to get this recording.

I have downloaded a Taper's version from archive.org, but would like something with better fidelity. The soundboard version on archive.org is much better but can't be downloaded from the site anymore. I just don't want to rip off the Dead in any way. Snazzy, yes! I'm also desiring to obtain the May 17, '74 Vancouver Wall of Sound concert, which was a blast also. Three days after the new Dave's Picks offering! These Canada gigs seem off the radar.

I do not know of any such commercial product. You might ask in the Tapers thread in the forums in case someone has/knows of the existence of a better recording than what you've got. You could also email David Lemieux at vault@dead.net; he lives in that part of the world too, and might be able to shed some light on the state of vault tapes of that show.
