    June 18 - June 24, 2007
June was always busy month in the Grateful Dead’s touring schedule, and we once again cover more than 20 years of recorded music.

Our first selection this week is this long Lovelight from 6/20/69 at the Fillmore East. In an ideal world, there would be nice 7.5 ips reels of this show (and this tour, really), but all that exists in the vault are cassette masters. But, there was some great music played on this tour, so although it doesn’t sound quite as good as a reel master, the music certainly can be appreciated. A unique element of this Lovelight is that, after Jerry seemingly has some guitar troubles (broken string?), he picks up his acoustic guitar and offers what must be one of the only, or perhaps the only, acoustic guitar solo in the middle of Lovelight.

Moving forward a few years, to 6/24/73 in Portland, Oregon, is the second set jam of Dark Star>Eyes of the World>China Doll, a perfect 1973 jam. This little summer tour of 1973 (Vancouver on 6/22 through to Universal Amphitheatre on 7/1) is often overlooked due to the magnificent quality of the February-April shows, and the October-December 1973 run of perfection, but there was plenty of excellent music played on this short tour. We’ll be bringing you more of this tour next week, as it certainly contains a few shows that deserve greater recognition.

We’ll next jump ahead to 1985, to Alpine Valley. This version of Keep on Growing demonstrates the tape quality limitations of many 1980s-era soundboards, specifically a not-too-good mix. This problem is often different venue-by-venue, as evidenced by this jam from the next show in Cincinnati on 6/24/85, Samson and Delilah>He’s Gone>Smokestack Lightning>Cryptical Envelopment. These 1985 audio clips are from the Beta PCM digital masters, which often have quite severe drop-out issues, as evidenced by the drop-out in Samson and Delilah (the Iko Iko that preceded Samson and Delilah was plagued with drop-outs and was unusable here; on another note, we’ll be sure to bring you the post-Space portion of the Cincinnati show in the future to complete the Cryptical sequence). We’ll have some Alpine 84 material in a couple of weeks that sounds excellent; it goes to show, you don’t ever know…

In 1989, the band played the well-known Summer Solstice pay-per-view show, but what often falls under the radar is the middle-night of this Shoreline run, 6/19/89. From that great show is this Stuck Inside of Mobile (with the Memphis Blues Again)-Bird Song first set sequence. These were the first shows recorded on multi-track tape in preparation for Without A Net, and although no parts of these shows were included on Without A Net, it’s good to know that first-cabin 24-track tapes of these Shoreline shows exist.

A year later, the band was at Autzen Stadium in Eugene sharing the stage with Little Feat. As anyone who was there will remember, these shows began at 12 noon, and ended around 5 PM, allowing concert-goers to go for a nice meal after the shows, perhaps a canoe ride down the river beside the stadium, catch a movie, and be back at the Red Lion by 11 PM. This was also the run where Bill Graham read a quote from stage from the Eugene Chief of Police along the lines of “I’d rather work eight Grateful Dead concerts than one University of Oregon football game.” From these shows is the second set closing jam of The Wheel>I Need A Miracle>Morning Dew on 6/23/90.

Much had changed a year later, specifically the addition of Bruce and Vince on keyboards. From 6/22/91 in Chicago is the show opening Hell In A Bucket-Shakedown Street, with Jerry in particular having a blast during Shakedown Street, evidently having fun with the MIDI effects on his guitar.

From Deer Creek on 6/23/93, here is one of the nicest little Lazy River Roads. This song is certainly under-represented on official releases, so we wanted to make sure you had a good one to check out.

Lastly this week is another taste of 5/5/78 in New Hampshire by popular demand. This second-set closing sequence of Not Fade Away>Stella Blue>Around and Around is typical of the era, which is to say somewhat predictable, but very inspired. Complete with reel-flip, to retain the authenticity of the master reels.

Come back next week to hear a bit more of the aforementioned summer tour of 1973, some cool jams from 1984, 1985 and 1987, and a quirky piece from 1969. Feel free to write with questions, comments, suggestions or requests.

This band never ceases to amaze me! The Dark Star is supurb, the bass line around the 5 minute mark, the little drum solo before flawlessly slipping back to the main riff then it's off to space, WOW! If that's not jazz or at least the Dead's take on it than I don't know what is, check em out around the 25 minute mark! It boggles the mind. EM

This is a great, great show...the set list is nothing special but man the playing was fantastic. A really unknown gem...maybe sometime you can bust out the China-Rider. The day before was great too and GDTS laid first row right in front of Jer on me...only Brent and Mickey were closer to Jerry than me that night and it was awesome. Some of that show would be great as well...say the Pockey Way->Iko

great choices here, can't wait to download them. If possible, could you track down April 26, 1969, the Electric Theater for the only performance of "Whats become of the Baby"

OK!Fine! Music's good as usual,but... what about 74? You mean to tell me you don't have any tapes available? Too bad there's nothing coming next week either.. Don't you know 74 was a terrific year?

Thanks again David. The audio industry could really learn something from you guys. I'm an addict for music, and honestly, I need new music each week, and I buy a lot of stuff. A few years ago I stopped buying everything dead and dead-related. Now I'm back on the track, just because of your work. Can't wait for week 41 in October, just to see if you can find the Scarlet/Fire/Playing/Terrapin from 10/08/81.

I was wondering if we would get any of the Hershey, Riverbend, Cuyahoha Falls, Jerriweather stuff...I know the masters and mix do suffer. But I am PSYCHED about this little nug above. It has always been a personal fav. That summer was AWESOME. And as usual, cant wait to hear the rest of the nuggets either. Cheers! This has been a great education in sound and the band's development, thanks! As for 1974, for rommel55, check out the archives for May. There's 5/12 in Reno, 5/14 in Missoula (just beautiful!), 5/17 in Vancouver, and 5/19 in Portland. And for show 41 in October (along with copenhagen81's request), what about 10/10/68, Mickey and the Heartbeats at the Matrix! The whole show is stupendous madness, I wonder if there's a vault tape available? I haven't seen a Death Don't Have No Mercy show up yet!

David, Can't thank you enough for doing this weekly. It truly is amazing. When I think of June & Grateful Dead and June I tend to think 1991 (for the most part). The 6/22/91 show is really great (there were tons of great shows that summer) and I'm glad you played part of it. I always wanted to see this show and the one (I think it's 6/17/91) as a Dick's Picks release. (I'm not sure if the dates right, but it's the one that opens with "Eyes of the World"). I always call that the "Dark Star" show! A real gem from the later days. Thanks again, Paul.

I just recently discovered this lovely little feature and have gone back and gathered up all of the tasty nuggets previously released. Thank you very much for your efforts. I thoroughly agree with Copenhagen81 who said "A few years ago I stopped buying everything dead and dead-related. Now I'm back on the track, just because of your work." Thank you.I would like to add my voice to another I saw on an earlier week who asked for a single "Download them all" link at the bottom of the article for those of us who always get everything. If you get confused, listen to the music play! ChinaRider

Thankyouthankyouthankyou for including stuff from the 85 Cincy show. That was my "gettin' it" show -- second time seeing GD, but the first time I really understood. Whenever I had someone ask me to explain what the Dead was about, I ALWAYS popped in an aud of that night's second set -- and I converted quite a few people that way. Keep 'em coming...

great job as usual getting the nugs out to us! i always see that there are lots of problems with a lot of the vaults 80's boards....why not make bad ass matrixes out of the tapes that leave a little to be desired in the sbd? I know there are some matrixes circulating that would knock your socks off.. anyway..thanks again!! mike

Great picks this week. I sure would love to hear the vault copies of 6/26-28/87 Alpine shows. Even if the quality is sub par, I would be the most Grateful person on the forum. Thanks for Eugene '90, Shoreline '89 and Chicago '91 (I was there)!!!!

I absolutely love everything that you send our way; on almost every track there's that tiny, extra twist that was never heard before or since. But I think I have detected, in your selection process, a slight preference for extraordinary performances by mr. Lesh. Nothing wrong with that, of course, nobody loves a bass solo more than I do, but I also have a soft spot for the really dense Jerry meltdowns, you know the ones where he carefully sidesteps every time he gets too close to anything resembling a conventional scale? Those moments always leave me shaking my head with a big silly grin on my face, much to the amusement of my fellow commuters. More Jerry, please!

Well... to speak the truth I've not just checked all those very nice tapes from 74.I've been listening to those very same tapes for awhile. Fact is I can't get enough of that good thing... Just compare the amount of tapes from any other year (take 70 for ex.)and the few tapes originating from 74. That's the problem!!! I wish Mr Lemieux were reading my messages... P.S. doesn't it mean "The Best"?

I have been looking for a SB copy of Ann Arbor 4-6-89 for years. This is one show I am suprised is not on the top of the list for many DeadHeads. This was the seacond show of a 2 night run. People the night after the first show was calling in family to get there for the next show. The lot the next day was very special, there was a feeling in the are, everybody was talking about how specail tonght was going to be. Man did the boys pull it off on that night. one of those nights where you did not move your body the music did it for you. PLEASE put this out for us as one of the Vault Shows David. Check it out and see what I mean

"track down April 26, 1969, the Electric Theater for the only performance of "Whats become of the Baby" While this has been debated in the past it's generally accepted that the band did not actually perform "What's Become Of The Baby" this night or any other night as you point out. This concert took place while the band was recording "Aoxomoxoa" and what did happen that night is that Bear played a rough mix from the session tapes through the PA while the band played some space music live on stage. If I'm not mistake, and David please correct me if I'm wrong, there are two SBD masters of this show. One set being on cassette and the other on reels, with the reels missing the encore because the deck was being used to play back the studio tape.

I had a show once that had GD playing on stage and Ken Kesey reciting poetry to it. I thought it was a Halloween or New Year's, or Chinese New Year show, but for the life of me I cannot seem to remember it at all. What I do remember is the greatest Standing on the Moon. Jerry sounds like he's going to cry. It is just beautiful. I'd love to get my hands on it again. A little help from my friends please? Biggin'

Biggin'..... I have that show somewhere, if we're talking about the same event. It was just after Bill Graham's fatal helicopter crash, and Kesey was reciting the e.e.cummings poem about Buffalo Bill shooting clay pigeons. It ends like this (if memory serves me): "...so how do you like your blue-eyed son now, mister Death?" I think I have it on tape, otherwise I would have burnt a copy for you. Bjorn

Dave, Please keep them coming! Your selections are tremendous. One request - the Dead acoustic is music to the ears. If you could give us a little taste without electric, it would make many Rochester, NY residents very happy! Again, Mondays are so much better with your selections. Beecue
