    May 20 - May 26, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we have music spanning 11 later years in the Grateful Dead's history, 1982-1993.

We'll start things out with music from the Spring Tour of 1982, which featured plenty of great playing (plus Bob and Jerry's first appearance on Letterman). From Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on 4/11/82, we have the start of the second set featuring Bertha>Samson and Delilah, Never Trust A Woman, He's Gone>Truckin'.

From the Spring Tour of 1988 we now have the entire first set of 4/3/88, the first of a three night run in Hartford, CT. Jerry lost his voice at this show, with the signs of this appearing early in the show, and by the end of the show, during Black Peter, his voice was totally shot. It seems appropriate that they opened the show with two Bob songs: Promised Land>Greatest Story Ever Told, Althea, Little Red Rooster, Cold Rain and Snow, Stuck Inside Of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, Box Of Rain, Don't Ease Me In.

From five years later, on 3/27/93 in Albany, NY, the first night of a three night run the Knickerbocker Arena, we have the start of the second set featuring Eyes Of The World>Estimated Prophet>Comes A Time>Corrina. It was in Albany on 3/25/90 that the Grateful Dead returned to the slower, more-1974-esque versions of Eyes Of The World, so it felt good when they played it in this arrangement again on their return three years later. Comes A Time had also become rare by the early/mid-1990s, so this was a real treat as well. I attended these shows and saw several songs that I'd only hear the Dead play once in concert (Comes A Time, Casey Jones, Here Comes Sunshine, Eternity).

Be sure to join us here next week for more tunes from the vault.

Last night, I wanted to hear a Bob version of 'The Same Thing' so I checked the index and saw that it had been played the week of Jan. 31-Feb. 6 2011. I ended up enjoying the first set from 3-10-93. I didn't make it all the way through the set to Let it Grow, and the reading of Stagger Lee was a little tepid (the first one of the year and the second song in the set, odd placement), but I really enjoyed the relaxed feel of the rest of the set. It absolutely hit the spot. It's nice to see you're going back the 'first half of '93' well this week with the Albany, too!

9/9/74 pretty sleepy affair EXCEPT for Playin', and the jam out of Truckin' (which could go on for another 5-10 minutes as far as I am concerned). It's amazing how they could get way out there, and yet play mundane stuff at the same show. listened to 8/22/68 recently?

Can you pass the Grey Poupon? Sorry, I only have Dijon(France) 9/18/74, and it sure leaves a fine taste in the mouth. It could be said, though not accurately, that this condiment was named specifically for the September 18 performance. Don't get me started about the time they played in Salisbury!

I recall Jerry slamming the mic down during Black Pete at this show. I though it was because the mic was malfunctioning or something rather than Jerry's voice going down hill. This should be renamed the "Black Peter Tour". Of the 6 shows I went to, they plyed the f*cker 5 times, including back to back nites at Worcester. Don't get me wrong, Black Pete is a great tune, but 5 out of 6 what are the odds! It's alright, fellas . . . we all are far from perfect . . . which made the GD capable of achieving imperfection which some nights meant less than perfect and others beyond perfefection (aka magic!). This is what separates the GD from any other phenomenon on earth/human history much less any other band on earth! my 2 cents

Hey Man, Lots of high energy at this Hartford show. Check the crowd noise! Many bright spots in the music along the way on this East Coast swing. Hampton, Meadowlands, Hartford, Worcester: all were 3 night runs. That's 12 shows in 15 days. A good piece of work. Merci beaucoup Monsieur Lemieux shwack in nh

not quite as exciting as Spring 77 but the shows I caught on a cold, wet Saturday night at the Centrum in Worcester Mass and a couple nights later at Brendan Byrne arena in New Jersey were really special. The scene was truly a trip in itself, a really interesting bunch of friendly characters to say the least. A couple months later everything changed with Touch of Grey bringing on hordes of people to the scene.

A huge thanks for the sound quality here. Of course it's the source- (direct from the Vault!) and also the media player that's state of the art. Listening to this weeks 93 selection, and it sounds amazing. Is the sound release quality- of course not. What it is though is clear, precise, and a great pleasure to listen to. Thanks!
