Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week, we have music spanning five years in the 1980s, from 1982, 1983 and 1987, a fine batch of East Coast Grateful Dead.
Our first stop this week is at Nassau Coliseum on 4/11/82, on the very good spring tour of 1982. From the start of the second set we have Bertha > Samson And Delilah ; Never Trust A Woman ; He's Gone > Truckin'.
From 364 days later, when the Dead found themselves in Morgantown, WV on 4/10/83, we have the end of the second set, featuring The Wheel> Playing In The Band > China Doll > Sugar Magnolia, U.S. Blues.
Lastly this week we have the entire first set from 9/16/87 at Madison Square Garden, the second night of a five night run at MSG, featuring Touch Of Grey > Scarlet Begonias ; Little Red Rooster ; Dire Wolf ; My Brother Esau ; High Time; Let It Grow > Don't Ease Me In. After the first night's show, Clive Davis famously visited the band backstage, and incredulously asked Jerry “why didn't you play Touch Of Grey?!?”after the massive summer 1987 success of the song, with the Dead's triumphant return to MSG after four years away. Jerry's answer was “oh, man, we forgot!” In classic Dead form, they opened the second night with the missing Touch Of Grey.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
